Politics / Emir Sanusi Dethronement: Security Operatives Storm Kano Emir’s Palace (photos) by CallMeDrino: 2:28pm On Mar 09, 2020
A team of security operatives on Monday stormed the palace of the Emir of Kano in Kano State.

This followed the removal of the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, from office by the state government.

The team of security personnel at the traditional ruler’s palace included men of the Nigeria Police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

Sanusi’s removal was announced by the Secretary to the State Government, Usman Alhaji, during the State Executive Council meeting held at the Government House in Kano.

According to Alhaji, the decision to remove the traditional ruler was as a result of his alleged consistent refusal to abide by instructions given to him by the state government.

Elsewhere, there have been reports of a rowdy session in the Kano State House of Assembly shortly after the announcement of the emir’s removal.

In a video trending on social media, Monday’s plenary was when a group of lawmakers in the chamber clustered together in what appeared to be a fight over the mace in the legislative chamber of the House.

The mace was later taken away from the chamber by a man believed to be the clerk of the House.

Sanusi’s removal comes one week after the Kano State Public Complaint and Anti-Corruption Commission had summoned the Emir.

He was asked to respond to a petition accusing him of selling lands belonging to the Kano Emirate to the tune of N2 billion.

The traditional ruler had, however, secured a restriction order from a court to stop the commission from investigating him.

The occasion of the 2020 Commonwealth Day has been marred in Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Education, as a result of Power outage at the Ministry.

The Commonwealth Day event scheduled to hold on Monday the 9th of March at 11am ,was greeted with poor planning as key officials of the Diplomatic community with Heads of agencies of the Federal Ministry of Education and students from over 10 schools were kept in the dark for hours.

GLOBAL TIMES observed that the challenge was due to the difficulty faced by the organizers on powering it back up generating set.

Diplomats and Permanent Secretaries of the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the celebrating Ministry left the hall of event.

Among the dignitaries present were British High Commissioner, Richard Moon and others .

Education / Lassa Fever Kills AAUA Student, Another Shot Dead By Cultists by CallMeDrino: 8:54am On Mar 09, 2020
Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, has lost two of its students – Patience Ayedun and Olakunle Olayinka.

Ayedun, a 200-level student of the Department of Educational Management, was said to have been infected with Lassa fever disease and was quickly rushed to the health centre of the institution for treatment.

In his own case, Olayinka, a 300-level student of the Department of Biochemistry of AAUA, was reportedly shot dead by suspected cultists in the town on Friday, The PUNCH reports.

The university management described the two incidents as sad and unfortunate in a statement issued by the Acting Registrar of the institution, Mr Opeoluwa Akinfemiwa, on Sunday.

The statement read in part, “On admission of Miss Temitope Patience Ayedun, a 200-level student of the Department of Educational Management, at the university health centre, the medical personnel tried their best to manage her until she was referred to the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, where she was intensively managed before she died on Thursday, March 5, 2020.

” The news of the death of Mr. Olakunle Matthew Olayinka, a 300-level student of the Department of Biochemistry, following wounds from gunshot by unidentified gunmen, was received last night, Friday, March 6, 2020, after the medical personnel at the university health centre put up spirited efforts to stabilise him. The security agents are still on the trail of the assailants for apprehension.”

To this end, the statement said the university senate had directed that the first semester university-wide “GST and ENT CBT examinations for 2019/2020 academic session earlier scheduled for Monday, March 9, 2020 to Thursday, March 12, 2020 be postponed till further notice.”

The school urged the students of the institution not to panic as the management, in conjunction with the security agencies, are on top of the situation.

Celebrities / 16-Yr-Old British-Nigerian Student Steals Kiss From Meghan Markle (Video, Pics) by CallMeDrino: 6:50am On Mar 09, 2020
A 16 year old British-Nigerian schoolboy on Friday stole the show when Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, paid a visit to Robert Clack Upper School in Essex, Dagenham, East London.

