Thanks Gabry. I'm thinking the hampers may just do the trick for my landlord and neigbours. One hamper per family should do it. I actually think giving the oyinbos something Nigerian will be great but what and where do I find it? The one thing that readily comes to mind is a top (shirt) made with Nigerian wax or something similar. But I have no idea where to buy that already made (sewing/making one now is out of the question because I'm sure no taylor is accepting jobs now). Does anyone think a turkey (frozen ofcourse) for each oyinbo is a good idea? I'm still at sea on what to get for my Nigerian ogas. Guys, gals, come on! |
I live & work in Lagos & need ideas for xmas gift for the following people. I'm totally at loss of what to get for them: 1. Landlord 2. three neighbours (all married with kids) 3. Three Nigerian bosses (one female and two male 4. Two male white bosses (one American and one European) The above people are all educated and live in Lagos. My budget for all presents is about N50k Please give me ideas that can be executed in Lagos with the above budget. |
@ poster, What is the purpose of the loan you seek? If you plan to start a business, what you need is equity/long term debt not a commercial bank loan. In that case, you need a venture capitalist firm like GROFIN (Diamond bank) or First Funds (First Bank). These firms will ask you for a detailed business plan, after the evaluation of your plan and identifying an exit strategy, they will advance you the funds you need structured as equity or debt. But they will likely be involved in the running of your business (like a seat on the board). If you have been in business for a while (say one year or more), then it is very possible to get a loan from a commercial bank in Nigeria where collateral will not be an issue (but your business must be profitable and generating positive cash flows) though CBN frawns as commercial banks that lend without collateral. If you require more clarification or have more questions, please feel free to post them |
That Okada is banned on highways is fine. Nobody can fault that. I live and work in Lagos but I have a problem identifying the 'major highways' that are affected by the ban. I wonder how an okada man will figure out which highways not to ply. I think the government should embark on an enlightenment campaign (especially on the radio using pidgin english) listing all the highways affected. If this is not done, what the governor has done is to give the police and LASMA officials a meal ticket. |

I drive a 2001 passat. It has given me nothing but trouble since I got it. On top of everything, the parts are expensive. When the trouble became too much I went online and did some research. Guess what - the passat was labeled a lemon!! It was recalled many times. Maybe I was unlucky with the car. I've only had it for 2 and half years and already it's almost impossible to continue to drive it so I have to change immediately. |
@Dantitiki, Have been calling your line but you didn't pick up. Is this car still available? |
I am totally in support of the Guardian (the source of the wirte-up). There is absolutely no need for this Havard training. However, even if there was, would it not be more cost effective to bring the lecturer(s) down here to spend a few days and talk to the governors? Can you imagine what it will cost this nation for all 36 state governors + FCT minister to travel to the US? Mind you, no governor will travel alone. Every one of them will travel with a retinue of staff. I believe the main motivation for this is the opportunity to travel and collect undeserved allowances for themselves and their staff. How many of them will stay in class? Won't they go shopping during lectures? |
^^ the spelling of ocean is wrong. S/he missed out the 'n'. The website opens alright, but everything is in french. |
Hi, Sorry to pitch in here. But I have a related problem. I drive a 2001 passat. Mine overheats (rather, the coolant level drops and the indicator comes on) if the A/c is used for more than an hour. Or in heavy traffic without A/C. Could it be caused by the same weak gasket? Does anybody have any ideas? Will be grateful for your advice. |
Hi Midas, Sent you a mail about a week ago. It would be nice to get a response. |
Driving is habitual. So how you learnt has a huge influence on how you drive. If you learnt to drive barefoot, driving with shoes will not feel right and vice versa. Same goes for seat belt, seating close to the steering wheel, e.t.c. In my opinion, driving with shoes is best. Why? Well, the best drivers in the world (think formula 1) drive with their shoes on! |
I have N2.4m |

