Recently, the way she kept popping up in our house, especially when no one else was around, showed that she really wanted me to get closer to her, but I wasn’t keen. I was just twenty-five.

Although she had a pretty face and a curvy figure, having an affair with a lady many years older than me was not something I really fancied.

“I came to keep this jar of ice cream in the freezer,” she said, showing me a polythene nylon she was holding. “Can you be kind enough to keep it there for me? When I close and I’m going home, I’ll come and take it.”

“Okay,” I said and took the nylon from her.

It looked like it was a 500 gram of ice cream. “I’ll keep it in the freezer right away.”

I left her in the sitting-room and took what she handed me to the freezer in the kitchen. When I came back, she was still standing where I had left her.

I looked at her enquiringly.

“Aren’t you lonely staying alone in the house?” she asked. “Why are you always holed up inside?”

I shrugged. “Let’s just say I’m an introvert person. I’m a person who is not outgoing.”

I sat down and stared absent-mindedly at the television.

“Can I join you for some minutes?” she asked.

“Of course, sure. If you’re not too busy. Please, sit down.”

She sat on the couch opposite me. “I told my apprentices that I was going on lunch break.”

She didn’t have to explain why she came around. I shrugged and smiled briefly.

“That’s okay. You don’t need to explain why you are here.”

She smiled briefly too. “So, what do you do to kill boredom?”

I sighed. “Well, I watch t.v and read.”

She made a face. “You still read?”

“Of course. Nothing can stop me from reading.”

She nodded. “I think I like that. What kind of programmes do you like to watch on t.v?”

“Movies and sports.”

“Ah, I suppose the bulk of that sports will be football.”

I grinned. “You’re right. And you, what do you do in your spare time?”

“Music. I love to listen to music a lot.”

I was tempted to ask her what kind of music but I decided not to. I could guess the genre she liked.

“So, you don’t intend to go out today?” she asked.

“No.”

“Why don’t you just come around to my place in the evening for a change?”

Come to her place? I blinked rapidly. She lived at Gbaja, which was not far from where I lived. I knew her house, but had never entered the building. I shrugged.

“That will be no problem. I’ll probably just take a stroll to come around.”

She smiled radiantly and stood up. “Thank God you know the place. I close the saloon by seven-thirty, so by eight, I’ll be at home. I’ll be expecting you this evening, Tony.”

“Sure, I’ll be there,” I said, replicating her smile. “Be expecting me.”

She moved to the door. “Alright, see you.”

“Okay.”

After she had gone, I thought over our conversation. Sister Bukky wanted your intimacy, part of my mind said. I sighed.

If I didn’t want any such thing, the best thing for me to do was not to venture to her place. But then, I asked myself why I should chicken out. Had I not told her that I would come?

What was wrong with being intimate with her?

No one could ever say you raped her, my mind said, as there was no coital penetration or actual sex. But another part of my mind was full of recrimination.

You shouldnt have done that, it said. What if her mum or dad ever got to know? What if they got you arrested?

I shrugged the feeling of guilt off. Was Martha a child? Under the law, was she not qualified as an adult? If she decided to marry right away, would she be broaching any law? Was I violating any known edict by engaging her in adult game? She was a young adult for Gods sake.

I got to my Alapere residence few minutes to eight in the night. Bola, my lady friend was already at home, cooking in the small kitchen. Hello, dear, I greeted.

"Hi. How was work?"

"Fine. It was quite hectic, but I thank God."

She was wearing a bum short and a spaghetti top. I changed to casuals too. Some minutes later, she was through with the meal. We ate the beans and fried plantain in silence.

I didnt really like beans but she gave me many reasons to like it.

Changing into what she wore meant she would sleep overnight. She used to do that once in a while and it was always a welcome gesture. After the meal, we rested for a while before retiring to the bedroom.

I held her lovingly as a prelude to love-making but she stiffened her body.

"Theres an urgent matter we need to discuss," she said.

I sighed. "What urgent matter is that?"

There was a slight pause. "I must say I dont like the way this relationship is going."

Oh, here we go again, I thought. "What do you mean?"

Again, a pause. "I don't like the fact that you only regard me as a bed-mate. I dont like the fact that you see me only as a sex object."

