Health / Nano Membrane Waterless Toilet Backed By The Bill Gates Foundation For future by centvin008(m): 9:02pm On May 26, 2017
In developing countries, access to public utilities like running water and sewer systems are often not available. The lack of those resources leads to unsanitary conditions that can put people's lives at risk. Researchers at Cranfield University hope to put an end to that with the waterless Nano Membrane Toilet. The design has so much potential to change lives that it's been backed by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Cranfield University's Nano Membrane Toilet project has landed a major funding boost to secure the next phase of development of a novel and sustainable sanitation solution for the benefit of the huge number of people around the world who currently have no hope of being able to access a clean and affordable toilet in their home.

Dr Alison Parker, from the Cranfield Water Science Institute, said; "This is a great moment; the new funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will support our research teams in water, energy and design to tackle the considerable challenge of turning the laboratory prototype Nano Membrane Toilet into a product for the marketplace."

The Nano Membrane Toilet uses a waterless flush; a unique rotating mechanism that drops the waste into a holding tank whilst simultaneously blocking odour and the user's view of the waste. The solids then settle to the bottom of the tank, while the liquids float on the top. The solids are transported out of the tank by mechanical screw into a combustor where they are burnt and transformed into ash. The heat generated can be converted into electricity which is used to power toilet operations, and any residual energy is used for charging mobile phones or other low voltage items. The liquids pass over a weir in the holding chamber and into the membranes bundle. The unique nanostructure membrane allows clean water to be extracted from the waste which can subsequently be used in the household for washing or watering plants.

The toilet is designed for single-household use (up to ten people) and accepts urine and faeces as a mixture. Developed with the aspirations and needs of the user in mind, it is small and easy to transport to locations where there is no access to a water supply and sewer. In comparison to the public toilets relied on by urban communities around the world, a household toilet offers convenience, dignity and security especially for vulnerable groups like women, the disabled and the elderly.

A new video has also been released highlighting some of the recent innovations and improvements to the toilet. With World Toilet Day (19th November) helping to raise awareness and inspire action to tackle the global sanitation crisis, Cranfield's toilet is attracting interest from around the world, and was recently showcased at the Toilet Investment Summit in Mumbai, India.

Education / Why You Hate The Sound Of Your Voice And How You Can Change It by centvin008(m): 10:55pm On May 21, 2017
Listening to a recording of your voice can be excruciating, but it doesn't have to be. It's always unsettling to hear your own voice.
Whether it's higher than you thought it was, more nasally, or simply not at all like it sounds to your own ear, it's easy to find yourself harshly judging the way you sound on recordings.

This insecurity isn't totally unfounded, either.

The sound of your voice really does have a huge impact on how people around you make judgments about your potential and competence, and certain styles of speaking have demonstrable effects on perceptions of confidence or leadership abilities.

But before we get into the nitty-gritty of how you can use your voice to succeed, it's important to understand why our voices sound so different to us in the first place.

The science behind how you hear yourself speak
When you hear yourself speak in your day-to-day life, you hear your voice through a different medium than you hear the voices of others.

That's why hearing your voice played back to you on a recorded video or voicemail message can be so startling.

When someone speaks to you, their voice travels through your outer ear, ear canal, and eardrum before you perceive the sound.

When you speak, however, the sound waves that you propel into the air will not only cause your eardrum to vibrate, but other parts of your body as well.

Movement from your vocal cords travels through your body when you speak--and because lower-pitched tones travel through the body more easily than they pass through the air, you hear your voice as more rich and resonant than others will perceive it to be.

How your voice affects the way people see you
Considering the wealth of evidence that suggests listeners respond more strongly to the way you speak rather than the words you actually say, it's important to be aware of how your voice sounds to others.

In fact, recent research from Quantified Impressions, a communications analytics company, demonstrated that the "voice quality" of a speaker was worth more than twice as much as the content of the speaker's message.

Tone of voice is so important that hiring managers at some companies have begun taking into consideration the voices of applicants when choosing who to hire!

Experts have identified a few specific vocal habits that tend to irritate listeners.

The first is vocal fry, or the tendency to lower one's voice to the point of sounding creaky or gravelly.

The second is "uptalk," where the speaker ends each sentence with an upwards inflection that would ordinarily suggest that the statement is a question.

The last is volume control, and this one is pretty obvious: if you are speaking in a whisper or a booming roar, people will have to go to great lengths to either discern what you're saying or protect their own eardrums.

Train yourself how to speak
Fortunately, you have a lot of power over the way you speak. After all, it is your own voice. Here are a few simple exercises you can do to transform how others hear you.

The first (and most important) thing you can do is make a recording of yourself speaking.

This is the easiest and best way to find out how your voice sounds to the rest of the world.

If you add video to your sound recording, you'll also be able to analyze your body language, which is crucial, considering that most of our communications with others are nonverbal.

It will be even more helpful to record yourself speaking a wide range of sounds, pitches, and emotions.

Some people particularly dislike the quality of their voice when expressing anger, grief, or other stressful emotions, as these sentiments can cause the voice to tremble or quiver.

A second exercise you can try is speaking from different places in your body.

Speaking from your diaphragm will make your speech fuller and less breathy, while speaking from your throat will remedy a squeaky or nasally voice in short order.

The third vocal training hack is simple: stay hydrated! If you drink enough water, your vocal cords will stay limber, and you won't need to clear your throat as often.

Finally, just as an athlete requires regular exercise to stay fit, your vocal cords need frequent workouts to maintain peak performance.

There are a huge variety of vocal exercises to try, but lip trills and deep breathing routines are a great place to start.

These tricks will help you regain control over the way others perceive you, and stop you from flinching the next time you hear your own voice.

