There are three non-risky and highly rewarding investment portfolios in the banks through which customers can be assured of getting some profits if they invest their savings in them.
The portfolios are treasury bills, bonds and tenured deposits.
All that the customer needs to do is to go to any of his/her bank’s branches, fill and submit an application form, state his bank account, amount to be invested from his bank deposit and the preferred tenor.
Treasury bills are short-term debt instruments issued by the Federal Government through the Central Bank of Nigeria to provide short-term funding for the government.
In simple terms, investing in treasury bills is the process of lending money to the government, with the prospect of collecting it back with interest, usually within a year.
It is one of the investment areas accessible through banks to enable customers to invest in high-yielding assets, which are non-risky and tax-free.
Treasury bills offer investors attractive and competitive interest rates on investments and are backed by the guarantee of the Federal Government.
They are usually issued for tenures of 91 days, 182 days and 364 days, but banks usually specify the minimum amount the depositors can invest.
Interests that investment in treasury bills yield are credited into the customer’s bank account.
They are good investments for idle savings, which yield returns, and they are also very liquid and can be converted to cash quickly.
Treasury bills have no transaction costs and can also be used as collateral for loans.
If the depositor needs his money before the maturity date, he can convert it to cash but will not be paid the full promised amount.
A major disadvantage of treasury bills is that the returns may not be as high as what may be obtainable in highly risky ventures. Notwithstanding, it has the advantage of earning assured profits.
Bonds, on the other hand, are debt instruments issued by the Federal Government to raise funds for capital projects.
As an investor, you can lend the government the amount you are investing in bonds and earn interest (coupon) every six months until the maturity of the bond when the principal amount will be repaid.
Bonds assure the investor of the principal amount at maturity and periodic interests.
Payment of interest is through issuance of cheques or warrants, which are similar to the dividend warrants for shares.
This form of investment is not risky because it is guaranteed by the government.
Bonds are typically long-term investment, but you can decide to sell them off on the bond market if you want to quit.
The interest earned is tax-free and banks usually specify the minimum amount that can be invested in bonds.
Tenured or fixed deposits allow the customer to keep the money in the bank for a certain period of time.
The investor is paid monthly interest, while he receives the principal amount at maturity.
Customers can have access to the funds invested before the maturity date by terminating the fixed deposit.
Instead of leaving your idle cash in savings accounts, which will earn you little interest, or current account where your bank will be deducting charges, you may consider investing your money in one of the investment portfolios.

Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima, said he abandoned the use of bulletproof cars as an act of sympathy with the suffering masses who had no means of self protection from terrorists.
Shettima stated this on Sunday in an interview with theNews Agency of Nigeriain Maiduguri, Borno State.
He said the action was also aimed at showing that the terrorists had no super-natural powers.
“We have to dare the terrorists; I have bulletproof cars, but I do not use them; I want to be exposed to the elements as the ordinary people do,” Shettima said.
He said the bulletproof cars were only kept for the use of visitors who might be afraid to use ordinary cars.
“We have so many bulletproof cars but we only use them for our guests.
“Sometimes I drive myself round the town to see things for myself,” Shettima said.
He said with the gradual return of peace in the state, his government would unfold a developmental agenda soon.
“By the grace of God, we are poised for a great change. Believe me, in the next couple of months, you will see changes in the fortunes of the people of the state,” Shettima said.
He said the recent successes recorded by the military against Boko Haram terrorists had made the state capital a safe haven for all Nigerians
He said, “Maiduguri is more secure than even Lagos or Abuja.
“There are two million people living in Maiduguri; we celebrated Sallah without any incident.”
He said the government would take advantage of the Boko Haram crisis to ensure better welfare for the people.
“This crisis has accorded us the opportunity to merge small settlements and provide better infrastructure to uplift the living standard of the people.
“This is more especially for those living in remote communities,” Shettima said.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, has revealed that the presidency spent less than £50,000 (N20.5m) on the treatment of an ear infection of President Muhammadu Buhari in the United Kingdom.
Shehu in a Facebook post on Sunday night while responding to an allegation by Prof. Farooq Kperogi that Buhari spent £6m during his treatment in June, said Buhari’s government is known for accountability and curbing waste.
Shehu said the Presidency had approved over £50,000 for the President’s treatment but Buhari rejected it.

