Investment › Cryto-hacking: South Korean Cryptocurrency Exchange Hacked by chily11(op): 9:55am On Dec 19, 2017
A South Korean cryptocurrency exchange said on Tuesday it is shutting down and is filing for bankruptcy after it was hacked for the second time this year, highlighting concerns about security as trade in bitcoin and other virtual currencies boom.

The exchange, called Youbit, had been hacked once before in April when nearly 4,000 bitcoins were stolen in a cyber attack that the country’s spy agency linked to North Korea, according to a South Korean newspaper report on Saturday.

Youbit announced on its website that it had been hacked at 4:35am local time on Tuesday, causing a loss worth 17 percent of its total assets.

It did not elaborate on the amount, but said all customers’ cryptocurrency assets will be marked down to 75 percent of its value, adding it has stopped trading and will work to minimize customer losses.

Youbit is a smaller player in South Korea’s cryptocurrency market, with the world’s busiest cryptocurrency exchange Bithumb accounting for about 70 percent of the country’s market share.

An official at Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA), the state agency that responds to cyberattacks, said the police and KISA officials were starting an investigation into the hacking.

Bitcoin exchanges and wallets have a history of being targeted, and security experts say they become more vulnerable to cyber-crime as valuations rise.

Christianity Etc › The God-shaped Hole In Your Brain by chily11(op): 7:08pm On Dec 17, 2017
If God designed the human brain, he (or she) did a lousy job. Dogged by glitches and biases, requiring routine shutdown for maintenance for 8 hours a day, and highly susceptible to serious malfunction, a product recall would seem to be in order. But in one respect at least, God played a blinder: our brains are almost perfectly designed to believe in him/her.

Is that rustle in the dark a predator, or just the wind? It pays to think something causes everything – a survival trait that makes us all hard-wired to believe.

Almost everybody who has ever lived has believed in some kind of deity. Even in today’s enlightened and materialistic times, atheism remains a minority pursuit requiring hard intellectual graft. Even committed atheists easily fall prey to supernatural ideas.

The human mind is the perfect breeding ground for bizarre beliefs, so we shouldn’t be surprised that fake news has such a powerful influence.

Conspiracy theory? Fake news? It’s not just the naive who are prone to delusional beliefs, and the only answer is to question, question, question and question.

Everyone loves a good story. So much so that our brains make them up all the time, and most of the time we don’t even notice. This is confabulation – and it can make fools of us all.

Confabulation is common in dementia, when people fabricate stories to fill in gaps in memory. In Capgras delusion, where a person insists that a loved one has been abducted and replaced by a doppelgänger, confabulation explains away the sensation of disconnection they feel in the company of someone they know they should love.

Investment › Bitcoin Price Now $19K: How Soon Before $20,000? by chily11(op): 4:58pm On Dec 17, 2017
There haven’t been significant updates to bitcoin’s protocol or trading volumes in the last 24 hours. As always, miner rewards have kept pace with the surge in bitcoin’s price to enable profits. The most probable reason for a rise in bitcoin’s valuations is the prospect of institutional investors investing in it. TD Ameritrade has become the latest big name to enter the bitcoin sweepstakes by allowing customers to trade in bitcoin futures, starting Monday. The entry of institutional investors is expected to bring price stability to the cryptocurrency.

Within the last 24 hours, its price has jumped by approximately $1,600. Last week, at around the same time, bitcoin was trading at $14,623.18. This means that its value has appreciated by approximately $5,400 in a week. On an overall basis, the cryptocurrency is up by 1,845% this year. At this rate, a price of $20,000 before the end of this year might not be unreasonable.

But prominent names are increasingly describing bitcoin's price rise as a bubble. In an interview with BusinessInsider, Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman said the bitcoin bubble was unlike the housing crisis bubble because the cost of producing new bitcoins has become more expensive (as compared to housing, which became cheaper due to greater supply).

Crime › Tension Brews Between Binis And Ijaws by chily11(op): 9:16am On Dec 16, 2017
The prevailing tension in Ijaw communities in Edo state is heightening each day and the war songs between the Binis and the Ijaws have continued to increase. The crisis over the ownership of Ijaw occupied lands became visible after Governor Godwin Obaseki decided to build a multi billion dollars Export Processing Zone (EPZ) in Gelegele, Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo state.