Sports / Alisher Usmanov Makes £1bn Offer To Buy Arsenal From Owner Stan Kroenke by centvin008(m): 9:07pm On May 19, 2017
Usmanov, a Russian metals magnate, owns 30 per cent of the club and has allegedly approached Stan Kroenke, the US sports mogul, to buy full control of Arsenal
Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov has reportedly made a £1bn bid to buy out rival shareholder Stan Kroenke at Arsenal.

Usmanov, a Russian metals magnate, holds a 30 per cent stake at the Emirates and has approached Kroenke, who owns 67 per cent, to buy full control of the club.

According to the Financial Times, Kroenke has yet to formally respond to the offer. It's understood the American, a US sports mogul, did not initially dismiss the approach, which was made last month, but has since informally indicated he is not interested in selling his share.

The two businessmen have clashed in the past over the direction of the club, with the Russian concerned by Kroenke's lack of investment.

Speaking to Bloomberg last month, Usmanov argued Arsene Wenger was not entirely to blame for Arsenal's disappointing season but suggested Kroenke and the board were at fault.

"I do not think that the coach alone is to be blamed for what is happening," Usmanov said, before adding that the board – and main shareholder – "bear huge responsibility".

With Arsenal set to miss out on a top-four finish, and the reward of Champions League football that comes with it, the side stand to lose around £50m in revenue next season.
The FT reports that numerous other bidders are circling, though neither Kroenke or Ushamov are planning on disposing their stakes in the club.

Usmanov first acquired Arsenal shares in 2007, when, together with Farhad Moshiri, he bought a 14.6 per cent stake in the club for £75m.

The Russian then went on buy out Moshiri last year, increasing his share hold to 30 per cent.

Kroenke became majority shareholder at Arsenal in 2011 after first buying into the club in 2007. The American has been accused of being an absentee owner and has faced considerable backlash from Arsenal fans in recent years.

Nairaland / General / The Uk's Top 10 Highest Earning Speed Cameras & How Much They Add To The Economy by centvin008(m): 8:18am On May 11, 2017
Revealed: The locations of the UK's top 10 highest earning speed cameras including one that raked in £600,000 in just one year
The nation's most prolific cameras, based on figures from 2015
The snap-happiest of all was located near Grantham in Lincolnshire
It caught 6,064 speeders during 2015, which works out at 19 a day on average
Three cameras on the M25 feature and are responsible for £1.2m in fines

A new investigation has revealed the nation's highest earning speed cameras.
Based on figures for 2015, Carole Nash estimates that the 10 most profitable cameras in the country racked up £3.2 million in speeding fines over the 12 month period.
The motorcycle insurance broker said the biggest money maker was located just south of Grantham on the A1 in Lincolnshire, tallying up a massive 6,064 fines in total.
But there's new reason to be cautious of this spot in particular...
The findings were the result of a freedom of information request to the UK's largest county police constabularies. Of the 35 contacted, 20 responded with information about their snap-happiest speed cameras.
The fixed camera on the northbound carriageway of the A1 close to Grantham in Lincolnshire was the most prolific two years ago, according to the data Carole Nash received, but it's certainly not the most lucrative standalone camera today.

It was replaced by eight average speed cameras erected to monitor the route, which cost £750,000 to install last year, according to the Lincolnshire Echo.
The year before it was replaced, the most commonly triggered camera caught a total of 6,064 speeders - that works out at 17 offences every day on average.
With the standard fine of £100 applied - and taking into account that all the penalties were upheld if contested - the annual earnings accumulated from limit-exceeding motorists surpassed half a million pounds.
The second most profitable speed camera, according to the research, was further north in Lincolnshire - a section of the M180 close to Scunthorpe caught 5,853 speeders that year, clocking up £585,300 in fines.
Unsurprisingly, Britain's busiest motorway - the M25 - had three separate locations feature in Britain's 10 highest earning speed cameras on 2015.
All three captured a whopping 12,122 speeders, resulting in £1.2million in collective fines. The trio are between junctions 17 and 18 close to Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, north west of London, in both directions, and betrween junction 5 and Clacket Lane Services, south east of London, in Surrey.

Rebecca Donohue, head of marketing at Carole Nash, said: 'With some speed cameras issuing tickets that amount to well into the hundreds of thousands it's understandable that, at times, motorists feel like they are being taxed again.
'It's really important to remember that such cameras are put in place to reduce accidents and save the lives of motorists and bikers, something which is far more important than any amount of money.
'We wanted to find out which roads are prone to speeding motorists to help raise awareness of the dangers in those areas and encourage bikers and drivers alike to take extra care on these roads.'

THE 10 HIGHEST EARNING UK SPEED CAMERAS IN 2015
1. A1, Great Ponton North Bound, Lincolnshire - £606,400
2. M180, West of River Trent, Scunthorpe - £583,500
3. M25, London Orbital junction 17 and 18, Rickmansworth - £538,500
4. M25, London Orbital junction 5 and Clacket Lane Services -£373,300
5. A12, Stratford St Mary Southbound - £305,400
6. M25 London Orbital junction 18 and 17, Rickmansworth - £255,400
7. A22, Eastbourne Road, Halland - £167,100
8. A3, Esher Bypass, Hook - £149,700
9. A14, Bythorn, Cambridgeshire - £121,200
10. A34, Milton, Southbound - £63,600

Politics / Whatsapp DOWN - Messaging Service NOT WORKING For Thousands Of Users by centvin008(m): 10:46pm On May 03, 2017
WhatsApp DOWN - Messaging service NOT WORKING for thousands of users
WHATSAPP is down across the UK and other parts of the world with thousands unable to access popular messaging service.
WhatsApp is down tonight.

It appears the service went offline at around 9pm with thousands now unable to access the popular messaging service.

Down detector is showing thousands of outages across the UK and other parts of the world including Brazil and the US.

One user wrote on a forum: "Showing Connecting.... Looks like an issue with the service
Whilst another said: "Whatsapp stopped working for me at 21:13 today."