To Charlieboy Oputa, the government of the day does not listen to the ad­vice of its citizens, and does not even care to plan for the future of its youths, who according to him are the future leaders of the country. He said that he has become tired, having talked and written to the government several times for that which ac­cording to him was treated as if he has been talking and and writing to a brick wall. In his conclusion, that was enough to say that the government is deaf, dumb and does not care for the youth. He urged the focused ones among the youth to come together for their fu­ture. Due to the carefree atti­tude of the government, most of the youths, according to him engage in vices such as armed robbery, kidnapping and other forms of restive­ness. He equally apportioned blames to the parents for fail­ure to give the young ones the kind of guidance expected of them, but he didn’t hesitate to point out that the reason behind the failure of parents was because the parents were handicapped and frustrated by poor economy and environ­ment caused by bad leadership in Nigeria. And because of this, the kids according to him were left on their own without proper guidance and the result was restiveness of all kinds.
However, the youths’ moti­vator informed that his plan to host Njiko Festival in his country home of Oguta in Imo state was not only to re­kindle Igbo culture, value and language, but also to sell hope to the youths in the south east. He said that he has done things in the west and the north and this time around, he wants to go homewards. Oputa there­fore informed that he didn’t start his charity work from the east, adding that part of what he does is philanthropy. “May be out of guilt or what have you, I have to go homeward to see how I can use my life story to inspire young people to chase their dream. My suc­cess is as a result of my several failures and I shall use my experience to inspire the young ones in the east,” he promised.
Charlieboy therefore said that the festival would go a long way to make the youth to be focused, saying that it is when you are focused, then you will be busy as well as think for the future. Though he maintained not to give any advice to the gov­ernment again for what he ear­lier saw as dumbness and deafness on them, but Charlieboy however preferred to talk to the Avengers, the kidnappers, armed robbers and Biafra agi­tators. To the Avengers, he be­lieved that all they were doing were giving problems to the government and urged them to pipe down. Though he con­demned armed robbery and kidnapping, but was quick to say if the perpetrators can’t stop it they should go after those politicians who have been looting the money that belongs to all, instead of going after innocent citizens who have been striving to survive. “Robbery and kidnapping are not good. But should they insist to go about it, let them come so that we plan and go after all the politicians who have been looting our money instead of terrorizing innocent citizens who are striving to survive. Kidnap governors, the ministers and those looters. If you put fears into them, they may even stop from such acts,” he opined.

A 23-year-old church member, Elochukwu Nnoruga, on Wednesday appeared in a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for alleged theft of N214,000 from church tithe box.
Nnoruga no fixed address is facing a one-count charge of theft.
Prosecutor Ben Ekundayo told the court that the accused committed the offence on Aug. 14 at about 2 p.m., at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Idumaigbo, Lagos.
Ekundayo said that the accused, a church member, stole N214, 000 from the tithe box after church service.
He said the offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
Nnoruga pleaded guilty to the charge.
The Magistrate, Mr Ade Adefulire, adjourned the case till Aug. 23 for facts and sentencing.

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Abayomi Olonishakin, on Monday declared that the currently detained Boko Haram members will only be freed by a political decision.
The sect in a new video released at the weekend demanded the release of its members before freeing the abducted Chibok girls.
The terror group also threatened to attack Lagos, Abuja and Borno States to release its detained members in those states.
But speaking with State House correspondents after a security meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Olonishakin noted that such political decision was not within his jurisdiction.
President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo were conspicuously absent at the meeting.
The CDS, however, said the military operation against Boko Haram will continue

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, said moi-moi (grind beans) becomes poisonous when prepared in cellophane (nylon) bags.

The minister made the disclosure at a one-day public hearing on Food Security Bill, organised by the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development in Abuja on Thursday.
According to him, cellophane bags contain a large dosage of dioxins that are harmful to health.
He advised lovers of the delicacy to make use of leaves in the preparation rather than cellophane, adding that leaves do not contain such poisonous substance.
Ogbeh said beans and grains preserved with over dosage of pesticides by farmers and sellers had killed many unsuspecting Nigerians.
He also said the consumption of (pure) water in sachets exposed to sun at over 28 degree Celsius was poisonous and its consumption responsible for many cases of kidney and liver failure among Nigerians.
The minister said poorly boiled meat could cause tuberculosis.
Ogbe said the habit of over-boiling meat in Nigeria had helped to prevent tuberculosis infection from under cooked beef.
“Many of the cows being moved from one place to the other by herdsmen are already infected with tuberculosis.
“But our practice of boiling meat very well here has been the saving grace of people being infected with the deadly disease’’, he said.
The minister further disclosed that smuggled frozen chicken preserved with formalin, a chemical commonly used in the preservation of corpses, posed a serious health challenge.
“The wrong application of fertiliser by farmers has also led to consumption of poisonous foods.
“Unknown to many farmers, there is specific fertiliser for specific crops in specific states in line with soil texture’’, he said.

