Politics / MUST READ: Differences Between Federalism And Unitary System by Bscholarly: 5:53pm On Mar 24, 2020
In this article, i will be discussing the major differences between unitary system of government and federalism. If you have been searching the internet for an article that clearly explains this, you are in the right place. Trust me; you will not regret reading this one.

1. There is powers sharing in federalism whereas political powers are concentrated in a unitary system of government

In a Unitary system of government, political powers are concentrated in the hands of a single central government or authority. The government at the center take total control of every part of the country. Whereas, in a federal system of government, political powers are not concentrated in the hands of a single government. It is shared between the central government and its component unit. In this case, the smaller government is usually autonomous and has lesser power than the central government.

This is the major difference between a unitary system of government and a federal system of government because is goes to the root and core features of the two systems of government.

2. Federalism operates a rigid constitution whereas Unitary system operates a flexible constitution

Another difference between federalism and Unitary system of government is that, a federal system usually go with a rigid constitution. This means that the process of amending the constitution is very difficult and no body will be able to alter the constitution without following due procedure. Whereas, in a unitary system of government, the constitution is usually flexible and unwritten. Since powers are concentrated on a single central government, the government can, at any time, temper with the provisions of the constitution.

Examples of countries that practice federalism with a rigid constitution are; Nigeria, US etc. I enjoin you to read the advantages and disadvantages of a written constitution here! That will help you to understand more about a rigid and written constitution.

3. There is usually constitutional conflict in a federal system as opposed to a unitary system

No doubt, it is rightly suggested that another important difference between a Federal system and a unitary system is that, there is always constitutional conflict in a federalism whereas, there is no such thing in a unitary system. Since the component units in a federation are also autonomous, it means that they can also make laws on matters that concerns them. Now, there is every likelihood that, in making such laws, it will contradict with laws already made by the central government.

This is not the case in a unitary system of government because there is only the central government in the country. Laws made by the central government cannot be opposed opposed by any other law or authority in the country.

4. There is Supremacy of law in federalism whereas, there is Supremacy of the parliament in a Unitary system

In a federal system of government there is usually Supremacy of the law as opposed to a unitary system of government. This is why most countries practising federalism have a rigid and written law. On the other hand, in a unitary system of government, there is the Supremacy of the parliament. The parliament are the law making organ of government.

5. Federalism is suitable for a heterogeneous nation whereas Unitary system is suitable for a homogeneous state

One of the apparent differences between federalism and a unitary system of government is that, federalism is more suitable and comfortably practiced in a heterogeneous nation.

This means that Federalism can only work in a state with multi ethnic groups and religions. This is unlike a Unitary system of government because a Unitary system is suitable for a homogeneous state. That is, a state without so much religious, ethnic or tribal difference between the people.

Politics / Nigerian Constitutional Development From 1914 Till Date by Bscholarly: 1:53am On Mar 13, 2020
Historical development of Nigerian Constitution: Apparently, the geographical entity called Nigeria is a British imperial creation. Originally, there was no territory called Nigeria, but by treaties, conquest and sufferance, the British acquired control over the different territories which make up Nigeria today. These territories can be divided into 3 main groups namely:

Lagos and the neighboring Yoruba land I.e the Bight of Benin.

The Lower Niger Basin and Surrounding territories known as Bright of Biafra or the Oil Rivers.

The Northern kingdom or Emirate and the neighboring middle belt territories.

In this article, i will trace the development of the constitution of Nigeria from 1914 (the first constitution of Nigeria by Lord Lugard) till 1963 (republican constitution). As a citizen of Nigeria, anything that has to do with the constitution of Nigeria should be your concern because the constitution is the supreme law of the land. Thus, it is very important to know how the constitution of this country has developed from 1914 till the current 1999 constitution. I enjoin you to read this article till the end. Trust me; you will learn a lot from this content.

To understand the meaning of examination malpractice, it is important to take each word one after the other. Crime / See The Six (6) Duties Of The Nigerian Police by Bscholarly: 1:57pm On Feb 27, 2020
As a citizen of Nigeria, it is important to know the powers, functions and duties of the Nigerian Police Force. The reason is because, the police is an executive organ of the government. This simply means that they are more closer to the citizens than any other organ of government. Now, since the executive is more closer to the citizens, there is every likelihood that, in performing their legal duties, they will breach the rights of citizens. Coupled with this, it is apparent that the executive is the strongest organ of government in Nigeria.
Education / See The Benefits Of The Concept Of Separation Of Powers In Nigeria by Bscholarly: 4:16pm On Feb 23, 2020
Separation of powers is a very important political concept. It is important because it goes a long way to determine the relationship between the government and the masses in a state. Coupled with that, separation of power is apparently known as a tool used to ensure justice in the state and accountability in the activities of the government.

