Car TalkRe: Is It Wrong To Drive Automatic Transmissions With Both Legs? by chimah3(op): 10:10pm On Nov 30, 2014
adanny01:
I have been told once by someone that only racing drivers do and are required to drive automatics with both legs.

Personally, i drive automatic with the right leg only and as usual drive manual with both legs.

I believe it is bad for a street driver to drive an automatic with two legs especially if the driver drives a manual occassionally. This is because the manual trains your left leg to depress the clutch fully and when you use that leg on the brake pedal, that will spell disaster. It will take considerable amount of time to adjust between Manual and Automatic leading to very bad driving on both vehicles during the transition period. The manual driver using left foot on brakes on the automatic will find himself either braking too hard or too soft both could cause accidents. It is also bad for the transmission, brake systems.

The convincing question is if a driver uses left leg on brakes with automatic, which leg will he use on brakes with the manual drive because it is actually impossible to drive manual, braking and clutching with the same leg which in most is simultaneous.

My suspicion is that this op may not know how to drive a manual.

Look at it this way, it is standard to drive a manual with left leg on clutch pedal and right leg for gas and brake pedals. The legs and brain are trained in that process. So if you go to automatic where only the clutche pedal is missing, you just can leave your left leg hanging while the right leg continue the function it was trained to usually do. If you change, the training in the brain changes so it will be a new learning process since the left leg is now braking (a different function).

In the same vein, my aunt and my mother had to go to the village one night with my mum's auto car but my mum doesnt drive in the night and my aunt does but drives a manual. It was seriously awful as my aunt insisted she must use left leg on the brakes. The result was acceleration and braking at the same time. It took ages before she could manouver out of the parking lot and out of the compound.
U making it sound like there are Pre-defined foot rules for driving!! Which is NOT!! I guess its jus different strokes for different folks !

I drive with both legs dts wat I am most comfortable with. My reaction to emergency is faster with both legs though top drivin schs recommend one leg but dt doesn't do it for me. Wat matters is wat guarantees safety n wat one is most comfortable in cool. My two legs must b put to use n I ve so mastered it dt it comes naturally for me.
Pls don't try to b like me ooo bc u may nt live to tell d story undecided

Drivin auto with both legs is for few ppl who r usually d exception to d rule tongue

Its jst lik d habit of removin my footwear b4 drivin, I can't drive well with my shoes on or any footwear it must b first removed angry u see nw there is no right or wrong abt some things. Its abt wat one feel comfortable n safe in while driving. D ultimate aim of drivin is to get to ur destination safely, wateva guarantees this is okay
Exactly!!! There is no right or wrong in this! I guess we 'two footed' drivers are jus specially gifted grin

Very very wrong. If u try that in a driving test they will never give u a drivers license until u learn how to drive with one foot. But then Nigeria is a country where everything goes, u can always get ur license through the back door without any driving test.
Well welcome to naija ! Lol

Hello All,
I drive my automatic rav4 with both feet.
It's a choice.
I drove manuals for upwards of 15 years before changing to automatic.
I find that it gives me more balance breaking with my left foot.
Preference!!!
Bless you sir! Choice it is!!! + I also learned how to drive with a manual transmission! So I guess it jus stuck to us! Good to know I'm not alone in this..lol

When I first started driving automatics, I was using both legs until my brother inlaw told me to only use one leg and I got used to it under five minutes, the adverse effect in using two legs is sharp breaking which is bad for the car at the back.
Depressing the brake and accelerator together only revs the car, I don't know any other cons. But depressing both on speed, then you are ON YOUR OWN.
'Sharp breaking'...very true! Happens a lot! Tbh I think that's the only con I can place in using. Both legs...cus I get to change the break pads very often!

Was having an argument with some friends and family and they all said I was wrong for driving Automatic transmissions with both legs. I actually feel more confident and comfortable on the road using both legs.

Infact to be honest I don't know how to use one foot.

Please guys let me hear your thoughts on this, reasons and all...thanks!

Sure many would learn from this too!
