Politics › Gishiri Demolition: FCTA Will Compensate Both Indigenes And Non-indigenes - Wike by CapitalLens(op): 9:48pm On Mar 17, 2025 |
...says compensation package increased to N1.3 billion
The Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike has reiterated the commitment of the FCT Administration to the payment of fair compensation to all owners of the recently demolished structures along the corridor of the Arterial Road N16 in Gishiri community, Katampe District, Abuja.
The FCT Minister made the pledge when he met with the representatives of the affected residents in Gishiri community, led by the Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Hon. Christopher Maikalangu, in his Life Camp official residence in Abuja on Monday, March 17, 2024, to address their concerns.
The Minister emphasized that the demolition exercise was carried out in the interest of public good, specifically to open up Abuja and enhance its status as a world-class city. He stressed that the project, which will see the completion of the Arterial Road N16, is not for personal gain but for the overall development of the FCT.
"There is no intention to suffer anybody," the Minister stated. "Government is for the people. There is no government that comes and says I want to suffer these people. It’s not possible. The essence of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration is the Renewed Hope. People have lost hope in this country and he said look, I’m going to bring back that hope. So, let nobody have at the back of his or her mind that our intention is to suffer you. It’s not possible and we can’t do that."
Acknowledging the challenges faced by those affected, the Minister revealed that the initial compensation budget of N655 million was scaled up to N1.3 billion to mitigate the economic impact. He clarified that the compensation rates were determined by government valuation standards and assured that due process was followed to ensure fairness and transparency.
Barr. Wike also took a strong stance against any form of discrimination in compensation payments, particularly between indigenous and non-indigenous residents, insisting that all owners of the affected structures must be duly compensated. "I’ve told you not to do that. There is nowhere in this world that there are non-indigenes," the Minister asserted. "If I have a property and road is passing there, why will you not pay me my money? Why will you say I am non-indigene? Where does it work?"
The Minister directed officials responsible for the disbursement of compensation funds to ensure that all eligible owners of affected structures receive the full amount of their approved compensation. He warned against any form of malpractice, stating, "Go and pay them their money and the exact amount.”
Addressing HRH Bala Akusu, Chief of Gishiri village regarding reported uncooperative behavior, the Minister expressed disappointment, reminding the Chief of previous meetings and agreements. He emphasized the urgency of completing the project by May and cautioned against obstructing development efforts.
The Minister also cautioned traditional rulers against issuing threats or engaging in acts that could disrupt peace. "We cannot allow people to take laws into their hands. No threat can work. I’m here to help you and support you. Mr. President has said look, do this thing but in doing it, give them human face. But giving it human face does not mean that the job will not go on."
He called for understanding and cooperation, particularly regarding the relocation process and the provision of essential services like water to satellite towns. He emphasized that the FCT Administration has demonstrated inclusivity by appointing indigenous residents to key positions, including the Head of Service and Permanent Secretaries.
"We have given you Head of Service, we have given you Permanent Secretaries, which has never happened, instead of you to rally round to support this government in what they are doing, you are issuing threats," the Minister stated.
The Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to inclusive development and urged all stakeholders to work together to ensure the successful completion of the Arterial Road N16 project.
Speaking earlier, representative of a youth group in Gishiri community, Adamu Godwin Umar thanked the FCT Minister for his support and commitment to addressing the issue of compensation for the affected residents.
He explained that the residents were not against the government's compensation efforts but rather complained about the location proposed for their relocation, which he described as a swampy area.
The Minister promised to visit the proposed relocation area on Wednesday.

