Politics is often described as a game of high stakes, and new revelations suggest how the founders of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) and Peter Obi outmaneuvered President Tinubu and the APC. The move reportedly neutralized a plan to establish a one-party system without visible opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The strategy centered on the registration of the NDC, which was finalized by a court order. As the window for INEC to appeal that judgment had lapsed long before Peter Obi joined the party, the registration remains legally airtight.

The Nigerian political landscape was recently set abuzz following the announcement by His Excellency, Mr. Peter Obi, regarding his resignation from his former party and subsequent defection to the NDC.

Behind the scenes, the NDC was registered by Senator Seriake Dickson in February 2026. This followed a closed-door meeting between Obi, Senator Dickson, and former Presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Olusegun Obasanjo. Senator Dickson, the former Governor of Bayelsa State, shares a close political bond with former President Jonathan.

While rumors initially circulated that Jonathan himself might contest the presidency under the NDC during Obi’s visits to Otuoke, it appears this may have served as a tactical distraction to the current APC lead governemnet, and their controlled INEC.

While the Tinubu administration and INEC focused on destabilizing the Labour Party and monitoring new party applications linked to Obi’s associates, the NDC remained under the radar.

As the reports further indicate, the plan, orchestrated under the guidance of Obasanjo and Jonathan, was recently presented to Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi. Both are reportedly considering resigning from the ADC to join the NDC. However, they face a potential hurdle: the NDC has reportedly zoned its presidential ticket to the Southern part of Nigeria.

As revealed, Nigeria's former president and Senator Dickson were preparing the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for Peter Obi. Do you remember when Senator Dickson visited Rabiu Kwankwaso in Kano State? Now, you can connect the dots.

That is why Peter Obi repeatedly assured Nigerians that he would be on the ballot, no matter what happened. He knew that APC-aligned agents within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) leadership would never allow him to secure their presidential ticket; he knew from the onset, even long before joining the ADC Party, just to distract them from NDC registration success.

He moved to ADC just as the ADC leadership thought they had cornered him by deciding to make Atiku Abubakar their consensus candidate, Peter Obi and his team activated the main "Plan A," by moving out and officially joining NDC.

When President Tinubu caught wind of the rumors that Peter Obi might decamp to the NDC, the administration directed their representatives in the National Assembly to pass a law prohibiting last-minute defections. Unfortunately for them, Peter Obi and his supporters joined the NDC before they could achieve their goal.

President Tinubu was so caught off guard by Obi's sudden defection that he had to cancel his proposed trips to Rwanda and Kenya. He now needs to find a way to destabilize the NDC in a very short period. However, that effort will likely fail, as Peter Obi is already set to challenge him on the 2027 ballot.

While INEC was occupied with frustrating the registration of parties suspected to be fronts for Peter Obi’s supporters, the alliance between Obi, Obasanjo, and Jonathan appears to have successfully outsmarted both the electoral umpire and the Presidency. Whether this strategic shift will redefine the 2027 polls remains to be seen.
