Politics / Supreme Court Halts Saraki’s Trial At CCT by centvin008(m): 11:06am On Nov 12, 2015
The Supreme Court on Thursday ordered stay of proceedings of the trial of Senate President Bukola Saraki before the Code of Conduct Tribunal on 13 counts of false assets declaration.

The order of Justice John Fabiyi-led five-man panel of the apex court followed a concession given by the Federal Government’s counsel, Mr. Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), for the proceedings of the tribunal to be halted if Saraki’s main appeal would be given an accelerated hearing.

The decision on Thursday came after Saraki’s lead counsel, Mr. Joseph Daudu (SAN), had argued his client’s motion for stay of the CCT’s proceedings, and while Jacobs was responding.

In a unanimous decision read by Justice Fabiyi, the apex court ordered the tribunal “to tarry awhile.”

He ordered Jacobs to file his respondents’ brief in response to Saraki’s appellant’s brief served on him in court on Thursday within seven days.

The Supreme Court also ordered Daudu to file further response to Jacobs’ brief, if he so desired ‎within seven days thereafter.

Justice Fabiyi said the date for the hearing of the appeal would be communicated to parties in due course.

With the Thursday’s order, the tribunal could no longer sit on the case which was already adjourned till November 19.

‎Saraki had appealed to the Supreme Court against the October 30, 2015 judgment of the Court of Appeal which affirmed the competence of the charges instituted against him and the jurisdiction of the CCT to try him.

Some lawyers, who appeared for Saraki at the tribunal on November 5, stormed out of the courtroom in protest against a ruling of the CCT, led by Danladi Umar, rejecting their request to adjourn the trial indefinitely because of the pending appeal before the Supreme Court.

The tribunal chairman had adjourned till November 19 to enable Saraki to engage new lawyers.

A two-to-one split decision of the Court of Appeal in Abuja had, on October 30, dismissed Saraki’s appeal against the competence of the tribunal and the charges against him comprising 13 counts of false declaration of assets while he was Kwara State Governor in 2003.

In his substantive appeal to the Supreme Court against the appeal court judgment, Saraki maintained that the panel of the CCT was not well constituted because it comprised two members instead of three provided for by law.

He also, among other grounds, argued that the charges against him were incompetent since they were filed in the absence of the Attorney-General of the Federation.

Romance / Facebook Makes Us 'lonely And Angry' See Why! by centvin008(m): 6:23am On Nov 11, 2015
Facebook makes us 'lonely and angry' because people compare themselves to the seemingly perfect lives of their friends.
Facebook can make users 'lonely and angry' because they are constantly comparing themselves to other people's seemingly perfect lives, a new study has found.

Checking the social networking site provides members with instant gratification in the form of 'likes' and friend requests - but it also gives an artificial impression that others are happier than they are, researchers claimed.

Denmark's Happiness Research Institute conducted an experiment on 1,095 people in Denmark, who gave an averge ranking of their current state of happiness at 7.6 out of ten.
They then asked half of them to stop using Facebook for one week, and the other half to continue as normal.

After seven days, those who had not logged onto the site reprted their happiness at 8.12 out of ten, while for those had, their happiness remained unchanged.
Those deprived of Facebook also reported an increase in real-world social activity and were significantly less angry and lonely than the Facebook users, researchers said.

Happiness Research Institute CEO Meik Wiking said that the experiment's results were 'largely down to people's tendency to compare themselves to others'.

He added: 'Facebook distorts our perception of reality and of what other people's lives really look like. We take in to account how we're doing in life through comparisons to everyone else, and since most people only post positive things on Facebook, that gives us a very biased perception of reality.

'If we are constantly exposed to great news, we risk evaluating our own lives as less good.'

Mr Wiking likened Facebook to 'a non-stop good news channel that paints false pictures of edited lives'.
He said: 'I hope that the experiment's results will get people to think about their own Facebook use, or to at least remember that not everything is as it seems within one's news feed.

'There can also be positive benefits from Facebook and social media, but I think the thing to always be aware of is the effect it has on our perception of reality.

'This constant flow of great news we see on Facebook only represents the top 10 percent of things that happen to other people. It shouldn't be used as the background for evaluating our own lives.'

Politics / Forgive Us For Mistake Of Past 16 Years, PDP Apologize To Nigerians by centvin008(m): 6:07am On Nov 11, 2015
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday tendered an apology to Nigerians, admitting that it made mistakes in the past.

The party also pleaded for forgiveness from persons whose toes it stepped on during its 16 years of governance.

But the party added that it is repositioning to bounce back in 2019 and deliver dividends of democracy to the people. The chairman of PDP national conference organising committee, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, stated this in Abuja yesterday.