AS FCT MINISTER DISPELS NOTIONS OF ETHNIC DIVISION IN RIVERS STATE
Stakeholders from the Kalabari Kingdom convened in Abalama Town, Asari-Toro Local Government Area of Rivers State, on Saturday, 15th March for a thanksgiving service and grand civic reception in honour of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and former Governor of Rivers State, Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike.
Organized by Ijaw stakeholders under the aegis of the New Associates, the event celebrated Barrister Wike’s significant contributions to the region. The ceremony featured vibrant cultural displays, including traditional dances and performances by women and youths showcasing the community's appreciation for his legacy.
In his address at the event, Chairman of the occasion, Chief Ferdinand Alabraba, who is also the Chairman, Elders Council of Rivers State, emphasized the unprecedented honor bestowed upon FCT Minister by the Kalabari nation over the past three years. He highlighted the selection of Abalama Town as the venue for the reception, citing its profound significance to the Kalabari people.
Chief Alabraba thanked the FCT Minister for his commitment to inclusivity and the rule of law and for ensuring a sense of belonging for all ethnic groups in Rivers State and pledged the continued support of the Kalabari nation for the FCT Minister.
Director General, Border Community Development Agency, Chief George Kelly, while also speaking at the event, commended Barrister Wike for his contributions to the development of the Ijaw nation and the Kalabari community. He specifically acknowledged the Minister's role in facilitating the historic election of an Ijaw son as Governor of Rivers State.
In his response, the FCT Minister acknowledged the significance of the reception, and expressed his profound gratitude to the Kalabari nation for their capacity and support. He said their show of solidarity has dispelled any notion of ethnic or tribal division within the state.
According to the Minister, “What you have done today is to tell the world that all the noise in the radio is not the real thing. You are the Kalabaris, you are of the Ijaw nation and you are receiving me today. God will continue to bless you. I will continue to stand by you. I will continue to support you wherever you want me to support you”.
Barr Wike stated that his endorsement of the current Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, stemmed from genuine love for the Ijaw people. “Let me say it clearly, what I said on my interview, people will want to misinterpret it. Whatever they want to misinterpret is their business. I want to repeat it; we are all working together. If we don’t work together, it would have been difficult to produce a Governor. That’s what I said”.
Addressing the current political situation in Rivers State, Barr. Wike attributed the conflict to personal interests and the Governor’s alliance with those who had previously opposed his election.
He recalled his initial agreement with the Governor to foster unity and progress, but expressed regret over the subsequent breakdown of trust and the adoption of policies that deviated from their shared vision.
Barr. Wike criticized the Governor’s decision to surround himself with individuals who had previously opposed his candidacy, alleging that they were providing detrimental advice. He also condemned the seizure of allowances for State Assembly members, which he deemed unjust.
“All these things you are seeing, I told the Governor, God gave you something, eat it peacefully. It is not good for you to face this crisis. But they told him you are governor. You have money. Money is not everything. All these people, they have nothing to offer. See where we are now. How far?
Regarding calls for peace, Barr. Wike restated that he will not interfere with the duties of the State Assembly. He expressed disappointment with the Governor's repeated reneging on agreements, including those brokered by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and asserted that the Governor’s actions demonstrated a lack of reliability.
He said, “I’m not going to stop the State Assembly members from performing their constitutional duties. The Assembly should be allowed to perform their constitutional duties. People who love peace don’t threaten people. The more you threaten, the more you worsen the situation. Assembly people should do their work. Whatever they deem necessary that is constitutional, they should do”.

Politics › Wike Reveals ₦39 Billion Renovation Of International Conference Centre (ICC) by CapitalLens(op): 7:21am On Mar 13, 2025 |
...Calls for cooperation, support of FCT residents for ongoing projects
The Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, has announced that the comprehensive renovation of the International Conference Centre (ICC) is progressing rapidly and is on track for completion by May 2024, at a total cost of N39 billion.
This announcement followed an extensive inspection tour conducted by the Minister on Wednesday, March 12, 2024, of key infrastructure projects slated for commissioning to mark the second anniversary of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
During the tour, Minister Wike expressed satisfaction with the progress of the ICC renovation, emphasizing its significance as a national landmark. "This is at the cost of N39 billion that we are spending and all the materials are on ground. So, I can say that they are 70 percent (complete) and they have assured that they will complete it and handover by May," he stated.
The Minister recalled the original vision for the ICC, as highlighted in former President General Ibrahim Babangida’s memoirs, which aimed to establish a world-class venue for international conferences and meetings. He lamented the previous deterioration of the facility under private concession, but expressed delight at the current rehabilitation efforts.
"Upon completion, the ICC will be a source of national pride," Minister Wike affirmed. He lauded the quality of work being carried out by the contractors, including reputable firms like Julius Berger and CGC, across all projects inspected.
In addition to the ICC, the Minister also inspected the construction of the 15-kilometer Outer Southern Expressway (OSEX) from Ring Road 1 (RR1) to Wasa junction, and the Life Camp to Karmo dual carriageway. He reiterated the administration's commitment to delivering impactful projects that will improve the lives of FCT residents.
Minister Wike called for the continued support of all FCT residents, including traditional rulers and youths, for the government’s infrastructure development initiatives. He urged cooperation with contractors to ensure timely project completion, particularly during the current favorable weather conditions.
"We are not here to bring hardship on anybody but to improve our lives. I know how difficult it is but again everybody has to make sacrifices," the Minister said. "We are pleading with residents to cooperate with the various contractors that are building road projects so that we can have it completed on time".

