Friday's memorial service began with religious and faith leaders, and ended with eulogies from family and friends. It was long -- about three hours -- but there were moving tributes and remembrances throughout the service. 1. Lonnie Ali Muhammad Ali's widow spoke eloquently of her husband's strength of character and the inspiration his life might be to others. "Muhammad may have challenged his government, but he never ran from it, or from America. He loved this country and he understood the hard choices that are borne of freedom. I think he saw a nation's soul measured by the soul of its people." 2. Rasheda Ali-Walsh Ali-Walsh smiled, and made her family smile, with an endearing tribute to her father. Just as he shook up the world in life, she said, he's still shaking it up in death. "Daddy's looking at us now, right? And saying, 'I told you I was the greatest!' No one compares to you, Daddy." 3. Billy Crystal Comedian and longtime friend Billy Crystal said the first time he met the Champ was in 1974, when he was just getting started as a stand-up comedian and was asked to perform at an event honoring Ali. After finishing his routine, Ali gave him a nickname he'd keep for the rest of his life: "Little brother." 4. President Bill Clinton The final speaker at the memorial service, Clinton remembered Ali's humor, intelligence, natural gifts and determination "to write his own life story." He also drew big applause recalling Ali's lighting of the Olympic torch in Atlanta in 1996, "seeing his hands shake and his legs shake and knowing, by God, he was going to make those last few steps, no matter what it took -- the flame would be lit, the fight would be won, his spirit would be affirmed." 5. Rabbi Michael Lerner Among the religious leaders who spoke was Lerner, a political activist and editor of a progressive Jewish magazine. His remarks were the most political of the afternoon. "The way to honor Muhammad Ali is to be Muhammad Ali today. That means us, everyone here and everyone listening. It's up to us to continue that ability to speak truth to power. We must speak out, refuse to follow the path of conformity to the rules of the game in life. Rabbi Lerner: 'It's up to us' to continue Ali's legacy 6. Attallah Shabazz The eldest daughter of Malcolm X, Attallah Shabazz came close to tears recalling the man who was the last close connection she had to her father. The two men were trusted friends, she said. And though Malcolm X was 16 years older, he still called Ali his "little brother." 7. Rev. Kevin Cosb The Rev. Kevin Cosby, pastor at St. Stephen Church in Louisvilleand president of Simmons College of Kentucky, spoke about Ali's importance in the growth of black pride in the years after Jackie Robinson, Joe Louis, Jesse Lewis and Rosa Parks. Ali took the idea of "somebody-ness to unheard-of heights," he said. "Before James Brown said, 'I'm black and I'm proud,' Muhammad Ali said, 'I'm black and I'm pretty |
The White House said President Barack Obama will not attend Muhammad Ali’s funeral, which coincides with his oldest daughter’s graduation. “They will be attending Malia’s high school graduation ceremony in Washington, DC,” said spokeswoman Jen Friedman. Instead, a close aide “will read a letter from the president and the first lady as part of Friday’s service in Louisville.” |

Relegation threatened Newcastle United have parted ways with coach Steve McClaren, after signing a three-year-deal with former Liverpool and Real Madrid coach Rafael Benitez. The long managerial saga is almost over after Benitez agreed terms with the northern club and is in line to be in charge in time for Newcastle’s league visit to leaders Leicester. Benitez The Newcastle board, led by managing director Lee Charnley, has had several meetings this week as they decided on the future of McClaren and the club. The top brass at St James’ Park are now con fident they have found a suitable replacement for McClaren in Benitez. Newcastle chiefs are hopeful that by acting now they can stop the terrifying decline that has left the club staring the Championship in the face. The 3-1 home defeat to Bournemouth at the weekend was the third successive loss for the Magpies, but Newcastle are still just two points from safety with ten games left. Benitez has the calibre and track record to arrest the decline and get the best out of an under performing squad that is rated as one of the best in the second half of the Premier League table. A non governmental organization known as the Convention on Business Integrity and the Integrity Organization will on Thursday hold a symposium intended to spark debate on how to effectively fund and sustain anti-corruption efforts in Nigeria. The event will hold at the Ladi Kwali Hall, Sheraton Hotel and Towers, Abuja, at 10:30am. A statement by the organizations on Monday said President Muhammadu Buhari’s position on corruption had so far been clear that it is so often seen in his “body language.” “Many perceive this administration’s fight against corruption to be more of the same witch-hunt tactics used by previous administrations to settle political scores. For others, the corruption fight is urgently needed but currently personal, and embodied in President Buhari,” the statement said. It also said for the fight against corruption to be effective and far reaching, there needs to be concrete ways of funding, driving and sustaining anti-corruption efforts in Nigeria that complements the president’s body language. “There needs to be more support from leaders of the business community, all arms of government, civil society and the general public,” the symposium organisers said. “Extensive deliberations on finding an effective Nigerian response to this global problem are now needed. As a former EFCC Chairman once noted, “if Nigeria does not kill corruption, corruption will kill us.” The special guest of honour at the event is Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, while