According to him, the first mistake PDP made was the jettisoning zoning in 2011.

Dokpesi noted that following the death of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua who died in power, PDP would have allowed a Northerner to complete his tenure.

But the PDP had fielded former President Goodluck Jonathan from the South, who was acting President, as its presidential candidate in 2011.

He said, “Make no mistake, the PDP is aware that there were errors made along the way. We admit that at certain times in our past, mistakes have been made, we did not meet the expectations of Nigerians. We tender apology. But the past is exactly what it is. We call on all party faithful, supporters and sympathisers to partner with us going forward.

“You asked about the mistakes the party made. The Ekweremadu’s report is very explicit on that. It acknowledged the fact that the party made a lot of strides during the last 16 years, but also, there was no internal democracy; there was impunity within the party. There was no level playing ground for members of the party.

“The zoning principles of the party were abandoned and a gamut of all other issues which will come up during the conference. And for all these and for the people who have been offended, for people whose toes were stepped upon, we tender unreserved apology.

Meanwhile, Taraba State governor Ishaku Darius has faulted the judgement of election petitions tribunal which ordered his removal, saying that he is not perturbed over the verdict. He , however, called for the sanitation of the judiciary.

Ishaku Wardifen, one of the 100 declared-wanted Boko Haram terrorists, has been captured by vigilant troops of the 23rd Brigade Special Battalion in Maiha, Adamawa State.

He has been handed over to military intelligence for further investigation and possible prosecution.

“Visual matching with photographs on the poster of the 100 declared suspected Boko Haram terrorists wanted list released by the Nigerian [Army] last month, shows that he clearly resembles the suspect on serial number 22 on the list,” the statement said.

The army reiterated its call on all citizens and well-meaning residents of Nigeria to continue to be more vigilant and security conscious towards ridding the country of the menace of terrorism and insurgency.

Religion / Federal High Court Dismisses TB Joshua's Lawsuit Against Lagos Coroner' by centvin008(m): 2:00pm On Nov 09, 2015
A lawsuit filed by controversial Lagos prophet of the Synagogue Church, T.B. Joshua and building engineers affiliated with his church which challenged the verdict of a Coroner's court that found the church negligent in the fatal collapse of a guest house on its premises has been dismissed today clearing way for the trial of Mr. Joshua and the Synagogue church.

Justice Ibrahim Buba of a Federal High Court in Lagos turned down the prophet's request in a ruling delivered a while ago. The prophet had applied to the court to stop his trial as recommended by a coroner's court.

A Coroner Magistrate Oyetade Komolafe had determined the Synagogue Church and its contractors were negligent in the fatal collapse of a building that killed 116 people in September 2014.

The Coroner had recommended to the Lagos State Government that the church be tried, but TB Joshua and his church management challenged the findings and recommendation.

Prophet TB Joshua throughout the Coroner's inquest on the building collapse hired high-powered attorneys to frustrate the inquest and also prevent his appearance as an important witness at the inquest.

Politics / 1,000 Defect From APC To PDP In Bayelsa by centvin008(m): 3:56pm On Nov 01, 2015
Ahead of the governorship election in Bayelsa State, no fewer than 1,000 members of the All Progressives Congress, APC in the state have defected to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
The defecting members, comprising 800 delegates at the APC governorship primary election held on August 22 and August 29 declared for the PDP at a ceremony which took place at Peace Park, Yenagoa, yesterday.
The defectors were led into the Peace Park venue by two prominent members of the APC, Senator John Brambaifa and Mr. Alex Ekiotenne.
They were received at the venue by Governor Seriake Dickson; Deputy National Chairman, PDP, South-South, Mr. Cairo Ojuigbo; Acting State Chairman, PDP, Mr. Serena Dokubo-Spiff; Bayelsa Deputy Governor, Rear Admiral John Jonah (retd.), among other PDP leaders.
Addressing the defectors, Dickson commended Brambaifa and Ekiotenne for returning to the PDP fold which they left about five months ago.
Dickson said, “We are happy that Brambaifa and Ekiotenne are back to the PDP. They have been prominent strategists for the PDP. Our government, Bayelsa PDP and Bayelsans are happy that we are now complete.
“While the storm lasted, I always remembered them for their patriotism towards Bayelsa and the Ijaw nation. With them, our restoration crusade is full and ready to sail. They led the foundation for the mass movements of some PDP members to the APC.
“Today, it is operation ‘Wind up APC in Bayelsa. This is just the beginning of winding up the APC in Bayelsa. We will continue to receive our brothers and sisters who were misled.”
The governor, who urged the crowd to observe a minute’s silence for the late former Governor of the state, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, said since Alamieyeseigha’s demise, was feeling a sense of emptiness.
He said: “But with these two persons, I am a bit consoled. If not for the way they harassed and killed Alamieyeseigha, he would have been here with us.”
In his remarks, Ekiotenne said with their return to the PDP, the APC in Bayelsa was buried.

