EAC creates admission opportunities for Nigerian students at Harvard, Cambridge, others (Read Details) EDUCATIONAL Advancement Centre (EAC), a frontline Cambridge Advanced Level training and examination centre located in Ibadan, Oyo State, says it is intensifying efforts to equip more Nigerian students to study in Harvard University, Cambridge University, and other world class institutions abroad. Recommended: 10 Things To Avoid If You Are After A First Class Degree Speaking recently after the sendoff organised for the May/June 2018 set that had completed their Advanced Level programmes in the centre, the Dean of Schools of the centre, Mr Gbenga Adebambo, stated that the EAC had learning methods effective enough to be at par with the world’s best, capable of developing the learners not only to get university admission, but also to give them firm education foundation on which to build their careers. According to Adebambo, not less than 80 per cent of the students at the centre who sat the 2017 A’ Level examination had Credit and above; and that the centre produced the overall best student in three subjects. “EAC has become a Cambridge award winner annually,” he enthused. Read Also: Fear as ‘fake’ UNIBEN sachet water massively sold in Sokoto University.(Read Details) One of the directors of the centre, Pastor Muyiwa Bamgbose, advised every parent whose children are still in the secondary school to encourage them to explore the Advanced Level education option, noting that the step would enhance their educational pursuits. “Any student with Cambridge Advanced Level certificate in Nigeria has the privilege to proceed for skill development education either in Nigeria or abroad from 200 Level, with a tendency to finish with first class. “Most of our students usually graduate with excellent results here or abroad. For instance, one of our students, Iyeyinka Omigbodun, gained admission into Harvard University on scholarship in view of her A’Level results obtained here. Another scholarship is awaiting her at the Cambridge University for postgraduate studies having done very well in her first degree education in Harvard. “EAC has produced several students in that capacity. Your child can make it too. We have what it takes in terms of teaching and research facilities, as well as human resources to produce self-sufficient students for university education. “Our international academic linkage with the Philippines medical programmes is ongoing. So far, we have produced three sets. Philippines is one of the countries in the world with the best medical education; and the cost of education and cost of living over there are relatively low. Philippine medical students in Nigeria will spend one year in EAC here in Nigeria before proceeding to Philippines to complete their programme. Read other posts on Campus Trends like; 1. www.campustrends.com.ng How did branded University of Benin (UNIBEN) sachet water described as fake get to the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS)? This is the question many UDUS students are seeking an answer to. How did branded “UNIBEN Table Water” find its way to the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS)? This is a puzzle members of UDUS community are praying the management to unravel. According to information on the packaging material, the water is produced and packaged at the University of Benin (UNIBEN) in Edo State. But, the UNIBEN management has denied authorising any distributor to sell its water products in Sokoto State. Also Read: Student Dressed Like Role Model to Exam Hall Chased Out (Read Details+Photos) https://www.campustrends.com.ng/2018/06/student-dressed-like-role-model-to-exam.html Rather than being sold in plastic bottles as its name implies, the water is sold in sachets. Apart from the long distance between the two states, UDUS workers and students are wondering if it is profitable for UNIBEN to transport its water products to Sokoto State, where there are many companies producing sachet water. The UNIBEN-branded sachet water has caused an uproar among students, fueling speculations that the sachet water may have been produced by an unregistered company operating in Sokoto State. Also Read: Student Dressed Like Role Model to Exam Hall Chased Out (Read Details+Photos) https://www.campustrends.com.ng/2018/06/student-dressed-like-role-model-to-exam.html Some shop owners could not explain the source of the sachet water. They said they only took regular delivery of bags of the sachet water from an unnamed distributor. Since none of the retailers could explain the source of the branded sachet water, students are expressing fear of possible outbreak of water-borne diseases as a result of drinking the sachet water. The Students’ Union Government (SUG) has also raised a health alarm, describing the sachet water as “too risky” for consumption. Findings revealed that the “UNIBEN Table Water” carries the name and address of the University of Benin and claimed the water is being produced in Edo State. But, students described this as fraudulent, since its distributor has remained unknown. It was gathered that the “UNIBEN Table Water” sells quickly more than any