Politics › Re: IMF to FG: Scale Up Cash Transfers To Poor Nigerians by CheapHomes1: 3:12pm On May 10, 2024 |
grandstar: How has the deregulation of diesel and kerosene helped the poor?
First, they are never scarce. They are also never smuggled across the border. Even if smuggled, the Nigerian government loses nothing.
Secondly, the Naira would probably be trading at 2,500-3,000 to a $1 had the subsidies remained. Government would have to borrow the money to pay for the subsidies. This is inflationary. It also puts pressure on the foreign reserves. It has also prevented overconsumption which would have put extra strain on the foreign reserves.
Third, the privately owned refineries focus on producing diesel. They did not produce petrol as the price is subsidized. Basically, it has encouraged investment in refining these 2 products. Dangote as mighty as his refinery is, has not started supplying petrol. The petrol subsidy acts as a big dis-incentive to refiners. The marketers buy diesel and kerosene from his refinery. For the same to happen for petrol, the federal government first has to pay the market price for petrol and then instruct them to sell at the subsidized price to marketers.
Had all fuel subsidies been removed in the 80s or even 90s, I am sure by now the refining capacity of the country would be around 2m bpd. this is what I asked: subsidy on kerosene and diesel was removed, has it reduced debt, reduced the burden on the poor, provided investments and jobs? how has it benefitted the poor?has nigeria's debt reduced since the removal of subsidy on diesel and kerosene? what was nigeria's debt at the time subsidy on diesel and kerosene were removed and what is nigeria's debt now? how has the no scarcity of diesel and kerosene helped the poor? how does the non smuggling of diesel help the poor? how do you know they are not being smuggled? how are they smuggled? if the FG looses nothing if products are smuggled, why then does it have people at the border to check smuggling? pls where in my question did I ask about price of the dollar? what was the exchange rate at the time subsidy on kerosene and diesel were removed and what is the exchange rate now? what is "overconsumption"? overconsumption of what? which private refineries are you talking about that are focusing on producing diesel? can you pls name them? which investment has been encouraged in producing kerosene and diesel? can you name the investments and the value? what are the jobs that have been produced because subsidy and kerosene were removed and how many jobs were produced? |