if you don't know something, just keep quiet, the 2005 and 2007 have the same body style,Oga, Nobody is talking about body style here. No need to resort to insults. Where are the body side mouldings on your vehicle, where are the fog lights? where is the leather wrapped steering wheel? Being here means we all have means to the internet. A little research will tell anybody the truth. |
@ poster, The car advertised does not look like the SE model of 2007 Xterra. A mistake perhaps? I hope I'm wrong. Please check and confirm. |
How are you planning to do this? Is it going to be a subscription service (where pple will log in and do the checks themselves) or do we have to submit requests like we're doing presently? If the latter, I dare say you'ld be overwhemed by requests and very quickly your advantage (quick service) will disappear. You may have heard that banks are issuing credit cards but most of them actually are debit cards. You have to buy dollars and deposit. There are some credit cards out there. I know my visa card from Diamond Bank is a real credit card. Works like a charm on the net, works outside the country, 45 days credit. You don't have to deposit nothing. Spend in dollars, settle in naira. Nigerian banks are coming of age. |
@ poster, I don't think the situation is as bad as it appears. Here are my thoughts: 1. The bank has not communicated to you in writing that you have been dismissed. You need to get the HR manager to say something one way or another. 2. Please review your offer letter. what does it say about termination? one or two weeks notice or one month's salary in lieu of notice is usually required from either side. Check if the bank has fulfiled its own side of the bargain. 3. I hope you are conversant with the policies of the bank you worked for. Most banks have a policy on matters like yours. i.e. what happens when a staff fails to come to work due to ill health for a stipulated period of time, e.t.c. 3. You must have friends in a bank where you worked for eight months! They can always let you know where things stand with HR. Ask them to find out for you. 4. Like has been said else where on this thread, visiting twice and not meeting the HR manager is not sufficient to arrive at the conclusions some have already drawn here. Camp outside his office if you have to!! 5. I know that some banks do outsource the verification of results to third parties. If yours came back negative, that automatically places the bank on enquiry about further dealings with you. Also, you cannot be the only person who attended that university in that bank. So how come the results of the others got verified and yours did not check out? Seek out your alumni in the bank and ask them if they had issues. If the exams and records department changed location, it could not have affected only you! Finally, your case is strange because most banks I know (I have worked in four of them and have friends in many others) would even help offset some (if not all) of your bill and be more supportive. The only reason I can think of that may be responsible for your current 'limbo' status is that they are trying to verify your your result again based on the new information you provided. Until they satisfy themselves about the status of your qualification, it may not make sense to spend money on you or allow you back into the system. I would advise that you look for another job in the interim. If you're having difficulty defending your 'exit' from your former bank, then stop referencing it in your CV and move on. As for those critizing the bank, please cut it some slack. We have not heard the bank's side of the story! |
@ Saujee/Babeisme This is accidented car. I hope you already aware. No, I didn't know that. You probably saved a life right there. I cannot thank you guys enough for the good work you're doing with this VIN check service. Please keep it up. This country will surely get better with people like you in it. |
@ Babeisme, I need to take a decision on this vehicle. please assist with a VIN check: 1HGCM72554A014688 |
Don't remember having a meal on the same table with my dad when growing up. But it's now a tradition in my home - every sunday morning (after church). My kids now look forward to it so the wife tries to make it as elaborate as possible. I don't know to what extent we've bonded because of it, but it sure feels good. |
@Inspired, Kindly assist with this VIN check: 1HGCM72554A014688 Thanks |

@ FBS @chipass, like what?1. Let's say you know your husband is cheating on you and you had his mistress killed 2. As has been said elsewhere on this thread, say you had sex severally with your father-inlaw before you married your husband |
My advice (yes I'm married): Do not volunteer (provide without being asked) every information to your husband. By all means say the truth when asked about a specific thing/incident. Volunteer information only on a need-to-know basis. Believe it or not, some things are better left unsaid. |
@ topic, In my case, I held a margin account with a stock broking firm - i.e. I borrowed from the firm and secured it with the stocks I owned (GTB, FBN, Unilever, UBN, Conerstone, Dangote sugar). The ratio was 1:1 meaning I could borrow to the limit of the value of my personal portfolio. Guess what. I borrowed about 80% of the value of my portfolio to finance the purchase of some stocks in the margin account with the hope of making some extra money. When the bubble burst, what followed was total devastation. The stock broking firm put me under intense pressure to pay down their loan which was running at 22%p.a. I gave them instruction to sell the stocks from my margin account to liquidate the loan. Behold they could not find buyers for some of the stocks (a situation I thought would never arise). To cut a long story short, I ended up selling all the the stocks in my personal portfolio (which had also shrunk) to pay off the loan but it was not sufficient to clean up the balance. Now I owe N1.6m at 22% p.a. They visit and write me letters everyday to pay off the outstanding balance. I've told them to stay away but I know they wont. To digress a little, I believe a new bubble has formed in the real estate market. I'm hearing that houses bought now for N30m will be worth N50m by next year. These were the kind of stories we heard about some stocks during the boom period. This has left me a little confused because I'm about to buy a house (with another loan) but I don't want to be beaten twice. |
Good topic. I am interested in the result of the poll which so far is indicating that more people believe its real than otherwise. But it appears that people are contradicting themselves. The topic is specific on - wait for it - FALLING. So what's all this talk about it being real but you don't have to fall? As far as I'm concerned, if you say falling is not necessay, then you believe that when people fall, it's not real. Based on the above, those who believe it's not real are winning by far. This is the correct position. Most rational people know it can't be real but because God is mentioned, they let it pass. |