The Ijaws occupied some communities in Ovia North East and Ovia South West Local Government Areas of Edo state, an area that is under the enclave of the Oba of Benin. The entire seven Local Government Areas in Edo South are seen as the main Benin Kingdom. However, the crisis became worse after Ijaw traditional rulers made an attempt to install one Mr Godwin Oguyenbo as the Pere of Olodiama Kingdom, Ovia North East Local Government Area. Saturday Vanguard gathered that security operatives stopped the installation which attracted Ijaw traditional rulers from the six South South states. But the Ijaws who insisted that they had been living in the coastal areas before the arrival of the Benins, described the attempt to stop them from having a king as oppressive and unacceptable. After the botched installation, the Iyase of Benin Kingdom, Chief Sam Igbe and other top Benin Chiefs, addressed journalists insisting that the Ijaws were tenants on the land.

According to him, “ Ovia North East Local Government Area is under the authority of the Oba of Benin, who is the prescribed authority. We have only one monarch in the whole Edo South senatorial district and that is the Oba. The title Pere of Olodiama Kingdom does not exist. Gelegele is under the over lordship of the Oba of Benin and there cannot be two monarchs in Benin. We are advising the Pere of Gbaramatu, Delta state to avoid falling foul of the relevant laws of Edo state. The Ijaw people in Gelegele are free to live in the area just as any other ethnic groups that live in that axis. Any attempt to lay claim to non-existent title and community or village under any guise would be totally resisted.

We call on law enforcement agencies to fully investigate and arrest those that are behind this abominable and sacrilegious act”. The state government in a statement signed by the Secretary to the Government, Osarodion Ogie, declared that “the claim of such a non-existent title in a non-existent community under any guise is a clear and pre-meditated breach of our laws particularly the Traditional Rulers and Chiefs Law of Edo state which said law sets out the lists of all recognized traditional rulers and Chiefs of Edo state. The said law further makes it a criminal offence for any person to recognize or purport to install any person as a traditional ruler except as provided for under the law and in fact makes it an offence for any unqualified person to present or permit himself to be so addressed”.

But last Friday, the Ijaws gathered at the palace of the Kalasuo of Okomu Kingdom, Ovia South West Local Government Area, declaring the claim that the Oba of Benin owns the land in Ijaw communities as arrant nonsense. Giving the historical account of the ownership of Ijaw lands in Edo, the Fiyewei of Okomu Kingdom, Chief Ajele Sunday, asserted that “ the Ijaws are autochthonous as opposed to being settlers as the Binis would want the world to believe.

The Okomu Kingdom just like every other Ijaw Kingdom in the Niger Delta has been on the coast line stretching from Akwa Ibom State to the Mahin River in Ondo state from a dim past. Okomu Kingdom is among the Kingdoms in Ijaw Nation that contributes about 60% of Nigeria’s foreign earnings, making the Ijaw Nation the economic pillar on which Nigeria rest herself for survival. In the same manner Okomu Kingdom and their kith and kin of Olodiama, Egbema Furupagha and Gbanraun Clan are the economic life wire of Edo state, due to their endowment with natural and mineral resource. “The Portuguese who came into Nigeria first met the Ijaws of Ogulagha Kingdom (whom the Portuguese referred to as Gulani) in the Fekedosi (Forcados) River via the Oporoza Toru (Escravos) of Gbaramatu Kingdom down to the Ijaws of Okomu, Olodiama and Egbema Kingdoms of the Ijaw Nation before making contacts with the Binis at the hinterland. It is important to note that the Bini people are not of aboriginal stock in their present settlement and also do not belong to the coastal belt of the Niger Delta that is occupied by the Ijaws, since the Binis of Edo state neither know how to paddle nor are they aquatic by nature. “The rich pool of incontrovertible scholarly evidence and documentation in support of the aboriginal status of the Ijaws of Okomu, Olodiama, Egbema, Furupagha and Gbanraun Clans of the Midwestern Region, which later metamorphosed to Bendel state that later gave birth to Edo and Delta states was sealed by the most outstanding Bini historian Dr Jacob Uwagboe Egharevba of blessed memory.

This is the most reliable and celebrated historian of a Royal blood of the Bini enclave”. Stressing that Ijaws were not part of Benin Kingdom and can never be, Chief Ajele told the Binis that “the Ijaws have never been conquered people therefore it would be an aberration for the Binis to describe them as tenants. The Ijaws of Edo state were on the land you presently claim as yours. You were settled by the Ijaws at a village called Udo, your first settlement, presently still called same. We witnessed the invitation you extended to the Oni of Ife to bring one his sons by name Oranmiyan to settle the internal crisis that engulfed the entire environment due to the influx of the Binis to our land. The original name of the land presently called Benin is Ado Bou or Igodomigodo (meaning the key to the kingdom in Ijaw language). Oramiyan in anger after failed attempts to reconcile the aborigines and the Ife settlers at Udo Village called the land “Ile-Ibinu” before his departure back to Ile-Ife. The Ijaws of Okomu, Olodiama, Egbema, Furupagha and Gbanraun Clans of Edo State are not quick to forget about the relationship that had existed between the Benin Kingdom and their ancestral home of Ile-Ife.

