CelebritiesKaty Perry, Obama, Wizkid Rule Twitter In 2014 by bruno419(op): 8:27pm On Dec 11, 2014
Popular singer, song-writer and actress, Katy Perry, has emerged the most followed person for 2014. It was the year that Twitter’s most-followed star Katy Perry https://twitter.com/katyperry hit the 61 million follower mark. She is closely followed in second place by Justin Bieber on 57 million, and Barack Obama, who, with 50 million followers, is the third most-followed person in the world, and the most-followed political or world leader on the platform.

Beside these three, others who made to the top 10 list included Taylor Swift – 48m, YouTube – 46m , Lady Gaga – 43m, Britney Spears- 39m, Justin Timberlake – 38m, Rihanna – 38m, and Instagram – 36m
Wizkid holds firm

Here in Nigeria, popular and award winning musician, Ayo Balogun, popularly known as Whiz Kid holds the top position. Wizkid was the first Nigerian artiste to reach one million followers on Twitter. He is followed by Davido, D’Banj and Don Jazzy, all in the entertainment sector.
Exciting Twitter year

2014 was a very exciting year on Twitter. It was the year in which England crashed out of the World Cup, the Queen sent her first ever Tweet, Scotland debated independence, and @Philae2014 Tweeted live from space as it landed on the Rosetta Comet.
People send more than 500 million Tweets per day. Each one contributes something special to Twitter, but only one is recognized as the “Golden Tweet,” a.k.a. the most-Retweeted Tweet of the year. This year, the honor goes to @TheEllenShow’s starry photo from the March Oscars telecast.

Victor Moses pips Mikel
Sport also took a dominant spot in 2014. For instance in the Nigerian setting, Soccer star, Victor Moses, has the highest Twitter followers in the sports category. Worldwide, a record 672 million Tweets were sent about this year’s World Cup finals in Brazil. In a World Cup year it is perhaps no surprise that the UK’s top ten most-Tweeted-about moments were sport-related. The 7-1 sweep of mighty Brazil by Germany, not only set a soccer record, it was also a record on Twitter, as the match generated the highest number of Tweets in soccer history.

PoliticsOnly By A United Action Can We Defeat Terrorism;jonathan by bruno419(op): 12:19pm On Dec 11, 2014
President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday
reiterated his call on Nigerians to unite against
insurgency, saying that bickering among selves
only served as morale booster to terrorists/
insurgents. Jonathan made the call while accepting his
nomination as the PDP candidate for the
presidential election in 2015 at the party’s National
Convention in Abuja. He stressed that bickering among Nigerians sends a
wrong signal to insurgents that the country was
divided in the war against terror and could also
demoralise the armed forces. “For this reason, we must remain united. I believe
that together as a people and with God on our side,
we can defeat terrorism and emerge even stronger
and more united as a country.
“Experience in many countries shows that there
may be the tendency for the escalation of violence in an election year like this. “We must all be vigilant, every one of us. Only by a
united action can we defeat terrorism and
unnecessary violence”, he said. The President stated that the security of lives and
property of Nigerians remained a priority of the
Federal Government, assuring that election would
hold in all states of the federation. While saluting the armed forces and security
services for their loyalty and commitment to the
nation, Jonathan said he would continue to ensure
they had the best in equipment and training. Jonathan reminded his fellow party members that
the opposition would employ every means
including intimidation and false accusation in their
desperation for power. He urged them not to descend to that level but to
remain focussed on the mission at hand to secure
the country’s future. “Let me emphasise again that nobody’s political
ambition is worth the blood of any Nigerian. “We must eschew violence even in the face of the
most outrageous act of desperation. “We must make sure our supporters have their
voter card or get them motivated and eager to
make their mark for our children, for a stronger
economy and for the security of the country’s
future.” The President noted that in the course of the
campaign ahead of the 2015 general elections,
some office seekers would say it was time for
change. “But while they are changing from one name to
another and from one party to another, we have
already brought change to this country. “Has change not come to our railway system? Has
change not come to our airports? Has change not
come to our road networks? “Has change not come to our agricultural sector?
Has change not come to our electoral process? Has
change not come to ‘almajiri’ education? “Is change not coming to the power sector? What
we need today is to consolidate on our gains in
order to secure our future.” While acknowledging the economic challenges
facing the country due to sliding oil prices,
Jonathan reaffirmed the determination of his
administration to address them. He said the country faced similar challenges back in
2008 and 2009 arising from unstable oil prices, but
it confronted and overcame them. The President assured Nigerians that his
administration had a capable economic team which
had already mapped out strategies to manage the
current oil price volatility and its threat to the
nation. Jonathan, who highlighted his various economic
policies and programmes and their benefits to
Nigerians, said his administration was working to
revitalise the insurance industry. According to him, the country’s insurance sector
had not achieved its full potential when compared
to other emerging economies. “Today, only three million of our citizens are
insurance policy holders, and overall insurance
penetration is less than 0.5 per cent of our GDP. “We want to transform this sector just as we have
done for our banking sector and our pension
system. “Our goal is to grow the total insurance premium in
our country from the present N300 billion to
N1trillion in the next few years.

PoliticsDemocracy Is Not About Quarreling Like Motor Park Touts – Jonathan - See More At by bruno419(op): 8:53pm On Dec 09, 2014
Abuja – President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday called on politicians to shun “ceaseless quarreling” and engage in robust political debates that would strengthen the country’s democracy.

Jonathan made the call at the public presentation and official launch of the Kukah Centre, founded by prominent cleric and Catholic Bishop‎ of Sokoto Diocese, Rev. Fr. Matthew Kukah.

‎‎Among other aims, the centre was established to strengthen national debate, improve governance and encourage Nigerians to take an active role in the country’s leadership.

Jonathan ‎said that the nation’s democracy should be deepened by robust debates, stimulation of innovative ideas and healthy engagements by all actors.

“I call on everyone, the political class, our citizens and more importantly, the academic community to rise up to these challenges posed by this initiative (centre).

“I think we are over defining our democracy today by quarreling as if democracy is about competitors quarreling just like motor park workers,” he said.

The president urged politicians to use the 2015 elections to renew their commitment ‎to the country’s unity.

He said: “As elections draw close, I call on all politicians to see this as another opportunity for us to renew our commitment to deepen our democracy and strengthen our bond of unity.

“Democracy is not about ‎political parties and politicians alone, it is not just about winning or losing elections; it is about freedom, about development and above all a forward march of our civilisation and encouragement of creativity.

“It is in this regard that we must seek to identify and support the growth of structures and institutions that will help strengthen our democracy to‎ meet our aspirations as a people.”

Jonathan noted that policy research institutes like the Kukah Centre had been pivotal to the social economic transformation of leading countries of the world‎.

According to him, such centres have served as the laboratories of the development, inter-relation and the refinement of key government policies.

He likened the Kukah Center to the Brooklyn Institute in America, which pioneered fact-based studies of government policies, using science as a key to analysis.

The president then challenged Nigerian politicians to draw inspiration from it.‎

“I’m personally convinced that the centre could not have finer mentor than the revered gentleman of long patriotic standing, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah,” he added.

The centre also aims at promoting conversations among Nigeria’s faith communities, as well as between leaders in faith and public policy.‎ (NAN)
