Fellows. My name is Yinka, a graduate from a uni here trying to make good with my life. Ive been to the american embassy 4 times already but refused. Im a mature student, looking to take a medical route in the U.S however I am aware that they do not grant visas to non-imigrants from Nigeria to study medicine since medical study there offers residency. I had to apply for undergrad admission with option to transfer credits attained here. The processing with schools went smoothly however the denials have been in the way of my progress. The last interview I had lasted for a min or so: VO: Why do you want to travel to the united states? ME: To complete my undergrad degree in biology. VO: You are 24! ME: Yes sir VO: what have you bn doing since completion high sch: Me: Academics( told abt my remedials, diploman and undergrad) VO: Tells me to hold on, then after a while he says why not apply for a Masters degree in Biological sciences?why do you want to go back to restudy bio? If u have graduated, pls reapply or if u havent complete ur education and reapply anytime. Big Question is this.. DO I REAPPLY FOR A MASTERS? I HAVE ALL THAT IS NEEDED! AND HOW SOON CAN I APPLY FOR SPRING or wait years for spacing? I just need candid advise ..[/qu @ tena the vo has given u the answer just apply for masters and that same course he told you about and then u shud write test if needed like gre and toefl then u shud be fine...mehn 4 times is getting out of hand so act fast so u can pursue ur dreams mehn...best of luck!!! |

biofem2000: . My advise will be keep your money in your pocket. If the waiter needs that tip so bad, he might as well get a second job, You are a student. Let him yell all he wants. He does not own you. If you feel like a philantropist, give tips. If not, let him do his job. The next guy will tip him. I started giving tips to pizza delivery guys a few years ago for two reasons. First, I could easily part with $2 without thinking about how many pieces of diapers it will buy, second, I met a grad student who was a waiter and told me of how much the tips helped her pay through grad school ( not entirely of course). That being said, would you as a grad student contribute to your classmates tuition fund? Typically, you tip about 10-20 percent. So, for a $25 pizza, I am expected to part with $5. Forget it. Let the next guy tip. I"ll drop $5 in the good will offering at church. Been here 7 years, never tipped for a service and I care less about what the service provider thinks. I don't take tips either....or I don't get offered tips. One thing you will notice throughout your stay here is that you don't see money on the ground. The most you"ll see is a penny! We haven't even started talking about penny pinchers,...."....."......Oh well, I am also from Remo so that may explain my tipping philosophy.it depends on ur pocket if u are bouyant enuf to give do that it all depends on you....but when u are in rome behave like the romans |
New comers how yankee dey treat una.....you guys shudlet us kno so we can alsways let u kno wat to expect like first you class mates will laff at ur accent mostly black student dey will almost make u look like a comedian becos of the way u talk ![]() dey will laff at ur dressing style mostly black students ![]() when dey realize u are from africa the will start asking you silly questions like.....do u live in the jungle or have u seen a lion ![]() if you see mostly 9ja poeple that have been there for a while dey will start forming accent for you and treat u like dem no send you..that means O.Y.O ; Expecially when u just come u will mostly compare everything u want to buy in naira...and that will make u not buy most of the things you need ![]() make sure u make best use of ur time to study at the library and also make time for fun but not too much fun becos you will lose concentration on studies ;; when u want to get a room mate try looking for an african like u that just came together or a nice fellow african that is willing to help in area of advice also kno the way you spend ur money mostly walmart, try and get used to american food becos dey are cheaper than african foods but kno let ur belle big like 3 months pregnant ooo ![]() try and also find out from ur class mates where dey cut their hair....my friends here akata use to cut me for like $5, but outside is $20...so try and find out basic things most especially. when u want to look for job try and check mostly dinning and housing halls becos is first come first serve, house add to that |
walex57:lolz.... ![]() |
madeit2thetop: pls how will I know maybe a school is giving scholarship or not@ made it to the top..goto the school website and check the financial aid section for international students and check for each of the school website u want to attend or likely to attend....or u can call the school international office to find out how u can get a scholarship thats very important becos even americans here struggle to get scholarship couple with financial aid to pay their tuition fees so as to make education affordable for themselves...so try and make ur research now when there is still time left............. |
jimtosam: 7. Another thing I learnt about phone here. I was surprised they charge both ways..receiver and caller. So, if you can afford unlimited of T-mobile, boostmobile, etc. It will really pay compare to buying minutes. I think most of them are 50dollars/month (unlimited call, data, and SMS within USA). For International call, there are lots of services online. I use www.localphone.com. 5dollars will give you about 80mins to Nigeria line. Try to skype too.@jimtosan well good u are adjusting to chi-town...its a place to be expecially when u leave in downtown area but its very expensive...i stay in surburbs which i pay just $300 monthly plus utilities..and also i will advice u to switch to simple mobile network becos is $40 a month for unlimited call text in usa and international text is free plus also web service...so thats what i use for now...well u are just one week old you will discover so many things about usa and share more of experience to prospective students....wish u best of luck in ur studies ........welcome to chi-town ![]() |
GboyegaD: Chi town, is it in the era of 1600 or 2400? Kindly clarify oooo.was the time of 2400...didnt get the best score but it was enuf to earn me 70percent scholarship..... ![]() |
Ollydon: thanks bro....u just made my day..atleast i shoukd get 50 per scholarship now? Or waddu u fink? I even read for one day...i was busy at my university ereyou welcome....but like i said it all depends on the school if u meet their scholarship requirement...but hope for the best bruh. |
biofem2000: For those having problem with food in the US, this is my advise. If it doesn`t look farmiliar, do not eat it. If it does look farmiliar, be careful how much you eat. You will soon discover how unhealthy most fast food are and how negatively eating out can affect your health and your pocket. There are too many fat people here and its so easy to become fat here with all the junk and the rest of them.@biofem my belle don dey big ooo.....i am 3 months pregnant with pizza and junk food pls help i need aagunmu ![]() |
Ollydon: it increased ur chances of securing the visa..i just wrote Sat too..got 1340....iono if dats gud enof thodepending on the school 1340 is a good score...during my time i scored 1560 and got a whooping 70% scholarship and i stayed off campus plus i got a job immedeitely when i resumed school....so i just pay 4k per year now. but never the less just dey pray for the interview thats just the most important thing... |
Anthonymighty: Another thing. If they'll ask for it. Can I get a waiver from my school? If yes can someone tell me how? Because I donot know what to write.well i have not heard of anyone getting visa without TOeFL OR SAT but you can still try as much as u can to get a waiver from ur school and pray for GOD'S FAVOR. |
My Vicky: I have been a passive follower of this thread and I would like to appreciate all the nairalanders who have contributed meaningfully to this didactic thread. I had my interview at the US consulate general, on the 15th of August, 2012 and I would try to be brief about my interview experience. I earnestly pray that for those who have interviews afterwards, you will have success story to share. First, permit me say that just as many guys have said, the God factor can not be over-emphasized, you need the mercy and favor of God and I pray you have it in abundance on that day. Also, for first timers like myself, please ensure you have your photographs ready before your interview date cos those photographers near the embassy are out to drain you! Don't listen to anyone who offers to staple your documents for you, they will dupe you-the stapling will be done when you go in. I wouldn't advise you to arrive earlier than 1 hour before your appointment time else your precious time will be 'squandered'. Meanwhile, no two interview experiences are the same, i had to read Isaiah 50: 4-10 and it could be of help to someone. Now to my paraphrased interview proper: immediately my ticket no was displayed @ counter 1, I quickly walked up to the white guy there and....Congrats |
WORDS CANT DESCRIBE |