It's currently unclear what is causing the issues or when things will be back online.
WhatsApp last experienced a major outage on New Year's Eve – with users around the globe reporting down-time.

A spokesperson for the app then said: "Some people have had trouble accessing WhatsApp for a short period today.

"We're working to restore service back to 100 per cent for everyone and we apologise for the inconvenience."

This outage comes as WhatsApp is working on a major update.

The Facebook-owned chat app is testing a new feature that would allow users to pin conversations at the top of the menu within the app.
Those who use WhatsApp as their primary messaging app will be aware the popular chat can get pretty crowded, pretty fast.

This can lead to important conversations being pushed down the list – and lost below the fold.

Thankfully, the ability to pin key conversations presents an elegant solution to the problem. And could save your thumb a lot of scrolling.

WhatsApp beta 2.17.162 and beta 2.17.163  both include the ability to pin three conversations to the top of the chat list.

Health / Malaria: Kenya, Ghana And Malawi Get First Vaccine-bbc by centvin008(m): 8:06pm On Apr 24, 2017
The world's first vaccine against malaria will be introduced in three countries - Ghana, Kenya and Malawi - starting in 2018.
The RTS,S vaccine trains the immune system to attack the malaria parasite, which is spread by mosquito bites.
The World Health Organization (WHO) said the jab had the potential to save tens of thousands of lives.
But it is not yet clear if it will be feasible to use in the poorest parts of the world.
The vaccine needs to be given four times - once a month for three months and then a fourth dose 18 months later.
This has been achieved in tightly controlled and well-funded clinical trials, but it is not yet clear if it can be done in the "real-world" where access to health care is limited.
It is why the WHO is running pilots in three countries to see if a full malaria vaccine programme could be started. It will also continue to assess the safety and effectiveness of the vaccination.
Dr Matshidiso Moeti, the WHO regional director for Africa, said: "The prospect of a malaria vaccine is great news.
"Information gathered in the pilot programme will help us make decisions on the wider use of this vaccine.
"Combined with existing malaria interventions, such a vaccine would have the potential to save tens of thousands of lives in Africa."
The pilot will involve more than 750,000 children aged between five and 17 months. Around half will get the vaccine in order to compare the jab's real-world effectiveness.
In this age group, the four doses have been shown to prevent nearly four in ten cases of malaria.
This is much lower than approved vaccines for other conditions.
Malaria vaccine: How good is good enough?
It also cuts the most severe cases by a third and reduces the number of children needing hospital treatment or blood transfusions.
But the benefits fall off significantly without the crucial fourth dose.
Ghana, Kenya and Malawi were chosen because they already run large programmes to tackle malaria, including the use of bed nets, yet still have high numbers of cases.
Each country will decide how to run the vaccination pilots, but high-risk areas are likely to be prioritised.
Despite huge progress, there are still 212 million new cases of malaria each year and 429,000 deaths.
Africa is the hardest hit and most of the deaths are in children.
The pilots are being funded by: Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, the Global Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria, Unitaid, the WHO and GSK.
Dr Seth Berkley, the chief executive of Gavi, said: "The world's first malaria vaccine is a real achievement that has been 30 years in the making.
"Today's announcement marks an important step towards potentially making it available on a global scale.
"Malaria places a terrible burden on many of the world's poorest countries, claiming thousands of lives and holding back economies.
"These pilots are crucial to determining the impact this vaccine could have on reducing this toll."

Family / Parents' Mobile Use Harms Family Life, Say Secondary Pupils - BBC by centvin008(m): 6:16pm On Apr 23, 2017
An overuse of mobile phones by parents disrupts family life, according to a survey of secondary pupils.
More than a third of 2,000 11 to 18-year-olds who responded to a poll said they had asked their parents to stop checking their devices.
And 14% said their parents were online at meal times, although 95% of 3,000 parents, polled separately, denied it.
The research was carried out by Digital Awareness UK and the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference.
Among the pupils:
82% felt meal times should be device-free
22% said the use of mobiles stopped their families enjoying each other's company
36% had asked their parents to put down their phones
Of pupils who had asked their parents to put down their phones, 46% said their parents took no notice while 44% felt upset and ignored.
Despite this, only a minority of parents (10%) believed their mobile use was a concern for their children - although almost half (43%) felt they spent too much of their own time online:
37% said they were online between three and five hours a day at weekends
5% said it could be up to 15 hours a day over a weekend
Research last year by DAUK and HMC showed almost half of secondary pupils were checking their mobile phones after they had gone to bed, amid warnings that they were arriving at school tired and unable to concentrate.
According to the new research, almost three-quarters of pupils (72%) said they were online between three and 10 hours a day - but for 11% this could rise to 15 hours at weekends and holidays and 3% said it could reach 20 hours.
And children's greatest worry about their own online use was lack of sleep, with 47% highlighting it as a major concern.
But among parents, only 10% worried about children's time online leading to sleep deprivation.
Mike Buchanan, headmaster of Ashford School in Kent and chairman of the HMC, which represents leading private schools, said it was time for parents, teachers and pupils "to rewrite the rulebook" on mobile devices, which "have become an integral part of life at school, work and play".
"Our poll shows that children are aware of many of the risks associated with overuse of technology but they need the adults in their lives to set clear boundaries and role model sensible behaviour.
"To achieve this, we need to join up the dots between school and home and give consistent advice," said Mr Buchanan.
'Wake-up call'
Emma Robertson, co-founder of DAUK, said too few parents knew how long their children were online, particularly at night, "or what they are actually doing online".
"We hope these findings will be a wake-up call for families and motivate them to have serious conversations about the safe and healthy use of technology," she said.
The research comes ahead of the HMC's spring conference, which will explore new ways of working between schools and families in both the state and independent sectors.
Parents and pupils at a leading academy chain, which runs both state and private schools in England, were invited to take part in the research earlier this month.

