The nation’s security system was thrown into another serious embarrassment on Monday as a man suspected to be mentally deranged attacked former President Olusegun Obasanjo at the Presidential Wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.



The incident occured at about 8am, when the unnamed suspect forced open the door of a car conveying Obasanjo from the airport and jumped into the vehicle. Obasanjo, who had just arrived from the airport from a trip, was being driven in a convoy out of the presidential wing when he was attacked.



According to eyewitnesses, the alleged attacker sneaked up to the car in which Obasanjo was riding when it slowed down to join the road linking the international airport with the old domestic terminal. After jumping into the car, the suspected attacker was said to have grabbed Obasanjo.



THE PUNCH learnt that it took the timely intervention of Air Force officers and security aides attached to Obasanjo to save the former president from harm. He was later surrounded off by a team of security men.



The attacker, who appeared to be in his forties, could not say exactly what prompted him to attack the former general. The alleged attacker was taken to the military commander’s office at the airport and later transferred to the airport’s police station.



The Commissioner of Police, Airport Command, Mr. Chris Ola, confirmed the incident on the telephone.



He said, “The incident was a security breach. We have commenced an investigation into the incident to ascertain if there were some people behind the attack.



“We can’t ascertain if the man is a lunatic becauise you can’t call somebody a lunatic unless a medical excamination proves.”we will take him for medical examination tomorrow (today).”



Before the incident, the suspect was said to have been wandering aimlessly around the airport.

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Hafiz Ringim, on Monday in London described the Police Mobile Force as the most bastardised and cannibalised outfit.



Ringim said in an interview with the Europe correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria that the unit was over-staffed. He noted that this informed the recent downsizing of the PMF.



Ringim, who was recently confirmed as the 15th indigenous IG, is in London on a three-day working visit with the Minister of Police Affairs, Alhaji Adamu Waziri.



“In recent years, it has been the most bastardised and most cannibalised outfit; every rogue, vagabond, unauthorised person wants to be seen with a lorry load of riot policemen hanging around his entourage. We cannot afford that,” he said.



Ringim said the security of the country was not for private individuals alone, adding that every Nigerian was entitled to police protection. He said the police high command embarked on the downsizing of the PMF in order to audit its strength.



He noted that the downsizing was also aimed at posting riot policemen to appropriate operational bases at the various police stations.



“We are not unmindful of the fact that we need to have a striking unit. At the end of the exercise, we shall have the original PMF as a striking unit and the VIP protection unit,” Ringim added.



According to the IG, the unit will provide security to government officials and VIPs as authorised by law.



The IG said the police would not tolerate situations where some individuals abused police protection during elections.



He condemned situations were some politicians, who enjoyed police protection, used them to perpetrate havoc during or after elections.



“If we must have free and fair elections, we must withdraw these policemen and we are doing it and we shall do it,” Ringim said.



He also denied calling for the scrapping of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.



“Our position is that the job of the Nigeria Police Force, as contained in the 1999 Constitution, is very clearly stated that there shall be one police force for the Federal Republic of Nigeria.



“What we are now seeing with the emergence of the NSCDC is something that looks counter to what was established by the constitution,” he said.



Ringim, however, called for a revisit of the Act establishing the NSCDC, adding that when put side by side, “one is certainly trying to override the other and the constitution in this regard should be supreme.

{ كَذَلِكَ وَقَدْ أَحَطْنَا بِمَا لَدَيْهِ خُبْراً }

So [it was], in other words, the situation was as We have stated; and We encompassed whatever pertained to him, that is, what Dhū’l-Qarnayn possessed in the way of machinery, men and otherwise, in knowledge.

{ حَتَّىٰ إِذَا بَلَغَ مَطْلِعَ ٱلشَّمْسِ وَجَدَهَا تَطْلُعُ عَلَىٰ قَوْمٍ لَّمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُمْ مِّن دُونِهَا سِتْراً }

until, when he reached the rising of the sun, the place where it rises, he found it rising on a folk, namely, Negroes (zanj), for whom We had not provided against it, that is, [against] the sun, any [form of] cover, in the way of clothing or roofing, as their land could not support any structures; they had underground tunnels into which they would disappear at the rising of the sun and out of which they would emerge when it was at its highest point [in the sky].

So Brothers and sisters lets try together to rejuvenate our Faith in the upcoming Holy month of Dhul Hijjah, especially the 1st Ten days. Lets try to do more Ibadah in whatever way we can:-
1. Fasting, or
2. Praying Tahajjud at night, or
3. Reciting Quran more frequently and for longer duration, or
4. Atleast increasing the number of Dikhrs daily. or
5. Giving more sadaqa(charity).

Chapter18- verse 88,

{ وَأَمَّا مَنْ آمَنَ وَعَمِلَ صَالِحاً فَلَهُ جَزَآءً ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ وَسَنَقُولُ لَهُ مِنْ أَمْرِنَا يُسْراً }

But as for him who believes and acts righteously, he shall have the fairest reward, namely, Paradise (the annexation construction [jazā’u l-husnā, ‘the fairest reward’] is explicative; a variant reading has jazā’an al-husnā, ‘[he shall have] as a requital that which is fairest’; al-Farrā’ said that this accusative [reading of jazā’an] is [intended] as an explanation [of the nature of the requital] by way of attribution [to ‘that which is fairest’]; and we shall speak to him mildly in our command’, that is to say, we shall command him with what he will find easy [to bear].

Inna lillah wa Inna Ilaihi Raji'un.
