Nigeria’s electoral body INEC on Saturday cancelled a re-run of disputed elections in six local government areas in the volatile southern oil-rich Rivers state because of irregularities.

The re-run for seats in the Rivers state assembly and the national assembly in Abuja became necessary after court rulings on challenges to the initial results of last year elections.

Rivers electoral commissioner Aneidi Ikoiwak told reporters in Port Harcourt, the state capital, that polls were suspended in Gokana, Khana, Andoni, Bonny, Eleme and Tai due to “irregularities” during Saturday’s voting.

The elections went ahead in the remaining 17 of 23 local government areas going to the polls. The official said some party agents had attacked electoral officials after accusing them of using fake election materials for the vote. “This allegation is untrue. All election materials used by INEC are genuine. A new date will be announced for the election,” he said.

Former governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Kalu Friday welcomed the verdict of the Supreme Court directing his trial by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for alleged N2.4billion fraud when he ran the affairs of the state between 1999 and 2007.

The apex court had dismissed his appeal for lacking in merit.

Kalu who in the appeal, had sought to quash the charge of money laundering brought against him by EFCC, said moment after the Supreme Court’s ruling Friday that “this is another opportunity to prove my innocence.”

“I have all the records and facts of the case. I am willing to submit myself for the rule of law to take its course. That has always been my passion advocacy right from the lower courts where the case enamnated,” he said from London.

He added: “this clarification has become imperative lest oppositional forces mischievously misinterpret the ruling and mislead the public by injecting their jaundiced opinions into the routine directive as had always been with similar cases where the apex court intervened.”

He assured the EFCC of his “continued support and profound cooperation in any further investigation into this allegation,’’ and also claimed it “is part of the price I have to pay for opposing the third-term agenda fiasco of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.”

A similar appeal by Kalu’s associate, Udeh Jones Udehogo was similarly dismissed Friday by the Supreme Court for the same reason.

Justice Suleiman Galadima, who wrote the lead judgments in both appeals, upheld the concurrent decisions of the Federal High Court, Abuja and Appeal Court, Abuja in refusing the appeals.

The five-man panel of the apex court, in its unanimous judgments, directed the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court to assign the cases to new judges for hearing.

On Kalu’s case, Justice Galadima, whose judgment was read by Justice Sylvester Ngwuta, said: “The appellant had approached the Federal High Court, Abuja to quash the charges made against him by the EFCC.

“The Court dismissed the case. He went to the Court of Appeal, Abuja Division. He lost and approached this court.

“Having considered all issues raised and arguments by parties, I come to the conclusion that I cannot, but help in dismissing this appeal for lacking in merit. It is dismissed.

“I affirm the decision of the court bellow, which rightly affirmed the decision of the Federal High Court, that it was not bound by the ex-parte order of the Abia State High Court as to vitiate the charges preferred against the appellant.

“The learned Chief Judge of the Federal High Court should assign the case to another judge for expeditious trial,” Justice Galadima said.

Other members of the panel: Justice Mahmud Mohammed (the Chief Justice of Nigeria), Bode Rhodes-Vivour, Sylvester Nwgwuta and Datijo Mohammed agreed with the lead judgments in both appeals.

In its decision on April 27, 2012 the Court of Appeal, Abuja division dismissed the appeal by Kalu against the ruling of the Federal High Court, Abuja dismissing his motion seeking to quash the charge against him and his company, Slok Nigeria Limited.

Justice Ejembi Eko, who read the judgment on behalf of Justices Kayode Bada and Regina Nwodo resolved all issues in the appeal against Kalu and his company and dismissed the appeal for lacking in merit.

Justice Eko noted that the proof of evidence attached to the 97 count charge preferred against the appellants by the EFCC disclosed a prima facie case against the former governor and others.

Justice Eko said the facts raised in the proof of evidence established a prima facie case against the appellants. He further said that as far as there is a link which prima facie is all about, the appellants had an obligation to stand trial to defend themselves.

He further ruled that the ex-parte order of May 31, 2007 by Abia State High Court, asking the Federal High Court to stay all proceedings against Orji was a racquet suit aimed at frustrating his arrest and subsequent prosecution.

“That order was an order at large, personal rather than definite. It was an order made as an ex-parte and not at the course of trial.”

He described the ex-parte motion as an abuse of court process.

Justice Eko said the claim of breach of personal freedom raised by Orji was sentimental in nature, adding that the claim bordered on the realm of conspiracy theory and is politically motivated.

He said right to personal liberty is not absolute.

On whether EFCC had the competence to charge the appellants, Justice Eko held that both the EFCC Establishment Act and the Money laundering and Prohibition Act, (MPLA, 2003, 2004) had given the commission power to prosecute offenders.

“EFCC derives its competence to prosecute from section 6 and 7 of its Establishing Act. Equally, the definition of economic crime is quite wide,” he said.