other sachet water on the campus. Some students said they preferred it to others produced in the state. Tijani Abdullah, a 200-Level Law student, said: “The distance from Edo to Sokoto is too far and this makes it impossible to have UNIBEN water product here. Except they have their factory here, it is not possible. Since, the UNIBEN management has denied it authorised any distributor to market its water in Sokoto, UDUS management and the SUG must stop the sale of the water on our campus, at least, for safety reasons.” Suliat Mohammed, a 200-Level English Education student, urged retailers to stop making profit at the expense of students’ wellbeing. She said: “I know there is something wrong with the water the first time I saw it. SUG should stop the distribution of the water on campus for the safety of students.” Hayatullah Bello, a 200-Level English Literature student, said the sale of “UNIBEN Table Water” on the campus was suspect because of “the long distance between Benin and Sokoto”. “Besides, it would be a shame for UDUS management to bring another university’s products to our campus. If the product is water that our school can also produce, then it means our own management is not serious,” Hayatullah said. Tijani Ibrahim, a 200-Level English Literature student, said: “The reason we suspected the water is because of the distance. It is necessary to stop the fakers before they sacrifice students’ health for their own profits.” Reacting to the development, UNIBEN has denied selling its water products beyond Edo State, cautioning members of the public to beware of fake companies using the school’s name to perpetrate illegality. Its spokesperson, Mr M.O. Osasuyi, told TheNation on telephone: “UNIBEN Table Water was established and is being controlled by the school management. Our water company does not have any branch outside Edo State. If there’s an agent interested in selling our water products outside the state, we are sure the person would have discussed with the school authoritie. But, for now I am not aware of anyone.” UNIBEN’s Dean of Students’ Affairs (DSA) Prof Osadolor also denied that the school has distributors of its water product in Sokoto State, describing the sachet water as “counterfeit”. He wondered if it was profitable for UNIBEN to transport its water products to a distant state that has variety of water companies, stressing that the school did not have any branch elsewhere, apart from Edo State. He said: “We do not authorise anybody at all to sell our water products in Sokoto State and we do not have a branch elsewhere.” Further investigation revealed that the sachet is supplied from Lagos. When phone number of the sachet manufacturer was called, Xaris Ltd, written on the sachet, a man who simply identified himself as Akin admitted to have been the manufacturer of the nylon. He said: “I am not the one supplying the water; it is only the nylon I produce. I supply the nylon from Lagos. That is all I know.” Also Read: Student Dressed Like Role Model to Exam Hall Chased Out (Read Details+Photos) https://www.campustrends.com.ng/2018/06/student-dressed-like-role-model-to-exam.html Asked if he also produced packaging materials for the University of Benin, Akin said: “I used to supply nylon to UNIBEN. But for now, I am not supplying them anymore. I have produced for them before, but I’m not producing for them again.” One of the retailers of the “UNIBEN Table Water” at the hostel mini-market of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Al-Kasim stores. The salesman at the shop, who sought to remain anonymous, revealed that the ‘pure water’ is produced in Sokoto, while the UNIBEN nylon is produced and supplied by a man from Lagos.” Speaking further, Akin said: “To the best of my knowledge, the owner of Garka Pure Water ran out of nylon. So, he started to use that of UNIBEN. This is probably what happened.” Findings revealed that the said Garka Pure Water used to flourish in UDUS before it went into bankruptcy, after which the “UNIBEN Table Water” suddenly surfaced on the campus. However, all efforts to get the source of the controversial sachet water and its producer yielded no results as everyone contacted declined to speak. Sharing is caring, share this post with others. Redeeming The Time This was a guest post on www.campustrends.com.ng Redeem the time for the days are evil For the northern war is come to pass Right before our very own eyes Call the dust of old hither On which we shall play the moonlight games wherein there is no form of civilization On which as a child I saw myself with an ordinary vision about to birth an extraordinary future On which communalism reside The classless policy in our blood now defiled Redeem the time for the days are evil For the northern war is come to pass Right before our very own eyes Beckon on the east and western wind To take the rule again Yet, take the northern flag along For from the days of our fathers till now We called them foolish for their incredible ways But it turned out that their foolishness beats our wisdom Pointing out that to succeed we need to fuse up Redeem the time for the days are evil For the northern war is come to pass Right