This was evidenced by the practice of the Bini people of Edo State taking the bodies of their late Obas back to Ile-Ife for burial. Hitherto, the Bini people known for their antecedent for expansionism had always been checkmated by their coastal Ijaw neighbours of Okomu, Olodiama, Egbema, Furupagha and Gbanraun Clans in Edo state. History has it that, the Ogbe family in Udo gave out one of his daughters, Afunde in marriage to one of the Traditional Rulers, King Beri of Okomu which consequently strengthened the relationship between the Okomu Ijaw and the Bini people of Udo. “Okomu Kingdom like every other Ijaw Kingdom in Edo State is of aboriginal status, this is further buttressed by other historical facts besides ownership of the Okomu Forest that has been our sacred grove. Just like it is obtained in all ethnic nationalities that evolved distinctly in Nigeria and Africa, monarchs are sourced within the particular ethnic groups and so Okomu Kingdom cannot be different. It will be a serious aberration and the height of cultural and traditional sacrilege for the Binis to overlord the Okomu people.

At this juncture it is important to note that the Peres (Kings) of Ijaw Nation are neither elected nor by inheritance but through divine selection by the national gods of the Ijaw Nation, they are both Spiritual and Political in their sovereign dispensations. Unfortunately through the economic and political marginalization of the Ijaws there is an attempt to demean our monarchs and deny us our aboriginal rights of ownership. We are ready to defend with the last drop of our blood our Kingdoms and Kings”. Addressing journalists also, the President of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Eric Omare, raised an alarm over alleged plan by the state government to deploy soldiers to Gelegele and other Ijaw communities in Edo state including Okikoro where they have their Egbesu shrine, saying that such action will be a declaration of war against the Ijaw nation and will be resisted.

But the state government through the Special Adviser to the governor on Communication, Mr Cusoe Osagie said there were no such plans yet, adding however that the state government would ensure that lives and property of indigenes of the state living in those areas were protected in the event of any threat to peace in the area. According to him, “I am not aware of any deployment of soldiers to that area. However, the state government has the right to protect all law abiding citizens in the state. Nevertheless, no breach of peace has been reported yet, but if and when that is done, the state government will ensure that lives and properties are protected. If the IYC are law abiding people in the state then they have nothing to fear about¨.

However, Omare, president of the Ijaw Youth Council alleged that “¨Only this afternoon we got a message that the government of Edo state in collaboration with the Benin Traditional Council have perfected plans to send soldiers to Ijaw communities starting from Gelegele and the Egbesu shrine in Okikoro. We want to advice, if they do that it will be a declaration of war against the Ijaw nation, they should not take the Ijaw nation’s silence for weakness. The Ijaw nation has the capacity to defend its people anywhere in Nigeria¨. Reacting to the Supreme Court judgment which the Binis said gave them the right to the land, Omare asserted that “I have read the judgement they are referring to between two individuals in Gelegele and Ughoton, that judgment has nothing to do with the entirety of the land owned by the Ijaw people of Edo state. You cannot use a land dispute between two individuals from two communities to rope the entire nation, it is ridiculous.

So, that judgment has no relevance to the issues at stake. We want to warn the government of Edo state to behave like a government and not an extension of the palace. Also speaking, Dr Tommy Kolodowei, Otunba Kalasowei of Ijaw Apoi nation, insisted that ¨this land belongs to my ancestors. The Apoi ancestors occupied this land for centuries. The Apoi in Ondo state today moved from Okomu to Ondo state. Now if Apoi people left Okomu to Ondo state and in Ondo state today, Apoi has ten approved kings, and where they moved from does not have a king, that does not make sense to anybody. I want Nigeria to solve that puzzle for me.

