Jijola: Fantastic sis! Those examples you mentioned are exceptions to the general rule. If you refer to my earlier posts on this thread about this matter, I clearly stated that both Colleges and Universities have exceptions to this general dileneation, and exceptions/variations may also apply from discipline to discipline. That's why a University can offer technical courses for technicians and technologists, and some colleges offer courses in the humanities.Let's come back home to Nigeria: Many Polytechnics now offer courses like Banking and Finance, Accounting and even Mass Communications...this does not make these fields areas for which they were established. Another example, Universities of Technology like FUTA and FUNAAB now offer Humanity courses, despite that they're Universities designated for Agriculture. So there are always exceptions, and they may even be several.
Again, you're right that technicality relates to science and technology. But then, technical also means 'connected with the Skills required for a particular job, sport, art, etc' and ' connected with a particular subject therefore difficult to understand if you do not know about that subject'. So for a discipline to be technical, it just could mean the field requires set practical skills. Hence, you can regard even Art courses as technical e.g. Literature requires some reasoning and writing skills, and employment of literary techniques in writing. Infact, we do say that there are technical areas in every profession...that's the other connotations of the word. Like you have said too, technicality makes use of lots of practice, and that's what Colleges are known for. This does not mean that Universities don't do same, but that's not what they're designed for. I concluded a thesis-based Masters sometime back, and that didn't make me turn to a technologist or technician.I agree that the nature of your discipline may be more practical-prone despite that it's a University programme, it doesn't turn you to a technician or technologist. Remember even an Engineer does not do the work of a technician or technologist, he is merely the brain behind what those guys do. You desing and plan, they execute.Lobatan. You can tell me if this is not how it applies at your own end.
Cheers.
Tuale to you Jijola! cheesy Nigeria is indeed losing a lot of intelligent minds. I bow to your superior knowledge. Topics like this when discussed intelligibly with evidence based facts makes for a truly brilliant discourse.
I think instead of engaging in petty squabbles in this thread, we can all learn from each other. This thread would be doubly educative if we learn to disagree politely in order to agree. Kudos to you bro, I think we both have been enlightened as well as other members of this esteemed thread. smiley

Jijola: Hi there. I think we've agreed that colleges are easier to get into and that college graduates offer cheaper labour.I also mentioned those points earlier. smiley
On the other point about Thesis-based masters and Cousework-based masters, you're right about the former giving practical experience.I also got into a thesis-based programme. Note however that the practical experience in a thesis-based post-graduate programme is to enhance a research. At the end, one's University degree is still to make one a researcher. Moreover, the point raised earlier was not only about practical orientation, but also that colleges deal more with technical areas... Practical is different from technical. I said colleges produce more of technicians and technologists. It's mostly in colleges you find carpentry, drilling, fashion-designing, etc.
And yes, people percive Universities as higher than colleges, but that does not mean that is the official relationship between the two.
You're on point that anyone that has an inssuficient qualification to enter a University should give college a short. But people should also note that once you take the line of a college, you're heading for the field than the boardroom, except you want to combine both college and university degrees. So where someone has qualification for the two, what should determine his choice is his interest. I know peeps here who have qualifications for a Master degree but chose Advanced diplomas and PGDs because they're either heading for the field or they want to switch fields.
On those that make groundbreaking discoveries...Yes, they're mostly from Universities because Universities produce researchers. And researchers make discoveries. That doesn't make them technicians and technologists, which are the major trainings colleges give. But again, there are people who do not even pass through tertiary institutions that make discoveries. Some inventors even dropped out of school.
Note Ma'am, that issues I raise here are not based on sentiments because I don't even have a college qualification, and I don't plan on having one.My academic degrees are obtained from Universities.
Cheers.

I think we agree on several points already. However, there is a certain confusion that arises from the words "technical" and "practical".
While the two differ in a way, you will agree that there is a thin line between the two. Yes, colleges are more technology oriented but unis these days also offer these technical courses. A good example that comes to mind is the Marine Institute of the Memorial University of Newfoundland. It is mostly technology oriented but it is also a university cheesy

When we say unis are not field oriented, I think we are on the verge of committing a serious fallacy. I recently had the opportunity of an MSc thesis in University of Calgary. It may interest you to know that researches there (in this field) is mostly field based. it prepares us to enter the field and take up careers in environmental remediation. Whether you take this opportunity or by pass it for a career in teaching is completely up to you. I mentioned this to show you that unis can also be technical oriented when they choose to. Secondly, 'technical' and 'practical' are sometimes synonymous and can be used interchangably. Then again, depending on the field, 'technical' maybe the wrong choice of word to use. Note that technical refers more to science and technology than it does to arts and social sciences. Bearing this little fact in mind, what can we then say about college courses like 'Literature' 'English' French' Social Services' etc? Do we say they are also technical oriented?

All sentiments aside. Universities are highly regarded over colleges. Has anyone ever wondered why getting admission in universities is so tough? Many people choose colleges because it's very easy to get into. Admission can be given in as little as 4 days in colleges. While universities take as much ad 3-6 months to give admissions. Even at that you are not even sure of being admitted. Sometimes even first class graduates are refused uni admission. In colleges, even a pass can gain you admission. Who wants to wait 3-6 months for admission he's not even sure of? Certainly not Naija peeps! angry

For those saying college is more practice oriented. It appears you're not well informed. Do you know there's such a thing as MSc thesis option and MSc course option. Well, MSc thesis option is practical oriented! You engage in ground breaking researches which is not available in colleges. Pray tell me, has any college in the world made any startling and earth shattering discoveries? The truth is colleges are preparatory grounds to enter universities. wink

Ever wondered why colleges don't have options for higher qualifications? College graduates are in demand simply because they offer cheaper labor compared to uni graduates. This is a system that has come to stay.

Work experience matters a lot too. whether college or uni, try and get valuable work experience related to your field. What matters is not whether one attends uni or college but the quality of education you received coupled with dedication on your part.

My dears, saying colleges are lesser to unis is not meant to riddicle anyone. it is just facts; the status quo. Me I'll be attending a polytechnic (later merged with uni) but it doesn't stop me from saying it the way it is. No sentiments. smiley

If your qualification is not strong and you don't have the stomach for suspense, pls don't waste your time with a uni;go straight for a college. cool
