FamilyRe: His Father Is Cheating On His Mum, What Should He Do? by candies(f): 12:37pm On Nov 13, 2007
@ almondjoy,
No, it definitly wasn't the same culture, homes and upbringings differ. My grand parents were just partially educated not like Okonjo's parents who were well read as well as she grew up in the village and remained there all her life, teaching and bringing up her girls.
My mom is very strong in a lot of ways, she's not a weakling by any standard, but do you expect my mom who was a secondary school teacher to walk out of her home with her 9 children of which 8 were girls and take to the streets or back to her parents house because her husband was cheating?

She was strong enough to stay, and we took up her case as soon as we could. my dad did all of that nonsense short of taking a second wife and even had kids outside but she still remained the pillar of the home, well respected, loved and valued by her kids.
FamilyRe: His Father Is Cheating On His Mum, What Should He Do? by candies(f): 12:04pm On Nov 13, 2007
@ almondjoy,
If you were brought up in a culture that preaches 'submissiveness' of woman to man, a culture where the man is infallable and where daughters as well as wives are not suppose to have a say in major decision, you might understand what I'm talking about.

Fortunately, my siblings and I aren't anything like my parents in that angle, so, we are the only strenght she's got. His infidelity is our problems too because it's a dance of shame and every one in our neighbourhood knew about it and made jest of our family.

To your question, NO, it didn't stop my dad from going around with women but it did stop him from doing it to our faces and shamelessly as if it were his birth right.
FamilyRe: I Want My Daughter To Wear A Chastity Ring by candies(f): 11:46am On Nov 13, 2007
I think it's a good idea but you must start by giving a very sound moral teaching and the benefits of chastity.

When i was about 20 and an undergraduate, I didn't want to get disvirgined even though i had a boyfriend.
I wore some very rare beads on my waist and told my boyfriend that my mom gave it to me as a sign of my virginity. I was allowed to take it off only on my wedding night after the marriage has been consumated.

He believed me and we kept a 4 year relationship without sex. I later told him I lied to keep us safe from sex. He thought that was the coolest thing I ever told him!
HealthRe: She Said She Felt Weak,is She Now Pregnant? by candies(f): 11:36am On Nov 13, 2007
This is indeed a tricky one.
I once asked if it is possible to get pregnant without actually penetrating.
I was told by a doctor that it was possible in a very low percentage. So, for the fact that you 'released' in her, that could be possible.
But there's no need to fret, the best thing to do is to go to the nearest clinic and do a pregnancy test or buy a portable tester and do the test.
If she's pregnant, get prepared to be a dad soon. If not, please stay away from such games if you're not ready to be a dad.

Note that being weak does not authomatically mean she's pregnant.
FamilyRe: His Father Is Cheating On His Mum, What Should He Do? by candies(f): 11:30am On Nov 13, 2007
I don't agree with almondjoy,
I know what the poster is talking about because this has happened to me too.
We confronted my dad and he threatened to disown all of us!
My mom knew but she was too scared to talk, she always apologised on our behalf and looked guilty. It's simply the African mentality, she's about 60 now and grew up in the village with strict African mentality and beliefs even though she's a graduate.
I can feel the pain of your friend but the only option is to talk to your dad. I'm glad he's male, let him call him and have a man to man talk with him.
Tell you what, even if he threatens brim stone and fire, he will curtail his actions and stop doing it as shamelessly as he's doing.
We actually told my dad he was disgracing us before the eyes of our friends and pers. He was so mad and wondered why 'he sent these wortless girls to school!'
It's a terrible world indeed.

I've not been following big brother as dedicated as I used to but the last time I checked I think guy that came in with Ashanti (can't remember his name) seem to be tripping for Ofuneka.
Do you think he really likes her or he knows she's going to win the money and trying to establish a relationship to enable him get a share of the money.
TV/MoviesRe: Movie Recommendation Thread by candies(f): 8:54am On Nov 08, 2007
Roots is one of the coolest movies I ever saw. It's so real, you can actually associate with it.
I'll also recommend From Dusk till Dawn the one by George Clooney if you like horror. That movie is fine

Hay Nairalanders!
It's so nice to be here finally. I've been following this forum for a while without registering and I've enjoyed it immensely.
I respect some great minds here and some really witty people.
No wonder it was so difficult for me to register. Everyother person has already discovered Naira land and taken up all the cool names! Imagine 147163 members!
All I could end up with was Candies. I hope it doesn't sound so bad.
I've got some problems of my own that I'll share later, but for now, I'll just be content to read and enjoy your posts.
Long live Nairaland!