before our very own eyes INTERPRETATION The poet personally beckons on the nation as a whole to come together (fuse up) lending from the days when the white had not brought their ways, the unique relationship they had in the past. The northern war is an allusion from the Christian Bible. The poet metaphorically mentions the current issues the country have been facing VIA the Northern region. The poem is a call to fusion of all the regions of the state, genuinely relating with one another for a better future of the nation. -Baylow This is a poem written by Bello Oluwasegun. The Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi and other eminent Nigerians are to bag honourary awards at the 23rd convocation ceremonies of the Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti. Oba Ogunwusi is to be honored with the honourary Doctorate degree in Public Administration at the ceremonies slated for Saturday, June 23, 2018. The former Registrar of West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and that of University of Ife(now Obafemi Awolowo University, Chief Alex Ajayi, Mr. Abiodun Adedapo, Dr Olasehinde Olatunji, Mr Israel Ovirih and Dr Falil Ayo Abina, are to be honoured with Doctor of Public Administration, Doctor of Finance , Doctor of Public Administration and Doctor of Economics, respectively. The University’s Vice Chancellor, who spoke at a pre-convocation press conference in Ado Ekiti on Tuesday, said the institution has set up work-study programme, where indigent students would work for the institution and get paid on monthly basis to finance their education to reduce drop out on account of poverty. The EKSU’s Vice Chancellor, Prof Samuel Oye Bandele, disclosed that a total of 9,796 will be graduated out of which 49 bagged first class honour degrees. Bandele said the university just secured full accreditation for 35 courses with three placed on interim status by National Universities Commission (NUC), saying this will boost academic performances in the institution when students realise that they have good prospects. He said the foregoing achievements were a follow up to the approval given by NUC foe the running of 11 new courses, these included: Insurance, Actuarial Science, Library and Information Science, Marketing, Cooperative and Rural Development and Tourism Studies. Others, according to the Vice Chancellor were: Educational Technology, Entrepreneurship, Industrial Relations and Personnel Management, Anatomy and Philosophy. “The reason for these new courses is that, we are in the world of competition. Our people need a break away from traditional courses to make them competitive in this 21st century economy”, he said. The VC added that the university is making good exploits in academics, with many of its academic staff and students leading in national and global academic competitions. He said one of the students of the university, Tosin Oribamise, is torepresent Nigeria and Africa in Table Tennis Competition in Argentina in October. “We are really committed to contribute to our environment. The EKSU Water, EKSU blocks and books have taken over the market in Ekiti and our bakery will soon take off. “This is part of the ways to ensure that we shore up our IGR to be able to meet demands of academics, staff and other things that will promote this university and make them competitive in the labour market”, he said Source: www.campustrends.com.ng |

Have You Read "The Article That Got Adekunle Adebajo Rusticated By The University of Ibadan? After it first became public a few days ago, the news has been spreading really fast: the University of Ibadan has rusticated one of its students, ‘Kunle Adebajo, not for hooliganism or participation in a protest or involvement in a criminal activity, but for writing an article on the plastic refurbishment of halls of residence by the university management. Reno-painting, rather than renovation, was what the almost annual ritual was dubbed back in the early noughties — long before Adebajo set foot upon the university. Titled ‘UI: The irony of fashionable rooftops and awful interiors’, the piece is reproduced below — for the public to judge if it really warrants rustication by the UI management. Your comments are essentially needed. UI: The irony of fashionable rooftops and awful interiors By Fisayo Adekunle Adebajo “Our lives begin to end the day we keep silent about things that matter” ~ Martin Luther King Jr. Last year, they came. They came with a truckload of tiles and bags of cement, causing the residents of Mellanby Hall to start asking questions: What are all these tiles for? Has the school finally yielded to our pleas of renovating the decrepit vestiges of colonialism we oddly call ‘halls of residence’? Has the juggernaut of common sense finally bulldozed the hurdles of neglect to give way to a highway of prosperity? Mellanbites, indeed, thought a beacon of hope had come but nay, it was only a truckload of cosmetic products. Products purposed for the surgery of an organ which suffered no discomfort and which caused none. Their hopes were dashed when they learnt that the tiles were meant for the roof atop the cafeteria and nowhere else. Today, the