Politics / Tribunal In Delta State Has Upheld The Election Of Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa (PDP). by centvin008(m): 4:38pm On Oct 26, 2015
The governorship election tribunal sitting in Delta state has reportedly upheld the election of Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The Tribunal also dismissed a petition filed by the governorship candidate of Labour Party, Chief Great Ogboru.

Earlier it was reported that there is anxiety in Delta state as the election petition tribunal in the state would be deciding the fate of Okowa soon.

The tribunal was expected to give its final ruling within 48 hours on two petitions filed against the victory of Okowa as governor in the April 11, 2015 governorship election in the state, This Day reports.

The impending judgement was said to be making members of both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the People Democratic Party (PDP) apprehensive.

Okowa of the PDP was declared winner of the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The candidate of the APC, O’tega Emerhor, and that of the Labour Party (LP), Great Ovedje Ogboru, went to court, challenging his victory.

In the petitions, Emerhor and Ogboru urged the tribunal to nullify the election on the grounds of substantial non-compliance with the Electoral Act, 2010 (as amended).

Two weeks ago, Justice Nasiru Gunmi, chairman of the tribunal announced that the three-man panel would pronounce its judgment at a date not later than October 28, 2015, based on the fact that counsel to the respective parties (petitioners and respondents) had on Tuesday, 13 October, 2015 concluded the adoption of their respective written addresses by both the respondents and the petitioners.

At the weekend, Rivers State Election Petition Tribunal dismissed Nyesom Wike as the governor of the state and ordered that a rerun be conducted. After the tribunal’s verdict, Wike made it known that that he will appeal the judgment.

On October 21, an election tribunal in Akwa Ibom also ordered a rerun of the governorship election in the state. The Justice Sadiq Umar-led tribunal sitting in Abuja ordered the INEC to conduct a re-run election in 18 local government areas of the state.

Nairaland / General / What Do You Think About Us Deployment Of Troops To Cameroon? by centvin008(m): 5:07pm On Oct 15, 2015
The Nigerian authorities have supported the decision of the United States to send 300 troops to Cameroon to fight against Boko Haram.

It should be recalled that the US officials announced on Wednesday that a front force of 90 American army personnel had arrived in Cameroon.

The Nigerian federal government, represented by presidential spokesperson Garba Shehu, characterized it as a “welcome development”.

Shehu was quoted as saying by AFP:

“The United States has given the pledge to support the fight against Boko Haram in Nigeria and in the region. This is the fulfillment of that pledge and we are very happy about it. The United States’ move is quite commendable.”
The Nigerian military also backed the decision saying it demonstrated the importance of cooperation in the battle against terrorism.

Army spokesman, Colonel Rabe Abubakar, said:

“This is how the fight can be done collectively with partners cooperating with us to fight against a common cause — terrorism — which has been ravaging the region for some time now. We appeal to other nations to emulate the good example of the United States. The United States has experience in fighting terrorism.

“Fighting terrorism is not one nation’s issue. It requires a global effort. We all need to work together… to fight this evil.”

Cameroon is part of the Multinational Joint Task Force involved in the counter-terrorism operations in the region.

In a recent development Niger Republic, another MNJTF member, declared the state of emergency in the southeastern region of Diffa following the death of at least 40 people in recent Boko Haram attacks.

Nairaland / General / Naira Still Depreciates At The Parallel Market on wednesday by centvin008(m): 4:47pm On Oct 08, 2015
Reports from the parallel market has revealed that the Naira continued to depreciated against the dollar on Wednesday, October 7, despite the sale of foreign currency to operators of Bureau de Change (BDC).

The Nigerian naira depreciated from N224 to N225 against the US dollar in the parallel market on Wednesday, October 7.

According to Premium Times, the naira lost N1.00 to the dollar on Wednesday afternoon, as it traded N225 to the dollar as against N224 on Tuesday, October 6.
However, the official interbank rate maintained its value at N197 to the dollar.

A rebound of the naira was expected by traders of the parallel market, especially after the sales of foreign currency to the BDC by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

It is recalled that 2-months-ago, the naira hit a record low of 241 against the dollar at the parallel market, Reuters reported.

