Politics / The Shape Of The New Biafra By Chilee Agunanna by cathytemi(f): 5:20pm On May 29, 2017
At the risk of sounding vulgar, I wish to apply this Igbo proverb here: “Kinsmen are like the hairs around the anus, they can neither be shaved or pulled.” The Igbos fighting for Biafra are like those hairs, they are going about it the wrong way for now and dying unnecessarily, but they are our kinsmen and we cannot disown them, rather we can tell them not to die in vain like they are doing, because they are not doing anyone any good.

At the right time and in due course, their style of the struggle will be needed but it is not at this moment. We also say in Igboland that, “In a wealthy man’s house, all kinds of characters abound—the strong, the weak, the loud, the meek, the violent and the peaceful, the honest and the thieves….” So whichever way you want to fight for Biafra, your skills will be needed, it’s just for you to await the right time and place.

At the moment, if you want to use violence in the struggle, follow the example of Apostle Johnson Suleiman, preach it, shout it, threaten it, but never go outside in the name of any demonstration because you will only be canon fodder for trigger happy soldiers and policemen ordered to kill you and no matter how unfair, unjust and unlawful your death is, you can never resurrect. You do not have two lives where you can use one to fight and die for the struggle and use the other to live and enjoy Biafra when it comes. You only have one and we need you to be alive whenever Biafra is achieved.

There is always a time to defend and attack and now is the time for defence. Let us first defend ourselves from the Fulani Herdsmen rampaging about and killing our people instead of wasting our lives in demonstrations shouting for Biafra. It is better to die while defending yourself than to place yourself in the path of unnecessary danger through demonstrations.

You should even worry about the quality of the people that kill you. A comedian once joked that he would prefer to be jammed by someone driving a Hummer Jeep than one driving a Keke. It is people you have labeled animals that are killing you and you are answering a messiah or sacrifice. Messiah for who? Sacrifice for what? What do you gain from that?

Biafra does not need that type of sacrifice at the moment; if you have to die, you have to die honourably and your death has to count towards something and statistics have to at least capture you. These days we hardly know the correct figure of people that are killed, the numbers are usually disputed and coupled with that the soldiers and police usually deny killing anyone, so why die when no one will admit to killing you and your number won’t even be reflected in the data?

We need everyone alive for the struggle. If you see they are shooting people, run away because he who fights and runs away, lives to fight another day. Don’t die struggle now, we need people to live for the struggle. That is the current situation.

The way to the new Biafra is through self and nation building. Develop yourself and get ready to play a part, develop your land and your people, train them, help them and give them good governance if you are in a position of power.

In fact we already have Biafra but we do not realize it; we do not cherish it; we betray it; we steal from it; we cheat on it; we kill it.

The East is already Biafra but we do not nurture it because of the selfish and stealing leaders we have in Igboland. How can we realize Biafra when a governor uses the people’s money to erect Christmas Trees while slashing the salaries of workers and pensioners and still not paying them the rest? How can we realize Biafra when a governor has turned the state government to his own family’s business and we do nothing about it? How can we realize Biafra when a governor instead of paying his people decides to deceive them with a fake and non-existent airline?

Or do we talk about Biafra in Enugu State, the original capital of Biafra where Ugwuanyi ran to Abuja to laugh and pose for pictures with Buhari when his people had been massacred? How can we have Biafra when after the massacre, Ugwuanyi welcomes the Sultan of Sokoto with fanfare and praise instead of expressing anger and threatening retaliation for the death of his people just like El Rufai threatened that the Fulanis would in this 2012 tweet: “We write this for all to read. Anyone, soldier or not that kills the Fulani takes a loan repayable one day no matter how long it takes.”

Where is this where instead of patronizing Innoson Motors who is right there with us, they are still buying Toyota and BMW cars? Where is this Biafra my people?

We cannot have Biafra until we develop Igboland and make it Biafra. Nothing is holding us from making sure the leaders of Igboland lead honestly and accountably.

What we need to do now is to strategize and elect humane leaders for Igboland who can develop our land; people who will not eat our collective share of the “National Cake” alone, only then we can take a step forward and say we are Biafra before demanding for Biafra from anybody we accuse of holding it.

Note: While writing this article, I also saw one by the Areafada, Charly Boy, titled: “Let us pause on the fantasy tagged Biafra for now” which expressed most of the same sentiments in my piece in a better way.