Benin people live on land, they don’t know anything about water, now they are claiming they own water. How can you own something you don’ know nothing about? They should allow Ijaw people own their land. How can the Edo state government be claiming ownership here when they have not done anything here. No primary school, no secondary school, no road, so if they own this place how come they don´t provide any basic amenities here. We have been crying since but nothing has been done. So the Ijaws own Okomu and anyone who thinks he can take the land from them is joking, the whole might of the Ijaw nation will deal with such a person¨ he stated. However the Public Relation Officer of the Oba of Benin, Mr Desmond Agbama, said “the issue of who owns the land is not debatable because it belongs to the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare 11 and the facts are there. The Ijaws are only creating tension where there is none. They are tenants in Benin land and I will advise them to respect themselves by abiding with the existing laws of the land”.

Health › There’s A New Use For Sperm – Delivering Cancer Drugs. by chily11(op): 8:21am On Dec 16, 2017
Standard chemotherapy is toxic to both cancer cells and normal cells, leading to symptoms like nausea, and limiting the dose a person can receive. But if chemotherapy drugs specifically targeted tumours, we could avoid this.

Haifeng Xu at the Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research in Germany and his team are experimenting with using sperm cells to take drugs to cancers in the female reproductive tract. When they loaded sperm cells with doxorubicin, a common chemo agent, and released them in a dish containing mini cervical cancer tumours, the sperm swam towards the tumours, killing 87 per cent of their cells within three days.

Crime › 50-year-old Man Allegedly Rapes Neighbour’s Seven-year-old Daughter by chily11(op): 7:53pm On Dec 14, 2017
A 50-year-old man, Usman Audu, has been remanded in Katsina prison custody till January 4, 2018 for allegedly raping a seven-year-daughter of his neighbour.

Audu, who resides at Dadin Sauki village in Baure Local Government Area of Katsina State, was said to have committed the offence on December 1, 2017 inside his bedroom.

The police told the court that Audu allegedly lured the girl from where she was hawking items to his room to commit the act.

He was arraigned before a Katsina Senior Magistrate’s Court on Thursday for a rape charge, which the police said was contrary to Section 283 of Penal code laws.
The victim’s father, Yazidu Ibrahim, reported the incident at Baure Divisional Police Headquarters, leading to Audu’s arrest.

The police further told the court that Audu, Ibrahim and the victim were residing in the same house in the village.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Sani Ado, said investigation was still ongoing and requested a new date for the case to be mentioned in court.

The presiding senior magistrate, Hajiya Adiza Mohammed Danja, adjourned the case until January 4, 2018 for mention, directing that Audu be remanded in prison custody till then.

Christianity Etc › Palestinian Christians And Muslims Unite Against Trump's Jerusalem by chily11(op): 8:07am On Dec 13, 2017
Less than an hour after U.S. President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, Palestinians protested by turning off the lights on the Christmas tree outside Bethlehem’s Church of the Nativity, the traditional birthplace of Jesus.

It was a timely reminder that while headlines focused on Islamist calls for uprisings and Trump’s references to Jewish historical ties, the president’s words also stirred deep feelings among the Palestinians’ small Christian community.

Coming out of the Sunday service in his Assyrian Catholic church in Jerusalem, Fredrick Hazo accused Trump of “dragging all the world into trouble”, and called on the U.S. leader to reverse his decision.

“We are united - Christians, Muslims, we are one,” said the 59-year-old Palestinian musician, standing in an alley in the heart of the Old City, surrounded by shops selling religious trinkets.

He was frustrated by the politics, but confident the delicate balance the three faiths kept in the holy city would prevail. “In this sacred place, God is protecting us all. We are guarded by his angels in Jerusalem,” Hazo added.

Christians make up around just one percent of the Palestinian population in Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem - though they punch above their weight in local and national politics.

Back in July, Hazo protested alongside Muslims against Israel’s installation of security scanners at the nearby al-Aqsa mosque - Islam’s third holiest site - after two Arab-Israeli gunmen shot dead two Israeli police officers at the site.

It removed the metal detectors after days of bloody clashes, scenes that have not been repeated in the city since Trump’s declaration.

Nairaland General › URGENT: Stop The Government Bill That Threatens People's Freedom In Nigeria by chily11(op): 4:53pm On Dec 12, 2017
The Nigerian government has just announced a public vote on a bill designed to take away the freedoms of Nigerian people. And if we don’t act now and vote against it before the 14th December, when the public hearing finishes, it could be too late.

The government has tried to make it sound like this ‘NGO bill’ is just about restricting the freedom of NGOs. But a quick Google search shows the public outrage this bill has already caused. It will have devastating effects on Nigerians - which is why they’re trying to pass it as quickly as possible, before too many people take action to stop it.

This so-called ‘NGO’ bill will keep Nigerians from freely sharing their opinions, holding open discussion forums or organising people to protest. The effects of this bill will be far wider than just on NGOs: this bill will shrink the freedoms of Nigerians and allow the government to control them.