Sports / The Reason Cristiano Ronaldo Refuses To Get A Tattoo by centvin008(m): 6:54pm On Apr 22, 2017
Athletes love their ink – but not Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo, who is adamant he will never get a tattoo.

His reason may surprise you.

Regarded by many as an arrogant pretty boy, Ronaldo has made substantial donations to help children with debilitating diseases.

That's right, he passes on the permanent ink so he can continue to donate blood.

In many countries around the world, tattoos can impact a person's eligibility to give blood due to risks of cross-contamination and hepatitis.

"I don't have tattoos because I donate blood very often," Ronaldo told the Diretta News.
In 2015, Ronaldo was named the world's most charitable sportsperson, and he's showing no signs of slowing down.

In June, he donated his €600,000 Champions League win bonus to good causes.

One month later after winning the Euro Cup with Portugal, he donated his £275,000 Euro bonus to a Kids Cancer foundation.

Science/Technology / Steve Jobs Strictly Limited His Children's Use Of Ipad And Iphone by centvin008(m): 8:58am On Apr 22, 2017
Despite building one of the world's biggest tech companies, Steve Jobs strictly limited his children's use of technology
The success of devices like the iPod, iPad and iPhone made Steve Jobs a household name and earned him billions of dollars.

However, despite spending his life creating one of the world's biggest technology empires, he took a fairly strict view on gadgets when it came to his children.

Writing in the New York Times in 2014, Nick Bilton recalled a conversation he had with the late Apple chief executive (whose birthday is 24 February) after the launch of the first iPad.
Asking whether his children liked the new device, Jobs replied: "They haven't used it. We limit how much technology our kids use at home."

Surprisingly, taking this kind of approach is fairly common among powerful people in the tech world, Bilton believes.

Chris Anderson, former editor of Wired magazine and co-founder of drone manufacturer 3D Robotics, told him his children accuse him of being overly concerned about technology, saying none of their friends have the same strict rules when it comes to their gagets.

Anderson said: "That's because we have seen the dangers of technology firsthand. I've seen it in myself, I don't want to see that happen to my kids."

It's possible that Jobs had the same beliefs, especially considering he was famously obsessed with his company's products, and prone to angry outbursts when problems occurred.

Walter Isaacson, the author of Steve Jobs, a biography which last year was adapated into a film starring Michael Fassbender, told Bilton: "Every evening Steve made a point of having dinner at the big long table in their kitchen, discussing books and history and a variety of things."
No one ever pulled out an iPad or a computer," he said. "The kids did not seems addicted at all to devices."

Politics / BEDC Gives Okonjo-iweala Kinsmen Electricity After 7 Yrs Of Darkness by centvin008(m): 8:14am On Mar 18, 2017
https://www.nairaland.com/3654678/okonjo-iwealas-village-groans-after

By Emma Amaize OGWASHI-UKU- THE Benin Electricity and Distribution Company, BEDC, says it has restored power to Ogwashi Uku, the country home of the former Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, in Aniocha South Local Government Area, Delta State, after seven years of darkness.
Corporate Affairs Officer, CAO, BEDC, Mrs. Esther Okolie, in a statement, explained: “The restoration process started with a town-hall meeting organized by the members of Ogwashi-Uku D-Forum in collaboration with the Management of BEDC, led by the chief state head (Delta) Mr. Ernest Edgar, the business manager, Asaba business unit, Engr. Adekola. O. Abiodun and his technical team, among others. Residents of the community were said to be celebrating the new dawn, but have called for provision of more transformers, while the company assured that it would energize more customers in the coming days, as enumeration re-validation, network rehabilitation and safety checks continue in earnest. Mrs. Okolie stated: “Ogwashi- Uku happens to be the headquarters of Aniocha- South and is considered to be one of the biggest cities in Delta State with a polytechnic, banks and other parasatals; it has remained in the dark for over seven years until the intervention of BEDC, which is barely three years. No wonder the residents were so excited at welcoming BEDC team to the epoch- making occasion of power restoration to the area.” Her words: “The power supply restoration commenced on March 10 from Market Junction 300KVA, 11/0.415KV substation, located close to the motor park.  A total of six distribution substations were involved, namely motor park 300KVA, 11/0/415KV, Aghidiese Junction 300KVA, 11/0.415KV, Aghidie 300KVA, 11/0.415KV, Aghidiese 300KVA, 11/0.415KV, General Hospital 200 KVA, 11/0.415KV and Okwuogi 300KVA, 11/0.415 KV.” She stated:  “The chief state head, Delta, expressed shock at the level of vandalism of the network (given that BEDC had done rehabilitation work in June 2016), and pleaded with the communities leaders to work with BEDC to educate the public on the need to protect the equipment.” “Once more, we commend and congratulate the people of Ogwashi- Uku for achieving this laudable feat and we advise them to be committed to prompt settlement of their bills so as not to be like their neighbors who could not sustain BEDC’s services,” she added. Director General of D- Forum, Ogwashi-Uku, Pastor Joseph T. U. Nwadiashi, who was visibly elated at the restoration of electricity in the town,  commended BEDC for keeping fate with the community in line with Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC directive after many years of waiting, but pleaded that the company keep its promise of lighting up all parts of the town within a short period.

Health / World's First Contraception App That Is 99.99% Safe And Effective by centvin008(m): 10:48pm On Feb 09, 2017
Time to ditch the Pill? World's first contraception app that is as effective as a condom is given the seal of approval

Natural Cycles offers women a hormone-free alternative from daily oral tablet

A woman measures her temperature to find out whether it is a red or green day.

Green = 99.9% safe, while the app advises couples use a condom on red days

German-based certification body Tuv Sud approved it as a Class IIb device

An contraception app that uses body temperature to track a woman's menstrual cycle has been given the seal of approval.

