PanicButton:
For the ladies, only shoot your shots at men who gives you this semblance of maturity and foresight. The others, have intentions which are vehemently against your self interest. For guys, once that opportunity comes your way, be delicate and responsible. If you only want to get in between their pants, let them know and they would be deeply indebted to you. If you are unsure, communicate as well.

Hehe
I hope they hear

The story is sweet but...

...she seemed desperate and dude may take advantage of that, I hope he doesn't though.

The narrative should've been edited a bit and some details redacted so as not to make the guy feel like he is doing her a favor by marrying her.

Yea she did say a lot. Too much even.
But then again her actions were a lot too. She kept bringing up d issue of relationship and was crying when d guy wouldn't budge.

The ring was d goal. She didn't seem to care what happens afterwards

Some shots backfires and the outcome...terrible.

True.
While it depends on d guy, it depends more on d lady.
Shooting shots is for strong mature ladies who know what self love/respect is.

That is only when you can manage d fallout

@efe24, the guy with d Msc in architecture, the guy with Msc in geology, sorry can remember your monikers, will edit when i do.

Pls get a pgde, run those courses safety courses @kellycute mentioned and you have a good chance here. Lots of options to choose from.

For the English grads, English is a hot cake here. Will keep you informed on what liscences and certifications to come armed with. July/August is the best time to drop here if you looking at a teaching career.

Teaching here aint easy tho. The kids are ogbanjes and abikus. I mean that literally. It's why they pay you much so that when you feel like beating any one up, you'll remember what that would mean for your account balance and then call yourself to order

Coming down to Dubai on a visit or resident visa is something that should be weighed carefully. Each has its upsides and downsides.

Some companies would not employ you on a resident visa while others go rush you, even within the same sector. For instance, the UAE MOE would not even consider you for employment unless you're on a 3 months visa or lower. Meanwhile other schools give priority to people on resident/spousal visa.
When you're on a visit visa, the moment you step into this place, you're under pressure to get a job, you have only 90 days so you'll be restless. And some employers will not touch you with a long pole like 70 days into that 3months. They want people who still have time on their visa. With a resident visa you don't have this problem. Problem is, this might cause you to become lazy and slow. You might just step out of your house one morning and decide not to job hunt cos the sun is too hot, afterall you have two years.

Medical care in Dubai is very expensive. If you have cause to enter into a hospital and leave with some drugs, you're looking at like 500aed. Imagine if you now have an emergency that requires surgery, then you're Looking at millions of naira. No matter how small a job you do here you have access to medical insurance, although sometimes you have to make some equity contribution on drugs. For most big organizations, you have quality medical insurance that can even cover treatment abroad. For most organizations tho, could even be all, if you're not under their visa, you can't access this insurance. That's one downside to working with a resident/spouse visa.

**resident visa comes with its own insurance but it ain't comprehensive**

When coming into Dubai, take care to calculate your expenses and have extra for miscellaneous and other contigencies. Find out how much accommodation, feeding, transportation would cost. Transportation is very important. If you're hoping to land a job fast, you cant rely on your bus card on which you're charged like 3aed per drop. You're even just coming into town so you're not familiar with bus no and routes and even if you keep asking questions, you'll still get confused. So you have to be ready to spend a lot on taxi, taxis are expensive. An hours ride could cost you 12k naira.

So lets say 3mmonths comes to an end and you ain't landed a job yet, what next? You returning home? Or you calling up your agent? The latter is gonna cost you.

So whatever you do have enough cash to last you at least 5months or have a strong support at home to always top you up. Otherwise if you're female, you'll start whoring around. If you're male, you're come on nairaland to talk about how Dubai is the worse thing that can happen to anybody. There's a third option tho, take up a 150naira job and be dissatisfied for the next two years probably, even working for a silly Bangali, who forgets to pay you at the end of the month.

Also, ensure your agent ain't your only contact in Dubai. Ordinarily, he should pick you up at the airport, help you settle down and then guide you. But don't be surprised when you land and call him, he tells you "thank God for journey mercies" and switches off his phone. What now?? ALWAYS have enough cash, cos in this desert, its everyman for himself

Mcowubaba:

I was with you throughout the thread until you made this point.
We all understand that what works for Mr A may not work for Mr B, heck we have billionaires in this same Nigeria people are dying of hunger, so using that logic is not always ideal.
UAE and most Arab countries are generally not advisable as they have certain human rights violation issue, massive racism, archaic and Islamic laws

Your class being made up of 98% Americans/British DOES NOT negate that fact that America (USA) is a better country for a Nigerian immigrant than UAE

India is a shithole country and any reasonable person will not be planning on going to India for greener pastures, who the hell does that
In life there are always exceptions, and your friends who have hit it big in India are amongst those few exception.

When we talk about immigration, talk about empirical evidence, longitudinal and documentated facts of people LEGALLY making it or settling down well in Countries, and USA, UK, Canada and few EU countries are on top of the list of such countries. UAE is NOT on that list.

You can't even hear about any company even talking about seizing, holding your passport in the countries I mentioned, I believe you don't understand the level of insanity for a company to even suggest such nonsense.