A recent update to this piece reads thus;

I have said this before, I am Biafran. I support the concept of Biafra. But the way some of my Igbo brothers are going about it is alarming. Once anyone raises any idea contrary to theirs about how things should be done, they will curse him to death and threaten to kill him.

This is not the way of Biafra. The war for Biafra has been fought a long time ago and we are past that now. All we need is to develop our lands and our people; to elevate the areas that represented Biafra during the period of that war and that is Biafra.

We cannot come and say Nigeria should let us go when no one is holding us. When we cannot even receive honesty and good governance from the people governing us in the states of Biafra, how can we claim someone is holding us?

Nnamdi Kanu preaches hatred and death and I can say this and repeat it, we can never get Biafra through his message or leadership. Anyone can claim him as a leader but he is not the leader of the Igbos. Many of you can come here and curse and say whatever you want, but we are all part of this and no one owns the land more than the other.

He is leading a lot of young men and women to their early graves. So many people have already died abominable deaths by listening to him. Do you people think that his hatred will go away if we get Biafra? No, he will simply redirect it to other Igbos and command peope to worship him.

All I see happening is people preparing themselves and giving Buhari and his soldiers another reason to shoot them like they shot others and nothing has happened.
If you want Biafra, go and develop yourself, develop your community, demand good governance from your rulers, be peaceful and get ready to take Biafra!

Education / Tough Times Don’t Last! Harvard Graduate Shares His Inspiring Story by cathytemi(f): 5:37pm On May 28, 2017
Harvard Graduate Shannon Satonori Lytle shares his story of determination and perseverance on Facebook yesterday, his story might just inspire someone and spur them not to lose hope. Read below.

In high school, I flipped burgers at McDonald’s so I could afford the privilege of taking the SAT. I fed and cared for my three baby siblings until they went to sleep and stayed up until 4am to do my homework. I walked home through a dangerous part of the city after extracurriculars because I couldn’t afford a car.

I stuck my laptop out of my window at night to steal my neighbor’s wifi and finish my schoolwork. I was scoffed at and told, “from this part of Ohio, only the children of doctors and lawyers get to go to Ivy League Schools.”

In college, I panicked when my laptop broke because I had worked 150 minimum wage hours to buy it. I scrubbed toilets, shelved books, and sold clothing so I could chase my dreams and travel the world. Throughout my life, I have maneuvered and begged for every kind of subsidy and coupon. I’m the son of a warehouse worker and an immigrant; a first generation student. Today, I graduated from Harvard.

Music/Radio / New Music: Ruggedman – Is Police Your Friend? by cathytemi(f): 4:32pm On May 27, 2017
Ruggedman comes out with a new song and it is a super conscious track talking about the actions of some Nigerian police officers on youths of today that he sees as wrong.

It seems some police officers assume every young man is a fraudster or cyber thief (Yahoo boy) or every young lady is a prostitute and some officers see it as normal to go outside the law by searching people’s private properties without a warrant or probable cause and even going as far as causing physical bodily harm.

It is definately a social awareness song to educate the people and the police alike on how to treat each other.

The beautiful part of the song is how Ruggedman adds the voice/words of the super efficient Lagos State Police PRO “Supol Dolapo Opeyemi Badmus”. Taken from a video in which she is seen and heard stating certain dos and donts on police actions.

The song also contains samples from “American Faaji” by The Paramount King of Fuji Abass Akande Obesere.

The track is produced by Seanz Beat

Mixed and mastered by Marqai

Today is Precious Chikwendu aka Snowhite, Femi Fani-Fakayode’s wife and he took to Instagram to pen a beautiful birthday poem for the beautiful lady and mother of his son who he fondly calls Mama Aragorn. Read below;

SNOWHITE: A BIRTHDAY POEM FOR MAMA ARAGORN

From the hills of Ohafia and the valleys of Abriba comes you that makes me smile.
From the forests of Umahia and the lush green fields of Nanka comes you that brings me joy.

From the eastern shores of our nation where stars shine brightly and from where come men whose spirits cannot be broken comes you that gives me hope.

From the lineage of those who dare to believe and from the stock of those who soar like eagles comes you that creates new beginnings.

God brought you my way and has given me a new lease of life. What a gift you are- not just to me but also to humanity. Your star shall shine from generation to generation.

