On daily basis, we here or receive complaints of accounts being hacked, information being stolen, privacy intrusions and many more which shows that there are several methods used by hackers in hacking your account and also getting your personal information.

We have researched the most popular methods used by every hackers in getting your password and we are providing some countermeasures to those methods in this post.

NB: This post is not to teach you how to hack, but will provide a more secured suggestion on how prevent your password being hacked.

1. Phishing
Phishing is the most easiest and popular hacking method used by hackers to get someone account details. In Phishing attack, hacker will send fake page of real website like Accessbank, facebook to victim. When someone login through that fake page his details is automatically sent to the hacker. This fake pages can be easily created and hosted on free web-hosting sites.

Countermeasure: Phishing attacks are very easy to avoid. The url of this phishing pages are different from the real one. For example URL of phishing page of Accessbank might look likeAccesbank.com (As you can see There is only one "s". Always make sure that websites url is correct, and never follow an email link to login account details (Especially Bank Accounts).


2. BruteForce Attack
Any password can be cracked using Brute-force attack. Brute-force attacks try every possible combinations of numbers, letters and special characters until it matches the correct password. Brute-force attacks can take a very long time depending upon the complexity of the password. And the cracking time is determined by the speed of computer and complexity of the password.

Countermeasure: Use long and complex passwords. Try to use combination of upper and lowercase letters along with numbers and possibly characters. Brute-force attack will take hundreds or even thousands of years to crack such complex and long passwords.

Example: Passwords like "myrealname" or "mypassword" can be cracked easily whereas computer will take thousand of days to crack passwords like "Ya34lL!"


3. Rats and Keylogger
In keylogging or RATing the hacker sends keylogger or rat to the victim. This allows hacker to monitor every thing victim do on his/her computer. Every keystroke is logged which includes passwords and usernames. Moreover hackers can even control the victims computer to perform some remote functions.

Countermeasure: Never login to your bank account from cyber cafe or someone else computer. If its important use on-screen or virtual keyboard while tying the login. Use latest anti-virus software and keep them updated. And never install any file from the internet without proper scanning and verifying the source.


4. Rainbow Table
A Rainbow table is a huge pre-computed list of hashes for every possible combination of characters. A password hash is a password that has gone through a mathematical algorithm such as md5 or CHA5 and is transformed into something which is not recognizable. A hash is a one way encryption so once a password is hashed there is no way to get the original string from the hashed string. A very commonly used hashing algorithm to store passwords in website databases is MD5. It is almost similar to dictionary attack, the only difference is, in rainbow tables attack hashed characters are used as passwords whereas in dictionary attack normal characters are used as passwords.

Example: ("hello" in md5 is 5d41402abc4b2a76b9719d911017c592 and empty string ("" is d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427e

Countermeasure: Make sure you choose password that is long and complex. Creating tables for long and complex password takes a very long time and a lot of resources.

5. Guessing
This looks silly but this can easily help hackers to get ones password within seconds. If the hacker knows you, he can use information he knows about you to guess your password. Hacker can also use combination of Social Engineering and Guessing to acquire your password.

Countermeasure: Don't use your name, surname, phone number or date of birth as your password. Try to avoid creating password that relates to you. Create complex and long password with combination of letters and numbers which has nothing really about your personal information.


6. Social Engineering
Social engineering is process of manipulating someone to trust you and get information from them. For example, if the hacker was trying to get the password of a co-workers or friends computer, he could call him pretending to be from the IT department and simply ask for his login details. Sometimes, hackers call the victim pretending to be from bank and ask for their credit cards details. Social Engineering can be used to get someone password, to get bank credentials or any personal information.

Countermeasure: If someone tries to get your personal or bank details, refer them to check their database. If they are legit, they should have every details they need without having to call you.
Never ever give your password and credit card details for any reason.

its Thursday and I thought of doing some little throw back at some funny things I did while growing up and am sure am not probably alone, some of us will be guilty of some of the act if not all...I will share just 10 cos it seems the number and Nairaland has something in common called FP.