The cheeky boy identified as Aker Okoye, bounded on to the stage and went straight in for a kiss on the cheek of Meghan who made a secret trip to Robert Clack Upper School in Dagenham.

GLOBAL TIMES learnt that Meghan’s visit was in support of International Women’s Day. It was her final solo engagement as a working member of the Royal Family.

Okoye, who happens to be the Head boy came upstage after the Duchess called for a ‘brave young man’ to join her to explain the importance of the International Women’s Day.

The boy act results in to a rapturous applause from his colleagues while Meghan laughed and wagged her finger in mock admonishment.

With excellent comic timing, Okoye waited for the cheers to cool off then leaned in to the microphone to say: “She really is beautiful, innit.”

“I had to speak the truth there,” he told the room. “International Women’s Day is a reminder to everyone that women can do it all and do do it all.

“This is more of a message to all you guys. Maybe this Sunday could be the one day we don’t look at women as objects.”

“Well done. Very well said,” replied Meghan as Aker hugged her and left the stage.

“And incredible confidence, won’t you all agree?” she asked the other students.

Pupils arriving at school on Friday had been told to expect a VIP, and between them they speculated that perhaps Boris Johnson, Beyoncé or even Jackie Chan might be paying them a visit.

Undeterred by the raging coronavirus, Meghan opted to shake hands with teachers.

Health / Coronavirus: Nigerian Man Tests Positive For Deadly Virus In US by CallMeDrino: 9:27am On Mar 08, 2020
A Nigerian man has tested positive for deadly Wuhan coronavirus in the United States of America.

This was announced on Saturday night by the Mayor of District of Columbia (DC), Muriel Bowser, in a news conference.

GLOBAL TIMES learnt that the man whose name is yet to be ascertained, lives in Nigeria and is in his 50s, but had been staying with his family members in Washington recently.

According to Bowser, he tested positive in Maryland, where he remains hospitalised.

Officials said; “DC Health has been notified by the State of Maryland of an individual who stayed in DC before presenting himself to a Maryland hospital and then tested positive for COVID-19 by the State of Maryland. DC Health is conducting contact tracing of the patient and individuals of known contact. CDC will classify this as a DC case because he stayed in DC for one night when he arrived in this country.”

The Nigerian is the second confirmed case in the US capital after another man also in his 50s tested positive for coronavirus.

Bowser said the initial case started exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 in late February. He was admitted to a Washington hospital on Thursday and appeared to have no history of international travel and no close contacts to any other confirmed cases across the US.

The mayor and public health officials sought to reassure the public and said DC has adequate tests to evaluate patients.

Bowser did not declare a state of emergency.

The DC Department of Health in a statement said; “While this is first case in the District, there is still no widespread community transmission and the general level of risk for residents is low.”

GLOBAL TIMES recalls that the novel coronavirus renamed by World Health Organisation (WHO) as Covid-19, broke out last December in Wuhan, China.

Over Seventy-three countries including Nigeria have now recorded cases of the deadly virus.

With more than 225 cases confirmed across U.S., the death toll in the country from the coronavirus outbreak rose to 14 on Friday.

It was reported that more than 100,000 people have been infected worldwide.

COVID-19: Moment US Health Official Was Caught Not Following Her Preventative Measures (Video)

A United States health official has gone viral on all social media platforms at large after she was caught in a video not following her own coronavirus prevention advice.

In the viral video, the female whose name was identified as Sara Cody, was seen giving a public advice on how the spread of the deadly Wuhan disease can be contained.

In the 19 seconds video, Dr. Sara was heard saying “Today, start working on not touching your face because one main way viruses spread is when you touch your own mouth, nose or eyes.”

Then almost immediately after giving the advice, Sarah, the director of Santa Clara County Public Health Department in California, who tried to continue with her speech was captured as she licks her finger tip to turn a page.

This has generated several reactions from users online especially on popular micro-blogging platform, Twitter.

Let her accept full responsibility for her actions, just as you did.