Politics › Wike Addresses Compensation Issues In The FCT by CapitalLens(op): 3:59am On Mar 13, 2025 |
…PLEDGES TO SHOWCASE COMPLETED PROJECTS TO MARK PRESIDENT TINUBU’S 2ND ANNIVERSARY
The FCT Minister, Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, on Wednesday expressed deep concern over attempts by some members of the Abuja original inhabitants to sabotage the developmental efforts of government in the FCT over the lingering issues of compensation and relocation.
During a media chat with select journalists in the FCT, the Minister clarified that the FCT Administration has made significant efforts to address the concerns of affected communities. He stated that compensations have been disbursed over several years, and relocation processes are ongoing. However, he condemned the persistent demands for further compensation by some individuals who have already received payments.
“Compensations have been made several years ago, I can tell you that,” the Minister affirmed, citing examples where the FCTA has even doubled the legally prescribed compensation to alleviate hardship. He emphasized that while the government is committed to providing fair compensation, it will not succumb to unreasonable demands.
Regarding recent demolitions along road corridors, Barr. Wike explained that these actions are necessary to facilitate crucial road projects in the public interest. He reiterated the government’s offer to compensate and relocate affected residents, but clarified that the FCTA will not construct individual houses for those affected along road corridors. “The point we are making, if we are coming to a community to say let the entire community relocate, then you talk about building houses for them, not road corridor where 20 houses are affected,” he emphasized.
The Minister highlighted the FCT Administration’s commitment to completing ongoing projects, with plans to commission several roads in May to mark President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s second year anniversary. He also announced plans to partner with the private sector to improve public transportation by establishing a safe and efficient system, including the construction of bus terminals
Addressing the issue of youth empowerment, Barr. Wike expressed disappointment over reports that vehicles procured for youth empowerment programs were sold off by beneficiaries. He stressed the importance of a work ethic and genuine commitment to self-reliance. He said “We bought vehicles, have you seen any of the vehicles on the road? They’ve sold them. We are trying to empower you to own a business and you are sabotaging it”.
The Minister however expressed confidence that his recent investment driven trip to Italy where he interacted with the Lombardy Regional President, Attilo Fontana, alongside key agribusiness and vocational education investors, will provide further opportunities for the youths to be trained to become meaningfully engaged.
He said, “I’m very happy that it’s one of the trips that yielded results. Regional heads like the Mandate Secretary of Education and Mandate Secretary of Agriculture were part of the delegation, so they are working at the details now with the officials of Lombardy. I feel so happy that our youths will now have several areas where they can be trained and then try to be self-employed. I believe in the next one week, they would have finished all the documentations and then we will be able to send the first set of our youths to Lombardy for training”.

...Calls on residents not to sabotage government's development efforts.
The Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, on Wednesday, March 12, 2024, conducted an extensive inspection tour of some major infrastructure projects slated for commissioning in May, to coincide with the second anniversary of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
The projects include the construction of the 15-kilometer Outer Southern Expressway (OSEX) from Ring Road 1 (RR1) to Wasa junction, the Life Camp to Karmo dual carriageway, and the comprehensive renovation of the International Conference Centre (ICC).
Following the tour, the Minister expressed profound satisfaction with the pace and quality of work on the projects. He conveyed confidence in the contractors, to deliver high-quality jobs within the agreed timelines. “I can tell you I’m very pleased with the quality of work going on by the contractors…the contractors are very reputable, Julius Berger, CGC and others. So, I’m very happy with what we have seen,” the Minister stated.
Turning his attention to the ongoing renovation of the ICC, the Minister recalled the vision behind its establishment, as recently highlighted by former President, General Ibrahim Babangida, in his memoirs noting that the aim of constructing the ICC was to create a world-class venue for international conferences and meetings. He lamented the deterioration of the ICC under private concession.
However, the Minister expressed delight at the significant progress now being made in its rehabilitation. “This is at the cost of N39 billion that we are spending and all the materials are on ground. So, I can say that they are 70 percent (complete) and they have assured that they will complete it and handover by May,” he said.

