Politics9th NASS: Give South-east, Kalu Dep Senate President - APC Chieftain To Buhari, by CGMedia(op): 3:39am On Jun 05, 2019
A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State, Chief Daniel Chiemezie Okeke, has expressed his views on the zoning arrangement of the leadership positions in the Ninth National Assembly, particularly the Senate.

Speaking with Igbere TV on Tuesday, Chief Okeke, who is also the CEO of Swiss Spirit Hotel, said the APC should do the needful by zoning the Deputy Senate President position to the Southeast, in the interest of fairness, equity and justice.

According to him, the Igbos, being among the three major ethnic groups in Nigeria, deserve to have at least the Deputy Senate Presidency.

He called on President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently zone the Deputy Senate Presidency to the South-East.

Okeke said, “This is the time for the APC led government to prove to Nigerians that we are one Nigeria where equity, fairness and justice is practiced in totality. It is not in contention that we have three major ethnic group in Nigeria, the Hausas, Igbos and Yorubas. Anything short of senate president or deputy senate president for the Igbos would be highly resisted.

“We have always known our dear president to be a man of his word. So with humility and honesty, we urge mr president to do the needful by either zoning the senate or deputy senate president to the South-East.”

Speaking further, Chief Okeke said the Easterners have contributed a lot towards the development of the nation, and should be considered in the country’s leadership, specifically the Ninth Assembly.

He lamented the charade witnessed in the outgoing Eight Assembly, and insisted that Senator-elect Dr. Orji Kalu is needed in the Ninth Assembly leadership to bring sanity to NASS.

While acknowledging the antecedents of Kalu in the political space, the APC scribe urged returning senators and senators-elect to support the former Abia governor, for the sake of building a robust NASS leadership committed to Nigerians.

“His Excellency, Dr Orji Uzor Kalu should be considered as the Senate or Deputy Senate President having won his full constituency in the Senate, House of Representatives and State House of Assembly election.

“Besides, he has the charisma and as an accomplished international businessman, his wealth of experience is highly needed to move the country forward,” he added.

PoliticsSupreme Court Fixes New Date To Deliver Osun Guber Polls Appeal (See Date) by CGMedia(op):
The Supreme Court in Abuja will on Monday, June 10, 2019 deliver judgment in the separate appeals by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate in the Osun governorship election, Senator Ademola Adeleke, against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)

Igbere TV reports that Adeleke is challenging the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate, Governor Gboyega Oyetola, in the 2018 Osun State governorship election.

Igbere TV recalls that the Appeal Court had earlier ruled in favour of Governor Oyetola, after he had appealed the first judgement of the Election Petitions Tribunal, which ruled in favour of Senator Adeleke.

Recall that INEC had declared Oyetola and the APC the winner of the Osun State governorship election on the basis of the cumulative results of the September 22, 2018 main election and the September 27, 2018 supplementary poll.

Earlier on May 30, the PDP had won an appeal of the April 2 judgement by Justice Othman Musa of the FCT High Court, Bwari, which voided Adeleke’s candidacy for the election on the grounds that he was not qualified, having not possessed valid secondary school certificate.

The court had also declared Adeleke ineligible to contest the election on the grounds that he forged his secondary school credentials submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in 2018.

But upturning the judgment on Thursday, May 30, Justice Emmanuel Agim of the Appeal Court held that the suit, having failed to be filed within 14 days after Adeleke’s Form C.F001 was submitted to INEC or 14 days after his name was published as a candidate in the September 2018 election, the suit filed before the FCT High Court, by virtue of section 285 of the constitution had become statute-barred.

Justice Agim also held that the failure of the FCT High Court to deliver its verdict within 60 days of the filing of the suit had rendered the lower court’s judgment a nullity.

The Court also held the affidavit evidence of the West African Examination Council and result ledger attached to it showed that Adeleke was not a dropout but actually sat the May 1981 examination of the body at Muslim Grammar School, Ede.