nifty: hi guys am trying to ask for advice on here,i am a 300l computer science student of a university here in nigeria which means i have 1 more year to have my bachelors but i won the american visa lottery and presently in the us,my plans where to go get my green card then come back to naija to complete my bachelors and then go back to american to compliment it with a masters degree in america nd wld probably be able to get a job here in america, but peeps and student i met here said my naija degree is useless even if i have a masters wiv it that i shld just take a transfer to a university here then continue from there.........and wld have 2 more years to be thru instead of one if i return to naija...............i need some advice@ niffy dont risk losing ur green card becos u want to come and finish ur degree back in 9ja....just transfer the credits and continue here in usa...that shud be a wise choice....i have a friend that did the same thing here, so u shud be fine. |

@ house pls i need Gre and toefl materials....to (akcandoit@yahoo.com) |
imperoiox pls send me gre and toefl material to this email akcandoit@yahoo.com...thanks |
See, I'm not from rich home but we can afford to pay $2000 as school fee per semester. I got graduate assitantship that paid 92% of my school fee, all that remain is the little fraction and living expenses which any VO can't doubt I can afford. My only advice for you is to get schools in inexpensive states and grant of any kind, then the little your parent can afford won't be problem after the VO sees the lion share of the fee is covered by the school. This also shows that you are heading straight to the school. As for undergraduate, scholarship might be hard to get but waiting till one can come for a master's degree + GA would be the best in ones life. @imperiouxx....pls can you give me a comprehensive guide on how to apply for graduate assistanship? i would really appreciate that.. and also pls send me gre materials to akcandoit@yahoo.com thanks |
ik.swiss:Its possible depending on how long it takes the uscis to approve ur application but at the same time itts all depends on the time left for ur visa to expire. But for me its best to go back home and apply like next spring and am so sure of 90 Percent sure u will be granted a visa a student visa with travelling experience advantage but hope u have not overstayed? |
elektra: Hello house! My visa was granted yesterday at Lagos by VO 2. My interview was short and none of my documents were reviewed.Congrats..... |

dey will laff at ur dressing style mostly black students
when dey realize u are from africa the will start asking you silly questions like.....do u live in the jungle or have u seen a lion
try and also find out from ur class mates where dey cut their hair....my friends here akata use to cut me for like $5, but outside is $20...so try and find out basic things most especially.