Nonetheless, it should be noted that Separation of powers is not the only thing that brings justice, equality and fairness in a country. Sometimes, the nature of the kind of people in a state also contribute. This is why countries that don't actually practice Separation of Powers do very well even till today. So, the argument that Separation ensure justice and avoids abuse of power is not totally true. For me, it is partially correct but not absolute.

In this article, i will be discussing some of the importance of Separation of Powers in a state. You will agree with me that the concept of Separation of Powers has some features that makes it very important. Those importance features will be explicitly explained as we continue. But before going into that, lets quickly see what separation is all about.

Politics / See Why Federalism Was Adopted In Nigeria: 6 Reasons by Bscholarly: 9:30am On Feb 23, 2020
Have you ever wondered why Nigeria is practicing a federal system of government and not any other system? Do you know the reasons for federalism in Nigeria? In this article, i will explicitly enumerate and discuss the reasons for federalism in Nigeria.

First, it is pertinent to note that Nigeria did not choose federalism because it is the best or most practiced system of government in the world. I mean, there are other political systems the country could have adopted rather than federalism. Apparently, there are actually cogent reasons why the government of Nigeria chose federalism and those reasons are what I will be explaining to you in this article.

Coupled with that, we will be looking briefly at the meaning and history of federalism in Nigeria. These subtopics will also help you to quickly ascertain some of the reasons why Nigeria is currently practicing federalism when I start to list and explain them. So, without wasting much time, what is a federal system of government?

What is federalism?

In short, federalism can be defined as a system of government in which political powers of the state are shared between the central government and other component units. In light of this, a constitution is said to be federal when its operates two levels of government, that is the federal and state, and each of this level exercise its different powers without interference by the other level.

On the other hand; a constitution is unitary when there are created by the law made by the central legislature and their existence depends upon the government to control, supervision of the central government.

From the above explanation, one can rightly say that the constitution of Nigeria and United States of America are federal constitutions while the constitution of France and the Republic of Ireland are Unitary constitutions.

Federalism therefore involves the linkage of individuals, groups and policies in lasting but limited union in such a way as to provide for the energetic pursuit of common goals while maintaining the respective integrities of all parties.

Politics / See The Characteristics Of A Good Constitution by Bscholarly: 6:03pm On Feb 22, 2020
One of the essentials of a democratic government is a good and well drafted constitution. There is no doubt that the constitution of a country is capable of increasing or decreasing the possibility of criminal activities in that country. This is exactly why it is necessary to have a constitution that really protect the citizens it was made for. Not only is it necessary for the constitution to protect the rights of its citizens. A good constitution must also regulate the activities of government officials and avoid dictatorship.
Education / Reasons For The Success Of Indirect Rule In Northern Nigeria by Bscholarly: 9:22pm On Feb 17, 2020
If you have been searching the internet to know why indirect rule was successful in the Northern Nigeria, i enjoin you to read this article till the end. Meanwhile, before I will go into the crux of this work, it is apt to know indirect rule is. Below is the definition of indirect rule.

What is indirect rule?

Indirect rule is a system of government introduced by the colonial Masters in most African and Asian countries, where the pre-existing rulers of the people were used to control the masses. According to Wikipedia, it is a system used by the British and French to control parts of their colonial empires, particularly in Africa and Asia, through their existing indigenous power structures.

The colonial masters chose indirect rule basically because of the diversity in culture and beliefs of the people in Africa. Coupled with that, indirect rule seemed to be the cheapest way through which the colonial master could accomplish their purpose in Africa and Asia. Below are some of the reasons why indirect succeeded in Northern Nigeria.

Why indirect rule succeeded in northern Nigeria

Below are some of the reasons why indirect rule succeeded in the North:

1. Centralized nature of the North

2. Lack of educated elites to oppose the system

3. Pre-existing tax system in the North

4. Preservation of the culture and religion of the people

5. Pre-existing judicial system in the north

Yeah! There you have some of the reasons why indirect rule totally succeeded in Northern Nigeria. Meanwhile, if you need a detailed explanation of any of the reasons I have already mentioned above, keep reading this article as I will explain everything in depth.
