Fellows. My name is Yinka, a graduate from a uni here trying to make good with my life. Ive been to the american embassy 4 times already but refused. Im a mature student, looking to take a medical route in the U.S however I am aware that they do not grant visas to non-imigrants from Nigeria to study medicine since medical study there offers residency. I had to apply for undergrad admission with option to transfer credits attained here. The processing with schools went smoothly however the denials have been in the way of my progress.

The last interview I had lasted for a min or so:

VO: Why do you want to travel to the united states?
ME: To complete my undergrad degree in biology.

VO: You are 24!
ME: Yes sir

VO: what have you bn doing since completion high sch:
Me: Academics( told abt my remedials, diploman and undergrad)

VO: Tells me to hold on, then after a while he says why not apply for a Masters degree in Biological sciences?why do you want to go back to restudy bio? If u have graduated, pls reapply or if u havent complete ur education and reapply anytime.

Big Question is this.. DO I REAPPLY FOR A MASTERS? I HAVE ALL THAT IS NEEDED! AND HOW SOON
CAN I APPLY FOR SPRING or wait years for spacing? I just need candid advise ..[/qu

@ tena the vo has given u the answer just apply for masters and that same course he told you about and then u shud write test if needed like gre and toefl then u shud be fine...mehn 4 times is getting out of hand so act fast so u can pursue ur dreams mehn...best of luck!!!

imperiouxx: TO PHY,

Just got back now and got your time. Have we ever met before and why you always pick on me here? I owed you anything? Have I ever asked you anything or picked on you before on this thread? Why don't you have anything good to contribute but to come, say s h i t and leave? Let this be the last time you'll ever direct comment to me or you quote my statement. In fact, who the hell are you? If I'm tracked what's your f u c k ing headache about that. Are you the one paying my school fee or you brought me here? Are you ok at all? Respect yourself because I found it hard to believe you're a graduate student and never, ever again on this thread say imperiouxx, else you get it raw ooo. If I send the materials and you're pissed about it....go to hell or strike your head against wall and call your police or FBI to come for me. On this thread pleassssse don't cross to my line again ooo.
@imperiouxx aint got much to say bruh just chilax....you have always been a good example here by helping one way or the other...so just keep doing what u know how to do best...as for phy he was just trying to give u caution he meant no harm...you guys are mentors on this thread so keep the good work going guys.......and continue the way it was before......i'm out....................... grin grin grin grin grin

biofem2000: . My advise will be keep your money in your pocket. If the waiter needs that tip so bad, he might as well get a second job, You are a student. Let him yell all he wants. He does not own you. If you feel like a philantropist, give tips. If not, let him do his job. The next guy will tip him. I started giving tips to pizza delivery guys a few years ago for two reasons. First, I could easily part with $2 without thinking about how many pieces of diapers it will buy, second, I met a grad student who was a waiter and told me of how much the tips helped her pay through grad school ( not entirely of course). That being said, would you as a grad student contribute to your classmates tuition fund? Typically, you tip about 10-20 percent. So, for a $25 pizza, I am expected to part with $5. Forget it. Let the next guy tip. I"ll drop $5 in the good will offering at church. Been here 7 years, never tipped for a service and I care less about what the service provider thinks. I don't take tips either....or I don't get offered tips. One thing you will notice throughout your stay here is that you don't see money on the ground. The most you"ll see is a penny! We haven't even started talking about penny pinchers,...."....."......Oh well, I am also from Remo so that may explain my tipping philosophy.
it depends on ur pocket if u are bouyant enuf to give do that it all depends on you....but when u are in rome behave like the romans

grin Expecially when u just come u will mostly compare everything u want to buy in naira...and that will make u not buy most of the things you need grin grin grin grin

smiley make sure u make best use of ur time to study at the library and also make time for fun but not too much fun becos you will lose concentration on studies grin ;

@ made it to the top..goto the school website and check the financial aid section for international students and check for each of the school website u want to attend or likely to attend....or u can call the school international office to find out how u can get a scholarship thats very important becos even americans here struggle to get scholarship couple with financial aid to pay their tuition fees so as to make education affordable for themselves...so try and make ur research now when there is still time left.............

jimtosam: 7. Another thing I learnt about phone here. I was surprised they charge both ways..receiver and caller. So, if you can afford unlimited of T-mobile, boostmobile, etc. It will really pay compare to buying minutes. I think most of them are 50dollars/month (unlimited call, data, and SMS within USA). For International call, there are lots of services online. I use www.localphone.com. 5dollars will give you about 80mins to Nigeria line. Try to skype too.