The appellate court further held that the proof of evidence attached to the 97-count charge preferred against the appellants by the EFCC disclosed a prima facie case against the former governor and others.

Justice Eko also denounced the ex-parte order of May 31, 2007 by the Abia State High Court.

“That order was an order at large, personal rather than definite. It was an order made as an ex-parte and not at the course of trial.”

The EFCC had on July 27, 2007 arraigned Kalu before the High Court in Abuja on charges of money laundering, official corruption and criminal diversion of public funds totaling over N5 billion.

On September 3, 2007 Kalu filed a motion before the court seeking an order to strike out all EFCC charges against him and to vacate the terms and conditions of the bail earlier granted by the court. The court dismissed the motion, a decision Kalu appealed to the Court of Appeal.

A member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ofinijite Amachree, was burnt alive in Buguma, Asari-Toru Local Government of Rivers State yesterday.

Amachree was beaten up and burnt. Five were clubbed to death between Saturday and Sunday.

The murder of Amachree took place barely 48 hours after APC’s Ward 4 chairman in Omoku, headquarters of Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni, Franklin Obi, was beheaded at his home by masked gunmen at 9 pm. His wife and 18-year-old son, Bestman, were also killed.

Four APC members were killed in Obibi, Etche Local Government, while Gabriel Cookey was clubbed to death in Opobo, headquarters of Opobo/Nkoro.

There were sporadic shootings at the wee hours of yesterday in Omoku, headquarters of Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni.

A source said: “We don’t really know what caused the fight; but what we know is that it is a clash between the APC and PDP. There were gunshots; so, we had to take cover in our house. One guy, popularly known as Kpom Kpom, who I think is an APC member was killed and burnt. As I speak with you, there is tension in Buguma”.

Police spokesman Ahmad Muhammad confirmed the incident.

Muhammad said normalcy had returned to the area following the response of security operatives.

He said: “On Saturday’s killings in Omoku, no arrest has been made yet, but it is under investigation.

“There was a report of security breach in Buguma, but normalcy has been restored, due to the intervention by our men. I do not have any report on killings in Opobo and Obibi-Etche, for now (at 3:49 pm).”

The mother of the Caretaker Committee Chairman of Asari-Toru Local Government, Sobomabo Jackrich, was abducted by armed men on Sunday around Obiri Ikwerre Bridge, Port Harcourt.

State PDP Chairman Felix Obuah condemned the killing of an APC chief and his family in Omoku in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area (ONELGA).

Obuah, in a statement in Port Harcourt by his Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Jerry Nedam, expressed shock at the “reckless killings in Omoku”.

The PDP chief said the killing “is condemnable, unacceptable abominable and sheer madness”.

He wondered why entreaties by Governor Nyesom Wike to warring youths in Omoku during his visit to the area a few weeks ago could be so flagrantly violated.

He described the murder of the family on Saturday, “as one too many,” and urged the police to tighten up security around the area and all parts of the state.

‘’My heart goes out to those that lost their lives and loved ones in these tragic events,’’ Obuah said.

The chairman urged politicians to join hands with Wike to keep the state peaceful and secure from criminals, rather than trading words and politicking with insecurity.

He regretted that rather than join in the fight against criminality and insecurity, some politicians have politicised the situation.

Besides the killing of Franklin Obi, his wife and son, the Obuah claimed the PDP Chairman in Obite, Isaac Ikechukwu Chinedu, and Ward 9 PDP Assistant Secretary from Oboburu, Chinedu Saidey, both of Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni, also lost their lives to gunmen.

Rivers State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in the 2015 election Dr. Dakuku Peterside has described the state as a killing field.

Peterside, in a statement yesterday, condemned the murder of Ofinijite Amachree, an APC stalwart in Buguma, Asari-Toru Local Government Area.

Amachree was beaten up and set ablaze.

He decried the execution, describing it as frightening and unprecedented. According to him, the pathetic security situation inthe state is unfortunately an affront on the Federal Government’s power to protect life and property within its territory.

Peterside, who spoke in Port Harcourt said the state urgently needs help.

“The security situation in our state is distressing and we cannot continue to live under such a desperate situation. I am again drawing attention to daily killings in Rivers State.

“Last Friday, Mr. Franklin, APC Ward 4 chairman in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government was killed and beheaded in Omoku. His wife and son were also killed. Franklin, who recently moderated APC ward meeting in the council, hails from the same ward as the state chairman of the PDP, Felix Obuah.

“Four APC persons were killed in Obibi, Etche council in the last 48 hours. Gabriel Cookey was clubbed to death in Opobo, Opobo/Nkoro councils.

“Only yesterday morning, in Buguma, Ofinjite Amachree , an APC member was set ablaze by alleged thugs of PDP.