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, on Thursday told South East governors, political leaders as well as those who claim to be Igbo and non Igbo elder statesmen to emulate Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State for being outspoken and condemning the killing of non violent Biafran agitators.
In a statement signed by IPOB Media and Publicity Officer Mr. Emma Powerful, the group said responsible Nigerians should prevail on President Muhammadu Buhari to do the right thing by releasing its leader and Director of Radio Biafra.
IPOB said “it has high esteem for Governor Fayose, who has shown that he is the only detribalized politician after the late Owelle of Onitsha Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, that is still living and does not play politics with the lives of any citizen of Nigeria.”
“We are telling the people of Ekiti state that they have a son in whom the Biafrans and IPOB and other Biafra agitators are well pleased with, this is not because he condemned the Federal Government of Nigeria for killing IPOB other Biafran and non Biafran agitators, but because he equally condemned the killing by Fulani herdsmen in Agatu in Benue and Nimbo in Enugu States and others.
“He has equally stood tall by single handily and constructively criticizing the All Progressive Congress, APC, government in all their irresponsible and anti Nigeria’s policies when his party members and other Nigerian politicians have been afraid and intimidated not to talk for fear of being arrested for one alleged corrupt act or the other”, he said.

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Audu Ogbeh on Thursday released a census livestock in the country.
Mr. Ogbeh spoke at a news conference in Abuja.
He said the 2011 National Agricultural Sample Survey indicated that Nigeria was endowed with an estimated 19.5 million cattle, 72.5 million goats, 41.3 million sheep, 7.1 million pigs and 28,000 camels.
Accordingly, the minister said the country had 145 million chickens, 11.6 million ducks, 1.2 million turkeys and 974, 499 donkeys.
Mr. Ogbeh said this impressive statistics which had made Nigeria number one in livestock in Africa had not met the national demand of animal protein or contributed to the GDP over the years.
He decried the low milk production in Nigeria as a cow produced one litre of milk a day while a cow in Saudi Arabia or Brazil produced 30 to 40 litres.
“Saudi Arabia produces 4.7 million litres of milk daily while Nigeria imports about 1.3 billion dollar worth of milk annually to make up deficit.
The minister said of all the enterprise in the livestock sector, only the poultry industry had achieved an appreciable level of commercialisation.
Mr. Ogbeh said other industries in the livestock sector were predominantly in the hands of subsistence farmers with pastoralist system of production contributing over 90 per cent of cattle production in the country.
“The way forward in improving our livestock and dairy industry is to intensify efforts on adding value to the industry along the respective livestock value chains.
“In line with our goal of attaining self sufficiency in animal protein, this administration has set out to establish ranches to be planted with high quality improved tropical grass and legume species.
“We shall provide irrigation for all year commercial fodder production to enhance settlement of pastoralist and ensure cattle, sheep and goat improvement through an expanded breeding programme through artificial insemination.
“We shall group dairy farmers in clusters, build their capacity and equip them with milk collection facilities and facilitate single digit loan for them,’’ he said.
The minister said there was a new disease outbreak affecting maize production in some parts of Edo and in the South West of the country.
He gave the name of the disease as “army worm’’, adding that relevant research institutes were working on it and the ministry was monitoring the level of threat it posed.
Mr. Ogbeh urged farmers not to panic, adding that the ministry would take further action if the disease is not controlled within a short time.