8. Watch what you eat. America has the highest rate of cancer. All because of burger, 7-layer burrito, ice cream, and those junks. Don't try to feel among when you know some things can compromise your health. Coffee is not good cos of Caffeine. I will talk more about this later.

9. Don't downgrade your Country. If you can afford schooling in America, your father is rich too. Those white cant pay the fees you are paying. We had a discussion in our room about just concluded olympics. Even, the Americans there still believe we are very intelligent cos Naija guys dey collect awards here but the two Nigerians around me here downgraded my beloved country and I felt like punching them.
@jimtosan well good u are adjusting to chi-town...its a place to be expecially when u leave in downtown area but its very expensive...i stay in surburbs which i pay just $300 monthly plus utilities..and also i will advice u to switch to simple mobile network becos is $40 a month for unlimited call text in usa and international text is free plus also web service...so thats what i use for now...well u are just one week old you will discover so many things about usa and share more of experience to prospective students....wish u best of luck in ur studies ........welcome to chi-town grin

biofem2000: For those having problem with food in the US, this is my advise. If it doesn`t look farmiliar, do not eat it. If it does look farmiliar, be careful how much you eat. You will soon discover how unhealthy most fast food are and how negatively eating out can affect your health and your pocket. There are too many fat people here and its so easy to become fat here with all the junk and the rest of them.
Here`s a few tip:
In place of egusi, I use sun flower seed. I get that from whole food. You`ll never miss egusi again.
When you buy rice, go for long grain perboiled ( Ha ha ha, i learnt the heard way). If you know someone with Sams club membership, you can get a box of long grain perboiled rice. Otherwise, buy the cheap perboiled long grain rice from walmark.
For beans, not everything that looks like beans is really beans (learnt that too). Go for black eye beans in small sachets at walmart( its your regular white beans)
Look for people who buy in bulk that you can share with.

If you live in the MD area, I can be of help.

Good luck.
@biofem my belle don dey big ooo.....i am 3 months pregnant with pizza and junk food pls help i need aagunmu grin grin grin grin

Ollydon: it increased ur chances of securing the visa..i just wrote Sat too..got 1340....iono if dats gud enof tho
depending on the school 1340 is a good score...during my time i scored 1560 and got a whooping 70% scholarship and i stayed off campus plus i got a job immedeitely when i resumed school....so i just pay 4k per year now. but never the less just dey pray for the interview thats just the most important thing...

My Vicky: I have been a passive follower of this thread and I would like to appreciate all the nairalanders who have contributed meaningfully to this didactic thread. I had my interview at the US consulate general, on the 15th of August, 2012 and I would try to be brief about my interview experience. I earnestly pray that for those who have interviews afterwards, you will have success story to share. First, permit me say that just as many guys have said, the God factor can not be over-emphasized, you need the mercy and favor of God and I pray you have it in abundance on that day. Also, for first timers like myself, please ensure you have your photographs ready before your interview date cos those photographers near the embassy are out to drain you! Don't listen to anyone who offers to staple your documents for you, they will dupe you-the stapling will be done when you go in. I wouldn't advise you to arrive earlier than 1 hour before your appointment time else your precious time will be 'squandered'. Meanwhile, no two interview experiences are the same, i had to read Isaiah 50: 4-10 and it could be of help to someone. Now to my paraphrased interview proper: immediately my ticket no was displayed @ counter 1, I quickly walked up to the white guy there and....