The people in power are trying to rush this bill through, in order to quickly silence us.

Don’t let them.
Sign this petition to stop the NGO bill passing and we will take it, in person, to the public hearing in Abuja on the 13th and 14th December to represent your voice, show how much your freedoms of expression, speech and association matter to you - and stop this NGO bill in its tracks.

Art, Graphics & Video › Leonardo Da Vinci Sold For $450 Million by chily11(op):
A senior Abu Dhabi official said the Gulf emirate has paid the right price to acquire Leonardo da Vinci’s $450 million painting “Salvator Mundi,” to be displayed at the Louvre Abu Dhabi.

“We worked very closely with the broker on this piece and we bid on it and it was acquired, thank God, with the price we felt it was right for,” Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, chairman of the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture & Tourism, said on Monday at the Bloomberg Invest conference.

“It’s an exceptional piece,” he said. “A lot of us wait for something astonishing, astonishing doesn’t happen everyday.”

Two Princes and an Emirate: Record Da Vinci Spurs Many ‘Buyers’

He commented three days after the Saudi embassy in Washington said Prince Badr Al Saud acted as an intermediary to help the Abu Dhabi department buy the painting at a Christie’s auction. The New York Times reported that the painting had been purchased by a Saudi prince called Badr bin Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Farhan al-Saud, a friend and associate of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The Wall Street Journal said the buyer was a proxy for the crown prince.

The painting, which depicts Jesus Christ holding a glass ball in one hand, was sold at Christie’s by Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev on Nov. 15.

“We have been eyeing this piece for some time,” Al Mubarak said. “We have seen first hand what Da Vinci means for any museum.”

Politics › Breaking: Russian President Orders Russian Forces To Start Pulling Out Of Syrian by chily11(op):
President Vladimir Putin on Monday ordered Russian forces in Syria to start withdrawing, saying that after a two year military campaign, Moscow and Damascus had achieved their mission of destroying Islamic State.

Putin made the announcement during a surprise visit to Russia’s Hmeymim air base in Syria’s Latakia Province where he held talks with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and addressed Russian military servicemen.

Russia first launched air strikes in Syria in September 2015 in its biggest Middle East intervention in decades, turning the tide of the conflict in Assad’s favor while dramatically increasing Moscow’s own influence in the Middle East.

Putin on Monday gave the order for Russian forces to start withdrawing to their permanent bases in Russia, the Kremlin said on its website.

“The task of fighting armed bandits here in Syria, a task that it was essential to solve with the help of extensive use of armed force, has for the most part, been solved and solved spectacularly,” Putin said, in remarks broadcast on Russian television.

“I congratulate you!,” Putin told Russian servicemen gathered at the base.

He was also quoted as saying that Russia would keep the Hmeymim air base as well as a naval facility at the Syrian port of Tartous.

Romance › A 19-year-old College Student's Whose Photos Went Viral Now Into Modeling(photo) by chily11(op):
Social media can be a powerful tool. Though it can often be a vehicle for trolls and negativity, sometimes it can make people's dreams come true.
That was recently the case for 19-year-old college student Anok Yai. Photos of the South Sudanese student taken during one of Howard University's homecoming events recently went viral and have led to some exciting career prospects.

The photos were posted on the Instagram account theSUNK and have since been liked over 11,000 times. But people didn't just like the photo — they also widely shared the post in an effort to get Yai noticed by modeling agencies.

The Plymouth State University student told The Boston Globe she didn't know what to expect when her photos first went viral.

"My phone just started vibrating rapidly for a long, long time," she told the Globe. "At first, I honestly thought someone made a meme of me or something."

The photos certainly spread as quickly as a meme, though the intent was much more positive. Yai says she's heard from three modeling agencies so far, which is more than she ever expected.

"It was a dream that I always wanted, but I wasn't sure if it was going to happen," she said.

Though it's unclear what she will do next, Yai told Yahoo Lifestyle that she's taking her time to make the decision that's right for her.

"I’ve had a few offers here and there," she told Yahoo. "But I’m keeping my options open for now, before I make a decision on who I want to commit to."

Whether she jumps headfirst into modeling or continues her studies, she seems to have plenty of promising opportunities ahead of her.

