The Nigerian Senate and House of Reps have summoned Chief of Army Staff, Mr. Tukur Buratai over a clash with Shiite Muslims in Zaria which led to the death of over 60 people.

The Director General of the Department of State Services, Lawan Daura, and “heads of other security agencies,” would be summoned by a House joint Committee on Army/National Security/Intelligence and Public Safety.

Also to appear before the House are the top leaders of the Islamic Movement, “as well as other stakeholders as the House may deem fit to discuss the issue.”

“The Chief of Army Staff will have to come and testify before the committee as an important stakeholder. The committee has the mandate of the House to invite him. The DG, as well as the DSS too, is relevant to this investigation. It will involve heads of other security agencies since the committee will be looking at the security implications or otherwise of the clash. The leaders of the Islamic Movement will also have to come and state their side of the matter before the committee can reach any reasonable conclusions," a National Assembly official said.

Few days after the former Head of State and
Presidential candidate of the All Progressives
Congress, APC, Major General Muhammadu
Buhari, retd, explained in an affidavit submitted to
the Independent National Electoral Commission,
INEC, that all his academic credentials were with
the Military Board, the Army have stated that they
do not keep the certificates of any serving or
retired officer or soldier.
General Buhari is contesting the presidential
election for the fourth time under different
political parties including the defunct All Nigeria
People’s Party, ANPP and the Congress for
Progressive Change, CPC, but the issue of his
qualifications had never been controversial until
the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP,
recently described him as a ‘’semi- illiterate.’’
However, against the backdrop of Buhari’s
affidavit in court, a military source said ‘’that the
Army can not keep anybody’s original certificate
because it is the personal property of the owner,’’
adding that such original certificates were only
needed at the point of entry into the service.
According to the source, the Military only kept
photocopies of credentials of officers and soldiers
in their personal files that were in the military
secretary’s office.
“The original certificate of any officer or soldier is
only needed at the point of entry into the service
either as a cadet officer entering the Nigerian
Defence Academy, or the recruitment officers
when interviewing recruits to be sent to the depot
for training. That is so, because they are needed
to verify what were in the photocopies supplied
by them or from the necessary examining
bodies.”
The source further stated that anybody claiming
that his original certificates were with the Military
Secretary (Army), had ‘’ulterior motive(s) or
something he or she cannot explain.’’
He further added, “Let me tell you now, in the
Navy, the Navy Secretary, NAVSEC, keep the
documents of all Naval officers and ratings and
not their original certificates which are their
personal property.

No fewer than 50 persons, yesterday,
sustained various degrees of injuries, while about
20 shops were destroyed, following a
confrontation between some illegal revenue collectors
from Onitsha South Local Government Area and
traders at the Millenium Merchants and Importers
Association Markets, Main Market, Onitsha.
Trouble started when Onitsha South Local
Government Area Chairman, Lady Ann
Chukwuneke, allegedly stormed the market with
over 100 youths to collect revenue from the
traders and at the same time clamp down on
street trading in the area.
A source said the council officials started
dismantling some of the shops, which did not go
down well with the traders.
This, it was learned, resulted in a free-for-all
between the traders and revenue collectors,
following which over 50 persons sustained
injuries.
Among those reportedly injured were the Vice
Chairman of the market, Prince Peter Okoye and
Obiora Otigba.
The traders began to protest, with placards
bearing inscriptions such as “The council
chairman is not a good mother,” “Governor
Obiano should remove her,” “We have lost huge
sums of money to hoodlums.”
Governor intervenes
Reacting to the development, the President of
Anambra State Markets Amalgamation Traders
Association, AMATAS, Chief Okwudili
Ezenwankwo, said the council chairman had no
right to storm the market and destroy the wares
of the traders, some of who, he said, lost huge
sums of money to hoodlums.
He said: “The governor directed me to come and
calm the traders and to reopen their shops, that
he is looking into the crisis. I am happy the
governor is aware because he does not want
crisis in the state.”
Market’s Chairman reacts
Earlier, the chairman of the market, Mr. Valentine
Ezechukwu, and former chairman, Chief Obiora
Nwankwo, described the action of the council
boss as uncalled for, adding that they had earlier
discussed with the chairman on the way forward
for the market and wondered why she stormed
the market without notice.
They said: “We gave a token to the council, yet
they stormed the market demanding N50,000 per
shop.”
Three traders, Uche Okolie, John Achukwu, from
Warri and one Joseph claimed to have lost N 2.5
million, N360,000 and N 100,000, respectively, to
the hoodlums.