cafeteria top is smiling at the sky while the teeth, joints and other vital organs ached for relief. Yesterday, they came again. Yes, we saw them. They brought an even greater truckload of tiles and cement in the glare of the morning sun. They took their time to download the cargo from the truck and they carefully placed them close to the entrance of the hall. But this time around, we were not to be fooled. The Hall Chairman and his associates already maintained a vantage point, observing the development and brooding over what step to take. What is it they want now? Are they going to tile the fences this time around when other pressing matters need expeditious action? Or have the halls been leased out as warehouses to a cement company? It should be mentioned that Kenneth Mellanby Hall was not alone as Sultan Bello Hall (and God knows where else) was, as observed, to get her share of the shipment later in the day. As a matter of fact, Lord Tedder Hall appears to be the setting for the feasibility study as the surgery had already been performed on it long ago. Besides as the hall of fame, should it not take after famous celebrities who set the pace in plastic surgeries and other corollaries of inferiority complex? Reports gotten from workers in the aforementioned two halls and the University Student Lodgings Bureau (USLB) indicate that those at the highest echelon of the university organogram are they who conceived, nurtured and begot the entire project. They did not consult – at least not those at the grassroots. They did not intimate or forewarn. They simply said ‘be’ and it was without feeling the pulse of the foot soldiers whose job it is to implement their commands. At the USLB and elsewhere, they are fondly called the “ogas at the top”. In a nutshell, the contract is nothing but the resultant child of oligarchic sodomy and elitist masturbation. The Kenyans do say that a rope has two ends. Seneca likewise once remarked, ‘He who comes to a conclusion when the other side is unheard may have been just in his conclusion, but yet has not been just in his conduct’. It is a matter of ethics, and anything to the contrary is tantamount to shooting oneself in the leg ab initio. Thus, what arguments has the school advanced so that the university community can accept this unsolicited dowry? It has been argued that the aim of the project is to forestall the further dilapidation of buildings through the prevention of the penetration of rainfall. This is perhaps in line with these words of Confucius, ‘A man who does not plan long ahead will find trouble right at his door’. Currently, it can be noticed that some old structures within the halls are already developing stretch marks and are undergoing unbridled ecdysis. Consequently, they say all they want is for these buildings not to crumble under our feet. This line of reasoning is what the workers at the site in Mellanby also articulated. They in fact sprinkled water on the imported tiles to demonstrate its water-repellent quality. No doubt, it is a really remarkable cause – except for a couple of reasons. Here’s the catch. First and foremost, the happenstance is another arguable case of putting the cart before the horse. At the present time, two toilet facilities in Sultan Bello hall are under lock due to their utter state of disrepair. Another one is in fact soon to join them in retirement. The same story goes for other halls as well. In point of fact, I know of persons who trek a long distance to answer nature’s call just so they could steer clear of the waterloo in our flooded but waterless conveniences. But then the vast majority have resigned to fate, daily taking sips of death into their posterior cavity and hoping their antibodies are up to the task. Asides the toilets, other aspects of the school’s basic amenities equally suffer untold and untellable abandonment. Innumerable sockets in the halls of residence have gone AWOL with several rooms having none that is functional. For some other rooms, it is the doors which have gone in search of the Chibok girls. And again in other places, the problem is with the light bulbs which confidently and constantly rebel against the positive commands of Maintenance. Different strokes for different folks. But of course, that is just a small portion of the large chunk of problems facing us. To go on listing would be to spend unnecessary time stating the obvious. Moreover, as men at the USLB rightly pointed out, the project is just a way of massaging the tumour and not assuaging the pain of the patient. This is because the tiles are likely not to last long due to endless swipes from the sun and heavy downpours from clouds. They would likely expand, crack and eventually succumb to the contingents of H2o. And so, the tiling of those surfaces may not be a permanent solution or a solution at all. The school should seek after long-lasting solutions especially through the building of new halls of residence which have been promised since 2012 (and possibly before that year), and not just give a broomstick to a drowning man. Our brothers from the Ashanti tribe now and again say, ‘If you are too smart to pay the doctor you had better