The mood around the Emirates on Saturday afternoon should be optimistic yet many of the grumbles of recent seasons could be evident given Arsenal's alarming lack of transfer activity over the past few months. This was meant to be the summer when the club spent big yet, as things stand, Arsène Wenger's only fresh recruit is the young French attacker Yaya Sanogo. In contrast, Aston Villa have been busy and, with Christian Benteke remaining in side, Paul Lambert will be expecting his young side to have the maturity to avoid a repeat of last season's relegation fight. Swansea (Possible, 4-4-1-1): Vorm; Rangel, Williams, Amat, B Davies; Routledge, Britton, Shelvey, Hernandez; Michu; Bony. Out: De Guzman (concussion). Manchester United (Possible, 4-4-1-1): De Gea; Jones, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra; Valencia, Carrick, Anderson, Cleverley; Welbeck; Van Persie. Out: Fletcher (colitis), Hernandez, Rafael (both hamstring), Nani (groin), Young (unspecified). Test: Carrick (eye infection). Referee: Phil Dowd. Matches: 26, R4 Y74. Team News Jonathan de Guzman will miss Swansea's Premier League opener against Manchester United due to concussion. The Dutch midfielder was hurt in a training ground collision with Dirk Kuyt while on international duty and could also miss the first leg of the Europa League play-off against Petrolul Ploiesti. Pablo Hernandez and Jonjo Shelvey are available again after their respective groin injury and illness, while Wilfried Bony is set to feature despite only arriving back from Ivory Coast's friendly against Mexico in New Jersey late last on Thursday night. Meanwhile, David Moyes must decide whether to include Wayne Rooney in the squad for his first Premier League game as Manchester United manager at Swansea. Rooney completed 65 minutes of his first game of the summer when England defeated Scotland on Wednesday and is expected to be on the bench at the Liberty Stadium. Rafael and Javier Hernandez and wing duo Nani and Ashley Young are all expected to be sidelined, so Wilfried Zaha could be involved, although Michael Carrick should recover from the eye infection which kept him out of England's friendly. Match Notes The last time Manchester United started a league game under new management, team-bus driver Derek Sutton sat alongside Alex Ferguson on the bench at Oxford United, such was the haphazard nature of the club in November 1986. Twenty-seven years on, David Moyes takes the reins of the champions of England for the first time in South Wales, but after a difficult pre-season, the Scot will be more interested in three points than historical footnotes. Newly promoted Hull City will have their task cut out to take away any points from a Chelsea team which is rejuvenated by the return of their coach Jose Mourinho. However, the Blues must not underestimate the Tigers despite being unbeaten against in the past four games (W2 D2), especially because Hull, now, boast a strong squad. Chelsea Despite completing three signings of Andre Schurrle, Marco van Ginkel and Mark Schwarzer, the only thing that has been talked about, when there has been any news about Chelsea, is the difference that Portuguese tactician Jose Mourinho will make to the side. He is expected to bring out the best in the amazing talent already present at the Stamford Bridge. The fans would love to see the MaZaKar (Mata, Hazard and Oscar) partnership blossom while at the same time make enough room to fit in Kevin de Bruyne and Andre Schurrle into the eleven. The attacking midfielder area will be hotly contested next season as Mourinho finds himself spoilt for choice in that area. The striking options are what worries one the most, what with the dismal form of Fernando Torres and Demba Ba and relative inexperience of Romelu Lukaku. ‘The Special One’ is still attempting to sign Wayne Rooney while keeping Samuel Eto’o as a back up. Hull City The Tigers will be buoyed with the new arrivals of Huddlestone and Jake Livermore from Tottenham. They have also made other key signings of Maynor Figueroa from Wigan and also Curtis Davies from Birmingham to shore up their defence and give it an experienced look. Ex-Besiktas keeper and Scotland no.1 Allan McGregor has gotten a lot of exposure during the pre-season friendlies and has kept his fair share of clean sheets and will be looking to continue his good form in the Premier League as well. Steve Bruce, having helped Hull finish second in the Championship, will be returning to the Premier League. However, he will be hoping that the dismal start he had with Sunderland in 2010-11 of just 11 points from the first 13 games does not repeat with the Tigers. A tough lead into the League for them as they face both Chelsea and Manchester City inside the first three matches. Hence Bruce faces a tough task of keeping the energies of the newly promoted team high and mighty in the first month. Form Guide Chelsea WLWWW 11 August ‘13 Chelsea 2 - 1 AS Roma (Club Friendlies) 08 August ‘13 Real Madrid 3 - 1 Chelsea (Guinness Champions Cup) 05 August ‘13 AC Milan 0 -2 Chelsea (Guinness Champions Cup) 02 August ‘13 Chelsea 2 - 0 Inter (Guinness Champions Cup) 25 Jul ‘13 Indonesia All Stars 1 - 8 Chelsea (Club Friendlies) Hull City WWLDD 10 August ‘13 Hull 3 - 0 Real Betis (Club Friendlies) 30 Jul ‘13 Peterborough 0 - 1 Hull (Club