The CITIZENS QUEST FOR TRUTH INITIATIVE on Tuesday 16th June 2020, visited the all-important Calabar- Itu Highway, to assess the situation of the road. From our findings, the stretch from Calabar-Itu bridge to Odukpani needs urgent remedial works or maintenance, to ease the burden of commuters on that road, pending the commencement of eventual dualization of that road.

The road is one federal project that has attracted a lot of criticisms to successive federal governments, even the present administration of President Muhammadu Buhari is not spared by his critics. This is because of the economic importance of the road as it links two major States in the Niger Delta Region, Akwa Ibom and Cross River States.

For over 10 years, the over 130 kilometers Calabar-Itu Highway has been deteriorating steadily, when a part of it gets cut off from the other, palliative measures are only taken by government agencies to fix it. Even when contracts are awarded for its repairs, not much is done to save the over 30-year-old road which have left many to express speculations and worries if the road project has been abandoned.

During the tour to the much-talked about road to have a first-hand information on its true status, CITIZENS QUEST observed that the bad state of the road has affected tanker, truck and trailer drivers who have severally threatened to block the Calabar-Itu Highway with their trucks until governments come to their rescue

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike says the Nigeria Governors Forum has become a toothless bulldog because it has lost focus on its role in defending the rule of law in the country.

Governor Wike said the Forum used to be non-partisan and a powerful voice on national issues.

He noted that since the All Progressives Congress(APC) took over the leadership of the body in 2015, Governors have turned to beggars.

In an ideal democracy which Nigeria is copiously adopting, separation of powers is one of the pillars on which Government is anchored.

Notwithstanding the above, they still complement each other in the onerous task of nation-building and in guaranteeing the positive growth and development of the country.

When the 9th National Assembly came into being, and the leadership emerged with the backing of the ruling party, unlike the 8th Assembly that preceded it, the people expected that there will be a better working relationship between the executive, the legislature and of course, the judiciary.

Though they exist independently, they are meant to perform the role of checks and balances. In doing so, they avoid encroaching on each other’s responsibilities and constitutionally assigned roles.

As the representative of the people, the National Assembly should be seen to align to their constitutional responsibilities and shun all forms of political and party leaning, in the course of discharging their duties. The above can not be said of this 9th Assembly.

The 8th Assembly were rancorous with the executive leading to myriads of challenges and endless crisis arising from disagreements over the manner of emergence of the leadership of the NASS, budget padding and delay budget passage, jumbo pay, refusal to clear nominees of the executive timely, among other issues.

The leadership crisis lingered beyond expectation which led to defection from one political party to another.

As expected, the Board of the African Development Bank (AfDB) has agreed with the United States to appoint an independent attorney to look at the whistleblower complaints against the Bank President, Akinwumi Adesina. They just issued a communique on hursday. There are no surprises,

Many here have written that African Union and AfDB should just ignore the U.S. and carry on. That would be a momentous stupidity because if the U.S. treasury classifies AfDB as a “corrupt institution”, rightly or wrongly, the bank will crash.” You do not mess up with America when it comes to banking ordinance because the U.S. dollar and its banking institutions run the world.


Even the AfDB President will not fault the conclusion of the Board as he does know the implications of going against the wishes of the U.S Treasury.

His meeting with Nigerian President would have fixed his problems, but unfortunately, Nigeria is a spoke in the wheel of global banking – and the U.S. owns the whole.