be too smart to get ill’. In the same vein, if the school is too smart to build new hostels, then I guess it had better find a better way of preventing the collapse of the ones still available. Workers at the USLB have even been reported to say they are only waiting for the completion of the project and for someone to call them to work on faulty water tanks on the roofs. They sure would not want to risk their lives manoeuvring their way through the slippery tiles. According to reports some men of the Ondo State Police Command attached to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, on Monday, allegedly invaded a hostel of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State, and beat up some of the students met in the hostel. It was gathered that the incident happened at about 4 a.m when the students were ending a party they organised, with many of them suffering injuries of various degrees following the alleged brutalisation by the Police. One of the students, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Punch's correspondent that the policemen invaded the hostel in a commando-like manner without any respect for the privacy of the students. He said the policemen told them that they were searching for cult members in the hostel. “The incident happened around 4a.m after the students finished their hostel party. The operatives stormed the hostel as if they were going to war. They broke the doors, burglaries and ceilings to gain entrance. When they arrived, the students initially did not open the door for them, thinking they were armed robbers. That was how they started breaking the doors to enter. “When they entered, they started beating everybody. Many students were mercilessly beaten. But some students who gave them bribe were released while those who couldn’t bribe them were whisked away by the officers,” he said. When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, Mr. Femi Joseph, who confirmed the incident, said the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Gbenga Adeyanju, had ordered the investigation of the matter. Joseph stated, “Three students that were arrested had been released and the CP has ordered full investigation. After the investigation, if the policemen are found culpable, they will definitely pay for it, we don’t allow indiscipline in this command. I also want to use this medium to call on any student who was brutalised to come to my office with evidence and I promise we won’t spare any officer found culpable.” Also Read:7 Things That Can Get You Into Trouble With The Police (SARS) https://www.campustrends.com.ng/2017/12/7-things-that-can-get-you-into-trouble.html |

Forty-seven students of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka in Anambra State, have been offered scholarship by the government of China through its October 1st Chinese Ambassador Scholarship Award Ceremony. The beneficiaries were presented with N100,000 cash each by the officials of Chinese embassy, led by Charge d’ Affaires to Nigeria, Lin Jing, at the school auditorium. The Vice-Chancellor (VC), Prof Joseph Ahaneku, described the gesture as “remarkable in the annals of the university”, explaining that the beneficiaries were indigent students who put up best performance in their courses of study. According to the VC, the beneficiaries were students studying courses, including vocational education, technical education and entrepreneurial studies. Prof Ahaneku disclosed that it was the first time Chinese government would give scholarship to students of the university studying locally. He pointed out that over 200 students of the university are pursuing higher degrees in different universities in China through similar grant by the Chinese embassy. The VC thanked the Chinese government for its special interest in the university, expressing optimism that the partnership would grow in strengths. Jing, who represented the Chinese ambassador at the event, said UNIZIK had special attraction to China because of the establishment of Confucius Institute in 2008, which, he said, had opened a window of mutual opportunities for Nigeria and China. The scholarship, Jing said, was initiated to mark the Chinese National Day, which fell on October 1. He added that the embassy chose 47 beneficiaries to represent 47 years of diplomatic relationship between Nigeria and China. He urged the beneficiaries to be ambassadors of the two countries, while expressing gratitude to the university for promoting Chinese values through higher education. At a recent retreat organised by the National Universities Commission (NUC) for the governing councils of federal universities, the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Anthony Anwukah expressed concern over reports that many graduates being turned out by Nigerian universities were not employable. And to address that challenge, he proposed the addition of an extra year for skill acquisition for graduates before their National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). But this is a proposal that makes little sense and should be discarded. In the reasoning of Anwukah, a former university vice-chancellor, the additional year would be