Friendlies) 27 Jul ‘13 Birmingham 2 - 1 (Club Friendlies) 24 Jul ‘13 Braga 0 -0 Hull (Club Friendlies) 21 July ‘13 Hull 0 - 0 Sheffield Wednesday (Club Friendlies) Probable Line-ups Chelsea: Cech, Ivanovic, Cahill, Terry, Cole, Lampard, Ramires, Hazard, de Bruyne, Schurrle, Lukaku Juan Mata and David Luiz have been nursing niggles during the preseason friendlies and have been used very carefully by Mourinho in the fear of worsening their injuries at the start of the season. The partnership of de Bruyne and Lukaku has proved fruitful so far and should be persisted with. Frank Lampard has gotten rid of his Achilles probably and played for a while in England’s international friendly against Scotland. He could be drafted into the starting eleven. Terry and Cahill should cover the goal with Cole and Ivanovic on the flanks. Hull: McGregor, Rosenior, Figueroa, Davies, Bruce, Huddlestone, Livermore, Koren, Brady, Graham, Sagbo Irish international Stephen Quinn will be the only one unavailable due to injury. New arrivals from the Spurs, Tom Huddlestone and Jake Livermore (loan) should jump right into the starting eleven alongside captain Robert Koren and Robbie Brady in the midfield. Up front, Danny Graham will be trusted with to lead the attack with new signing Yannick Sagbo. Maynor Figueroa and Curtis Davies should make up the backline with Rosenior and Alex Bruce. Another new signing Allan McGregor, who picked the ball out of the net three time against England in midweek, will be between the posts. IBADAN—The Academic Staff Union of Universities has described as a misrepresentation of facts, the comment made by the Co-ordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, that the striking university lecturers demanded N92 billion as earned allowances in the 2009 agreement. According to the union, which spoke through the Chairman, University of Ibadan chapter, Dr. Olusegun Ajiboye, the Federal Government and the minister are not telling the truth. In a statement, the union said: “I want Nigerians to ask the minister where she got her figure of N92 billion from. There was never a time that ASUU made a demand that is up to N92 billion. I think the 92 billion naira is just the imagination of the Minister of Finance and Co-ordinating Minister of the Economy.” Dr. Ajiboye clarified the issue noting that the earned allowances jointly calculated with the Federal Government and ASUU in the 2009 agreement was N87 billion and it covers allowances for three and a half years for thousands of lecturers in Nigerian universities. He stressed that the N87 billion was a compromise made by ASUU by scaling down from N127 billion to N87 billion. The university lecturer urged Nigerians to say no to people whom he said were bent on destroying public institutions. He said: “This is a government that signed an agreement with us on January 24, 2012 to the effect that they would inject N100 billion as funding into the universities in the first one month and that before the end of 2012, they would inject another N300 billion. The same government did not put down a kobo to any of these universities. “So, it is a sad story that we are hearing now that the government cannot meet a demand of N87 billion whereas the government said that they would keep on putting N400 billion annually for three years consecutively to the tune of about N1.2 trillion. If the government is now saying it cannot meet N87billion, Nigerians should know that this is not a government that can be trusted for anything. “The total amount of earned allowances for academic staff in Nigerian universities for the three and a half years computed together with the government was N87 billion. And that was agreed based on negotiations because we started from N127billion and it was reduced to N107 billion before we now got to 15 percent of salary payment of each person. It is called earned allowances and it is the sum total of the excess work which academic staff had done for the past three and a half years. You are now telling Nigerians that this is what these people are asking for as if it’s a new thing. Nigerians should know that it is what the people have worked for and not N92 billion. It is fallacy and what these people (federal government) are just pushing is propaganda.” Source : http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/08/ASUU-faults-okonjo-iweala-over-n92bn-demand-by-union/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |
MAIDUGURI—THE Joint Task Force (JTF), ‘Operation Restore Order’ in Borno State, has faulted media report, Wednesday, crediting the killing of the top Boko Haram Commander, Momodu Bama, to the Military Special Operation Unit, Mubi Battalion, Adamawa. Operation Restore Order in Borno insisted that Momodu Bama was killed last week in Bama Local Government Area of Borno State by Maiduguri JTF troops, during the Boko Haram attack on Mobile Police Base and Bama town on August 4, 2013. It would be recalled that a N25 million reward was promised anybody who could give information on the whereabouts of the Boko Haram commander. The JTF Spokesman in Borno State, Lieutenant Colonel Sagir Musa, in a statement in Maiduguri, said the report was not only misleading, but not true as Momodu Bama, a.k.a Abu Saad, and his father, Abatcha Flatari, were all killed during the attack. Sagir said