Sources note that the ban on importers from accessing the Nigerian foreign exchange markets for the importation of 41 items had led to the volatility of the naira-dollar exchange rate at the black market.

Foreign exchange dealers say the artificial scarcity of the United States currency still pervades the market.

Financial experts have inferred that the CBN needs to devalue the naira to allow the local currency achieve an equilibrium price against the dollar.

The evaluation of ratings agency, Standard & Poor’s said Nigeria will inevitably have to devaluate its currency, most possibly by more than 15%, but the CBN officials have said that they are not intending to devalue naira to keep its rate in accordance with its real value as reflected by the parallel market.

This stand by the CBN raised concerns among investors who fear that with such policies, Nigeria is likely to lose its membership in the JPMorgan Government Bond Index-Emerging Markets (GBI-EM) due to official policies.

Nairaland / General / We Will Soon Expose Boko Haram Sponsors -army (pic) by centvin008(m): 5:55pm On Oct 05, 2015
By  Ogbonna Stephen Okechukwu and agency reports
The Nigerian army on Sunday said it has begun investigations into some names of suspected Boko Haram sponsors in connection with recent suicide bombings in the Maiduguri and plan to expose them soon.
The commander, Operation ‘Lafiya Dole,’ Maj.-Gen. Yushau Abubakar, gave this hint while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria in Maiduguri.
Said he:  “We searched the houses of suspects and certain items that we recovered in the vicinity gave us some clues.
“Investigation on those that we suspect are either participating or hiding, fueling or conniving with those that carried out those acts is ongoing,” Maj. Gen. Yushau Abubakar told journalists on sunday. “They will be exposed in due course.”
At least 10 people were killed and 39 others wounded when four suicide bombers detonated themselves outside a mosque Thursday night in the Sajeri area of Maiduguri. The attackers were young girls and suspected Boko Haram terrorists, Nigeria’s Defense Headquarters in Abuja said Friday. The Nigerian military has since launched a probe into people believed to be sponsoring the attacks.
At least 117 people were killed in a wave of violence in Maiduguri on Sept. 20,
Abubakar, commander of “Operation Lafiya Dole,” which means “Peace By Force, said “the recent spate of attacks was aimed at diverting the Nigerian army from achieving its goal of defeating Boko Haram before the end of the year”. He urged Nigerian citizens to report any suspicious movement within the region to security agents immediately.
“We are doing as much as we could to ensure that we completely eradicate the insurgents as quickly as possible, because we are aware of the timeline within which to complete the task,” he said on sunday. “I want to assure all that for every second that passes, we get more committed to fighting the insurgents; we cannot be deterred.”

Romance / Two Female Bankers Fight Over Rich Businessman ( Pic) by centvin008(m): 3:24pm On Sep 30, 2015
It’s a shame the rate at which some ladies of today are loosing their pride and morals carelessly all because of money. The ladies are reportedly staff of a commercial bank. One of them went behind the back of her colleague to corner the fat account of a businessman after giving the man her body. The second lady also gave her body to the man but the man still gave his account to just one of them. There were reportedly talks like: “Why did you go behind to take his account after I took you there. You are mad. I will deal with you”, *The man no like you, na me him like. Is it my fault? I gave him what he wanted and got the account!” as they wriggled each other on the floor. More photos below:

Nairaland / General / (pic) 500 Migrants From Nigeria, Ghana, Others Rescued In Mediterranean by centvin008(m): 9:53pm On Sep 27, 2015
Some 500 migrants were rescued in seven operations launched over the weekend in the Mediterranean, the Italian coastguard said.
A spokesman told AFP on Sunday that four of the rescue operations had already wound up but the others were ongoing.
“Saturday was quiet on the whole but now there is further movement,” he said. “We have had several interventions — one by a ship belonging to (medical charity) MSF, two coastguard units as well as an Italian naval ship and a ship belonging to EU Navfor Med,” he said.
Over 140 migrants and refugees, mainly from Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal and Sierra Leone who were transported by the German navy frigate Werra as part of the European external action service EU Navfor Med, wait to disembark at the Augusta harbour in eastern Italy on September 27, 2015. Some 500 migrants were rescued in seven operations launched over the weekend in the Mediterranean, the Italian coastguard said. The EU Navfor Med is a military operation launched at the end of June to identify, capture and dispose of vessels and rescue migrants undertaking risky journeys in a desperate bid to try and get to Europe from war-ravaged Syria and other trouble spots.
The mission is equipped with four ships, including an Italian aircraft carrier, and four planes. It is manned by 1,318 troops from 22 European countries.
A German frigate named Werra and an MSF (Doctors Without Borders) ship rescued 140 people from a giant dinghy on Saturday afternoon, according to an AFP photographer.
The migrants mainly came from the west African countries of Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal and Sierra Leone and left Libya three days earlier. They were rescued about 80 kilometres off the Libyan coast.
EU leaders have agreed to boost aid for Syria’s neighbours, including one billion dollars through UN agencies, in a bid to mitigate the refugee influx into Europe.
Some 500,000 people have come to Europe so far this year, the International Organization for Migration says, many of them taking perilous journeys across the Mediterranean on inflatable dinghies.
More than 2,800 people have died or disappeared making the crossing since January.