similar to the one-year law training programme embarked upon by law students as well as the housemanship that medical students undergo. But this idea was ill-conceived because keeping the students on campus for longer periods is not a guarantee for improved knowledge, given the operating environment. So, the challenge of the moment is not about the number of years spent in school but the quality of the education being acquired. The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, says Nigerian universities can be the best in Africa, if they can enjoy a stable academic calendar. Ogundipe made the observation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos. The vice-chancellor was reacting to incessant strikes by labour unions in the Nigerian university system. According to him, there is the need for education stakeholders to effectively manage issues that result in strikes. “Universities especially the first generation ones in the country can be ranked best in Africa, if we can continue with a stable academic calendar. “There is need for everyone to look inward to ensure that we are always able to manage crisis in the system so that the country’s universities can be ranked among the best in the world,” Ogundipe said. He also said that there was the need for the stakeholders to take university administration and related issues more serious. Ogundipe urged that Nigerian university administration should be done in line with best practices. “We are talking about global ranking of universities, and here we are, still grappling with issues of strike,” he said. “An instance is the ongoing strike by the three non-academic staff unions of universities. “This does not speak well of us as a country because one cannot rule out their relevance in the running of the system. “As a manager of a university, I know that their strike has an effect on the operations of the institutions,” he said. .The don noted that many facilities for a conducive teaching and learning environment were being handled by the non-academic staff. “But I am sure that the academic staff would be up to their assignments. “This group of staff is not on strike. “The classrooms are open; as we resumed on December 27, lectures have commenced in most faculties in our university. “The strike is nationwide and not local; there is little the university on its own can do,” he said. According to him, the striking unions under the aegis of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) have been reasonable in their conduct. .“They are on strike, no doubt about that. Nobody has forced them to come to work since the declaration of the strike to the best of my knowledge. “My message is that there is need for an urgent and continuous dialogue between the striking workers and the Federal Government.“Dialogue is key,” he told NAN. NAN reports that the striking unions, under the aegis of JAC, had on Sept. 11, embarked on a nationwide indefinite strike over theon-implementation of an agreement they entered into in 2009 with the Federal Government. The JAMB 2018 form is out and a lot of millions of candidates would get the form but most of them and many would just a Course for choosing sake. Most of the candidates who weren't offered provisional admission by any institution not because their scores didn't reach the cut-off mark but because of wrong subject combination, to help in avoiding to choose the wrong course I hoping to help every candidates by giving my 5 tips To Help You In Choosing The Ideal Course in JAMB 2018. Before you continue have you read- How To Register for JAMB (Step by Step) if not try to read it later on http://www.campustrends.com.ng/2017/12/jamb-2018-how-to-register-for-jamb-step.html. Here are my tips To Help You In Choosing The Ideal Course in JAMB 2018. 1. List all the subjects that you offered in your O'level. All the listed subjects must be the passed subjects in your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB results. WHY?? The main reason I asked you to do this is that you can't be admitted for a Course if you didn't pass the required Subjects for that particular course. For example the required subjects to study Biochemistry in any University is Five (5) SSCE credit passes in English, Chemistry, Maths and Biology, if I didn't pass Chemistry and I went ahead to register for Biochemistry, then I can never be admitted for Biochemistry. 2. Pick the best graded Subjects in your results. (Optional) With the adopted system in most institution in Nigeria to grade O'level results you can choose a course that according to your best graded subjects, doing this can help raise your scores even before your Post UTME exams. 3. Pick the Subjects you Find more easier. Every course revolves round its required Subjects, for example, from my earlier illustration if I find Chemistry hard but I passed it in my SSCE and I went ahead in Studying Biochemistry then I would find the Chemistry part of Biochemistry as a problem. So out of your passed SSCE results tick the ones you find easiest, if your have done that move to my next tip. continue reading at http://www.campustrends.com.ng/2017/12/5-tips-to-help-you-in-choosing-ideal.html |
