Phones / Apple VS US Government Brouhaha by cammyjr(m): 11:44pm On Feb 21, 2016
Should the government be allowed to open a "back door," to smartphones in the name of national security?

The government wants Apple to unlock a phone used by a terrorist in the San Bernardino massacre and is going to extraordinary measures to get the company to respond accordingly.

On March 22nd, the government and Apple are due to appear in a Riverside court for a hearing on the issue. Riverside is about an hour east of Los Angeles.

The FBI is believed to have a court order demanding Apple create software for a “back door,” that would allow the government to get into the encrypted iPhone. The phone is locked with a passcode, and programmed to erase data after too many unsuccessful tries. The FBI wasn’t willing to risk that happening, so it turned to Apple for a fix.

Greetings great people, please I have a question and wish to get a good advise on this. I read Materials and Metallurgical Engineering in my undergraduate degree and after school I learnt to code through online platforms but without any certification to show for it and I am about to apply for a computer software and database development program (Ontario Graduate Certificate Program) in Lambton College. Is it possible to have a successful visa approval even with the fact that there is no relation between the two courses ?

Thanks in anticipation.
Car Talk / Human Drivers Are Bumping Into Driverless Cars And Exposing A Key Flaw by cammyjr(m): 9:52pm On Dec 19, 2015
The self-driving car, that cutting-edge creation that’s supposed to lead to a world without accidents, is achieving the exact opposite right now: The vehicles have racked up a crash rate double that of those with human drivers.

The glitch?

They obey the law all the time, as in, without exception. This may sound like the right way to program a robot to drive a car, but good luck trying to merge onto a chaotic, jam-packed highway with traffic flying along well above the speed limit. It tends not to work out well.
As the accidents have piled up , the arguments among programmers at places like Google Inc. and Carnegie Mellon University are heating up: Should they teach the cars how to commit infractions from time to time to stay out of trouble?

Phones / The Breitling Exospace B55 by cammyjr(m): 12:08am On Dec 19, 2015

Out of the blue Breitling unveiled a smartwatch – the Breitling Exospace B55.

This isn’t an Android Wear watch, you get a classic analog display with two line displays on the dial. Everything about this watch was made in Switzerland – from the movement to the smartphone app.
The movement is a SuperQuartz (a thermos-compensated quartz) and is rated at 2 months of battery life. Breitling says it's 10 times more accurate than a standard quartz watch.

The black titanium case has a diameter of 46mm, it's 15.25mm thick and has 24/20mm straps (TwinPro). The watch face is protected by sapphire crystal with glareproofed coating on both sides. The watch is water resistant up to 100m (330ft), though this being an aviator watch it's best not to have an occasion to test that.

The watch features a number of block and flight time functions, allowing you to record the time it takes you to take off, time and date of arrival and so on.
When connected to a smartphone, the line displays can show emails, messages (SMS or WhatsApp), phone calls and reminders of upcoming appointments.

The price? It is valued at $8,900

Business / A $5,900 Chair For The Office by cammyjr(m): 9:38pm On Dec 16, 2015
A company in San Francisco has created a robotic chair designed to help you stay focused while working.

The Altwork Station is designed to transform itself into different positions to help keep you alert and comfortable.
It can go from being a standing desk - all the rage in offices right now - right down to a setting that has the user almost horizontal.
Magnets are used to keep the keyboard and mouse in place, and hopefully the bracket is strong enough to stop a Mac computer tumbling down into your face. There's also a side table for a cup of coffee, if you need one.

The desk is currently priced at $5,900 (£3,900).

Che Voigt, Altwork's co-founder says the price is in-line with most high-end office furniture, the company is focusing on the US market but eventually hope the desk will be used in offices all over the world.

Webmasters / Dating Website Ashley Madison Hack Victims Receive Blackmail Letters by cammyjr(m): 10:58pm On Dec 15, 2015
Ashley Madison dating site members have purportedly received letters from Blackmailers threatening to reveal their membership to friends and family unless they pay money.

The dating site for married people was hacked in the summer.

Security expert Graham Cluley blogged he had received "a steady stream of emails" from the site's users worried about the hack.
Mr Cluley advised anyone receiving such a letter to "ignore it".

Ashley Madison - which has the tagline 'Life is short, have an affair' - was hacked in July, and data belonging to its 33 million members was leaked on to the so-called dark web, meaning it was accessible via encrypted browsers.
A month later, police in Canada reported that two individuals associated with the leak of data had taken their own lives.
It has left many members concerned about how their data could be misused.

TV/Movies / Revealed ! How Dolphins See People Via Echolocation by cammyjr(m): 6:58pm On Dec 11, 2015
Researchers at SpeakDolphin.com are claiming to have bridged that gap between humans and dolphins for the very first time. Dolphin biosonar works by releasing a series of high-frequency “clicks” from an organ in their skulls known as a melon. As the click passes through the water, it encounters objects. These objects generate a return signal that the dolphin receives and interprets. If you’ve ever stood near a building or large surface and heard the way it affected your voice, or heard an actual echo chamber in action, you’ve experienced a crude example of what dolphins can perform biologically at much higher resolution.