Officials of the Youth Vigilantes, popularly known as the Civilian JTF (CJTF), yesterday called on the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to redeem its 2014 pledge of N50million reward to anyone with information that could lead to the rescue of abducted Chibok schoolgirls.
The call was made following the discovery of one of the girls, Amina Ali Nkeki, 19, by members of the group in Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State on Tuesday.
Amina was found with a baby on the outskirts of a Boko Haram stronghold in the Sambisa Forest two years after the 276 schoolgirls were taken away from their dormitories in Government Girls Secondary School Chibok.
A total of 57 girls escaped their captors as they were being ferried to the Sambisa Forest in trucks.
After the abduction, the police announced the mouthwatering sum as reward for any help that could lead to their whereabouts.
In a statement, the then Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Mr Frank Mba, urged “patriotic citizens” to provide “useful information” to the police through some dedicated phone numbers, promising to treat them with “utmost confidentiality.”
According to the statement, “The Nigeria Police hereby announce a cash reward of N50 million to anyone who volunteers credible information that will lead to the location and rescue of the female students abducted from Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State.” “The Force urges all patriotic citizens with useful information to contact the following numbers: 09-2914649 08081777309 08055547536 08032125050 08034617591 08035969731. While calling on the general public to be part of the solution to the present security challenge, the Police High Command also reassures all citizens that any information given would be treated anonymously and with utmost confidentiality,” it added.
The whereabouts of the remaining 219 girls had remained an enigma, until Tuesday’s discovery of Amina alongside her four-month-old daughter.
Based on this, the legal adviser of the CJTF, Barrister Jibrin Gunda, told our correspondent in a telephone interview yesterday, that this is the time for the police authorities to fulfill the pledge in order to set a good precedence.
“We feel we should remind the police that the promise is sacred. There is no denying the fact that it is our gallant operatives, the youth vigilantes, who rescued Amina Ali from the hands of the Boko Haram.
“This feat is worth celebrating because the whole world, including the USA, Britain, France and other allies worked closely with the Nigerian security forces in order to locate the missing girls but to no avail. However, our boys, with just sticks and bows and arrows traced one of them.
“We are, therefore appealing to the Nigeria Police to fulfill its promise and release the N50 million,” he said.
Barrister Gunda, who described the CJTF as “unsung heroes” said they had paid their dues to deserve recognition from the federal government.
“Between 2013 and now, we have lost over 600 of our members to the Boko Haram. They died while confronting the miscreants.
“Many of those that died have wives, children and parents. They need to be supported,” he said.
He also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to consider the CJTF in the federal government’s youth empowerment initiatives.
“I’m of the opinion that without the sacrifice and dedication of our youths, the fight against the Boko Haram would have been something else. It’s our youth that know the train and because of the fact that they were born and brought up around Borno, they easily identify Boko Haram insurgents.
“Similarly, in the course of the fight, they work closely with the Nigerian security forces. However, when it comes to sharing credits for bravery, our boys are more often forgotten,” he said.
Another official of the CJTF, who does not want to be named, said Amina was found after their personnel on stop-and-search duty at Talala checkpoint in Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State, intercepted the father of her baby.
He said a thorough interrogation led to a check on his wife, who was later discovered to be one of the 219 missing Chibok girls.
“The Civilian JTF member, who recognided Amina Ali by just one look at her is from Baalle community. I won’t just tell his name until the promised reward is released,” he said.
However, when contacted over the pledge, the spokesperson of the police, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Olabisi Kolawole, said she was not aware of it.

HAVE you heard of a secondary school in the world where only three teachers are teaching all subjects from junior class to senior class?
Tribune Onlinecan authoritatively reveal that such situation exists at Gbaregolor community in oil-rich Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State.
The name of the school so neglected was given as Gbaregolor Grammar School in Ewu Kingdom.
It was reliably gathered that a principal and only two teachers are now left to teach all subjects from JSS 1 to SSS.
The school, said to be about 15 years old, is said to have been lagging behind in the area of acute shortage of teachers.
Unbelievably, one of the leaders of the community is Honourable Maxwell Urhogu, who is the Deputy Chief Whip, Ughelli South Legislative Arm.
Honorable Urhogu and another leader of the community, Comrade Godbless Ojavwighokia, told journalists on Monday in Warri that the community had pestered the state government with several letters in that regard to no avail.
The duo said only five teachers with the principal had been piloting academic activities of for the past two years.
They added that the five teachers teach students from JSS 1 to SSS 3 all the subjects in the Nigeria secondary school curriculum.
According to them, the worst, however, happened recently when three out of the five teachers were transferred from the Gbaregolor Grammar School to other secondary schools in the state.
The situation, they said, had eventually left only two teachers and the principal to teach all subjects from JSS 1 to SSS 3.
Overwhelmed by the revelation, the two leaders called on Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of the state and the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Chiedu Ebie to post more teachers to the school to enable the students’ measure up with their colleagues in other schools.
It could not be gathered how many students are enrolled in the school as of press time.
Frantic efforts made to reach the Principal of Gbaregolor Grammar School, one Mr. O. E Ukavwe, for comments through his mobile phone, were unsuccessful.

