Celebrities / Actress Michelle Dede Assaulted By Police In Lagos by cathytemi(f): 2:43pm On Apr 15, 2018
At about 6am this morning. I was stopped by policemen at the checkpoint on Adewunmi Adepimpe Drive, Lekki Phase 1. Coming from a prayer vigil. I and the female Taxify driver where harassed by officers and one of them eventually grabbed and pushed me violently.

Had I not been standing in front of another officer, whom I fell onto, I would have been pushed to the ground.

They called us prostitutes, including hurling other insults and had I not called one of the attendees of the vigil, I’m sure worse would have happened. The officers walked away only when they heard a male voice on the speaker of my phone.

Aggressive behaviour by armed policemen is unacceptable, especially when no one has threatened or physically touched the policeman!

In Nigeria many people have horror stories of police brutality and only rarely is something done about it.

If policemen want to check a car, do so, don’t pretend you want to check a car, when the only thing you are interested in is my wallet. I have previously been asked by policemen at the same check point to empty the contents of my bag and wallet onto the boot of the car. I did so so quietly, even as they searched through my belongings and counted the money spread on the boot!

Hi everyone,

I will appreciate your candid advice. Thank you.
Celebrities / Funke Kuti Suffers Severe Asthma Attack by cathytemi(f): 4:16pm On Aug 25, 2017
Laila SMD On Her Traumatic Experience In A Hospital As Daughter, Funke Kuti Suffers Severe Asthma Attack

Life coach and social activist, Laila St. Matthew-Daniel has told of her terrifying experience today as her first daughter, Funke Kuti suffered an “overwhelming” asthma attack today.

Funke, Afrobeat king, Femi Kuti’s ex-wife, was rushed to and hospital, Healing Stripes today after suffering breathing difficulties and despite the severity of his condition, the hospital staff were totally ‘clueless’ and she had to be rushed to another hospital, she narrated.

Read her post below;

Traumatic Medical drama for me today! Some hospitals are death traps!

My oldest daughter Funke had a terrible asthma attack this morning. She was rushed to the Healing Stripes Hospital in front of Four Points. By this time her sister Oyinda had got there whilst I was on my way. Then I got another call that they were in an Ambulance on way to St. Nicholas. Why?

It turned out that the Doctor and ‘nurses’ at Healing Stripes were clueless on how to handle the case and were running round in circles! Before they could even operate their oxygen, my daughter was going into spasms – at this panic point Oyinda shouted that they should get an oxygen ambulance to take her to St. Nicholas – the Dr, obviously relieved, agreed and arranged one.

When they got here the nurse that accompanied her couldn’t answer any questions. They didn’t even call ahead that an emergency patient was on the way – Imagine!!!! But the SNH crew began Treatment instantaneously once Oyinda told them it was an asthma attack cos Funke was at danger point as of then – that was when I arrived!

I must commend the medical professionalism of the Doctor and nurSt. Nicholas Hospital Lagosl Lagos – and the way they took control was amazing. Equipments, on point!!! She had to go through series of tests and though she had another relapse, she stabilized and is under admission overnight to observe her.

Health / Nigerian, Tayo Fatunmbi Arikawe Wins The Best Of The Best Pharmacist Award In UK by cathytemi(f): 3:49pm On Jul 13, 2017
Nigerian-born Pharmacist, Olutayo Fatunmbi Arikawe has won the Best of the Best Pharmacists in UK award at the C & D Awards.  The 13 winners were announced at an awards ceremony at the five-star Celtic Manor resort in Wales.

The elated winner took to twitter;

Thanks everyone for your vote, love and support. 'The best of the best' Pharmacist. I am honoured. #cdaward

— LTCoaching&Consultng (@OlutayoArikawe) July 13, 2017

According to the award organizers,

The pharmacy Mrs Arikawe manages organised an impressive array of events to promote healthy living to its local community, including hosting fitness sessions and pole dancing classes on the premises, as well as an annual health funfair.

The Priory also ran a chlamydia service, alongside outreach work with local colleges to offer workshops on sexual health to young people.

When it comes to services, smoking cessation was a priority, with lots of messaging to prompt customers to ask questions about the scheme. Ms Arikawe took every opportunity to “have the conversation” when a customer came in with a cough, and revealed they had a 100-cigarette-a-day habit. “Developing a rapport, reassuring her that we could support her to give up – and empowering her to do it – all helped," Ms Arikawe told C+D last year. "As pharmacists, we’re not here to be judgmental, we’re just here for support.”

As a teaching and training pharmacy, it also accommodates weekly team development meetings to ensure everyone has the chance to reach their potential. No surprise that Ms Arikawe also received the C+D Award for Pharmacy Manager of the Year 2016.

Health / Beibei Haven Foundation Support Couples With Infertility Challenges by cathytemi(f): 9:07pm On Jun 06, 2017
Beibei Haven Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation which provides support for women and couples who are experiencing infertility challenges is back with another edition of its annual dinner reception and fundraiser ball. This year’s edition tagged “The Pink and Blue Ball” is scheduled to take place on Saturday, 10th June 2017 at the Civic Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The event will have guests come together to enjoy an evening of entertainment including a 3-course meal, complimentary drinks and music by A-list Djs and entertainers.