Romance › How £1 Saved My Life And Found Me Love- Becki Cobb (photos) by chily11(op): 7:37pm On Dec 10, 2017
This love story starts with a girl who collapsed on a Brighton street and a boy who took a bus using a borrowed £1 which would later save his life.
Simon and Becki lived in different corners of the country. They both had a stroke when they were young. They overcame disappointments and both had to learn to live with newly-acquired disabilities. Years later, they would meet by chance and fall in love.

Becki Cobb was 21 in 2011 and about to start her final term at university. She had just returned from a visit to Paris to see a friend and decided to walk to her part-time job at a clothes shop in Brighton.

"It was a beautiful sunny morning, but after 20 minutes I started to feel really light-headed. I had an apple in my bag, but as I tried to bite into it I dropped it and then fell onto my knees and I just couldn't get back up.

"I felt like I'd fainted but I was conscious."
She was found by two policemen who were concerned how unwell she looked, but Becki kept telling them she had to get to work. They said they would take her, but only if she was able to get into the car by herself.

"I couldn't open the door. My left-hand side was getting paralysed so it was getting very weak and all my muscles were stopping. I remembered lying on one of their laps because they were saying 'you need to keep talking to us' but I was just so tired.
"The policemen told me I was saying things that didn't make sense but in my head I was talking perfectly coherently."

An ambulance was called and Becki was in hospital within 20 minutes, but her memory remains blank until 22:00 that night. She has relied on other people to fill in the gaps.
The hospital contacted her parents in Lincolnshire and told them to get there quickly because it was not known if Becki would survive.

The medical staff were mystified. Although Becki was showing symptoms of stroke, they held back from that diagnosis because, at 21, she would have been unusually young to have one.
To rule it out, they called-in a consultant on her day off. When she examined Becki, the consultant confirmed the medical team's original thinking. It was a stroke.

Simon Commins was 17 and studying for his A levels in Chester in 2004 with plans to be an engineer. He skipped class early that afternoon to get to his job as a swimming pool lifeguard.
He decided he'd go to the gym before his shift and borrowed £1 from a friend to pay for a bus ticket. He says that, at the time, he wasn't aware the pound would save his life - had he been penniless and forced to walk, he may not have been near anyone who could help him when he needed it.

Just before he reached his stop, Simon began to feel light-headed.
"It was as if there was a loss of conscious control. The second I stood up my legs felt really heavy, every step felt like I was getting heavier and my vision was getting quite bad."

At 21 and 17 Becki and Simon were unusually young to have a stroke.
It was determined that Becki's was caused by a blood clot which passed through a hole in the heart between the two upper chambers which had failed to close as normal when she was growing up. The resultant hole is known as a patent foramen ovale (PFO).

Little did Simon know, but the daily nosebleeds he'd been having were a sign that he had a genetic disorder called Hereditary Haemorrhagic Telangiectasia (HHT). This stops some blood vessels from developing properly and they build up with blood, known as arteriovenous malformations (AVMs). These AVMs were in Simon's brain where they ruptured, causing a haemorrhage and stroke.

According to brain injury charity Headway, about 130,000 people are admitted to hospital each year in the UK with stroke - about 300 of those are aged under 25.
Warning signs include face drooping, difficulty in lifting the arms and slurred speech. It can also include a sudden, intense headache, dizziness, vision problems and confusion.

Health › Staring Into A Baby’s Eyes Puts Her Brain Waves And Yours In Sync by chily11(op): 11:25am On Dec 10, 2017
When you lock eyes with a baby, it’s hard to look
away. For one thing, babies are fun to look at.
They’re so tiny and cute and interesting. For
another, babies love to stare back. I remember my
babies staring at me so hard, with their eyebrows
raised and unblinking eyes wide open.

They would have killed in a staring contest.
This mutual adoration of staring may be for a good
reason. When a baby and an adult make eye contact,
their brain waves fall in sync , too, a new study finds.
And those shared patterns of brain activity may
actually pave the way for better communication
between baby and adult: Babies make more sweet,
little sounds when their eyes are locked onto an adult
who is looking back.

The scientists report the results
online November 28 in the Proceedings of the
National Academy of Sciences .

Psychologist Victoria Leong of the University of
Cambridge and Nanyang Technological University in
Singapore and colleagues invited infants into the lab
for two experiments. In the first, the team outfitted 17
8-month-old babies with EEG caps, headwear
covered with electrodes that measure the collective
behavior of nerve cells across the brain.

The infants
watched a video in which an experimenter, also
outfitted in an EEG cap, sung a nursery rhyme while
looking either straight ahead at the baby, at the baby
but with her head turned at a 20-degree angle, or
away from the baby and with her head turned at a 20-
degree angle.