Natural Cycles records daily temperature and uses an algorithm to plot fertility on a calendar.

In a clinical study of 4,000 women in 2016, it was claimed to be as effective as the contraceptive pill.

Now, German-based regulator Tuv Sud has approved it as a Class IIb medical device - the same level as acupuncture needles and blood bags.
The app is believed to be the first software of its kind to be certified as a contraception alongside condoms, the pill and intrauterine devices (IUDs).

Dr Elina Berglund, who created the app with her husband Dr Raoul Scherwitzl, said: 'Women around the world are interested in exploring effective non-hormonal, non-invasive forms of contraception.

'And now they have a new, clinically verified and regulatory approved option to choose from.'
A growing number of wearable devices and software have appeared that focus on female health and fertility, but none have previously been certified as clinically viable.

'Our high quality clinical studies, together with the required regulatory approvals, means we can provide women everywhere with a new option for contraception,' Dr Berglund added.

'Natural Cycles allow women to better understand their bodies so they can make choices that are right for them.'
Natural Cycle uses a woman's temperature to predict the days of the month when she is at her most fertile.

On these, red days, the app advises a couple use a condom to reduce the risk of becoming pregnant.

HOW TO USE THE APP

In just three steps, a woman can discover if she is at risk of becoming pregnant.

Measure your temperature with the NaturalCycles thermometer, as soon as you wake up
Enter your reading into the NaturalCycles app
Check your fertility: green day = 99.9 per cent safe and red day = use a condom

In the days leading up to ovulation, a woman's body is flooded by oestrogen, which cools the body, compared with the post-ovulatory stage.

During that second stage of the menstrual cycle, after ovulation, the hormone progesterone warms the body, raising its temperature.

The two phases are separated by ovulation day - when a woman is at her most fertile - when the body's temperature rises between 0.2 and 0.45°C.

Currently, uncontrollable mood-swings, spontaneous bouts of crying even a loss of libido are common complaints of the Pill.

There have also been associated risks with strokes, with a 2016 study published in the British Medical Journal suggesting that third generation pills raise the chance of a serious blood clot four fold.

But the drugs safety watchdog, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, said contraceptive pills are 'very safe, highly effective medicines' and a review had confirmed the risk of blood clots with all contraceptives is small.

Politics / Senator Shehu Sani To Nigerians: You Don’t Need Police Permit For Protest by centvin008(m): 11:25am On Feb 06, 2017
— Feb 5, 2017 8:46 pm | Leave a comment
The Chairman, Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Debts, Senator Shehu Sani on Sunday said Nigerians don’t need police permit to carry out protest against a government.
The Senator who represent Kaduna central under the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC), made the comment as a result of the much publicised protest by Nigerian Music star Innocent Ujah Idibia popularly known as 2face.

Senator Sani said any attempt by Police authority to stop the protest will amount to distortion of democracy.
The activist turned politician himself said, the Artiste has the fundamental right to protest or lead a protest to criticise any government policy or programme he felt is wrong or he’s opposed to quickly added that, the All Progressives Congress (APC) while in opposition embarked on series of peaceful protest during the administrations of former Presidents Goodluck Jonathan, Olusegun Obasanjo and even military dictatorship hence lack moral right to stop others by any means.

The Lawmaker, who was reacting to possibility of Nigerian Police Authority frustrating the protest told newsmen in Kaduna yesterday that, protest is part of democracy and should be graciously allowed once it is peaceful and void of breach of security.

He said, “Protest is a fundamental right in a democracy. In fact, citizens should be encouraged to organize and execute peaceful protest because it is a democratic channel through which people can express their strong opinion against policy, programme or action taken by government.

“A society that oppose violence must encourage the culture of peaceful protest. It is by encouraging people to peaceful protest that you can discourage them from going into violence.

“Tuface has the fundamental right to organize any protest. What we should not forget is that we came into power through popular mandate backed by strong culture, protest and criticism against the established establishment and system. For us to oppose any peaceful protest now, it simply contradict all that we have represented and claimed to have advocated for.

“Protest in a democracy is a civil expression of popular vote against the government. Before we came to power, we organize protest against previous administration. For someone like me, I’ve been a protester all my life.

“It is wrong for anybody or again nobody needs any police permit to organize any protest. Police should simply be informed to organize protection for anybody who want to protest. We led the protest against Jonathan. We led the protest against Obasanjo and even against military dictatorship here.

“As a government that is desirous of change, we cannot be seen to be opposed to any protest. Protest against government does not mean protest against President Muhammadu Buhari. But it is also good for us to understand that your support for the government should not include deny others their eight to criticize it and your opposition to the government should not deny others the fundamental right to support it. Therefore peaceful protest is civil and should be encouraged”, he narrated.