THE Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi (Ojaja II), on Monday unveiled a nursery plant of one million cocoa pots and trees in the farmland of Ile-Ife, describing it the first phase of the targeted 10 million cocoa seedlings aimed at empowering shortlisted 100, 000 youths and widows.
In a statement issued by the monarch's director of media and public affairs, Comrade Moses Olafare, development was borne out of the need to tackle unemployment among Nigerian youths and also to create economic lifeline for widows affected by communal hostilities between Ile-Ife and Modakeke many years back.
According to the statement, which was made available to theTribune Onlinein Osogbo yesterday, "saddened by the unwarranted economically suicidal neglect of cocoa farming, which was once a major foreign earning in Nigeria especially in the Southwest, Oba Ogunwusi, who is the grand patron of the Graduate Farmers Association of Nigeria has imperatively chosen agriculture, cocoa to be specific, which now sells for about $3,000 dollars per tonne as a perfect alternative to the dwindling crude oil now selling below $40 dollars per barrel."
The statement reads in part, "having identified agriculture as a veritable tool for enhancing living standard and wealth creation for the youth, we are leaving no stone unturned in this embarked scheme of the largest cocoa plantation nursery in Nigeria, targeting 10 million trees rolling in one million phases with the youths to get 2000 plants each from the nursery stage."
"If we have stronger partnerships with government for it is a very capital intensive venture, it is not impossible to expand the cocoa plantation nursery to well over 100mllion trees to be spread across the entire country just to bring back cocoa days to this country again.
While disclosing that Oba Ogunwusi agricultural scheme was already attracting collaboration of Osun and Federal Governments, the statement added that "the Minister of Agriculture, Chief Audu Ogbe, had already given a nod of cooperation for our GREENFIELD to enjoy mechanisation to till the land for us to be able to plant the cash crop, the hybrids and the improved seedlings that will bring out 2000kilogramme to be harvested all year round."

The Rivers State Police Command on Tuesday paraded a 26-year-old driver, Jeremiah Igiri, who was alleged to have kidnapped his employer’s 4-year-old son and demanded a ransom of N20 million.
Igiri, said to have been searching for the missing boy with his mother, confessed that he arranged with a lady and two other men to abduct his employer’s son.

He said, “This is my first abduction. I invited a lady and a boy to handle the operation.
“When the little boy returned from school and was riding his bicycle, the people I arranged came in. So, I asked him to open the gate and that was how the lady picked him.

“When my madam came out and was looking for the boy, I also joined her in the search for the boy. The second day I felt bad over what I did as I became troubled seeing my Madam crying and calling the boy’s name.
“Whenever I wanted to reveal the truth, I always saw two men standing in front of my madam with strange faces.
“There was a day my madam and her friend took me in her car and as I was alighting, the friend gave me one thousand naira. I wanted to tell them I was behind the abduction, but a strange face again appeared and I could not say anything.
“I heard that the kidnappers later demanded for N20million ransom. I protested that it was too much. I told the kidnappers to collect one million but they said they will collect N20 million.

