Imagine the delight at unwrapping your Christmas present in 2043 and discovering you've been gifted a trip around the Moon. It may seem a little far-fetched right now but it could become a reality if space companies like Virgin Galactic realize their aspirations over the next 30 years or so. Richard Branson and his children are due to fly in his company's spaceship on its first commercial flight currently slated for 2014. But speaking to CNN outside a space conference in the UK last week, the company's CEO George Whitesides said their ambitions extended beyond sub-orbital flights for those first customers. "If we can make significant progress on the challenge of reusable space access then I think that opens up all kinds of opportunities in the future," he said. "One of the directions that might open up is high-speed point-to-point travel on Earth -- so that you could go from London to Singapore in an hour or go from London to Los Angeles in a couple of hours. Blue Origin, set up by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, says it is developing technologies to enable human access to space. And another private company, SpaceX, has already delivered payloads to the International Space Station. So with private companies launching services and national space agencies like India's ISRO joining the exploration of Mars and China setting off to land a probe on the Moon, is a fresh space race emerging? Whitesides suggests there is a new era dawning. "This is a great time," he told CNN. "There's a renaissance in space access -- between us and Blue and SpaceX and all these companies -- it's so exciting. "I think there's a very good chance that we're alive when we actually find another 'Earth' in another solar system -- how profound is that?" Scientists may get closer to that goal if proposed missions outlined at the UK conference get off the ground. Professor Giovanna Tinetti explained how one of the European Space Agency's candidate missions -- a space telescope called EChO -- would help analyze what exoplanet environments are like and whether they might be suitable for life. Delegates also heard about the plan to send a new probe to the Jovian system. The JUICE mission (JUpiter ICy moons Explorer) aims to explore not only the gas giant but also its three moons Ganymede, Callisto and Europa. Space physicist Professor Michele Dougherty said they were interested in finding out if water really is trapped between icy layers on Ganymede and its implications for "watery worlds" beyond Earth. The search for Earth-like planets is clearly something that fascinates Whitesides too. He believes we will soon be able to detect seasons on other worlds. And he's unlikely to have to wait until 2043 for his first taste of space adventure, having signed up for a seat in his company's spaceship. "I'm actually a customer as well," he said. "My wife and I bought two tickets in 2005. "I think it's important that I fly because just as Richard's flight is such an important signal to our customers that he believes in the system, similarly I need to do that as well."

To give someone a boost, ask them about a specific aspect of their life where they are doing well, and follow it up with a generic question about their overall happiness. It sounds simplistic, but it works wonders, according to Nobel laureate psychologist Daniel Kahneman.

In a study, Kahneman asked students two questions:

How many dates did you have last month?

How happy are you these days?

Those who were happy about their answer to the first question also reported a happy answer to the second, the study found. The first question needn't be that one specifically, of course. You can ask any question that you think the answer will be something that puts the person in a positive mood.

If the order of the questions is reversed, it doesn't work. Kahneman theorizes that this is because "happiness" is not an easy or quick assessment, and so the state of mind from the previous question is carried over into answering the second.

The emotion aroused by the dating question was still on everyone's mind when the query about general happiness came up… "Happiness these days" is not a natural or an easy assessment. A good answer requires a fair amount of thinking. However, the students who had just been asked about their dating did not need to think hard because they already had in their mind an answer to a related question: how happy they were with their love life.

The same pattern is found if a question about the students' relations with their parents or about their finances immediately precedes the question about general happiness. In both cases, satisfaction in the particular domain dominates happiness reports. Any emotionally significant question that alters a person's mood will have the same effect.

Eric Barker, who recounts this study, also notes in The Week that the two-question technique could be successfully employed to make people like you. If someone is feeling good about themselves because of what you asked them, they will transfer those feelings towards you.

CNN) -- A worker operating a machine in a family workshop in China accidentally cut off his hand -- which doctors were able to save by grafting it onto his lower calf. The worker, Xie Wei, said he was initially unsure if his right hand could be saved, but he thought it was worth a try. The hand went without a blood supply for many hours while Xie searched for a hospital that could perform such a surgery. Xie said that he went to local hospitals near the factory first, but he said they told him they "did not have the skills to help." Eventually he found a hospital about two hours away where doctors believed they could do it. Xie kept his hand in a plastic bag at first, then stored it in a cooler of ice. In total, it took about seven hours to get to a doctor who could help. The doctor, Dr. Tang Juyu, is a specialist in difficult tissue and wound repair cases. Before Xie went into the operation, Tang told him he was optimistic and predicted he would regain the use of his hand, according to Xie. Tang decided the best way to save the hand was to attach it to Xie's calf where there was a good blood supply. The hand would need to stay there until Xie's arm could fully heal. Tang believes there have been about 20 such cases in all of China and all of them have been successful. There is no data, as only case studies have been performed. Tang said in a similar operation in 2004, he grafted a hand onto a patient's belly. That operation was a success. When Xie woke up from the operation he said he was surprised to find his hand on his calf. He says his first reaction at the time was to think it was "unbelievable" and "weird." The hand itself felt warm, he said, but it was numb since no nerves were connected and only blood vessels were attached. His leg felt no different, he said, but was "heavier than usual." After about a month his arm was better healed, and he had another surgery where his hand was reattached. Tang says this second stage of the operation is actually more challenging, but everything went smoothly. Xie has recovered without complications and has been discharged. He is currently resting at home. He said he can twist his wrist to a certain degree, but doesn't have full movement with his fingers, at least not yet. Doctors told him a full recovery for the nerves in his hand should take about six months. Xie said he isn't sure what his future may bring. Today he is concentrating on recovering fully. The factory did pay for his operation, which cost about 300,000 Chinese yuan, or about $49,400. Most of all, Xie said, he is thankful to doctors for "living up to their promise" that they would be able to reattach his hand and make it functional again