Me: good afternoon sir ( I even forgot to smile)
Vo: afternoon, pass me your docs
Me: passed the docs (feverishly waiting for the next bombshell )
Vo: Which school are you going?
Me: abc university
Vo: is that the only school you applied to?
Me: I applied to six schools in the US, 4 admits.....
Vo: name them
Me: when I started....the Vo interrupts...
Vo: did you take the GRE?
Me: yes
Vo: show me the result and continue (guess he wanted to cross check the schools on the result )
Me: continued ( thank God my confidence level has increased here )
Vo: why abc university?
Me: good research facilities, good ranking, good student-faculty ratio and affordability (cos I already have two other better ranked schools on the result but more expensive than abc )
Vo: oh, you are offered a scholarship @ abc university?
Me: yes ( the very reason I chose abc over the other two! But dem no born me well make I tell the Vo oooooo )
At this point he was a little bit silent and then I understood the saying that silence is deafening than noise at times.....suddenly!!!
Vo: which school did you finish from?
Me: I graduated from the prestigious OAU!
Vo: why OAU?
Me: academic excellence, structural masterpiece, comprehensive reading, learning, culture and social uniqueness
Vo: (with a skeptical eye?) how do you compare Ife with the university of Lagos? ( in a matter of nanosecond, I thought 'how did this white guy know about Ife and Unilag? Then I revived.....)
Me: I just re-arranged my answer above and told him that, for those reasons, I will choose OAU anyday, anytime!!!
Vo: which course?
Me: told him
Vo: what will you do after your studies?
Me : (permit me to say that I borrowed a line from someone on this thread, I'm sorry I couldnt recollect the person's ID, please, pardon me for virtual, Internet plagiarism!).....I just opened my mouth and said....,
My current job requires expertise in this field of study, meaning that I would be able to immediately return back to Nigeria and apply those acquired skills towards the development of Nigeria......
Vo: tore the green ticket and told me to go pick my visa........
Me: thank you sir and good bye.

God did it and I am very grateful to the Lord. Yours will not be impossible!
Congrats
See, I'm not from rich home but we can afford to pay $2000 as school fee per semester. I got graduate assitantship that paid 92% of my school fee, all that remain is the little fraction and living expenses which any VO can't doubt I can afford. My only advice for you is to get schools in inexpensive states and grant of any kind, then the little your parent can afford won't be problem after the VO sees the lion share of the fee is covered by the school. This also shows that you are heading straight to the school. As for undergraduate, scholarship might be hard to get but waiting till one can come for a master's degree + GA would be the best in ones life.

@imperiouxx....pls can you give me a comprehensive guide on how to apply for graduate assistanship? i would really appreciate that.. and also pls send me gre materials to akcandoit@yahoo.com

thanks

ik.swiss:
please can someone who is in usa with a visiting visa apply for school in states and change his status from visiting visa to student visa without coming back to nigeria..please help needed here abegoooo
Its possible depending on how long it takes the uscis to approve ur application but at the same time itts all depends on the time left for ur visa to expire. But for me its best to go back home and apply like next spring and am so sure of 90 Percent sure u will be granted a visa a student visa with travelling experience advantage but hope u have not overstayed?

elektra: Hello house! My visa was granted yesterday at Lagos by VO 2. My interview was short and none of my documents were reviewed.

VO: Good morning can i have you documents?
Me: I handed them over to him
VO: Why are you going to the US?
Me: For undergraduate studies
VO: Undergraduate studies huh
Me: Yes
VO: What school did you apply to?
ME: XYZ UNIVERSITY
VO: You say you are going for Undergraduate studies?
Me: Yes. I have a three year degree from xyz university, i had applied for postgraduate studies but I was advised by the school to transfer my credit to undergraduate and top up to a four year degree before moving on to masters studies.
VO: What course are you going for?
Me: Biomedical science
VO: Tell me about it
Me: The course is designed to give the student a very good foundation in the biology of the body amongst other things, it also has and undergraduate research program that allows me to participate in a research lab of my choice
Vo: Typing quickly
Me: Praying inwardly
Vo: Tore the green ticket, held it and asked "Tell me about you three year program"
Me: I studied biotechnology, it gave me a very good understanding of the application of living things to ethical and social purposes. and so on
Vo: OK, we are going to issue. Pick up you visa on Thursday.

Let me just point out that even if you are on the older side you can go for undergrad studies if you can explain what you have been doing. Also, you do not have to wait for the VO to ask you some specific questions in order to answer, If you feel the need to thoroughly explain please do so. Another important thing, just spake clean and correct English in you usual accent no need to start forming accent for the white VOs they live in Nigeria, they know how Nigerians talk. And most importantly, PRAY! and have FAITH! I was scared cos my i 20 had said my course duration was 4 years but i knew my course duration was much lass since i was only going upgrade my undergrad and move to Masters so i wrote the correct length of studies in my ds 160 form. I prayed to God that the VO would be blind to this irregularity and God answered. Thank you to everyone that has contributed to this thread. Best of luck to everyone that is yet to go for the interview
Congrats.....