“I agreed with the kidnappers that if she paid the N20million that I will use my share to go back to school,” he added.
Though the Madam did not pay the ransom, Igiri said he would have been given N7million as his share of the ransom.
On her part, the mother of the victim, Mrs. Telalo Georgina disclosed that it was at the Police station where her driver was invited that he confessed he was behind the abduction.
“I am a lawyer and a Minister of the gospel. I prayed with my anointing oil before I interrogated him at the station and he confessed to me,” she added.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP Ahmad Muhammad, who paraded the suspect, said the suspect had led the police to the kidnapper’s den and that the boy had since been united with his mother.
“The culprits have been arrested and detained,” the PPRO stated.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday in Katsina urged traditional rulers to spearhead the campaign for peaceful and harmonious co-existence among the diverse socio-political groups in the country. The president made the call when he visited the Emir of Katsina, Alhaji Abdulmumini Kabiru Usman, at his palace in Katsina, Katsina state.
He said the call had become imperative in view of the activities of some groups who had been preaching hatred, disunity and divisive tendencies among Nigerians for their selfish motives. He, therefore, enjoined all Nigerians to always ignore those individuals and groups calling for the break-up of Nigeria.
President Buhari, who narrated the role he played during the civil war in Nigeria, said over two million lives were lost during the war. The president, who expressed concern over the prevailing harsh economic realities across the country, called on the traditional rulers to assist in educating their subjects on the need to be patient and to always exercise restraints while commenting on state of the nation.
He also called on community leaders across the country to introduce monthly or quarterly meeting in their respective communities to address issues concerning their welfare. According to him, such meeting will provide solutions to some challenges facing the people rather than awaiting government intervention to resolve such problems. President Buhari enjoined leaders to always be honest and straightforward while dealing with the people in order to ensure good upbringing of the younger ones in the society.
On the current economic hardship being experienced in the country, the president attributed such hardship to dwindling oil revenue occasioned by the unstable global oil price. He, therefore, called on Nigerians to diversify their means of livelihood by engaging in agricultural activities to alleviate their sufferings.
The president, who reiterated the determination of his administration to recover Nigeria’s stolen funds, reassured that the ongoing war against corruption was not selective but aimed at ensuring financial and economic discipline in the country.
In his remarks, the Emir of Katsina, Alhaji Abdulmumini Kabiru Usman, called on the Federal Government to fulfill its promises of completing the dredging of River Niger as well as the Katsina state water and dam projects to boost irrigation farming in the state. The Emir also called for the federal government’s intervention in reviving teacher training colleges to uplift the quality of education in the country.
He enjoined Nigerians, particularly the elite, to support and show more understanding to the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration by offering special prayers for the success of the government.

A suspected cultist and kidnapper shocked newsmen on Friday when he confessed that he had lost count of the number of persons he had killed before his arrest by men of the Rivers State Police Command.
The suspect identified as Mitchel Tamuno, the leader of a cult group, was apprehended by the police in connection with the alleged kidnap on April 14 of a 14-old-old girl.
The girl (name withheld) was said to have been raped by her captors, including Mitchel before she eventually escaped from them.
Narrating why he was arrested by the police, Mitchel explained that he was only involved in killing of members of rival cult groups and did not shed “innocent blood”.
Mitchel, who insisted that he could no longer remember the number of persons he had killed, stated that he purchased the four AK 47 rifles used for operation by members of his cult group (Icelander) from one Ifeanyi in Aba, Abia State.
He added that the guns were used to kill some members of rival cult group (Greenlanders) so as to avenge the killing of members of his own group.
Mitche, who promised to go back to his fish farming business if freed, said, “I have never shed innocent blood. We only kill people that come to kill us because we know the people we are fighting. The AK 47 rifles that were recovered belong to us as a group. I bought them from one Mr. Ifeanyi in Aba, Abia State. He sold the first two to us at N250,000 each and the second batch of two for N280,000 each.
“We only have four guns in our possession. We use the guns to fight our opponents. Our opponents are the Greenlanders and we fight for supremacy. I have never killed anybody and cut the head. Those who behead do so because they want the other group to feel the pain.
“When you come, you see your friend dead and without a head, you feel the pain. The fight is not on a daily basis. When we get information about them, we go after them and when they (rival cult group) get information about us, they come after us too. I have lost count of how many people I have killed because they all happened on different occasions.”
A member of the gang, who gets information for the kidnap gang, Godwin Pina, denied being a member of any cult group, but only gave information on how to kidnap the 14-year-old girl.
Pina, a 23-year-old labourer, disclosed that the girl that was kidnapped was her neighbour, adding that he became worried when he learnt from the gang members that their victim had escaped.
“They (gang members) called me that the girl had run away. One of my friends, who is at large (Bobo mi) informed me that the girl ran away. I regret my action. Francis, Bobomi and Collins also kidnapped Madam Lizzy.
“I am only involved in the kidnap of the girl, but I did not take part in raping her. Mitchel is our number one man in our group,” Pina added while appealing to the police for forgiveness.
Speaking on the arrested men, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ahmad Muhammad, said Pina was arrested while he went to the bank to withdraw the N50,000 their victim’s father paid into their (kidnappers) account.
Muhammad explained that Pina was able to give the police information that led to the arrest of Mitchel and other gang members, adding that four AK 47 rifles were recovered in the course of investigation.
He pointed out that the command would not relent in its determination to arrest criminals in the state and bring them to book, adding that the command in the month of April arrested 70 suspected kidnappers, cultists and armed robbers.
Muhammad added that 25 suspects were killed during a shootout with policemen while 11 AK 47 rifles and 17 assorted illicit firearms, 480 different calibres of ammunition were recovered from the suspected criminals.
On how Mitchel’s gang’s victim was able to escape, he said the girl escaped with a ladder she sighted within an uncompleted building where she was held hostage, recalling that four of the kidnappers, who raped her, were fast asleep when the victim escaped.
He said, “She (victim) then followed the sound of vehicles she was hearing from the road and got to the main road, saw a man driving a car, waved the car down and told the driver that she escaped from kidnappers’ den.
“She appealed to the driver of the car to help her call her father, who is a pastor in Bayelsa State. The Good Samaritan called the father of the victim and told him the development and the father directed the man to take her daughter to any nearby police station.
“Before then, the kidnappers had already put a call across to the father of their victim, demanding for ransom of N10m. They equally forwarded an account number detail to the victim’s father.
“One of the kidnapers (Godwin Pina) went to the bank immediately he noticed that the sum of N50,000 had been paid into the account for the upkeep of their victim, pending when the ransom demanded would be raised.
When the suspected was arrested, he then opened up that their boss, Mitchel, was staying in Okrika. Then the Anti-kidnapping unit moved to Abam in Okrika and arrested Mitchel and 10 other boys in his house.
“Two AK 47 rifles were recovered from him. On interrogation, he (Mitchel) said he had other two AK 47 rifles with one Iyalla Appolos somewhere in Azubokwe. We moved in there and Iyalla was arrested and the two AK 47 rifles were recovered from him,” Muhammad added.