The research team created the image below in two steps. First, it used high-test audio equipment to capture the sonic vibrations produced by Amaya (the dolphin) as she swept her biosonar across various objects. Because any object in the water attenuates the original signal, measuring how these signals differ can give us the idea of a shape of an object. The technique seems similar to looking at a shadow cast on a wall to get a sense of the person casting it.
The team tested a variety of objects, including a flower pot and cube, before finally testing a human. The diver, Jim McDonough, swam without breathing gear to make certain that air bubbles didn’t impact the final image. McDonough submerged himself in front of the dolphin, Amaya, who scanned him with her biosonar. The research team then relayed their audio measurements to the CymaScope lab in the UK. A CymaScope is a device capable of projecting sonic vibrations into pure water and measuring the result.

Car Talk / Driverless Car Produced By Baidu Completes Test Run On Beijing Roads by cammyjr(m): 8:18pm On Dec 10, 2015
The 30km (18.6 miles) test route required a modified BMW 3 Series to navigate "complex road conditions", including human drivers, the firm said.
The car executed a range of manoeuvres, including U-turns, lane changes and merging into traffic from ramps.

Baidu has amassed a library of 3D road maps to guide its autonomous vehicles.

"Fully autonomous driving under mixed road conditions is universally challenging, with complexity further heightened by Beijing's road conditions and unpredictable driver behaviour," said Wang Jing, senior vice-president of Baidu and general manager of the company's Autonomous Driving Business Unit.

Baidu's highly automated driving (HAD) maps capture road data in 3D to within a few centimetres of accuracy, according to the company.
The car is able to detect vehicles, road lanes and objects in its path.

Car Talk / First Brain-powered Car In The World Being Developed by cammyjr(m): 1:16pm On Dec 09, 2015
Automotive giants like Toyota, Nissan and Tesla have said self-driving cars are around the corner, but that may not be the only futuristic automotive tech to come our way.

A team at China's Nankai University have developed a prototype of a car controlled by a driver's brain signals, Reuters reports. The team is working on technology that uses brain signals to command a car to stop, move forward, backwards, lock and unlock, according to the publication.

Phones / New Apple Iphone Battery Case Gives You 25 Hours Of Talk Time by cammyjr(m): 10:51pm On Dec 08, 2015
Unveiled Tuesday, the iPhone 6S Smart Battery Case is the company's answer to the enduring problem of smartphones that run out of juice far too soon for frustrated smartphone users.

It also adds some heft to product known for its sleek design, along with the extra energy . As the case wraps around the back of the iPhone, its battery unit protrudes far enough that it may spoil the clean line of your jeans as you slip it into your pocket.

The case costs $99 in the US, £79 in the UK and AU$165 in Australia. Apple said the battery boost is enough to increase talk time to 25 hours, video playback to 20 hours and Internet use on modern high-speed 4G LTE networks to 18 hours.

Foreign Affairs / Donald Trump Wants To 'close Up The Internet' To Stop ISIS by cammyjr(m): 6:08pm On Dec 08, 2015
Donald Trump has discovered the secret to world peace -- 'closing up the internet'.

"We've got to do something with the internet," Trump said. "They are recruiting by their thousands.""We're losing a lot of people because of the internet. And we have to do something. We have to go see Bill Gates and a lot of different people that really understand what's happening. We have to talk to them and maybe, in certain areas, close that internet up in some ways."

At a South Carolina rally on Monday, the Republican presidential front-runner stressed the need to "do something with the internet" in order to combat terrorist groups such as Islamic State (Isis).

Business / When Your Boss Is An Uber Algorithm by cammyjr(m): 4:01pm On Dec 03, 2015
A paper presented last week by Data & Society, a nonprofit research institute in New York City, recounts ways that Uber’s system steers its drivers’ behavior and suggests that regulators may need to consider them.

Uber calls its drivers “independent contractors” and solicits new ones with the promise of being “your own boss.” Alex Rosenblat, a researcher at Data & Society and coauthor of the new paper, interviewed a handful of drivers, talked less formally with many others from the back of an Uber, and monitored nearly a year of discussions by drivers in online forums. She says the reality of being an Uber contractor is different. “Uber does control a lot of the ways that drivers behave on the job,” she says.

Drivers usually have to meet a human when they first sign up to drive for Uber or Lyft. After that they interact with an automated management system primarily delivered by a mobile app.

Iyin Aboyeji and Jeremy Johnson are the co-founders of Andela, the Lagos-based talent accelerator. Perhaps you’ve heard of it? Andela firm is democratizing access to coding skills by paying talent in Africa to learn to code.

An unusual model...but if $10 million in seed funding, global press mentions, and a new training outpost in Nairobi, Kenya are anything to go by, Andela is on to something.

This evening, TechCabal will host Jeremy and Iyin on Radar for an interactive "Ask Me Anything" session, and we're super excited!

Today's conversation begins at 5PM (GMT+1). and be sure to share with your friends. http://radar.techcabal.com
