i am contemplating doing some safety courses next year..
If you got indepth knowledge in your field, look for a way to factor in a related experience in your CV.

Its best you apply for jobs here from naija.
In the mean time try get a PGDE. If you still got nothing by then, you move over

What would you do under harsh working conditions? You are stuck, you cannot get your passport until after a year and If you do, what is the possibility of getting a job within 28 days?
To avoid being at the mercy of your employer, you can just get your own visa.

When Yuh boss pisses you off, you just hiss and walk out

Yes. And they love owning you.
My friend came down on a resident visa. He's bn here less than a year but his employers are advising him to cancel his visa and be under theirs.
Just so that they can own him.

And no, the employers are not Arabs, they are Americans

Three weeks later i heard from the agency. I was given date time and venue for the interview. I wasn't sure what/how to prepare. I just did some editing on my cv and made the journey to Dublin.

The interview was nothing I've never experienced in my life. It lasted all of about 20 minutes. It was mostly chit chat and some questions like; how would you decorate your classroom? how would you manage a child with ADD (attention deficit disorder)? what are your classroom management skills? what if a student is dyslexic? are you aware of the cultural reservations in the middle east? have you been to the middle east before?

Mehuh Did you miss the part where i said I was from Nigeria? In Nigeria we have Islam and Christan majority. I am a Christian, but have lived in the north all my life. So I know about Islam. In Nigeria, corporal punishment is very illegal. In fact I.....bla bla bla. And so interview ended with the promise of you'll hear from us. Na so I go house.

Two weeks later, I got an email asking me to make copies of the following documents available - transcript, highest degree, birth cert etc These documents should be attested at your countries ministry of of this and that. Please note that the ministry of education, UAE, would not bear the cost of these attestations. And then the sweet part kiss pls note that this offer of employment kiss is subject to your being able to satisfactorily complete reference checks and the employment requirements set by the Ministry of Labour...

Mehuh Offer of employment?? Just like that?? A few days later I was on my way to naija to get my affairs in order.

Can you date someone from ur home country
And can you apply for permanent residence after 2 years
There's no permanent anything here.
The longest contract you get is 3years after which it can be renewed.

You're free to date and marry and have kids.

Your employers would tell you if they wanna keep your passport or not.

Imagine you're working where you had access to huge sums and your passport wt you. What stops you from handing over the cash to your cohort and fleeing the country?

These employers are just tryna err on the side of caution and i tell you no one would hold your passport against your will. If you decide after 3 months to leave any job, your passport would be returned. But your employer would report you, and you'll be placed on a work ban

I strongly disagree. I think you trivialize what is going on concerning workers’ rights in some of these Arab countries by saying there is slavery everywhere. No, real slavery is right around you and you know it. There have been numerous NGOs set up with petitions stacked about this same issue.

The people who haven’t gone home in Europe or America never want to leave in comparison and it is never because of an employer or some employment ‘contract’ with passport seized.

Your agent and employer released your passport back to you but how would another person tell from their country of origin who would release or permanently hold on to theirs?

Anyway, good luck with everything. Hope you are really as free as you make it seem. I’ll continue reading.
Dude,
I still stand my ground, there's slavery everywhere. Its now up to you to decide whether or not you wanna put up with it.

In naija theres been cases of people who work in factories owned by Lebanese/Indians/Chinese. They get locked overnight in these factories and there's a fire outbreak and there's no exit.
There are people in naija who work 18hours in a day for peanuts. These ones have a choice but they still do these jobs. When they manage to leave, other people take it

The UAE is not Oman or Saudi Arabia or any other extreme middle east state. Its not even Nigeria. Over here. workers right are protected here but people just choose to settle for less

I personally would never turn in my passport to any employer

Can you throw more light on CACHE certification. Duration and cost thanks
Cache pronounced cash.
Duration is one year, give or take. Costs around 1.5m naira. Not done in Nigeria. You might get it in SA
TravelRe: My Experience Living And Working In The UAE by Champagnemami(op): 3:27pm On Dec 09, 2019
@doitforyou

Yea you get thrown in jail for some 3 months.

You usually face ds reality at the point of exit at the airport. So maybe at that point in time they might just decide to let you go. In which case a life ban will be placed on you. And I'm sure you know what that means even for visa applications to other countries.

But lets say the police busted you in a wrong situation like using the public transport and not logging in your card, then straight up to jail first, after 3months deportation, and then blacklist/ban
TravelRe: My Experience Living And Working In The UAE by Champagnemami(op): 2:09pm On Dec 09, 2019
@kelechi50

There's slavery everywhere.
Best bet is to stay in your home country.

You think its all rosy in Europe and the Americas.

Yeah granted no one holds your passport but you see instances where people live in advanced countries and dare not make a move out of the country, stuck there for even up to 10yrs cos its a requirement for papers

That's if you have the money to make a case against them. grin.

I see no reason why an employer should withhold one's passport.
If an employer insists on keeping your passport, you are very free to decline and walk away. It is not by force.

You don't need money to make a case. Simply walk up into a police station.

Over here people cower at d mention of police

CptCharlesVane:
“walk up to your boss and tell him you no do again...” and if he doesn’t return the passport like the case of hundred of videos of Arab bosses out there? Why does it have to be one year? And who decides how long? what if the boss decides it’s 5 years or even 10?

Is your passport with your employer?
Most job contracts have a 2year duration.
After one year you're entitled to a paid vacation that includes to and fro flight to your home country. Many of this contract require that you work at least a year b4 you can resign.

In my case, I work as a teacher and I can only resign at the end of an academic session.

Anything short of this is a breach, and can result in a work ban.

If your employer refuses to give you your passport and you're able to make a case against him, he can be blacklisted and deported too. The UAE is not that lawless

I have my passport with me.

It is illegal here in the UAE to withhold an employees passport. Your passport is your personal property.
Only those kpangolo employers hold on to passport and desperation is why people work for them