“In fact, in the last two weeks, over 30 APC members have been killed in different parts of the state. We are tired of this bloodbath; this is why we are calling on the Federal Government to come to our aid.

“As citizens of the state, we know that this heart-rending situation is a fallout of loss of moral right by the Nyesom Wike-led government to fight criminality having allegedly benefited from their activities. But this killing must stop and the time is now.

“Unfortunately, members of PDP are allegedly heeding the call by Wike to burn alive members of the opposition and other electoral personnel, who stand in their way to victory in the rerun elections.”

Some lecturers of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) who listed to serve as ad hoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the March 19 state and National Assembly re-run elections in Rivers State have opted out of the exercise over an alleged threat by the state governor, Chief Nyesom Wike.
INEC had shortlisted about 300 lecturers from UNIPORT to serve in the election as ad hoc staff.

The lecturers, who met with the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Ndowa Lale, monday, said their decision to stay away from the exercise was as a result of the statement credited to the governor that those who planned to rig the re-run elections should be ready for the consequences.

Wike had told Lale that the All Progressives Congress (APC) had infiltrated the list of lecturers from the institution with the aim of rigging the re-run legislative elections through the imposition of politically-compromised returning officers.

The governor had also claimed that one Dr. Otu Ekpeyong and an APC chieftain in Asari-Toru connived to draw up a list of returning officers from the UNIPORT with the aim of rigging the re-run polls.
He had warned that lecturers who would allow themselves to be used by APC chieftains would face the wrath of Rivers people.

Addressing the gathering of over 300 lecturers monday, Ekpeyong described himself as a man of integrity who had witnessed many elections in the past and wondered why the governor should suspect that he was planning to rig the March 19 re-run elections.

Ekpeyong said he had taken a personal decision not to be part of the election.
“The vice chancellor gave me a job, which I did to the best of my ability. This (INEC ad-hoc employee) is an assignment I have done for over seven years and my integrity has never been in doubt.

“Personally, I am making a decision of not going anywhere (not to be part of the election),” Ekpeyong said.
Another lecturer, Dr. Ben Ihewosira, explained that he was also opting out of the Rivers State re-run elections, adding that the exercise had been politicised.

Similarly, Dr. Abdulrahman Megida, who is a senior lecturer in UNIPORT, specifically demanded that his name be expunged from the list of INEC ad-hoc staff for the polls.

According to him, “My name is synonymous to the All Progressives Congress and you know that the government here is PDP. Based on that, I want my name to be expunged from the list.”

The vice-chancellor had earlier advised the lecturers to stay away from the election if they were not sure of contributing to the conduct of a free, fair and credible election.

Lale pointed out that since INEC had not faulted the list, he would not withdraw it, adding that doing otherwise would mean authenticating the allegations against the lecturers, whose names were on the list.

“The university will not take it kindly with anybody who may want to rubbish its (UNIPORT) name during the forthcoming elections. I signed the list because I know the people on the list are people with integrity.
“But each of you should be sure of the decision you want to take. I want you all to be alive after the rerun elections on the 19th of March,” Lale said.

All those that are attempting to distort the narrative about the tragic plight of Miss Ese Oruru are evil and we commit them to God's judgement. The facts are as follows. She is 14 years old and not 18 and she was abducted from her home. She did not leave her home freely or of her own volition.


She was cruelly and wickedly carried away and stolen from her parents, family and loved ones and forcefully taken by complete strangers to a distant land that she had never been before on the other side of the country.


This is not a love story about two inseparable young people: it is a story about pedophilia, child abduction, kidnapping, human trafficking, slavery, rape, impunity, wickedness and ritual sex and Emir Sanusi has a case to answer. That little girl has been raped over and over again and she may well have aids, VVF or some other strange sexual disease by now.


Instead of sympathizing with her and considering the fact that she may never be the same again in view of the physical and mental torture and trauma that she has suffered over the last few months, some misguided souls and shameless commentators have the temerity to come to social media and say that she was old enough to "get it" whilst others say that she ''loved it'' and ''wanted it''. I am utterly disgusted and appauld by these sentiments. Where is the humanity of those that speak and think like this? Where is their compassion and where is their soul?
May God judge them and may their own infant daughters be abducted, forcefully Islamised, raped, enslaved and kept against their will as a sex slave in an Emir's palace in the same way that Ese was.

Meanwhile I just watched an AIT video in which 14 year old Ese Oruru's mother claimed that her daughters abductors said that it was the Emir of Kano himself that ordered her daughters abduction and that she was kept in his palace for over one year for his pleasure. If this is true it confirms the suspicion that the Emir is culpable. If what she has said is true it also proves that the Emir is not only a praticing pedophile but also a very sick man and he must be held accountable.


It is important that Emir Sanusi clears the air and tells us precisely what he did with this little girl otherwise we are entitled to assume the worse and believe what Ese's mother has told us. Quite apart from that we are compelled to ask whether this sort of thing has happened before and how widespread it is? How many other little girls have been stolen from their homes and forced to join harems all over the nation?