SaharaReporters has learned that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has located stolen money from accounts of the former National Security Adviser (NSA) Sambo Dasuki to several prominent aides to the former President Goodluck Jonathan.

This news comes just as EFCC agents have raided the home of former top aide to Mr. Jonathan and spokesman of his presidential campaign Femi Fani-Kayode. This is also the latest development in a massive probe of Mr. Dasuki’s fraudulent use of public funds which are now known to have been used to bribe top military officials, rig the Ekiti State gubernatorial elections, and be diverted to accounts belonging to powerful public officials.
EFCC sources speaking to SaharaReporters found that Mr. Jonathan’s former spokesman, Rueben Abati, took N72 million; top-PDP chieftain Uche Secondus took N250 million, and Ahmed Gulak was found to have taken N50 million. Bello Fadile, a security analyst who was used by Jonathan to attempt to stop INEC from releasing the 2015 presidential election results, took N754 million.

A twelve-year-old girl rescued by the military has said she wants to return to her husband in Sambisa Forest. The girl was one of the 65 civilians rescued from the forest earlier this week.
Theater commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Major General Lucky Irahbor, handed over 65 civilians recently rescued to the Borno State government on Friday for further rehabilitation, but one teen demanded that she return to Sambisa Forest to be reunited with her husband.

Speaking to the Borno State government, Mr. Irahbor, who enumerated the recent success of Operation Lafiya Dole, said, “Today I would like to hand over our sisters and children rescued during our operations at Sambisa Forest. We shall continue until we wipe out the insurgents because they are losing more ground in Sambisa Forest to our troops.”
Governor Kashim Shettima praised the military for their efforts and promised that his administration would continue to support the military.
"We are experiencing peace now because of the tireless efforts of our military, especially the crackdown on Sambisa Forest. For the newly rescued, I congratulate you all. We are going to take care of you and reunite you with your families.”
But the rescued twelve-year-old wept and refused to eat or drink water for the past three days, as she demanded to be reunited with her husband in Sambisa Forest.
When journalists asked the teen why she refused to eat or drink, she simply answered, "All I want is to go back to him at Sambisa again," and wept.