Politics / At Last, President Buhari’s Cabinet List Out Wednesday - ThisDay by centvin008(m): 8:23am On Sep 27, 2015
Odigie-Oyegun: we’re confident Senate will speedily approve nominees

President under pressure to relax criteria on ministers’ appointment

By Nduka Nwosu in New York, Iyobosa Uwugiaren and Onyebuchi Ezigbo in Abuja

The much-awaited list of President Muhammadu Buhari’s ministerial nominees will be released on Wednesday, the last day of the month. Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, disclosed this yesterday in New York. Adesina described Buhari as a man of his word, saying Nigerians would not be disappointed as September, the date given for the announcement of members of his cabinet, remains sacrosanct.

With just three days to the end of September, the month Buhari promised to send the list of his ministerial nominees to the Senate for approval, his senior special assistant on media and publicity, Mr. Garuba Shehu, had earlier assured that the president will keep his promise. Shehu gave the assurance yesterday.

This was as Buhari’s party, All Progressives Congress, expressed its confidence that the president would not disappointment the citizens with regard to the appointment of ministers and governance, generally. APC National Chairman John Odigie-Oyegun told THISDAY yesterday by telephone that Buhari meant well for the country and he will do everything humanly possible to ensure good governance.
THISDAY also learnt that the president was under intense pressure to relax his tough standards for qualifying persons for positions in his planned cabinet to avoid alienating many members of his party.
Shehu said, “The president had said it twice that he would submit his ministerial list to the National Assembly in September. As you can see, that position has not changed.”

The presidential aide, who spoke from New York where Buhari was attending the summit of the United Nations General Assembly, advised Nigerians to wait till the end of September.
Odigie-oyegun also urged Nigerians to continue to support the APC administration, saying the party would not shirk its responsibility to the people.

On APC’s position on the release of the ministerial nominees’ names this month, Odigie-Oyegun said, “There is no cause for alarm. We are confident the president will keep his promise. He will not disappoint Nigerians on his pledge to provide good governance for the enhancement of the nation.”

The national chairman also assured on the readiness of the party to galvanise support for the speedy approval of the ministerial list when it is presented to the National Assembly. He said the APC members in the National Assembly were already aware of the need to cooperate to ensure that nothing delayed the roll out of the administration.
The delay by the president in the release of the ministerial list has been attributed to a “suffocating pressure” from some powerful political forces requesting him to shift his ground, especially, in relation to the appointment of persons who, though accused of corruption, have not been convicted in court.

Buhari has consistently said he would not appoint people with questionable character as ministers.
But this well-intended stand of the president has been exploited by political opponents of whoever is believed to be on the cabinet list, as all sort of petitions sometimes containing spurious allegations have been written against likely nominees.
An insider told THISDAY yesterday that the president was still battling to resolve “this moral question.”

The source said, “President Muhammadu Buhari has consistently told us that he would not appoint corrupt and people with questionable characters as members of his cabinet. But in the last few weeks, he has come under suffocating pressure to shift his ground.
“The argument of many people is that the president would side-line his party, the All Progressives Congress, if he maintains his ground to appoint only clean people. This is what has caused the delay and this is the moral question he is currently battling to resolve.”

THISDAY exclusively reported yesterday that as preparation for the submission of the ministerial list to the Senate by Buhari heated up, former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Buhari met on Friday at the United Nations Plaza in downtown Manhattan, New York City. Their meeting, which was held at the 37th floor of the plaza behind closed doors, came on the heels of speculations that the ministerial nominees would be announced soon. It was widely rumoured that the discussion of the two men centred on the appointment of ministers in the Buhari government.
A source familiar with the meeting told THISDAY, “The leaders decided to hold the meeting to discuss key national issues, crucial also is the ministerial list.”

The meeting came amid allegations of infighting and differences between Obasanjo and APC national leader and former Lagos State governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, over the nomination of ministers.
THISDAY learnt that at the UN General Assembly meeting, there were several lobbyists wanting to court Buhari’s attention ahead of the ministerial appointments.
