NNPC Is the major importer, and imports fuel above N1000 and sells it between N580-750...AND the resulting shortfall is paid for by the government.

The problem is, a private importer, can't compete with NNPC's subsidised fuel under current conditions.

If you were importing fuel as a private importer, your selling price would be above N1200. Meanwhile, NNPC Is selling directly to marketers at a low price below N700. How would you compete?

That is how subsidy damages economies . It prevents competition.




And it could have made far more than that if there was no subsidy.

Let's assume that subsidy was removed without floating the naira the cost wouldn't have been this high. Then after making sure our refineries work, float the currency.. Wouldn't it have been a better approach?

Both PO and Atiku acknowledged that they would have also removed subsidy which Tinubu has done as well, as matter of fact the subsidy has not been 100% removed. The FG is stilk paying about 40-50% in subsidy to shield the hardship from Nigerians.
Anyways i didn't vote for Tinubu but I'm just so curious about what PO or Atiku would have done differently

The problem is he didn't give A $hit about the consequent inflation caused by his policies. The inflation of food prices is dystopian. He had to wait till people protested to even plan to think of what to do about it.