Foreign Affairs / Romania Protesters Not Backing Down After Decree Repeal And Want The Govt 2 Quit by centvin008(m): 10:51am On Feb 06, 2017
About 500,000 demonstrators have rallied across Romania, despite the government revoking a controversial decree that fuelled their discontent.
The left-wing government earlier scrapped the decree, which would have shielded many politicians from prosecution for corruption.
But protesters remain dissatisfied about a revised version of the bill which will now be put to parliament.
Some are calling for the government of PM Sorin Grindeanu to resign.
Recent days have seen Romania's largest protests since communism fell in 1989.The decision to repeal the decree was confirmed at an emergency government meeting in the capital Bucharest on Sunday.
But protesters expressed concerns about the government's plans to redraft the law and send it for debate in parliament, where it could be forced through.
Huge crowds swelled in the capital's Victory Square for a sixth day in a row.
A giant laser beamed the words "Do Not Give Up" and "Resignation" on to the government building housing the prime minister's office.
"This government is organised from the high level to the low like a mafia, and we don't want something like this," one protester, Profira Popo, told the Associated Press news agency.
No calm after the storm, by BBC's Nick Thorpe in Bucharest
Sunday night's demonstration in Bucharest was planned as the climax of the protest movement.
The government hoped that by scrapping the decree, calm would return to the streets of the country - but that hasn't happened yet.
Many in the crowd don't trust the government to keep to its word.
They are afraid that new legislation, promised by the prime minister when he abolished the decree, might contain some of the same elements in a different form.
The decree would have decriminalised abuse of power offences where sums of less than €44,000 (£38,000; $47,500) were involved.
Critics saw it as an attempt by the government to let off many of its own officials caught in an anti-corruption drive.
The government had argued that the changes were needed to reduce prison overcrowding and align certain laws with the constitution.
One immediate beneficiary would have been Liviu Dragnea, who leads the governing Social Democratic Party and faces charges of defrauding the state of €24,000.
The decree was originally passed on Tuesday and was due to come into effect on 10 February.
The constitutional court has still to rule, later this week, on the legality of the original decree.

Politics / Sick Leave: Buhari Could Remain In London For 4 More Months - Sahara Reporters by centvin008(m): 7:08pm On Feb 05, 2017
Buhari Extends Sick Leave, Could Remain In London For 4 More Months

According to Mr. Adesina, the president had planned to return to Abuja on Sunday evening but was advised to complete the test cycle before returning.

Assembly on Sunday, President Muhammadu Buhari expressed his desire to extend his medical leave in London in order to complete his treatment and await the results of his medical tests.

The extension of his medical leave was announced in a statement issued on Sunday by Femi Adesina, spokesperson to the president.

According to Mr. Adesina, the president had planned to return to Abuja on Sunday evening but was advised to complete the test cycle before returning. The notice of the extension, he added, has been forwarded to Senate President Bukola Saraki and House Speaker Yakubu Dogara.

The statement conveyed President Buhari's gratitude to Nigerians for their kind wishes.

Government spokesmen have also condemned rumors alleging that the president had died and advised Nigerians to desist from spreading such falsehoods.

SaharaReporters gathered that the president might need to remain in London for as long as four months to resolve a myriad of medical issues confronting the aging Nigerian leader.

Our presidency sources revealed that Mr. Buhari requires a major surgery that would force him to miss work for at least four months, but his kitchen cabinet members have refused to let him go for such a prolonged period due to the fear of him losing influence and power.

The statement issued by Mr. Adesina was silent on the exact date of the president's return.

Politics / Romanian Govt Repeals Controversial Corruption Decree After Days Of Mass Protest by centvin008(m): 2:58pm On Feb 05, 2017
Power of protest and a willing government.
Romanian government repeals controversial corruption decree after days of mass protest
Romania has repealed a decree decriminalising some corruption offences after days of mass protest.

"The decree was scrapped," a government official told Reuters, adding that an official statement would be released soon.

Yesterday Romania's Prime Minister Sorin Grindeanu said he would hold an emergency meeting to scrap the decree, which sparked the biggest protests in Romania since the end of communism in 1989.

“I don't want to divide Romania... Romania in this moment seems broken in two,” Mr Grindeanu said.

Protesters were angry that the measure waters down the country's fight against corrupt officials, including the ruling Social Democrats' party leader, and that it was passed in the middle of the night by emergency decree with no input from parliament.

Protestes continued this morning outside government offices in the capital of Bucharest, and some expressed doubt that the government would actually withdraw the measure.

Politics / Abia Elects New Speaker by centvin008(m): 7:05pm On Dec 29, 2016
The Abia House of Assembly on Thursday, elected a news Speaker, Mr Kennedy Njoku, representing Osisioma-Ngwa North Constituency.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Njoku’s election followed the removal of a former Speaker Chief Martins Azubuike, representing Isialangwa North Constituency.

The Deputy Speaker of the House, Dr Cosmos Ndukwe, who presided over the plenary, said that 20 out of 24 members signed the impeachment notice against Azubuike.

During the election conducted by the Clerk of the House, Mr John-Pedro Irokansi, Njoku, polled 17 votes to defeat Chief Chikwendu

Kalu, representing Isialangwa South Constituency, who polled three votes.
The Deputy Leader of the House, Chief Solomon Akpulonu, representing Obingwa East Constituency, who moved the motion for Azubuike’s removal, gave reasons for the action.

Akpulonu said that Azubuike “failed to ensure equitable distribution of positions and powers among members,” adding that he was “insensitive to the rights and needs of members and general staff of the assembly.”

He further said that “his autocratic practice has brought the assembly on a collision course with other arms of government and agencies of the state government.

“He has abused the office of the Speaker by using same for personal and private political interest.

“Therefore, pursuant to Section 92 (2c) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended. We, the members of the House, resolved to remove and hereby removed Martins Azubuike as Speaker,” Akpulonu said.

In his acceptance speech after his swearing-in, the new speaker thanked members for the confidence reposed in him.

Njoku gave assurance that the House under his leadership would make laws for the good governance of the state.
He said that the task ahead of the House was challenging adding that he appreciated the circumstances surrounding his emergence.

In a brief interview with newsmen, Njoku also promised to give every member a sense of belonging and avoid ‘’the banana peels’’ that swept off his predecessor.

Akpulonu told newsmen that all efforts made to persuade Azubuike to change his autocratic leadership style failed, hence the decision to remove him from office.

The effort made by newsmen to get Azubuike’s reaction on his removal was unsuccessful as he was said to have left shortly before they arrived at his official lodge on Okpara Avenue, Umuahia.

