A poem by Douglas Malloch: If you can't be a pine on the top of the hill. Be a scrub in the valley-but be The best little scrub by the side of the rill; Be a bush, if you can't be a tree. If you can't be a bush, be a bit of the grass. And some highway happier make; If you can't be a muskie, then just be a bass- But the liveliest bass in the lake! We can't all be captains, we've got to be crew. There's something for all of us here. There's big work to do and there's lesser to do And the task we must do is the near. If you can't be a highway, then just be a trail, If you can't be the sun, be a star; It isn't by the size that you win or you fail- Be the best of whatever you are! damzy88: Well said.As much as I am an advocate of entrepreneurship, I still believe some people will still have to be the CEO of First bank, Shell etc.
The most important thing is to do what you love and have multiple sources of income.
Variety is the spice of life.
Lovely piece. |

Congrats. I attended the iteach cohort 5.wasnt selected. Your story is inspiring. Pls I would like to contact u... Freestyllar@yahoo.com ollamy22: I give thanks to Allah for giving me the strength and courage to believe in my self, to make employers perceive me as the right candidate right from CV screening to the point of interview. Nothing feels good to be a self made devoid of any underhand influence other than your ability and God's blessings.
This is a brief story about me. Immediately i finished NYSC, i was so determined never to sit at home doing nothing. I looked around my environment to secure a job with a cement trading company that paid me a salary of 10k. Soon, I joined Corona Schools Trust Council as a Graduate Teacher Trainee with the hope of being absorbed into their main teaching staff later on because i enjoyed teaching during NYSC.
Unfortunately, Corona Schools changed the goal post in the middle of the game. we were told that the programme is a corporate social responsibility and we wont be absorbed because there was no vacancy. mind u, we were paid 35k + feeding monthly. four months wasted for young, bright and brilliant graduates. After some weeks, i secured another job with an Audit Firm to learn practical accounting. Anybody who has worked with a small audit firm knows what it takes to be a man. Truly, i loved the job but left in frustration after 13 months on a salary scale of between 20-28k per month from Idimu - Maryland, Lagos. If no one praises me, i praise myself. The merry go round continues, got another job with a company that pays 50k. i enjoyed a little relief after NYSC. Spent 3 months and got offer with a capital market operator, my brother, the job no be beans, wake up 4am and return home around 10pm everyday coupled with transportation gulping more than 30% of my net pay. That really fueled my desire to move again. i started applying voraciously to many job vacancies, related and unrelated skill sets. And finally, the 3 offers landed with a keen decision to be made.
Please be mindful that as a young person, i never set out to be jumping around jobs because of money. but when you find yourself in a let down situation, fight it. set standard for yourself and go for it. every employer wants the best and to continue to make more profit which is normal. however, no employer will pity u when it decides to sack you because you u are deemed to work below expectation.
Also note that for every place where i worked, my integrity and appetite for success always remain intact. it hurts me when i resign my appointments and observe that my employers still want me but hey, i can only hustle while i am still young. let us be sincere, how can i cope with 28k per month in Lagos, considering the distance for a guy who is around 30? when will i rent an apartment, when will i marry?
Ingredients for Success: Set your standard Believe in your ability Be persistent Never get discouraged Be courageous Sometimes controversial Elements of greed Never be docile Be a risk taker you can also add other qualities
thank you. may Allah bless our hustles |

Because u are dating a beautiful girl doesn't mean u can't have other beautiful girls in ur life, u don't have to date dem. Wen women speak don't interpret it literalilily coz u will miss the point. What ds girls are simply saying is that they want a man wu is gentle yet firm, courageous yet considerate and a man who is a challenge(makes dem experience new things in new ways both on and off bed) not a routine man. If u ask ds girls personally dey would never want their man to cheat. Women and men speak different languages. And mind u most women want this kind of Man I described whether she is born in d village or a city girl, it's instinct and dy recognise it wen dey meet u. |

Congrats bro, I desire a job in oil and gas industry as a geoscientist, Please what software did u learn and if you don't mind, can u share ur list of oil and gas companies in Lagos, i have tried sending unsolicited mails and hve considered calling but ur msg has taught me dt it doesn't work still. My email is freestyllar@yahoo.com. Thanks. eedIe ejitemi1: I have got a job finally!! I want to thank God for d miraculous way in which he did it.
Let me tell you all my story. I studied an engineering course in the University, graduate with a 2.1 and finished my NYSC early last year. I have submitted countless applications online,(because I had a 2.1 I always get test invitations) & did over 20 tests and interviews but always get the "we will get back to you" feedback.
Out of frustration I took a 35K job offer as a Sales rep in a FMCG company, the MD of the company is very abusive and always hire and fire at will. I did this job for over a year till I got fed up because I couldn't take it anymore.
During the 1year period of working in the FMCG company, I kept updating my skills by learning AutoCAD, PDMS and 2 other engineering softwares from my savings because those trainings are very expensive.
I resigned few months back and relocated to Lagos. Then I continued applying for jobs online and then I compiled a list of almost 200 oil and gas companies in Lagos through google and linkedin contacts, wrote their names, addresses , fone numbers and emails. I sent unsolicited applications together with my CV to all the companies and waited for 2 weeks but yet no positive responses.
Then I changed tactics and started sending text messages & calling the landlines of those companies yet I kept getting the same responses of "we are not employing for now", "the oil industry is in crisis", "We'll get back to you if we need you".
Then last week I got fed up and started visiting those companies physically to drop hard copies of my CVs and applications. Then within few days, I started getting test & interview invitations, but all are still inconclusive. Then I got a call last week friday to come to an oil servicing company I submitted CV in VI. I went there I was told they are interested in me because of the engineering softwares I said I know and we did the interview and on the spot the told me the job function as a Trainee Engineer, and I was really happy that I will get good experience with the job, but what shocked me the most was when the issue of salary came, they asked what I would collect I wanted to mention that it is in the region of 70-90K so as not to discourage them because we are all aware of the Issues in the Oil & Gas industry and also because the company was a small one with just an ugly bungalow and am sure their staffs are not up to 20, then I told them am willing to go with their company's structure for entry-level engineers. Then the HR just told me the will start with an amount (over 100K) & that I am to start immediately, and asked if I will take it, I was speechless and just said Yes, because despite the mass sacking in the oil industry & bad economy I still got a good job without any connection or experience in the oil industry. I couldn't hold my joy when I was shown to my work station and work commenced. Pls fellow applicants don't loose hope, keep trusting God and He will do it for us all.