Justice Agim held that by virtue of section 177 of the constitution, by merely taking the examination and without passing any paper, Adeleke was qualified to contest the governorship election.

He, therefore, faulted the claim that Adeleke forged the West African Examination Council (WAEC) certificate he presented to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to secure clearance for the gubernatorial election.

HealthMan Insists Wife Must Deliver At Home, Locks Her Up As She Bled To Death (photos by CGMedia(op): 10:02pm On Jun 04, 2019
A man identified as Mr. Samuel Chidi, a graduate of Law from Ebonyi State University, Abakilikk, has been accused of ‘deliberate criminal negligence’ towards his wife, Igbere TV reports.

According to a social media user who shared the story with Igbere TV, Chidi, a resident of Diamond Point Junction, Chinedu Ogah Avenue, Abakaliki, had watched his wife who had previously delivered twice though caesarean section, battle with labour pains in their room and bled to death.

“Chidi could have easily contacted a Nurse who was also living in the same compound but instead left the poor woman locked up in the room with a patent medicine dealer who, to make matters worse, administered improper injections, dragged out the baby to the ground while the husband pinned her legs down, collected the blood, the baby's placenta and hid in his room while leaving the agonizing mother to bleed till death," our source alleged.

It was gathered that the incident occurred around 11pm, and Chidi did not inform anyone in the compound or any member of the deceased family until the afternoon of the following day when a neighbour, a Nurse who came to check on Mrs. Nkechi, the late woman, learnt of the incident.

“She insisted that her corpse be deposited immediately at the morgue for proper attention while the lucky newborn baby be moved into intensive care,” the source said.

Igbere TV gathered that the family of the deceased was contacted soon after and dismayed by the negligent conduct of the man who had sworn to love, cherish and protect their daughter till death do them part, withdrew the body and proceeded to dump it in the man’s compound “for him to do with it as he had presumably purposed.”

“But for the quick intervention of members of the Nigeria Police from Kpirikpiri Station, who were on Patrol duty, got wind of the incident and prevailed on the situation.”

Igbere TV learnt that the corpse was returned to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki mortuary while the suspect was placed under police custody pending investigation and trial.

“The circumstances surrounding the death of Mrs. Nkechi remain largely a mystery to her neighbours and family, and the general public is hopeful that the Justice Department of the State will leave no stone unturned in their attempt to unravel it and bring those culpable to book,” a family source told Igbere Tuesday night.

May her soul rest in peace. Amen!

PoliticsMore Trouble For Gbajabiamila As Court Summons Him On Election Eve by CGMedia(op): 6:38pm On Jun 04, 2019
A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, has summoned Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, Majority Leader of the House of Representatives and top contender for the Speakership position in the Ninth Assembly, over a suit filed against him by the Action Peoples Party (APP).

He is expected to appear June 10, a day to the first session of the Ninth Assembly and constitution of House leadership.

Igbere TV reports that the APP had asked the court to disqualify Gbajabiamila from the Speakership race over alleged perjury.

The APP led by Mr Ikenga Ugochinyere, who doubles as Spokesman of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), had accused Gbajabiamila of committing perjury in the CF001 form he submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in 2003, 2007, 2011, 2015 and 2019.

The party said while Gbajabiamila, a lawyer, was convicted by the Supreme Court of Georgia, US, and sentenced to 36 months disbarment for fraud, lied to INEC that he had never been convicted for any crime.

The lawmaker waTos said to have duped Barry Hadyatu, one of his clients, by receiving her insurance claims without her authority.

PoliticsAnother $267 Million Abacha Loot Seized In Virgin Islands by CGMedia(op): 4:04pm On Jun 04, 2019
Another fresh loot of former Nigerian dictator, General Sani Abacha, has been discovered 21 years after the late Military Head of State, exited power.

The over $267 million traced to the family of the late army general, Igbere TV learnt, was seized from a British Virgin Islands bank and deposited into government coffers in State of Jersey.