contrary to the report that a bounty of N10 million was placed on Momodu Bama by the security agencies, it was actually a bounty of N25 million, being the Second-in-Command to Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau. Sagir said: “He (Momodu Bama) was on JTF wanted list of terrorist suspects who is an indigene of Bama Local Government Area, JTF had earlier placed N25 million bounty on him, being a member of the Boko Haram Shurra Committee, but we have made a tremendous achievement in the recent Boko Haram attacks in Bama where we killed him alongside his father, Abatcha Flatari”. Sagir noted that Abatcha Flatari was before his death, the spiritual mentor of Boko Haram in-charge of indoctrinating child foot soldiers who were mainly abducted children. Nollywood movie director Chima Okoroji recently narrated his first encounter with controversial Nigerian actress Tonto Dikeh who called her colleague Mercy Johnson idiot few weeks ago. In another blow to the actress, film director Chima Okoroji alleged he engaged in a serious war of words with the actress on a new movie set in Enugu recently over her rudeness. While filming the movie titled African Pride, Tonto Dikeh allegedly fought with her senior colleagues like Ken Okonkwo, Ngozi Nwosu and many others on the movie set. She eventually walked out on all of them after she was called to order. Hear Chima in his own words below; “While on set, she kept on insulting, fighting and quarreling with everybody. She was very rude and uncouth on set. Whenever I tried to correct her, the producer, Kaycee (Filmark), will intervene and beg me not to confront her. But I got pissed and eventually called her to order when I could no longer take her insults and rudeness. She immediately flared up and started insulting me publicly in the presence of my cast and crew members. And when some of her senior colleagues tried to intervene, she also tongue lashed them. Tonto walked out on us the moment she was done with her insults and refused to shoot till the next day after many pleadings by the producer. She even threatened to arrest and deal with me for daring to call her to order on set. Another problem I had with Tonto on set was her too much drinking and smoking, which she uses to delay my production. It was so bad that the owners of the house where we were shooting told us to leave because they were tired of inhaling the smoke from her incessant smoking. She needs help and prayer,” “Tonto messed up my set, insulted me and many stars on set, including Ken Okonkwo, Ngozi Nwosu, Prince Nwafor and others by walking out on my set for a whole day, because I called her to order - Chima Okoroji alleged. Her attitude problem became obvious when she took to Twitter few weeks ago to insult her colleague Mercy Johnson, calling her all sorts of names for resuming acting months after giving birth. Mercy Johnson ignored all her insults, a move that gave MJ favour from several movie producers who bombarded her with scripts. Maturity is indeed a virtue. Adamawa state Police Command has on Tuesday paraded a 24 year old man Bappa Alti of Gamji Village, in Gombi local Government Area of Adamawa state for beheading his 5year old son Buba Bappah for the sum of one Million Naira which he intends to use in purchasing cows. The command’s spokesman D. S. P Muhammad Ibrahim said the arrest of Alti, was sequel to a complaint that the suspect has earlier in the day took the boy to his farm only to return without him and could not give a convincing explanation about the boy’s whereabouts. D. S. P Ibrahim explained that, following the failure of Alti to convince the grandfather of the deceased when he enquired about the whereabouts of his grandson sparked suspicious about the I’ll motives of Alti which led to the involvement of the Police in the matter. According to the PPRO, following the dissatisfaction of the grandfather by the explanation of his son, he mobilized a search team, which on arriving the farm found the mutilated body of the deceased child. “The grandfather mobilized some men for a search and unfortunately on reaching the farm, they discovered the dead body without a head”, he added. D. S .P Ibrahim maintained that, the grand father (Alti Alhaji Guja) reported the matter to the Police which led to the arrest of the murderous father; who also confessed in the course of investigation to have killed his son with his own hands using a stick and a machete in anticipation of a million Naira from one Alhaji Sange Hassan of the village. The principal suspect Alti Bappa while fielding questions from newsmen confessed to have committed the crime, saying that it was Alhaji Sange Hassan that motivated him to bring a human head for N 1Million just as he blamed the devil for manipulating his spirit to commit such a hideous crime while expressing suitable penitence for Allah’s forgiveness. Bappa said he wanted to use the money to buy cattle for rearing and also take adequate care of his family, most especially his aged parents. However in his response, the alleged ritualist, (Alh. Sanje Hassan) who is the ward head of Ganji village denied the allegation, insisting that it was a set up aimed at blackmailing his person. D.S.P Muhammad said that as soon as investigations are concluded the suspects will be charged to Court for prosecution.
