I was speechless, I couldn't imagine working from 11 am till 6 pm without any break and at worst, working while standing... (no single seat in that factory, except for the supervisors.)
I asked my partner again that "is this how you've been working all these while? " she told me yes, that with time, I'll get used to it.

I asked my partner that, "is it possible for me to get my pay for today alone since I don't think I can ever come again tomorrow" she told me no, that even my pay for today will be deducted from my salary by one baba like that and again, I'll be given apron, nose mask and cap, all of whose fee will be deducted from my salary, apron is 1500(my daily pay is just 1080 oh)... imagine....


then and there, I decided it's over, I can't continue working like and elephant and be expected to go home with such meagre sum.... that's an average of 100 naira per hour....

when I told my partner I'm leaving, she was pleading that I should wait till closing and that she'll probably be blamed that she incited my withdrawal and I told her no way I'm fucking working till 6 pm as at then, I was on the brink of collapsing.

I met the supervisor, they were just making jest of me, asking me all manner of questions like... you can't cope? na your first time be this sebi na you dey find work... etc...


as I was about to exit the factory, one old woman rushed me asking me to give her my cap I was wearing (the one the factory people gave me) and I told her that they'll still request for everything. and they did.

I left the place feeling seriously tired, embarrassed and depressed.

do you even know that when our machine stopped working, my partner told me to quickly join another machine that the Indians must not see us standing idly and truthfully, I saw how pissed one moustache-filled-nosed guy was when he passed me by and I was just like ..." I don't give a shit, fire me if you will, ain't doing this labor work again".


now imagine the amount of work done, energy expended, risk of getting your hand entrapped into the machine, risk of skeletal deformation, muscle and tendon stress as a result of standing for over 10 hours all for the cost of just 1080 ?


when I got home, I searched for the minimum wage for Indians in India, and I saw that it's $3(1,143 naira) per 8 hr work. how come they are now doing 1080 for about 11 hours work here in Nigeria... and the worst is that Nigerians are doing that seriously passionately.

is this what we should accept.... using Nigerians like machine in our own country....


I believe the issue of #ENDSARS is just a scratch on the face of the rust covering many things in Nigeria. the issue of underemployment by so many foreign and private companies is really alarming and demands serious and apt attention.

I have worked in a nylon producing company.. It was hell... At least you were to be paid not less than 25k monthly... I also worked in a bakery... I did kpom kpom work... The most I was paid doing those factory jobs in the east as a graduate then was 8k.. And the 8k never completes cos I always break one rule or the other... Like closing early to go and watch football... Imagine working from 7am to 8pm and I will not be paid cos I closed by 6 or 6.30 to watch champions league.. A different of 1h 30 Mins yet I would not be paid for the whole day.. When I discovered it.. I stopped coming to work on football days..
