One Mr Okunrobo Osarenren Evans, has been sentenced to seven years imprisonment by a Special Court sitting in Lagos, Igbere TV reports.
This was after the suspect was arraigned before Justice .M. Dada of the Special Offences Court, Ikeja, by the EFCC, Lagos Zonal Office.
The convict was first arraigned in 2017 on a three-count charge bordering on forgery, an offence contrary to Section 363(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.
According to one of the count charges sighted by Igbere TV, Evans in 2009, forged a birth certificate in the name of Okunrobo to commit the offence.
But the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against him by the prosecution, thereby leading to his trial.
During trial, the prosecution counsel, Ufoma Franlin, called four witnesses and tendered several documents that were admitted in evidence by the court.
At the resumed hearing on Wednesday, the prosecution counsel urged the court to impose maximum sentence on the convict on the grounds that the defendant had wasted the time of the court.
However, counsel to the defendant prayed the court to “temper Justice with mercy”, adding that “my client is a first-time offender and has a wife and children to cater for.”
Delivering judgment, Justice Dada said the prosecution had clearly proved its case beyond reasonable doubt with absolute diligence.
Justice Dada, therefore, convicted and sentenced Osarenren to seven years imprisonment on each count.
Igbere TV reports that the sentences are to run concurrently.
Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, has condoled with Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, over the death of her father, Igbere TV reports.
Igbere TV had reported that Okonjo-Iweala, a former Minister of Finance, lost her father, Obi (Prof) Chukwuka Okonjo, on Friday.
Okonjo, who was the Obi of Ogwashi-Uku in Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State, died in the United States, aged 91.
Reacting to the development in a statement sighted by Igbere TV on his official Facebook page, Okowa, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governor, wrote;
“My prayers are with the former Minister of Finance, Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala; her family; and the people of Ogwuashi Uku, over the passing of HRM Prof. Chukwuka Okonjo, the father of Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala and Obi of Ogwuashi Uku.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has just won the first round of preliminary judgment in the ongoing ruling of the Presidential Tribunal, Igbere TV reports.
This comes as the Tribunal sitting in Abuja, on Tuesday, held that the petition of Atiku and the PDP seeking to nullify President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election was validly and competently filed.
Igbere TV recalls that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had lodged the suit challenging the petition of Atiku and PDP against Buhari and the APC.
INEC had urged the Tribunal to strike out the list of witnesses and evidence that were attached to Atiku’s petition, insisting that it was not validly signed by a legal practitioner.
It alleged that the name on the NBA seal that Atiku’s lawyer, Dr. Livy Uzoukwu (SAN) affixed on the petition dated March 18, was different from the name he filled in the Supreme Court roll for lawyers.
But in its ruling on Tuesday, the Tribunal said it was satisfied that Atiku’s lawyer was validly called to the Nigerian Bar, insisting that INEC’s petition lacked merit.
According to the Tribunal, it was evident that Uzoukwu was called to Bar in 1982, served as the Attorney General of Imo State between 1994 and 1996, and conferred the SAN rank in 1999.
The Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal has just dismissed an application by Atiku and PDP, challenging President Muhammadu Buhari’s academic qualifications, Igbere TV reports.
Igbere TV recalls that Atiku Abubakar and the PDP had prayed the Tribunal to upturn Buhari’s victory in the February 23 presidential election, over his controversial WAEC certificate.
But, the Tribunal in its ruling on Tuesday, read by Justice Mohammed Garba held that the petition was incompetent, lacked merit; and therefore dismissed it.

Management of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Ekiti State, has ordered the immediate proscription of Student Union activities till further notice, Igbere TV reports.
The management also ordered the shut down of the university and academic activities indefinitely, asking the students to vacate their halls of residence.
Igbere TV learned that the order is as a result of Tuesday’s incident that led to the death of a student of the school, in which some cars in the governor's wife convoy were reportedly destroyed.
The latest development was disclosed in a special announcement on Voice 89.9FM Tuesday night, monitored by Igbere TV Ekiti State correspondent, Adeyinka.

Xenophobia: S'African Govt Tells Ambassadors How To Respond To Questions
South African Ambassadors in different countries across the globe, have reportedly been instructed to “stick to a script” when asked about xenophobic attacks in their country, Igbere TV has learnt.
The ambassadors were said to have been instructed to respond to questions in a specific way and relay the government’s “blanket condemnation” of the attack, in their respective places of assignment.
A South African newspaper, Sunday Times, reports that the diplomats were instructed to condemn the violence “in the strongest possible terms” in response to the outrage from African nations to avoid “people saying what they want to and giving in to provocation”.
The newspaper reported on Sunday that President Cyril Ramaphosa played the same “script” when he received Ahmed Rufai Abubakar (President Buhari’s special envoy to the country) on the attack of Nigerians in recent xenophobic violence in the country.
Ramaphosa was said to have insisted when he met Abubakar that the recent attacks in the country were acts of violence (caused by foreign drug dealers) and not xenophobia.
The South African President was said to have “pushed back” when the envoy related President Buhari’s concerns to him, while insisting that the Nigerian Government must do something about its citizens who commit crimes and live illegally in his country.
Meanwhile, Igbere TV had reported that Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Geoffrey Onyeama, last week, said some South African government officials were encouraging xenophobia attacks in their country.
Onyeama was reacting to a statement credited to his South African counterpart, Naledi Pandor, who said in an interview that Nigerians in the country mostly deal in drugs and harm its citizens.
Pandor had also asked the Nigerian Government to help South Africa rid its country of drug dealers and human traffickers from Nigeria.
“It is precisely this kind of outrageous stigmatization of a people from senior government officials that fuel xenophobia and embolden criminals,” Oyeama had responded to Pandors interview.