Politics › Wike Oversees Removal Of Structures On Road Corridor In Gishiri Village, Abuja by CapitalLens(op): 6:05pm On Mar 11, 2025 |
…Warns residents against sabotaging government developmental efforts
The Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike today supervised the demolition of structures obstructing the construction of the Arterial Road N16 in Gishiri village in Katampe District, Abuja.
Addressing the press at the site, the Minister disclosed that the residents were duly served with eviction notices and clearly communicated the necessity of their cooperation with the government. He said this was vital for the contractor, Messrs CGC, to complete the road project and hand it over by the end of May.
He however regretted that the residents rejected government’s offer of compensation and pledge to facilitate their relocation, despite being granted one-week extension as requested by the village chief, thereby impeding work on the road project.
He said the road project was in the public's overriding interest and not a case of acquiring land for private development, warning that the FCT Administration would not tolerate the sabotage of projects of public interest.
He said he was personally involved in the demolition exercise to send a message that it would no longer be business as usual.
According to the FCT Minister,” We served them with the eviction notice and we told them the need for them to cooperate with the government so that the contractor, CGC will be able to complete this road and then hand it over by May ending.
Speaking further, the Minister said, “The traditional ruler of course pleaded with us to give them one week. The money for compensation has been made available and we did also promise that in spite of that, we will still make available somewhere they can relocate.
“But with all these assurances, it did appear, from what I got in the report, that work is not going on. I informed the traditional ruler that this work has to go on and enough is enough. No government will fold its arms and allow people to sabotage a project for the interest of the public. It’s not as if anybody is coming to acquire land to build houses”.
Addressing concerns regarding the impact of the demolition on residents of the village and public perception, the Minister asserted that ample time had been provided for the residents to vacate. He stated that the government would not halt a crucial project for the sake of a few individuals, having granted them enough time and made funds available for compensation.
He said, “enough time has been given. Are we going to say because of a few people, government will not do their work? No. We have given them more than two, three months. I cannot fold my hands and say let the job stop. No. we will not do that”.
Speaking further, the Minister said, “We have promised to relocate them to another area and even the money for compensation has been given, but they said they will not accept, which means the job will not go on and we will not allow that”.
He reiterated the government's commitment to relocating the affected residents and providing compensation and advised them to cooperate with the FCT Department of Resettlement and Compensation to finalize the modalities for their relocation.

While acknowledging that the previous administration initiated the projects which have been underway for some time, the Minister praised the contractors' performance and capabilities, expressing confidence in their ability to deliver high-quality work.
The Minister stated that previously encountered issues delaying the projects, including issues of compensation and resettlement of communities along the OSEX left hand service carriageway, as well as securing approval from the Ministry of Works for the INEX to cross over the rail line at Idu have been addressed, paving the way for construction to proceed without further hindrance.
He said the contractors executing the projects have significantly mobilized to the project sites, following the resolution of the issues and were also committed to completing the projects and handing them over by May this year.
According to the Minister, “The one of Apo (The 15 kilometer left hand service carriageway of the OSEX from RR1 to Wasa junction), the contractor, CGC has said that they will speed up work to complete it by May. What took time has to do with compensation issues and resettlement of the communities on the road corridor. But now that that has been done, they have mobilized seriously”.
Speaking further on the INEX, he said “The contractor has also said that they are working very hard to see that they handover by the end of May. Looking at the bridge, you can see it's serious work. What delayed was the approval from the Ministry of Transportation to, you know, cross the rail line. But now that the approval has come, we believe that more work will be done”.

