Asher79: Well, I think you already have the answers you were looking for. But permit me to add a few tips to some of the reasonable suggestions made here. 1. If your English will come good, you have to metaphorically strap on some error-sieving earpiece. This is because our socio-linguistic environment discourages the use of and improvement on good English. Sloppy use of English words is very prevalent in Nigeria. The moment you code-switch to good English, a lot of folks begin to hate on you and even boldly tell you to your face that 'u dey blow plenty grammar,' or 'u dey fonè'. 2. You have to try as much as you can to live in the Nigerian socio-linguistic culture as though you were not. In other words, you have to be firm, consistent and even defiant in your use of good English. But don't sound highfalutin (Hon. Patrick Obahiagbon is an example you must not copy). The beauty of language lies more in simplicity than in the use of 'fancy words'. The overuse of 'fancy words' may land you in grammatical hot waters. And you don't want to sound unEnglish. 3. Never compromise the use of good English, no matter what! Stick to the standard usage. Last but not the least, with all due respect to you, English grammar does not permit errors such as double use of comparatives, e.g. 'more easier,' 'more better,' nor the use of double superlatives, e.g. 'most happiest,' 'most richest'. It is rather 'much easier,' 'much better' and just simply 'the happiest' and 'the richest'. Stay blessed.
Asher, u know what? U just made my day. it couldnt have been better. Thank u, can I follow u?

Felixjude: In addition to most of the suggestions already given, make the dictionary your friend. I mean a mobile dictionary. Download a very good one with words transcription. Check up words, their Correct pronunciation and spellings on the go. As you surf the net and come across a new word, don't procrastinate, pause and check it up you'd be surprise how these words will stick and you will find yourself using them when necessary. Secondly, practice. Make friends whom you speak good English with, I bet you, in no time, it becomes part of you. Good luck.
yea I have Merriam Webster. any better one?

RedBenson: There are remarkable things about university education. Honestly, no matter how bad you were educationally, once you gain admission into university, the environment alone has 69% tendency to shaping you into becoming a better person. You begin to have that spirit of "i can do all things". Your English, you begin to look for people who speak better and make them your role model. You notice how they speak, thier compositions and compare to yours, take notice of the necessary mistakes/corrections and apply same in your future usage. When you think how shameful it would be when having presentation either in school or outside, there must be this desire for you to want to speak good English. The fact is, once you see yourself in university, you already know you are a bettter person with good exposure where opportunity will abound for you to show yourself as one who went to school to that level. In law, medicine, engineering, journalism, education and in almost every other field, you need good English to function well and this alone will compel you into desiring to prove yourself to all. That's the truth. If after your university education you still cant do well in your Spoken/Written English, i am sorry for you then. Another thing affecting many is nervousness. A lot of people speak bad English out of being nervous. These people can speak so well when not in crowd. This set of people write good English than speaking it. This is because thier minds are calmed and have better time and opportunity to make necessary corrections unlike when speaking it in public. Finally, so many factors constitute to the secret of speaking good English but it all start with "you" who is speaking or wants to speak good English.
bro, u just described me. I hardly speak in a crowd and if I do, I fumble

Kimmo: Read! Read often, especially fiction, not just motivational crap that everyone brandishes these days. Fiction writers use regular language, they aren't trying to impress anyone with grammar but try to reach a large audience.
Don't learn the big words. They'll come later. Read, read, read! You can start with the African Writers Series, Chinua Achebe, Cyprian Ekwensi etc. Simple grammar, classy diction, interesting reading too!
Thanks, present on Achebe's "There was a country"

2. Stop watching Nigerian Movies. #StopIt!

3. Watch more American Movies, preferably British movies (cos the Americans speak horrible english especially the Blacks).

4. Stop writing in short texts.. E.g: hw r u? It affects your spelling ability.
Yinkatolu: keep speaking it n don't be too conscious of making mistakes.

Hitherto, I have always admired people that speak good English- on T.v, films, neighborhood, and some friends.Even here on nairaland , we have a good number of people that write English as though they were related to Queen Elizabeth.
I recently discovered that its much more easier for me writing English than speaking it impeccably. What should one do to speak English authoritatively and impeccablyhuh
