Topsy04: Good morning boss I will love to know about masters requirements and best course to embark on . Thanks I don't think I'm in a better position to advise you on the course to go for. As for the requirements, you need your degree certificate, academic transcripts, Test of English (IELTS or PTE) if your school demands for it, CV. These are the docs i used during mine. |

Chibudinho55: Good morning, I Just got my visa grant (Subclass 500) 🙏🏽🎉 and I’m preparing for the big move to Australia soon.
I’d really appreciate insights from those already in Australia (students, PRs, citizens) anyone with real experience. I want to get things right from the start. 1. Pre-arrival preparation What are the most important things I should sort out before leaving Nigeria? Anything you wish you knew before arriving?
2. What to pack (very important) What are the must-bring items from Nigeria that are either: Hard to find in Australia Very expensive over there Clothes, shoes, gadgets, documents, personal items, what should I prioritise?
3. Food & Provisions As a Nigerian, I know food adjustment can be real. What Nigerian food items are worth bringing? Which ones are easily available in Australia? What did you regret not bringing?
4. Restricted & Prohibited Items I’ve heard Australian Border Force is very strict. What food items are NOT allowed into Australia? What must be declared at the airport? Any mistakes people commonly make that I should avoid?
5. Settling in (First 2–4 weeks) What should I focus on immediately after arrival? Getting a bank account(if applicable) Finding part-time jobs Transportation setup
6. Cost of Living Reality For someone just landing: How much should I realistically budget monthly? Any tips to survive the first few months financially?
7. Jobs & Survival Tips How easy is it to get a first job (especially for students)? Best kinds of jobs to start with? Any platforms or strategies that actually work?
8. General Advice 🙏🏽 If you could start over again as a new immigrant in Australia, what would you do differently? I’m open to all advice good, bad, honest. No sugarcoating please 🙌🏽
Thanks in advance as I prepare for this new chapter 🇦🇺✨ I still need help with my pre arrival, Ejoor, Biko, Abeg, Please 🥺 |

Obiora94: Your agent should have informed you that IELTS is mandatory. Even if a school accepts you without IELTS, Home Affairs will not grant your visa without it. I would suggest that you take the IELTS and then apply again. Perhaps plan realistically for May or June, although I have heard of visa grants being issued within a month or two recently.
Please don’t apply to just any course—do your research, show genuine interest, and demonstrate a logical career progression. Also, plan ahead for what happens after your studies. If you don’t prefer IDP, you might try AECC Global, but to be honest, agents have a lot on their plate, so you will need to follow up a lot. You can make their life easier by preparing all the documents ahead.
Good luck! Aside IELTS, can one take another exam. E.g; PTE, TOEFL, etc |

AussieJoan: 1. Depends on the state, school and course you'll be going for. (Please go for something that would grant your PR, studying another course is a hassle no one should go through). 2. Yes, it will be possible, but it will be hard. (theres a post about it in the other student thread). 3. They can join as dependents, some people include them in the original application, others apply for subsequent entrance after the main applicant is in australia. Please, how do one know the courses/programs that would grant PR? |

cadno: My people help me help a friend.
My padi just land Canada on Visitors Visa, and has gained admission to school for PGD. He has not been working for any company for 2 years now...but on self hustle. But used his friend registered company ( not active) as his working place. Please when he writes his SOP, should he state he still working there or resigned ? Will the V.O ask for letter of employment, leave and resignation letters ??
What should he do in this regard, is letter of employment necessary now that he is already in Canada? Since he used his friend's company as his employment history, then he needs to present the employment letter, payslips, reference letter study approved leave letter, ID card, etc at least 4 of those listed docs. If you want to lie, let your lies be truthful cos IRCC can revisit your case when you want to apply for your PR or Citizenship. |

johnstan: It's been a while I've been here. The reality in Canada was not as I envisaged but we give God the glory for the last 8 months I've been here.
There have been times I questioned if I did the right thing and times I was confident I did the right thing. Canada is designed to reward the SMART ones and not just the average HARDWORKER. Don't get me wrong, if you work hard you will surely be rewarded, however, you might continue in that endless loop whle the smart ones are soaring.
Our social media content creators unfortunately paint a perfect picture of life in Canada and prevent people from preparing adequately before arrival. The housing crisis, the lack of student jobs, the cost of living (especially if you depend on the Naira cos of no jobs) etc, is not a joke.
In all, it's a beautiful place especially in the summer and extremely cold in the winter. Basic amenities are present so you don't worry about basic things really.
Comparing life over here with life back home, it's way better once you're settled and finacially equipped so don't be discouraged in pursuing your dreams.
Feel free to shoot me questions and I'll gladly answer. Please don't send me emails cos chances are that I wouldn't see them. It's been a while indeed, good to have you back on Nairaland. |

