MY TAKE ON THE MATTER
Plz neva allow that your brother to have malaria. At least every 4-5wks let him take malaria treatment. Malaria triggers off d convulsion. Take him to c a doctor in a specialist hospital or university teaching hospital abeg no b any roadside hospital to avoid had i know. The most popular drug is TEGRETOL CR He shuld sleep @least 6-8hrs daily n stay away frm alcohol. Plz wrk on his self esteem cos convulsion is gud @ damagin personal image. In some cases he may know when d convulsion wants to start, if he knows den he shuld run to a safe place n lie down . Lastly tell him he will out grow it.

Convulsion is caused wen d brain produces excess charges which makes d individual to behave lyk one under electric shock.

Dre is no permanent cure for it,but dre is a possibility he will outgrow it since he's still young.pls see a doc as soon as possible. Also dse r sme tips: make him lie on his side after an episode, keep him warm at all times,as much as posibl avoid mosquito bites,or anitin that can cause cold, feverish conditions and malaria, dnt make him feel different, allow him live a normal life and then pray. I wish him good health.

Speaking as a professional I have to say a lot of trash is being peddled on this thread. I dont have a lot of time to start dispelling them but the best advice given is to seek the services of a competent neurologist in a teaching hospital.

simply put convulsion is a type of seizure in which the muscles are affected which is what gives rise to the jerking observed. When the seizures become recurrent, the condition is then referred to epilepsy.

not all type of seizures cause convulsions. there is a type known as 'absence' in which no clonic twitching occurs. but its classified as seizureall the same.

convulsion cannot be cured because it is not a disorder as such. It is usually the symptom of underlying ailment. what can be done is to control the convulsive episodes whenever it arises., and to that end some posters eg spyder have given good advice on what to do.

By all means avoid any herbal medication. Also under no circumstance give a medication that has not been specifically prescribed for the child. I read up to two poster advising carbamzepine. They're probably unaware the drug can cause - yes cause - seizures in some individuals in certain types of seizures.

wish all the best smiley

At what age did he have the first episode?
Any history of head trauma in the past?
Any exposure to bright and sudden dim fading lights when young?
Any family history?

All these questions will be asked by a neurologist... usually its managed with anti-convulsants like tegretol, phenytoin etc. you can add folic acid to his drugs.
Usually if he remains seizure free for 2 years the drugs are stopped, but then he will benefit from a CT scan... i hope this helps. And please don't put a spoon in his mouth next time!!

From what you described so far, it seems your brother has Epilepsy(there are different types). Adequate history need be taken, , including any family history of such convulsions etc . He can be investigated for any underlying cause. An EEG can also be done. If that is the case of epilepsy, there is treatment for it. He has to be on anti-epiletic drug... Need find what provokes it(aura). Etc. . .

My immediate younger sister use to have convulsion when she was that age, my mum hardly leave at home with us then, cos she said we might not know how to handle her, few things I can I remember is that of putting spoon in her mouth so her teeth couldn't clamp together , and please go look for palm kernel oil or crude oil, those were the things my mum use to give her to swallow and rub it all over her afterwards. Don't wait till he starts convulsing, whenever his temperature is high give him some and rub it all over him. My sis own was so bad then that my mum was scared she might be disfigured but nothing of such happened. She was not treated at any hospital.
Lest I forget, please make sure to keep him away from kitchen and any fire to avoiding falling inside during convulsion.
Make sure you always have that at home, in fact that's why old women usually bring palm kernel oil with them when coming for umugwo. She is more than 25yrs now and have never had any incident since she was twelve .

Please ignore those telling you it cannot be cured, or that it is epileptic seizure . Look for the things I mentioned and keep it handy.he can even use it as his daily lotion wether sick or not. It will come sparingly and then stop and never come back. My sister own stopped and never came back since when she was like twelve.

Bolded: that's exactly how he feels anytime it occurs. On those 3 occasions, he was in bed. He'd just feel like waking up and fiammm he'd start like he's under electric shock as you said.

My mum has taken him to UCH (Ibadan) this morning shaa. Thanks so much!

As a child I watched my late father do it perfectly for a lot of patience from far and wide!.

Now he is late and none of my siblings who were much older could grapes it...

But back in Umuahia, my uncle who is now a royal father, I think he still does.

So am very sure it has a permanent cure!

Thanks everybody for your inputs, I really appreciate. The boy is fine now and we were assured at the hospital, that he's free from seizures henceforth.

Granny also made herbs a compulsion. It's called "Agbo ile tutu" ... That stuff smells like shii. Eww.

Thanks y'all for the help. I'm grateful..

osazee12: Pls dont put spoon in his mouth it will not a good thing to do, U might mess up his dentation, there are drugs that help asin, they are prophylaxic but not curative.
Convulsion can only be managed. Ensure he is on the floor and any tight cloth loosen and any object that can cause harm be removed around him when next he has an episode
Most importantly let him see a dr(neurologist). He will be fine

they are better off having a screwed dentition than living the rest of their lives without tongues.

Please stop embarrassing yourself. Please do better. What does palm oil have to do with a seizure? Shouldn't you be ashamed that in this day and age you are telling someone to rub palm oil on their body to cure what could possibly be a neurological issue? Sad thing is you are most likely educated. Your poor mother probably was not and used whatever information she had then. It is 2014 and she has probably spent a lot of money on educating you and yet you sound like you are no better informed than she was 25 years ago. Your post just really annoyed me.

I'm happy to hear about the progress of your brother.

Just some concerns, was he given medication at the hospital? If so what type? The reason I'm asking is due the herbs which your granny wants to give him. Recall my earlier comment. I'm not saying some of those herbal formulations don't work, it just that they may interact with the other orthodox drugs the child is on which may lead to undesirable effects. I'm speaking from experience here.

You are the one embarrassing yourself, fool, you think you know more than everybody else, you don't believe in local medicine but I do, I have seen what they can do not just in this instance, I go to hospital too but they have their limitations too and there are things that require simple cure that modern medicine will make the problem bigger than they are, from where I come from, palm kernel oil or crude oil has been and is still the cure for convulsion and it has never failed, up till now,so called modern nursing mothers still ask for these items to be sent to them ,every mother with kids should not lack them at home for emergencies wether you believe it or not is not my problem. I have said my piece, you can be whiter than the whites for all I care.