Your strength and confidence shall speak for you all the days of your life. Your talents shall open every door that you seek to enter.
Your beauty: every radiant and everlasting, shall shake the very foundations of humanity and melt even the hardest of hearts.
You are Snowhite and you shall remain as white as snow from beginning to end.

Your sun shall never set and God’s light, not darkness, shall follow you all the days of your life.
You are not just the Queen of Pageants but the Queen of the Ages.
From generation to generation humanity shall testify of your kindness, your love and your good works. That is your destiny and that is your portion.

Let not the storms of life ever cause you to give up or forget it. With you there is hope: you are Snowhite, the one that makes me smile and brings me joy.

Happy birthday!

Nairaland / General / 5 Tips For Choosing A Catchy Hashtag For Your Social Media Campaign by cathytemi(f): 1:34am On May 25, 2017
Hashtags are very important because it makes it easier to find information about a particular theme, campaign or content. It can also be used to get the attention of your audience especially if it is catchy. So if you are doing a social media campaign and thinking of choosing a Hashtag, you are in luck as Jumia Travel, the leading online travel agency discusses tips for selecting one. #Enjoy

Keep it as short as possible

This is very difficult but you don’t need a lengthy hashtag for your campaign. A very good idea is to use the same amount of characters for your Twitter handle which is 9 for your hashtag. If you can’t do this, just ensure it is not too long. An example is #JumiaHospitalityReport.

Ensure that it’s unique

Using a hashtag someone else has used will only make it hard for you to sort the information related to your campaign. So, do a bit of research to confirm if it has been used or not.

Make your hashtag relevant

If your social media campaign is focused on football, you don’t select a hashtag that is completely dissimilar. There must be a correlation. The hashtag should be able to showcase your brand.

Make it conversational

It’s good to make your hashtag conversational. Doing this will make it easier for the hashtag to fit into any sentences or engagements.

Use limited numbers of hashtags

For any social media campaign, you should use a limited number of hashtags. Two or three is enough. When it gets to five or six, it will minimise the chances of your campaign of going viral.

Nairaland / General / 5 Annoying Things People Do With Their Phone In Danfo Buses by cathytemi(f): 10:27pm On May 18, 2017
All sort of things happens in danfo buses (Lagos commercial buses). Some will simply make you laugh while others can be so annoying.

One of the ultimate annoying ones is what some people do with their phones in these buses. Well, Jumia Travel, the leading online travel agency identifies these things.

Playing music

Someone will just enter into a bus and start playing music with their phones. The music will be so loud that everyone in the bus will hear. Please, who told you that they need a Disc Jockey in the bus? In other cases, it may not be music. It could be a religious preaching.

Taking selfies

This is a real confirm selfie addict. They take out their phone and click, they are snapping. They are not even bothered if they are taking the pictures of fellow commuters.

Showing off their chats

For those who are curious, you can read the chat of the person beside you. That is if she is chatting on Whatsapp, BBM or messenger. Everything is laid bear. Certain individuals are not conscious of what they do with their phones in public buses.

Talking at the top of their voice

Oh my God! You must have heard someone shouting at the top of his or her voice because he/she is talking on the phone. Why can you just speak like a gentleman or lady? Keep your conversation to yourself!

Plugging your ears

There is nothing wrong with plugging your ears in commercial buses. However, when you have change or something you do with the conductor, you should at least leave one of your ears unplugged. It can be annoying if you do not respond when someone is speaking with you in a Lagos Danfo.

Nairaland / General / Should Lagos State Replace Danfos With 5000 New Buses? by cathytemi(f): 4:46pm On May 15, 2017
Earlier this year the Lagos State Government announced that they want to replace danfos with 5000 brand new buses.

Do you think this is a good idea?

BattaBox sent Warri Pikin out to find out from Nigerians if they are happy with the Lagos State Government’s proposal.

Here are some of their interesting points…

“They have reasons why they want commot danfo…If the new buses no go get issues like one chance, the issues plenty, those drivers they no dey respect traffic rule at all,” one man explains why they should replace danfos with new buses.

“It will create more employment opportunities.”

“…5000 buses can’t contain Lagos as a whole…it is not right for him to make that decision to remove danfo from Lagos State.”

“Some of these danfos…nah death trap.”