I sat upright on the bed. "But, thats not true. How could you say that?"

"Really? If it is not true, how come any time I visit you, the most important thing you desire is sex?"

I shook my head. Even if it was true, I would not admit it. "But that is not true. Ive always loved you."

"Hmn," she scoffed. "If you're right, and you know you are, prove it."

"You mean I've not been proving my love to you all this while?"

"No. Theres a simple way to prove it: fix a date for our wedding."

I suspected all along that that was where she was going. Oh, dear Bola.

"I see. So, fixing date for our wedding is a proof of my love, abi?"

She nodded, like a girl desiring something sweet to placate her. I quickly went into thoughts. What would I lose if I fixed dates tentatively for the engagement and the wedding?

It was not as if she was not a good lady. She was pretty and homely. So far, she looked like a good wife material. All the same, I was quite scared of making full commitments.

I could not make any contact with him again as his lines were not going. Now, I was facing him in the least expected place.

“So where have you been? What happened to your lines?” I asked. “Just before the end of the service year, I could not contact you again. Where’re you now?”

“I lost my phones,” he replied. “As for where I am now, it’s a long story. We need to meet so that we can discuss.”

“You live around here?”

He shook his head “I actually live off Adeniran Ogunsanya, but once in a while, I do come to this supermarket to get some things.” He put his hands in his pocket and brought a complimentary card.

“Tony, that’s my number. Give me a call. I’ll tell you where and when to meet. Sorry, I don’t have much time now.”

I nodded as I took the card from his hand. “Okay, Kay. I will definitely give you a call.”

I shook hands with him again and left. From Randle Way, I walked to our residence at Abina. My mind kept thinking about Kay. What kind of work could he be doing for him to be riding that fine car?

He looked posh and like a guy who had arrived. It was just about two years ago and a year ago that we finished our university and national service respectively. Wasn’t he lucky to have achieved what he had achieved within a short time?

After the national service, I had returned to Surulere, Lagos, where I stayed with my parents. I had written many letters of application and was still awaiting possible employment. Kay must be lucky, I decided.

Later, in the afternoon, I brought the card he had given me out and examined it. It indicated that he was Director of Kays Investment. Now, what exact kind of business was that? I shrugged.

My intimacy would soon make me to find out. Alone in the sitting-room, I decided to call one of his numbers. He picked the call after the third ring.

“Hello?”

“Hello, Kay. This is Tony on the line.”

“Ah, Tony my pal. How’s everything?”

I sighed. “Well, as they say, I’m managing.”

“Why don’t you let’s meet tomorrow? Let’s say by twelve mid-day.”

“No problem. Where?”

“Meet me at Exquisite Hotel on Ogunlana Drive. I’ll be at the lobby.’

I sighed. The hotel was a popular one in the area, although I had never entered inside before.

“Okay, Kay. I’ll be there. This is my number.”

“Alright. See you.”

He cut the line. Briefly, I wondered why he should ask me to see him in a hotel. Then, I shrugged. I was just getting to know him again, I thought.

Few minutes later, the bell-push sounded. I was the only one in the house as mum and Tony had gone to work. Mum should return by six p.m., which was about a couple of hours to go. As for dad, he would not be returning until eight p.m. or thereabout. I went to the door, wondering if mum was the one.

“It’s me, Bukola,” the caller said.

“O-okay.” I opened the door for her. “Hello, Sister Bukky.”

“Hi.”

Sister Bukola, also known as Sister Bukky, was a lady most likely in her early thirties. She owned a hair-dressing saloon on our street. She was very friendly with my mum and my kid sister. Besides, we attended the same church where she was one of the choristers. She and I were friends too, but not intimate.

Recently, the way she kept popping up in our house, especially when no one else was around, showed that she really wanted me to get closer to her.

The best thing for the FG to do is:

1. Ease the economy more.

2. Charge security agents to strictly enforce safety measures.

3. Keep on harping it on the citizens to observe safety rules.

4. Be more transparent in all its dealing.

Nigeria needs to wake up and break herself loose from the shackles of tribalism and nepotism.

A society that thrives on unfairness is doomed.