President Muhammadu Buhari says his administration has prioritised the repair and construction of roads within the country, unlike his predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan, who earmarked very little for infrastructure.
Mr. Buhari said this in a speech Friday before signing the 2016 budget into law.
“To illustrate our renewed commitment to infrastructural development, the 2016 budget allocates over N200 billion to road construction as against a paltry N18 billion allocated for same purpose in the 2015 budget,” President Buhari said.
The president said his administration earmarked N350 billion for capital construction projects, with the hope that figure ill help stimulate the country’s ailing economy.
“The signing of the budget today will trigger concerted efforts to reflate the Nigerian economy, a key element of which is an immediate injection of N350bn into the economy by way of capital projects,” he said.
The 2016 budget was signed Friday afternoon after months of bickering by the executive and the National Assembly over figures and projects proposed in the document.
At the event, Mr. Buhari thanked all those who worked to make the budget a reality, including leaders of the National Assembly.
“It gives me great pleasure today to sign the first full-year budget of this administration into law. I thank the leadership of the National Assembly, in particular, the Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and indeed all members of the National Assembly for their cooperation in making this a reality,” Mr. Buhari said.

The president pledged a smoother process for the 2017 budget cycle.
“The budget is intended to signpost a renewal of our commitment to restoring the budget as a serious article of faith with the Nigerian people. This Administration is committed to ensuring that henceforth the annual appropriation bill is presented to the National Assembly in time for the passage of the Act before the beginning of the fiscal year.”
Mr. Buhari said details of the budget will be made available by the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Udo Udoma.
“Through the 2016 budget, aptly titled “Budget of Change’’, the government seeks to fulfil its own side of the social contract. The Budget I have signed into law provides for aggregate expenditures of N6.06trn. Further details of the approved budget, as well as our Strategic Implementation Plan for the 2016 budget, will be provided by the Honourable Minister of Budget and National Planning.
“I shall be speaking in more details about the Budget, its implementation and the over-all national economic and social policies of the Government in my address on May 29th, God willing,” Mr. Buhari said.
Mr. Buhari said his administration exercised prudence in signing the budget because of falling crude oil prices.
“In designing the 2016 budget, we made a deliberate choice to pursue an expansionary fiscal policy despite the huge decline in government revenues from crude oil exports. This is why we decided to enlarge the budget deficit at this time, to be financed principally through foreign and domestic borrowings. All borrowings will, however, be applied towards growth-enhancing capital expenditures.
“Despite the current difficulties, we will work extra-hard to achieve our revenue projections. Our revenue generating agencies are coming under better management and are being re-oriented. The implementation of the Treasury Single Account (TSA) is expected to contribute significantly to improving transparency over government revenues.

Senate minority leader, Godswill Akpabio, has debunked reports he is eyeing the presidency come 2019.
According to him, since the PDP has zoned the slot to the North it would be impracticable for the south to take a shot.
In a statement by his spokesman, Anietie Ekong, Akpabio said the South-South has had its shot at the Presidency through Dr Goodluck Jonathan, who handed over to President Muhammadu Buhari barely one year ago, so it is politically impracticable in the present Nigeria to expect another South-South man to aspire to succeed President Buhari.
Akpabio who described the reports as the work of mischief makers said he is presently concerned with working with other law makers to enact legislation that will improve the lives and living standard of Nigerians.

The attention of the Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio has been drawn to publications in the social media about his purported posters campaigning for the Presidency in 2019.
We wish to state categorically that Senator Akpabio has no ambition of contesting for the Presidency in 2019 and is not behind such campaigns. It is the handiwork of mischief makers.
It is instructive that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which he belongs to has zoned the Presidency to the North by 2019. The South-South has had its shot at the Presidency through Dr Goodluck Jonathan who handed over to President Muhammadu Buhari barely one year ago. And it is politically impracticable in the present Nigeria to expect another South-South man to aspire to succeed President Buhari.
We implore well meaning Nigerians to ignore these publications as they do not emanate from nor have the blessing of Senator Akpabio. The mischief-makers should desist from actions that tend to heat the polity.
Senator Akpabio as the Senate Minority Leader is presently concerned with working with other law makers to enact legislation that will improve the lives and living standard of Nigerians. He should not be distracted by a phantom campaign as such ambition only exist in the imagination of the mischief-makers.