The aim of the ball is to help raise funds for Beibei Haven Foundation to continue to offer free grants to women and couples who are having challenges such as Infertility, Pregnancy/baby loss and Genotype challenges with focus on low income earners. All proceeds will go directly to helping these couples who need medical assistance.

Mrs. Tade Alalade, Founder of Beibei Haven Foundation struggled with trying to conceive in the early years of her marriage. She lived in fear of being judged by what she was going through and was unable to find adequate support to help her through.

In addition to her fertility challenges, financial difficulties also played a major role as she could not afford the necessary treatments and had to resort to getting a loan which led her to work constantly for the first 2 years of her marriage to pay for fertility treatments.

It is based on her experience that she decided to establish the Beibei Haven Foundation to support other women and couples who are struggling to conceive by giving them the assurance that they are not alone in their fertility journey and all hope is not lost.

Jobs/Vacancies / Top 5 Financial Mistakes To Avoid When You Get A Salary Raise by cathytemi(f): 10:23am On May 30, 2017
Congratulations, you just got a salary raise. You are excited because your paycheck will soon arrive. As a result, you may get carried away by your well-paying job. This clearly stated, it’s easier than you think to make some financial mistakes when you anticipate a juicy pay package. So, if you just got a salary raise, Jumia Travel, the leading online travel agency discusses the financial mistakes you should avoid. Please take note!

Making a big purchase

Do not rush to make any big purchase immediately you get a salary raise. You should wait for several months before spending big. Also, you need to evaluate the cost effect of whatever you are spending on your income and lifestyle. You don't want to be broke because of this. The rule of thumb is that the more you earn, the less you should spend.

Buying on credit

Due to the fact that you are expecting a huge paycheck, you buy things on credit at a Lagos store. You should make do with what you have so that you won't spend your whole salary on settling debts.

Not revising your budget

A budget is very essential in tracking your spending. And since earn more, you should try as much as possible to revise your budget. It will help you track the new things you want to spend money and also help you determine if it's worth it.

Telling people about your new paycheck

It's good news that you got a raise. There's the tendency that you want to tell everyone. But wait for a second, informing people about your new pay may not be a good idea because some people will take advantage of this to loan money from you. So, keep it to yourself.

Not saving

Whether you earn a huge income or not, you should always save. However, it is more important when you get a raise because there is every likelihood that you will increase your expenses because of the more money you are earning.

Politics / The Shape Of The New Biafra By Chilee Agunanna by cathytemi(f): 5:20pm On May 29, 2017
At the risk of sounding vulgar, I wish to apply this Igbo proverb here: “Kinsmen are like the hairs around the anus, they can neither be shaved or pulled.” The Igbos fighting for Biafra are like those hairs, they are going about it the wrong way for now and dying unnecessarily, but they are our kinsmen and we cannot disown them, rather we can tell them not to die in vain like they are doing, because they are not doing anyone any good.

At the right time and in due course, their style of the struggle will be needed but it is not at this moment. We also say in Igboland that, “In a wealthy man’s house, all kinds of characters abound—the strong, the weak, the loud, the meek, the violent and the peaceful, the honest and the thieves….” So whichever way you want to fight for Biafra, your skills will be needed, it’s just for you to await the right time and place.

At the moment, if you want to use violence in the struggle, follow the example of Apostle Johnson Suleiman, preach it, shout it, threaten it, but never go outside in the name of any demonstration because you will only be canon fodder for trigger happy soldiers and policemen ordered to kill you and no matter how unfair, unjust and unlawful your death is, you can never resurrect. You do not have two lives where you can use one to fight and die for the struggle and use the other to live and enjoy Biafra when it comes. You only have one and we need you to be alive whenever Biafra is achieved.

There is always a time to defend and attack and now is the time for defence. Let us first defend ourselves from the Fulani Herdsmen rampaging about and killing our people instead of wasting our lives in demonstrations shouting for Biafra. It is better to die while defending yourself than to place yourself in the path of unnecessary danger through demonstrations.

You should even worry about the quality of the people that kill you. A comedian once joked that he would prefer to be jammed by someone driving a Hummer Jeep than one driving a Keke. It is people you have labeled animals that are killing you and you are answering a messiah or sacrifice. Messiah for who? Sacrifice for what? What do you gain from that?

Biafra does not need that type of sacrifice at the moment; if you have to die, you have to die honourably and your death has to count towards something and statistics have to at least capture you. These days we hardly know the correct figure of people that are killed, the numbers are usually disputed and coupled with that the soldiers and police usually deny killing anyone, so why die when no one will admit to killing you and your number won’t even be reflected in the data?

We need everyone alive for the struggle. If you see they are shooting people, run away because he who fights and runs away, lives to fight another day. Don’t die struggle now, we need people to live for the struggle. That is the current situation.