Companies in the countries I mentioned also SPONSOR their employees work permit/visa too and are at the same risk of employees resigning or running away, UAE compainies that suggest this act of holding your passport are simply silly.

Finally, I never said countries like USA, Canada and so on are beds of roses, but whatever suffering or agony an immigrant passes through, there are very stringent laws against human right abuse, racism, and generally this countries have 21st century modernised laws.

I have lived in Abu Dhabi for 4 months, and visited Dubai a few times it's certainly a beautiful place, but certainly not an ideal destination for a Nigerian economic immigrant, I would say it's 2nd option to consider if USA, Canada etc are not feasible

Yea right. There is less to zero racism in America which is why you guys have the black lives matter movement. Lets not even begin to talk about the security problems.

Each one of us has reason and target for immigrating, short term or long term. Some do to earn a living, others for citizenship. But one thing is common, its all about the good life, quality life.

From the start of the article i mentioned homelessness and overstay which are direct outcomes of no job, so what negative anything was i hiding at first?

The 'freedom' you don't get to enjoy in the UAE is no different from what you get serving/living in a place like sokoto, zamfara. Its a Muslim country, so naturally you can't expect to live like you're in America.

I've lived here two years. In my first year I saved 15m naira. How long would it take an RN in the US/UK to save same? By the second year, I begun my masters program and ran some courses, so less savings.

For the first time in my life my supposedly useless Nigerian certificate is worth something.

I come online to share the story and somehow I'm claiming UAE is a paradise?

Y'all need to take a chill pill. Seriously

You people didn't lemme finish my story. I would have gone on to tell how people stay here for even up to a year without a job, surviving on stipends from home. How some borrowed money to move over, ended up with 80k naira jobs and creditors back home are threatening their parents. And I would have gone on to mention what a decent salary here should be. And how much you must earn before your spouse can come live here with you.

But then I've said many people come here with little or no information of what's truly at stake. Relying only on info got from the agents who are more concerned with their commission and end up making bogus claims and job promises.

This still doesn't change the fact that there are people making it here big time especially in certain sectors. Dubai labor market belongs to professionals and I did mention that here is not like Europe/America where people are able to do even up to 3 odd jobs a day.

And no I'm not working for 500k a month. I work for the government ministry of education. People whose annual salary is my monthly in Nigeria are able to lead very stable lives.

The middle east in recent years has been the perfect destination for qualified teachers world over with the UAE topping the list. That your friends are in Dubai living in squalor because of hurried poor decisions and a lack of opportunity doesn't change that fact. And yes the sweetest catch of Dubai earnings is that its tax free.

The health sector is also very juicy. Nigerian doctors here earn 20,000 dirhams with 2 years of getting their liscences. This is aside the 2/1 bedroom flat accommodation if you're married/single, school fees allowance for two kids, to and fro flight on a yearly vacation to home country etc

There are engineers here in ADNOC, a big employer, earning 35k aed on a monthly. Yet in this same Dubai you see my nigerian engineer graduate brothers working as baristas for 1500aed. The difference between these two is just one or two certifications that the latter did not know to get

This dichotomy is what i was hoping i could bridge by sharing my experience but some oversabi people would not lemme be.

A lot of emphasis is being made about withholding of passport as if that’s the primordial issue. While it is true that passport are personal property and should be in the custody of it owner at all times, I think it’s diversionary and even unnecessary to the intent of this post. That notwithstanding, I strongly advise that no one should travel to Dubai for greener pasture as there’s nothing for you there. UAE is as useless and tough like the Nigeria you intend to elope from. You work under harsh conditions for peanuts and for most they can’t even afford a decent room without sharing with people to reduce cost and for many they are average of 5 sharing a room.

I have close friends in Dubai whose story are all same and are living in squalor. Please for your own good avoid UAE, India, Russia, Cambodia, SA and Indonesia by every means possible. Better retire to your village and farm than embark on a journey to any of the aforesaid countries. Don’t say you weren’t warned.

Lol
People just dont understand that its not easy anywhere. Currently, the US is d best place to hustle. So many side/odd jobs especially with the immigration restrictions. But in that same US, there are many Nigerians who can't afford a ticket home. Heck, some can't even send 20k for a family emergency in Naija.

In my school we're 80% Britain, Canada, America, Australia. The rest 20% are Arab, Africans, others. These 80% are coming from countries that you all are running to.

I earn more than a teacher on my grade level in the US. These ones use some considerable sum of their salary for taxes. Whereas mine is tax free.

But in this same Dubai, you find people with same qualifications as mine doing domestic help work of 150k.

At the end, its about sensitization. Don't just carry bag and say m going to Dubai. What are you coming here to do? Is that d best you can do? Are there better options? Ask questions and arm yourself with info.

That same India you condemned i have friends there who have hit it big. Meanwhile Indians are running into Dubai in droves.

And what's wrong in a shared accommodation? After I got my first pay, i rented a self con of 35k dirhams per annum. After 3 months i did a brain reset and got a shared apartment for 9000 aed per annum. Which means i now save extra 2.6million naira yearly.

That it didn't work for Yuh friends doesn't mean it wont work for others.

So you just take a chill pill and breath