GoodofNaija: Now to give back to this thread that greatly helped me to actualize my Canada dream, its my 7th month in Canada.
I got my PPR around xmas period last year, it was my special xmas gift . My application lasted for about 5 months with IRCC before my PPR was released after sending a few webforms.
Note that I did not bombard them with webforms. I was very strategic and careful at sending the webforms as I was using them to give additional info about myself. For example i changed job during the period so i updated them with my new letter of employment. Then at some point when the school requested for my PPR/study permit upload, i also sent webform to remind IRCC of this development and used it to tell them to take a timely decision on my application. I let them know I was not insisting on getting the PPR but i just want them to take a decision so that I can make solid plans for my future.
Praise be to God! I got the PPR at last! From then on, things started happening so fast. I sent my passport to IRCC and had to book flight for 2nd week in January as school was already suggesting deferment to me. However, my passport did not come out until 3rd week so i had to postpone my flight till Jan 30. Luckily for me, school later advised me to register for virtual classes for the first term which i agreed to so i started lectures by the 2nd wk in January. So i had started classes well before leaving Nigeria. My first challenge with the classes was that they were always falling in midnight or very early in the morning Nigerian time. They started bombarding us with assignments and online presentations which were very difficult for me because of the timing and poor electricity and network in Nigeria.
Then the d-day came Jan 30, i moved to Lagos a day before my flight (Jan 29). I made photocopies of all relevant documents that may be needed at the airport. I had also bought some winter wears as i was aware it was winter in canada. My first time outside Nigeria and during the winter, the anxiety no be here! And then on day, proceeded to the airport with my luggage, one of my luggage was flagged for containing groundnut oil. So i gave my brother the ground nut oil. Initially, Only my wife was allowed to accompany me into the lounge after the immigration check in. I went back to bring my brother in. Then my luggage was finally checked in at the airline (qatar) desk and then i had to say goodbye to my wife and bro and then proceeded to further check ins till the final one before we entered the plane around 4pm Jan 30 and then the flight to Doha lasted for about 7hrs. I got to Doha midnight and slept on the the airport seats close to where i will board my next flight to Canada. Just after a few hours, i realized people were already gathering there and so I moved closer and then we were checked in again for the flight Canada. This was a turtuous long 14hrs journey for me in the air . We eventually arrived at Montreal. From there, i had to board another flight to Toronto.
My arrival at Montreal was first my taste of winter, especially when we were being directed to the toronto flight. I was like, is this where i will be living? Even with winter jacket, you will get frozen if you stay long in it but we quickly boarded the toronto flight and we landed at my last destination at Toronto Pearson airport. Lest i forget, i got my study permit at the Montreal airport being my port of entry. To get it, they asked me for proof of study as I was late so i showed evidence of my online classes and platform on my phone and so i was given my study permit promptly .
At toronto airport, i collected my luggage and then moved to exit the airport. I called my friend and then my second real taste of winter was about to happen. As i exited the airport to check where my friend parked, the winter cold hit me like crazy and i immediately ran back inside the lounge and next i had to take courage and prepared myself well to go out again to locate my friend. Thank God I was able to locate him on time. Between the time l located and moved my luggage to his car, i was already shivering like a chicken inside water. The cold no be here o!
From there, we went home and my Canada life began. My study was a very tough battle and then it was difficult to get work during winter. Thank God I had some money on me that helped to survive.
After about 7 months, i have just finished my program this month. Guys study here is not easy......you must be ready for plenty assignments and presentations. My school is Sheridan College. Thank God for the journey so far. Canada is a beautiful and organized country and many opportunities to survive before you fully stabilize. Companies full everywhere!
This is my journey so far in Canada! I enjoyed your write up, it was well detailed. But, i have a question to ask. Were you able to secure a job, and how long did it take you? How did you find a job, was it via in person or it was online via indeed, jobbank, etc. |