The famous high society blogger and respected celebrity Miss Linda Ikeji has just exposed yet another case. This time it is a young 17 year old christian girl, by the name of Miss Patience Paul, who has been abducted from her home, parents and loved ones in Benue state, forcefully taken to Sokoto state and kept there against her will in the Sultan's palace.


Evidently we live in a strange country where evil is swept under the carpet and often justified. We live in a country where those that expose such evil abominations and speak truth are demonised, hated, despised and, more often than not, threatened with violence, persecution, intimidation, arrest, spurious criminal investigations and baseless civil court actions. More often than not this is the price of speaking the truth and exposing evil in Nigeria.

There is clearly a conspiracy of silence about the perpetuation of evil in this country amongst the ruling elite. The feeling is that anyone can get away with anything providing they belong to a particular circle and class and providing they have money and power. And it is because they have money and power and they have powerful friends in government and in the political class that they feel that they can silence, crush, kill, abduct, cripple, ruin, sue and jail anybody that tests their will and crosses them or that exposes the truth about their blood-chilling and perverse ways.

That is the reality of Nigeria and it is a sad and sorry one. All I can say is thank God for the media and particularly for the Punch newspaper who started the ball rolling last Sunday. If not for their cover story about Ese with all those pictures on their front page the little girl would not be free and at home with her family today. Instead she would have still been in slavery and captivity at the Emir of Kano's palace.


We should also thank the Nation newspaper particularly for their timely editorial on this issue which was published on 1st March and which raised some pertinent questions and offered wise counsel about the way forward. The Punch, the Nation, AIT, Channels, Tribune, the Sun, Vanguard, Thisday and all the other newspaper titles and television stations in the Nigerian media and social media has done what no-one else or no other group could do.



Not even the Federal Government, the state governments, the political parties, the politicians, the security agencies, the lawyers or the so-called human rights groups could do what they managed to do or achieve what they have achieved. They have helped to secure the freedom of a helpless and defenseless little girl from slavery, torment, humiliation, destruction, death, disease and bondage and they have brought her home safely to her parents. We need more of this. Kudos to them and God bless them all. And may God damn and shame those that chose to remain silent and look the other way.

A Vietnamese man caused his house to go up in flames while attempting to get rid of a rat with a lighter and some gasoline. He told the police that the rat had been driving him crazy so when he finally caught it on Thursday, February 25, he decided to punish it by setting it on fire.

On Friday, he poured gasoline on the rat and set it on fire. The burning rat reportedly ran and hid under his car which was parked inside the house.


The car caught fire and soon the whole house was engulfed in flames.The house was completely burnt down by the time firefighters arrived.

Although no one was hurt, Police said the damage has been estimated at billons of dong.

Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike, has asked all indigenes of the state who are on scholarship abroad to return to Nigeria to continue their scholarship programmes in any University in the country as the state is currently facing financial crisis and can't continue to sponsor them.

This directive is contained in a letter sent out to the students early this month. The affected students are those that are not in final year as all final year students will be allowed to complete their programmes at their various universities.

The Senate has instituted a probe into the activities of DSTV owned by the South African based Multichoice Africa, in Nigeria. At the plenary session yesterday February 24th, the Senators expressed dissatisfaction over the services of the company when Senator Isah Hamma Misau (APC, Bauchi Central) sponsored a motion tagged, " Unwholesome practices of Multichoice Nigeria (DSTV)."

Misau while moving the motion, accused Multichoice of dominating the Nigerian satellite television market, thereby enabling it to engage in negative and unhealthy practices amongst which are arbitrary increase in subscription charges, refusal to adopt pay 'as-you-use' model applicable in other countries, poor service delivery and absence of toll free lines for customers complaints.

The Senators then mandated the Senate Committees on Information and Trade & Investment to institute a public hearing on the matter and consider summoning the top officials of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and Consumer Protection Council (CPC) over the issue. Senate President Bukola Saraki said they will continue to safeguard the interest of Nigerian consumers. The two committees were given four weeks to carry out their investigations and report back to the house.

A statement by PDP's national legal adviser, Victor Kwon, says Secondus is being accused of illegally receiving a number of buses and demands that the buses be returned. The statement in part reads;


“The oppressive and unfair treatments against its key leaders by the Federal Government. The party alerts the nation that the arrest and detention of its Deputy National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is part of the grand script by the APC-led Federal Government to decimate the opposition,”. The statement alleged that there were plans by EFCC to “arrest and detain the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio and other leaders of the party on imaginary charges. Indeed, intelligence available to the party shows that the Federal Government, using its various agencies, is bent on destroying any opposition to the ruling party as all indications show that the government is more interested in humiliating the PDP than fighting corruption'.