The money was a part of more than $300 million stash the Jersey State government said on its website was “laundered through the US banking system by people including President Abacha’s son Mohammed” during the military regime of General Sani Abacha.

“On Friday 31 May 2019 US$267,751,992.02 was paid into the Civil Asset Recovery Fund,” Jersey State said.

“This fund is managed by the Minister for Treasury and Resources in accordance with the Civil Asset Recovery (International Co-operation) (Jersey) Law 2007, from assets that were previously held by Doraville Properties Corporation.”

A ‘kleptocracy’ initiative launched by the United States Justice Department under Barack Obama in 2014 collected a $500 million once held by the former Nigerian dictator and his cronies.

Abacha who ruled Nigeria between 1993 until his death in 1998, is suspected to have laundered $2.2 billion from the Central Bank of Nigeria through the United States to the Channels Island.

The $267 has been a subject of a legal tussle between Doraville and the US authorities.

The money will be held by the government until authorities in Jersey, the US and Nigeria come to an agreement on how it should be distributed.

Any money that Jersey does keep will be put into the Criminal Confiscation Fund, which is used to pay for a variety of projects.

PoliticsPresidential Election Tribunal: See What Happened In Court On Wednesday by CGMedia(op): 1:13am On May 23, 2019
Presidential Election Tribunal: What Buhari told court about Justice Bulkachuwa before she stepped down

The Presidential Candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Muhammadu Buhari, Wednesday, told the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Abuja that he was not aware that Aliyu Haidar Abubakar, biological son of the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa, campaigned for him during the electioneering period.

According to the President, he only got to know that Abubakar was his supporter after he read a copy of the motion the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

Igbere TV recalls that the PDP and Atiku had filed the motion to disqualify Justice Bulkachuwa from presiding over the five-man panel tribunal that is hearing petitions challenging the declaration that he won the February 23 presidential election.

Buhari, who is the 2nd Respondent in Atiku and PDP’s petition marked CA/PEPT/02/19, claimed that his attention was further drawn to exhibits that contained newspaper cuttings, indicating that Justice Bulkachuwa’s son canvassed for votes in his favour.

However, in his 11-paragraphs written address he filed to support affidavit he lodged to counter Atiku’s motion, President Buhari, insisted that the petitioners failed to prove that Justice Bulkachuwa had in any way, exhibited any form of bias against them since the petition was entered before the tribunal.

Igbere TV reports that Buhari’s affidavit was deposed to by one Kolawole Andrew Aro, a litigation officer in the chambers of President Buhari’s lead counsel, Chief Wole Olanipekun, SAN.

Buhari, who was represented at the tribunal on Wednesday by a team of lawyers led by seven Senior Advocates of Nigeria, SANs, told the Tribunal that he had since his emergence to power, refrained from dabbling into the membership of any judicial panel.

The president said he never interfered with the constitution of any tribunal, “whether the panel is adjudicating on election petitions relating to the office of President, Governor, National or State Assembly, or sitting in any civil or criminal matter howsoever.”

He maintained that Atiku and the PDP, had no reason whatsoever to be apprehensive about the involvement of the Court of Appeal President in the adjudication of their dispute with regards to the outcome of the 2019 presidential election.

On its part, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, which is the 1st Respondent in the matter, through its team of lawyers comprising five SANs led by Mr. Yunuz Uztaz, urged the tribunal to dismiss Atiku and PDP’s motion, contending that it was in breach of section 42 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

INEC argued that the motion was discriminatory in the sense that it sought to disqualify Justice Bulkachuwa on the basis that she was married to a politician.

Noting that many male judicial officers are equally married to politicians, INEC, maintained that granting the instant application would set ”a very dangerous precedent”.

Similarly, the All Progressives Congress, APC, through its team of nine SANs, led by Prince Lateef Fagbemi, accused the PDP and Atiku of engaging in “cheap blackmail”.