The way to the new Biafra is through self and nation building. Develop yourself and get ready to play a part, develop your land and your people, train them, help them and give them good governance if you are in a position of power.

In fact we already have Biafra but we do not realize it; we do not cherish it; we betray it; we steal from it; we cheat on it; we kill it.

The East is already Biafra but we do not nurture it because of the selfish and stealing leaders we have in Igboland. How can we realize Biafra when a governor uses the people’s money to erect Christmas Trees while slashing the salaries of workers and pensioners and still not paying them the rest? How can we realize Biafra when a governor has turned the state government to his own family’s business and we do nothing about it? How can we realize Biafra when a governor instead of paying his people decides to deceive them with a fake and non-existent airline?

Or do we talk about Biafra in Enugu State, the original capital of Biafra where Ugwuanyi ran to Abuja to laugh and pose for pictures with Buhari when his people had been massacred? How can we have Biafra when after the massacre, Ugwuanyi welcomes the Sultan of Sokoto with fanfare and praise instead of expressing anger and threatening retaliation for the death of his people just like El Rufai threatened that the Fulanis would in this 2012 tweet: “We write this for all to read. Anyone, soldier or not that kills the Fulani takes a loan repayable one day no matter how long it takes.”

Where is this where instead of patronizing Innoson Motors who is right there with us, they are still buying Toyota and BMW cars? Where is this Biafra my people?

We cannot have Biafra until we develop Igboland and make it Biafra. Nothing is holding us from making sure the leaders of Igboland lead honestly and accountably.

What we need to do now is to strategize and elect humane leaders for Igboland who can develop our land; people who will not eat our collective share of the “National Cake” alone, only then we can take a step forward and say we are Biafra before demanding for Biafra from anybody we accuse of holding it.

Note: While writing this article, I also saw one by the Areafada, Charly Boy, titled: “Let us pause on the fantasy tagged Biafra for now” which expressed most of the same sentiments in my piece in a better way.

A recent update to this piece reads thus;

I have said this before, I am Biafran. I support the concept of Biafra. But the way some of my Igbo brothers are going about it is alarming. Once anyone raises any idea contrary to theirs about how things should be done, they will curse him to death and threaten to kill him.

This is not the way of Biafra. The war for Biafra has been fought a long time ago and we are past that now. All we need is to develop our lands and our people; to elevate the areas that represented Biafra during the period of that war and that is Biafra.

We cannot come and say Nigeria should let us go when no one is holding us. When we cannot even receive honesty and good governance from the people governing us in the states of Biafra, how can we claim someone is holding us?

Nnamdi Kanu preaches hatred and death and I can say this and repeat it, we can never get Biafra through his message or leadership. Anyone can claim him as a leader but he is not the leader of the Igbos. Many of you can come here and curse and say whatever you want, but we are all part of this and no one owns the land more than the other.

He is leading a lot of young men and women to their early graves. So many people have already died abominable deaths by listening to him. Do you people think that his hatred will go away if we get Biafra? No, he will simply redirect it to other Igbos and command peope to worship him.

All I see happening is people preparing themselves and giving Buhari and his soldiers another reason to shoot them like they shot others and nothing has happened.
If you want Biafra, go and develop yourself, develop your community, demand good governance from your rulers, be peaceful and get ready to take Biafra!

In high school, I flipped burgers at McDonald’s so I could afford the privilege of taking the SAT. I fed and cared for my three baby siblings until they went to sleep and stayed up until 4am to do my homework. I walked home through a dangerous part of the city after extracurriculars because I couldn’t afford a car.

I stuck my laptop out of my window at night to steal my neighbor’s wifi and finish my schoolwork. I was scoffed at and told, “from this part of Ohio, only the children of doctors and lawyers get to go to Ivy League Schools.”

In college, I panicked when my laptop broke because I had worked 150 minimum wage hours to buy it. I scrubbed toilets, shelved books, and sold clothing so I could chase my dreams and travel the world. Throughout my life, I have maneuvered and begged for every kind of subsidy and coupon. I’m the son of a warehouse worker and an immigrant; a first generation student. Today, I graduated from Harvard.

Music/Radio / New Music: Ruggedman – Is Police Your Friend? by cathytemi(f): 4:32pm On May 27, 2017
Ruggedman comes out with a new song and it is a super conscious track talking about the actions of some Nigerian police officers on youths of today that he sees as wrong.

It seems some police officers assume every young man is a fraudster or cyber thief (Yahoo boy) or every young lady is a prostitute and some officers see it as normal to go outside the law by searching people’s private properties without a warrant or probable cause and even going as far as causing physical bodily harm.

It is definately a social awareness song to educate the people and the police alike on how to treat each other.

The beautiful part of the song is how Ruggedman adds the voice/words of the super efficient Lagos State Police PRO “Supol Dolapo Opeyemi Badmus”. Taken from a video in which she is seen and heard stating certain dos and donts on police actions.

The song also contains samples from “American Faaji” by The Paramount King of Fuji Abass Akande Obesere.

The track is produced by Seanz Beat

Mixed and mastered by Marqai