Business / Traders From Chad, Cameroon And Niger Rush To Kebbi For Rice by centvin008(m): 5:44pm On Dec 25, 2016
- Kebbi state has become a beehive of activities as sales increase

- Traders from Chad, Cameroon and Niger are rushing to Kebbi to buy rice

- The huge foreign demand has put smiles on people's faces
Nigeria has reaffirmed its position as giant of Africa, at least in one aspect, as people from all over Africa, are rushing to Kebbi state to buy rice, According to Leadership Sunday, the state has turned into a beehive of local and cross-border market activities following the current rice production boom in the state, which is being driven by the government of Governor Atiku Bagudu.
Merchants from the neighboring countries of Niger, Benin and Cameroun are reportedly trooping into the state.
According to eyewitnesses, in most of the major markets in the state, no fewer than 100 trailers, loaded with bags of rice leave the state on a daily basis.
Kebbi’s flagship rice is Faro. Other brands have names like Labana and the newly introduced LAKE Rice-which came about as a result of partnership between Lagos and Kebbi.

Reportedly residents of the state have appealed to the federal government to also buy a good portion of the produce and store in national grain reserves.

“It is pertinent for the federal government to buy up the rice produce from farmers in Kebbi and store up in silos and Government Strategic Grain Reserves across the country in order to avert any threat of shortage that is looming in the country.”

Engr Suleiman, who is a site manager of federal government-owned Kebbi Silos says the federal government’s Strategic Grain Reserve in the state has a capacity of preserving a hundred thousand metric tons of grains.

Also, Alhaji Sahabi Augie, the chairman of the Rice Farmers Association in Kebbi state, alarmed by the huge foreign demand of rice, has begged the federal government to join the purchase and storage “rather than just allow people from other countries besiege our markets and take away our food to their countries.”
Augie also confirmed that the state has been witnessing influx of grain buyers from different parts of the country and from neighbouring countries of Niger and Benin and Cameroon.

Meanwhile, a British media source has quoted, Lagos customs chief Haruna Mamudu who said 102 bags of fake rice was smuggled into the country to be sold during the festive season.

Preliminary examination of the product branded as "Best Tomato Rice" showed "how sticky the rice was and only God knows what would have happened if our people consumed it."

British Home Office Clarifies James Ibori’s Release From Prison
The boisterous former Delta State governor is hoping to return to Nigeria on his own terms when his United Kingdom troubles are supposedly over.
The British Home Office, speaking on today’s developments on the James Ibori case, clarified on Wednesday evening that all foreign national offenders given a custodial sentence are normally considered for deportation.

The boisterous former Delta State governor is hoping to return to Nigeria on his own terms when his United Kingdom troubles are supposedly over. That would enable him to put on a show of some sort among his supporters, and perhaps negotiate a deal with the current government in the country.

In a brief statement, Press Officer Richard Mellor declined to comment on ongoing legal proceedings, describing that as “inappropriate.” He however pointed out that where offenders are released by an Immigration Judge, the Office procedurally seeks the most stringent bail conditions while it continues to pursue their removal from the UK.

The Royal of Justice Court in London today ruled that the former Delta State governor be released following the completion of his conviction on money-laundering charges.

He is however being held in a flat on Abbey Road in the St. John’s Wood area of London, pending a confiscation hearing scheduled to begin next month.

Business / Naira Dips To N490/$ As CBN Seeks End To Black Market by centvin008(m): 4:46pm On Dec 21, 2016
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is seeking to ensure there is no black market as the naira sinks to 490 to a single dollar.

On Wednesday, the naira was trading at 314 at the official market, with parallel market recording 490/$1.

The British pound stood at 605, while the European Union currency, euro went for 510, a far cry of its 388,  327 range at the official side of the market respectively.
Vice President YemiOsinbajo, and Kemi Adeosun, minister of finance, had previously said the CBN was working on a foreign exchange system that eliminates arbitrage in the forex market.

Isaac Okorafor, the spokesperson for the bank, was quoted by Reuters to have said the bank was “ensuring that the forex market operates as effectively as we would envisage”.

He also said the aim was to “ensure there is no black market” but did not give details of how this would be achieved.

Godwin Emefiele, governor of the CBN, had said consistency that the parallel market could not be used to evaluate the true value of the local currency.

“It is unfair to use the shallow market as a basis for determining the value of our currency. No one uses the Travelex rate at Heathrow to determine the exchange rate for the pound in the United Kingdom,” Emefiele had said.

“So it is unfair to use that to determine the value of our currency. Those who are dealing in the market are doing so illegally. We should not be encouraging the tendencies of those people who are involved in capital flight, or those who want to conduct foreign exchange business without providing necessary documentation.”

Car Talk / New Vehicle Registration Scheme Begins March 31 – Adeosun by centvin008(m): 8:48pm On Dec 20, 2016
The Federal Government has fixed March 31, 2017 for the commencement of registration of automobiles being imported into the country under the Vehicle Identification Number scheme.

It is expected that the scheme will put an end to the smuggling of vehicles into the country through the land borders, and eliminate revenue leakage by ensuring that appropriate duties are paid on imported vehicles.

The Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, who disclosed this during the opening of a workshop on the integration of the National Vehicle Identification System held at the Customs Command and Staff College, Gwagwalada, Abuja on Monday, said the initiative aimed to introduce technology to counter the activities of smugglers and boost revenue collection.

In attendance at the workshop were the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Col. Hameed Ibrahim Ali (retd); Secretary of the Joint Tax Board, Muhammed Abubakar; Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps, Boboye Oyeyemi; and Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Alkali Usman, who represented the Inspector-General of Police.

Adeosun, according to a statement by her Special Adviser on Media, Festus Akanbi, stated that revenue would be increased by reducing leakages through the nation’s porous borders, adding that there would also be a reduction in imports under-declaration and evasion of duty payment.

The minister stated, “Going forward, we are introducing a new system where all vehicles will be registered using the Vehicle Identification Number, effective March 31, 2017. Customs clearance will be linked to the VIN, and this in turn, will be required by each state government at the point of vehicle registration.