Itse Sagay, a professor of law and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, who also currently serve as the Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee on Corruption, will chair the symposium. The statement added that other notable speakers would include organisations and individuals involved in anti- corruption work. “It is anticipated the event will have in attendance representatives/decision makers/stakeholders in key organizations involved in or affected by anti-corruption work in Nigeria including donor agencies, international and local financial institutions, anti-corruption agencies, media houses (local & international), civil society, local philanthropic foundations, the private sector and the National Assembly. “We hope that this programme, in addition to sensitizing and proffering viable solutions to the issue, will also stimulate reflection and discourse by all stakeholders on the rationale for funding and sustaining anti-corruption work in Nigeria,” organisers said. |
London - A British man was on Wednesday found guilty of raping five women he met through the US Internet dating service match.com, which he was allowed to use despite complaints to the website from his victims. Derby Crown Court in central England heard that father-of-three Jason Lawrance, 50, contacted thousands of women on match.com using the profile names KeepItStraightToday and StraightMan_Looking. Police described Lawrance, who was also found guilty of attempting to rape and sexually assaulting two other women, as a "sexual predator". Four of Lawrance's victims complained to match.com, but the court heard that site administrators told one of the complainants that they could not take action because he had not sent abusive messages. He was arrested in November 2014 after a friend of one of his victims complained to police. Self-employed builder Lawrance sent a text to one of his victims after attacking her, saying: "When you were crying out for me to stop I couldn't, I'm so mad at myself Bleep." The jury also found him guilty of raping another woman in a van parked in a field and of attacking another victim at her home while her son slept in a nearby bedroom. Allison Rigby, from Derbyshire Police, said Lawrance had "preyed" on vulnerable women. "He is a sexual predator who has preyed on women through match.com that he has met who have got (some) vulnerability. "He seems to have targeted females who are divorced and widowed," she added. "Only Jason Lawrance will know how many people he has sexually assaulted." Senior prosecutor Sue Matthews warned users of dating sites that they were not beyond the reach of the law. "Nobody should feel that meeting people through a dating site means that they are consenting to any sexual activity," she said. "If a person does not consent to sexual activity... that is an offence, regardless of how the victim meets the perpetrator." - AFP |

The Governor of Ekiti state, Ayo Fayose has accused the former Governor of the state, and minister of solid minerals, Kayode Fayemi of misusing the N852.9m State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) counterpart funds. Fayose said Fayemi's improper handling of the funds was what led to the blacklisting of Ekiti state, by the education board. Punch reports that Fayose alleged that the “misappropriation of funds by Fayemi hindered the state from accessing the 2013, 2014 and 2015 grants, amounting to over N2.8bn.” The Ekiti Governor, through his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, said “It is even more embarrassing and ridiculous that Fayemi’s Commissioner for Finance, Dapo Kolawole, could defend this criminal act perpetrated against the people of Ekiti State by saying there was no law forbidding states from borrowing counterpart funds to support capital development operations.” Reacting to Fayose’s allegations, the Special Assistant on Media to Fayemi, Yinka Oyebode, said the UBEC Deputy Executive Secretary, Dr. Yakubu Gambo did not accuse the Fayemi of misusing any funds. He said “Rather, Dr. Gambo gave details of the development that led to UBEC’s decision to sanction the state. He explained that the immediate past government had taken a loan from a bank to be able to make available its counterpart funding to access the UBEC fund. But the bank withdrew its money when the government lost the 2014 governorship election for fear that the incoming government might not honour the terms of repayment.” A former Governor of the old Ondo State, Evangelist Bamidele Olomilua has criticised Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose over his verbal attacks on President Muhammadu Buhari. Olomilua also said Fayose’s insults against Buhari were insults against the country. |
The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos in a landmark judgment has held that successive governments since the return of democracy in 1999 “breached the fundamental principles of transparency and accountability for failing to disclose details about the spending of recovered stolen public funds, including on a dedicated website.” The court then ordered the government of President Muhammadu Buhari to “ensure that his government, and the governments of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, and former President Goodluck Jonathan account fully for all recovered loot.” The judgment was delivered on Friday by Hon Justice M.B. Idris following a Freedom of Information suit no: FHC/IKJ/CS/248/2011brought by Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP). The details ordered by the court to be disclosed include: information on the total amount of recovered stolen public assets by each government; the amount of recovered stolen public assets spent by each government as well as the objects of such spending and the projects on which such funds were spent. Justice Idris dismissed all the objections raised by the Federal Government and upheld SERAP’s arguments. Details later.