The Honourable Minister of the FCT, Barrister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike has addressed the ongoing strike by primary school teachers in the Territory, expressing regret and pledging to find a swift resolution. The Minister also reaffirmed the administration's commitment to the timely completion of ongoing infrastructural projects across the FCT.
The Minister made these pledges in Abuja on Thursday, February 13, 2025, while addressing journalists shortly after a routine inspection of ongoing critical projects across the city centre.
Speaking on the teachers' strike, the Minister stated that the matter came up two days ago when he met with the Area Council Chairmen and the Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud to discuss security issues, adding that he immediately directed the Minister of State to engage with the teachers to understand their concerns.
The Minister acknowledged the teachers' demands for the implementation of the national minimum wage, assuring that the administration will work with the Area Councils to ensure compliance.
He said, “It’s really unfortunate that they have gone on strike over this issue of minimum wage. But we will make sure that the teachers will go back. We will do everything we can to see that the Area Councils implement the minimum wage as approved by the National Assembly".
However, the Minister also emphasized the importance of dialogue and consultation, urging the teachers to also consider the impact that the strike will have on the FCT children. He said, “I have also said that the teachers should also know that we are talking about the impact; before you go on strike like this, have proper dialogue and consultation”.
Speaking further, the Minister said, “Just two days ago, I was told about this and I directed the Minister State and for them to go on strike knowing fully well that they have been invited, it is not good. We are talking about the interest of Nigerians, not the interest of a few. Strike has never solved any problem; rather it has created more problems. So, I believe that within a short time, we will sort it out.”
Meanwhile, the Minister also spoke on the critical infrastructural project sites visited, including the ongoing rehabilitation of the International Conference Centre (ICC), the construction of Collector Road CN8 (connecting the Obafemi Awolowo Way to the Dakibiyu District), the construction of the Abuja Division of the Court of the Appeal office complex i as well as the full scope development of Arterial Road N20 (Wole Soyinka Way), including its interchanges.

He commended the contractors for their evident skill and dedication, while simultaneously pledging the government's commitment to providing consistent and sufficient funding.
According to the Minister, “One is happy that the contractors are doing well and on our own part too, we will make sure that we will not fail so that they will not find excuses why they were unable to hand over the projects to us on the agreed time."
Addressing the issue of stolen manhole covers, the Minister assured residents that the procurement process for replacements is underway. He said, “You don’t expect that it will be done immediately. Procurement has to take place and you know that procurement is not a one-day affair. But be assured that the FCDA will all do all they can to make sure that all that were lost are covered”.

Politics › Re: Tax Reforms; "Nigerians Are Over-pampered, Don’t Want To Put In Work." Uzor Kalu by CapitalLens: 5:28am On Jan 19, 2025 |
This man is simply pointing out the entitlement mentality in parts of Nigeria where their leaders do not want to put in the required work to become self sustaining but would rather continue to leech on other regions, under the guise of equality.
Unfortunately, most commenters here didn't take the time to read before rushing to attack him because they couldn't see the veiled reference to so called sectional leaders who want a continuation of the status quo that encourages indolence and unproductiveness.
The unfortunate part here is that most people attacking him actually stand to the benefit if the proposed tax reform is passed into law and allows for 60 percent derivation in resource allocation.
Sadly, the recommendations of the Bill has been whittled down by by the NGF, further entrenching the vicious cycle that the country has found itself and a lot of the people here don't event ealize it.
Burna Boy recently said he'll never fight for any Nigerian. And now with the abuses coming the way of Orji Uzo Kalu for simply speaking up for oppressed Nigerians, im sure he'll be wondering if there is need to continue to fight for this lot. |
Politics › FCT Minister's C Of O Issuance Drives Economic Empowerment – Media Aide by CapitalLens(op): 8:54pm On Jan 15, 2025 |
The recent issuance of over 5,481 Certificates of Occupancy (C of O) by FCT Minister Barrister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike signifies a commitment to not only infrastructural development but also the economic empowerment of Nigerians, according to his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication and New Media, Mr. Lere Olayinka.
During a press briefing on Wednesday, Mr. Olayinka emphasized that this significant step aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's "Renewed Hope" agenda.
He explained, that C of Os empowers landowners in numerous ways as it enables them to secure loans for business ventures and encourages others to also invest in land ownership.
Mr. Olayinka while also stating that the previous long wait for C of Os discouraged many from completing the process stressed, "With the assurance of prompt issuance, we expect a surge in applications."
Mr. Olayinka further elaborated on the economic implications, saying, "Imagine owning a 2,000sqm plot. With a C of O, you can engage a developer to build on the land. This not only generates income but also provides you with a valuable asset. Our focus is on highlighting the economic benefits of this initiative, rather than simply comparing it to past performance."
The media aide added that the Minister's actions in this regard, were fostering trust and efficiency, with C of Os now being issued within two weeks of payment, a stark contrast to the previous years-long delays.
To ensure transparency, he said the names of C of O recipients will be published in national newspapers and disseminated via SMS.
Recognizing that many landowners may be unaware of their document availability, Mr. Olayinka added that the Abuja Geographic Information System (AGIS) will also implement an automated SMS system to notify recipients of both readiness and subsequent collection.
