Thousands of holiday makers traveling to Osun, Kwara, Kogi states, and other parts of the country, have besieged the Iddo Terminus of the Nigerian Railway Corporation as the free eid-il-kabir festival free train ride provided by the government of Osun state entered its second day in Lagos. The free train initiative of the Osun state government was to help people travelling home for the Eid-il Kabir festival. But indigenes of neighbouring states have also taken the opportunity to get to various destinations when they arrive in the state capital, Osogbo. A statement signed by the Commissioner of Commerce, Cooperatives and Empowerment, Ismail Adekunle Jayeoba- Alagbada, said the train ride is to facilitate stress-free travelling for the people, who are coming home for the festival. The free train ride, which spans five days, commenced on Saturday 12, 2013. For the journey to Osogbo, the train would take off from Iddo Terminus, Lagos, at 11 o'clock daily on Saturday 12th, Sunday, and Monday 14th. The return trip to Lagos, according to the statement, is fixed for Thursday 17th and Saturday 19th as the train would depart Osogbo at 11 o'clock daily. Mr Jayeoba- Alagbada said the government embarked on the initiative in the past three years to reduce the stress people go through during Easter, Eid -il Fitri, Eid -il Kabir and Christmas festivals. "We hope our people, wherever they are coming from, Oyo, Ogun or Lagos, would make maximum use of this gesture of the government and promptly too. This is a sign that government has the welfare interests of the people at heart and would not detract from providing same as and when required," Mr Jayeoba-Alagbada said. A passenger, Idiat Oladosu, who said she was travelling to Oro, Kwara State, said it was a good opportunity for her to reduce her cost of travelling. Ganiyu Alimi, an indigene of Inisa in Odo Otin Local Government Area of the state, said he had been enjoying the free train ride since the inception of the Aregbesolas' administration. Awololo Samson, said though he is not a Muslim coming for any festival, he joined the train in Lagos to arrive in Osogbo on his way to Lokoja as he believed that would reduce his cost of travelling. |
2015: Northern Group Berates Baraje, G7 Governors Alhaji Kawu Baraje By John Shiklam The Arewa People’s Patriotic Front (APPFRONT) has described those attacking President Goodluck Jonathan over his yet- to-be-declared second term ambition as undemocratic elements without political relevance. Addressing a news conference at the weekend in Kaduna, the National chairman of APPFRONT, Mr. Modecai Ibrahim, said it was obvious that majority of those launching attacks on the president were not democrats but just seeking undue relevance. According to Ibrahim, their actions cannot be attributed to a genuine democratic practice, stressing that it's wrong to deny anyone his or her constitutional right to contest elections. He declared: "It was a wicked blackmail for anybody to have asked President Jonathan in 2011 to sign an agreement that he would not contest in 2015," pointing out that "such agreement, if it ever existed, was a nullity because it was signed under duress and without the knowledge and consent of Nigerians." He further called on those campaigning against the President to allow Nigerians decide his fate if he wants to contest for a second term, stressing that the chairman of the factional Peoples Democratic Party ‘New PDP’, Alhaji Kawu Baraje, and the seven governors cannot decide for Nigerians. "On Baraje’s flimsy excuse that if President Jonathan decides to run in 2015, it may spark off a chain of events capable of disintegrating the country, it is very unfortunate that these are the calibre of people who are aspiring to lead this nation. "These people do not wish our dear country well just because of their personal interest. Baraje and his gang, the G7 governors, should know that Nigerians now know the sponsors of all the crises and wanton destruction of lives and property in the North. "Nigerians have not forgotten so soon the fact that some selfish politicians openly told us in 2011 that they would make Nigeria ungovernable if they did not win the election and it is obvious that they have made good what we all thought was an empty threat. "We have witnessed the sponsorship of nefarious activities, all targeted at distracting the President. Despite these man-made challenges, Jonathan has continued to steer the ship of our nation to lofty heights given the state of decay he inherited. "Baraje wants Nigerians to believe that President Jonathan is ruining the nation’s economy and that he is a saint. He will have to explain to Nigerians where he was all this while, as one of the most senior officers or stakeholders when the government formed by his party (the PDP) was allegedly destroying the nation’s economy until less than two months ago when he and his disgruntled fellows decided to form a new PDP. "The office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is a highly respectable one. Those who desire to occupy this office or work with the occupant must show themselves too as men of honour and respect. "Thus, the unjustifiable assaults by people like Mallam Nasir el-Rufai and Baraje on both the office and person of the President are highly condemnable and smack total disrespect for the office which they obviously desire to occupy someday," Ibrahim stated. |

Against the grain of public perception that once prices of products go up, they never come down, the pump price of premium motor spirit, PMS, popularly known as petrol, has not only crashed in some petrol filling stations, it has gone below the official amount fixed. In some of the stations, petrol now goes for N95 per litre instead of the office price of N97 fixed by the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency, PPPRA, in January 2012. The price had been raised from N67 to N140 on January, 2012, a move which took Nigerians unawares, sparking widespread outrage. When government would not bow to demands from labour and civil society organisations, there was a mass action described by some as the Nigerian Spring after the revolt going on at the time in some Arab nations. The "Nigerian Spring" grounded business and government activities around the country for about two weeks before government reluctantly reduced the pump price from N140 to the current N97. Although some economists say the price could drop further even to N50, the government had been saying it still needed to rise to encourage private investors whose investment in the building of refineries would bring about the desired reduction. But THISDAY's investigation show that some petrol stations such as Ismah Investment Ltd. in Kwali and Planet in Bako town close to Gwagwalada on the outskirts of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, have reduced their pump price by N2 to N95 per litre. According to an official of Planet Petroleum who said he was running the business jointly with his brother but preferred not to be named, they fixed that price based on what they bought from marketers in Lagos and Port Harcourt. He said they first sold for N96 when they procured the product at a slightly higher rate. However, when the depot price dropped, they had to cut theirs to N95 for which it had been selling for the past two months, he told THISDAY. "Here we check the prevailing market prices to fix our own," he said. "Even if it moves down by just N1, we will adjust our price accordingly." He noted that even the Petroleum Products Marketing Company, PPMC, the marketing arm of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company, NNPC, still sold for N97. The marketer however said DPK or kerosene was not affected by the price slash because it didn't make economic sense after buying a litre for N120 in Warri and spending N7 on transportation. At Ismah filling station, an official, Jubril Iliyasu, said their decision to sell a litre of PMS at N95 was informed by a desire not to exploit the buyers. |