“Effectively, any vehicle on which duty has not been paid will not be able to be registered and driven in Nigeria. We are using technology to make smuggling an unprofitable venture.”

She explained that members of the public would be advised to ensure that they obtained proof of customs duty payment when purchasing a vehicle to avoid being saddled with the liability of unpaid duties and related penalties.

The minister noted that the country was losing billions of naira annually to the activities of smugglers and described the VIN system as a powerful tool against the illicit and dangerous practice.

Adeosun added, “The VIN provides a form of identity for each vehicle that will be linked to proof of ownership and connected to a centralised database. Another advantage of the VIN is that the original vehicle manufacturers will be aware of the vehicles imported into Nigeria.

“This information is important where safety and other recalls are issued internationally. The manufacturers will now have no excuse for not extending the benefits of such recalls to Nigerian customers.

“The objective is to ensure transparency and accountability in the collection of duties and create a central system for tracking all vehicles coming into Nigeria independent of point of entry, shared database for all regulatory and enforcement agencies and requirements. As we expand the database to cover all cars, we will be able to tackle car theft and non-insurance of vehicles, among others.”

According to the minister, the collaboration between the Customs, FRSC and the Federal Inland Revenue Service will be instrumental to achieving this objective.

She added that the programme was also expected to significantly boost vehicle security and ease of transfer of vehicles from one owner to the other.

To find out just what passenger behavior rubs drivers the wrong way, we asked them to chime in.

Here are 17 annoying things you should probably stop doing right now:

1) Leaving one-star reviews for no reason
"One thing that might surprise people about the job is that even a four-star rating is bad. The whole system is set up so anything less than five stars is terrible for the driver."

—Lyft and Uber driver

2) Making your driver wait
"Don't ask for a ride unless you're ready to walk outside the second you order the ride."

—Lyft and Uber driver

3) Eating in the car
"I wish passengers would stop eating food in my car without asking. In order to drive for Uber or Lyft, you have to have a new car. Therefore your nachos in my new car cause undo stress."

—Lyft and Uber driver

4) Cancelling rides, especially when the driver is already en-route
"There's not much more frustrating than spending 10 minutes getting to my fare, only to have them cancel the ride. I end up wasting a lot of valuable time when that happens."

—Lyft and Uber driver

5) Sitting in the front
"It's distracting."

—Uber driver

6) Lack of drive-thru courtesy
"I wish passengers who ask that I stop at a fast-food drive-thru would offer to buy me something. I usually turn them down (I've accepted a water once), but it just feels like common courtesy."

—Lyft and Uber driver

7) Being entitled, belligerent drunks
"I'm a sober person getting you home. I'm on your team, not your servant. A 'please' goes a long way."

—Lyft and Uber driver

cool calling people
"I wish passengers wouldn't call people in my car or make unnecessary call, I turn the radio off so they can hear better and then I'm just awkwardly eavesdropping. Just text."

—Lyft and Uber driver

9) Not wearing your seat belt
"I wish passengers would put their seat belts on. It's still a car. You can still die."

—Lyft and Uber driver

10) Touching
"Please don't touch me. Ever. At all. That's super uncomfortable. Don't mistake my cheerful demeanor for flirting. I'm just a nice human."

—Lyft and Uber driver

11) Cramming people in
"Stop asking to fit more people in this car than it can legally fit."

—Lyft and Uber driver

12) Changing the music
"I always hated when people would change the radio station or try to play their own music without asking first. It's pretty distracting to have a passenger you don't know reach across the front console to mess with your media settings."

—Uber driver

13) Not knowing where you are going
"Many drunk and high passengers don't know where they are or where they are going."

—Lyft driver

14) Not moving the pin to exactly where you want to be picked up
"If someone is on the back side of a property when they request a ride but want to be picked up in front, this causes Navigation to send you possibly to the next street over. Google maps may say that a person is miles away from their actual location. So it is up to the passenger to confirm that the location is correct, but many don't."

—Lyft driver

15) Drinking in the car
"Don't get into my car with open alcoholic drinks."

—Anonymous driver

16) Leaving trash behind
"I always hated when people would leave trash in my car."

—Uber driver

17) Being demanding
"Don't expect water and candy on a $5 ride that I drove across town for."

—Lyft driver

Foreign Affairs / Gambian President Makes U-turn, Rejects Election Results order fresh election by centvin008(m): 8:42am On Dec 10, 2016
Gambian leader Yahya Jammeh has rejected the result of the presidential election held earlier this month, a week after admitting defeat.

He said he now recommends fresh and transparent elections which will be officiated by a God-fearing and independent electoral commission

Speaking on state TV, Mr Jammeh cited “abnormalities” in the vote and called for fresh elections.
Mr Jammeh, who came to power in a coup in 1994, suffered a shock defeat to Adama Barrow, who won more than 45% of the vote.

The US “strongly condemned” Mr Jammeh’s statement.

“This action is a reprehensible and unacceptable breach of faith with the people of The Gambia and an egregious attempt to undermine a credible election process and remain in power illegitimately,” said state department spokesman Mark Toner.

Mr Barrow, a property developer, is due to take office in late January. Mai Ahmad Fatty, the head of his transition team, told Reuters they were “consulting on what to do”, adding: “As far as we are concerned, the people have voted. We will maintain peace and stability and not let anyone provoke us into violence.”

The Gambia is the smallest country on mainland Africa, with a population of fewer than two million.

Mr Jammeh said that he now rejected the results of the election “in totality”.
“After a thorough investigation, I have decided to reject the outcome of the recent election,” Mr Jammeh said.

“I lament serious and unacceptable abnormalities which have reportedly transpired during the electoral process.

“I recommend fresh and transparent elections which will be officiated by a God-fearing and independent electoral commission.”