1. competitive water fetching : I can easily play this moment without blinking, I remember going to fetch water with some of our age group then from the tap. and the next thing we start doing first to reach house, then the hustling starts , we fetch, place on our head and the running start and most of the time we end up losing 70% of the water while running with our cloth soaked like say na inside swimming pool person go fetch the water.

2. mum and dad : chai chai...mehn ..seeing some of the kids that played mummy then now and I will be like " Omo mehn so Na dis chick I marry then " I don't miss this play for anytin..that's the only time in ones life when you can deep your hand in an empty pocket and give your wife an imaginary money and she will gladly accept and still promise to cook something.

3. fantasizing: I remember those days in school , especially in senior class when we just tell our friends that , guy after secondary school, university straight and I start working and get a car and your friend will reply with his own similar version, meanwhile mr JAMB and mr Post-ume they laugh us saying "make una no worry I go happen to una soon' after secondary school life happens.

4. spirit for hair: so guilty of this one, I remember one of my friend in primary 6 then with some little teddy and we all they trip for the teddy and he told us its spirit that he do apply to get the hair, chai next thing most of us guys go buy spirit they apply, after like months nothing come out , intact Na small e remain some of us nearly drink the spirit maybe the hair go come out.

5. meat Sega: growing up in a humble home is very interesting especially when you have a younger brother ..then both of us eat together with one meat to share as the elder brother I have the privilege of sharing and most times I share my own part in my mouth and drop the other part for young bro Wey go use bad eye look me..latter we agree say make we dey do I eat the whole meat today u eat yours next day..the tin dey go smooth until one day Wey b my turn to eat the whole meat Na hin they serve our food separately, Na hin I raid the both meat for myself to the discomfort of young bro, the cry wey follow no b small and d beating Wey I chop no b here.

6. make I cut: back then in secondary school that style was the order of the day. u buy something and your niggas will appear from God knows where and you hear guy make I cut , sometimes if u form good boy you will end up eating nothing. these styles trend to the level Wey to buy something during break no go sweet u, I buy anything I want on my way home.

7. usain bolt errand: My God remembering this always elicit this laughter. I remember mumcy sending me on errand while watching an interesting programme or match the likes of super story (toyintomato) Abi super eagles and I will run to and fro and mumcy will be like you sure say you reach the place .

8. Blue female teacher : hmmm. we get this female teacher then that like wearing skimpy dress and each time we are about taking her subject you see guys hustling for front seat especially the rear side because she likes sitting on the desk, chai we dey see things and one day she asked why most guys sit at the front and girls at the back. who them born well to give the reason Na so we dey look her like zombie, Abi lalasti.clala if Na u Shey u go talk .

9. sandal lifting: those days in secondary school while playing ball just to finish playing and you realise your sandal is gone and you are left with leggedisbenze..some of the victims then asap will find solution by looking for another place inthe school compound where dem dey play and replace make he no carry empty leg go house


10. senior terror; as juniors then we suffer for senior hand,you will hear come take 20 naira buy meat pie and drink and bring 10naira change and in your head you will be like "dis senior no sabi math ni Abi Na me born you" if you stand dere without any movement next thing the senior go begin shout ask u to follow him and next he draw one useless thing for board telling you this Na fuel station and dis Na car oya push the car to the fuel station and I go b like how Nah I resemble magic mike ni or merlin , one day I form wizkid I clean d car tell the senior say the car Don buy fuel go sir . the punishment Wey follow ni b here.

The mentality of naija girls now is that a guy must become their meal ticket. Once they finally say yes to his toastings, they start dumping responsibilities in tune of huge amounts on the guy's head even when they know he's not capable of sorting such.

When you find yourself in that kind of situation, put her through this test:

Let's say she wants you to buy a Samsung phone worth 50k for her. When she comes to your place uttering such demand, tell her you will give her the money right away but on one condition- she has to call her father on phone and place it on loud speaker in your presence.

Tell her to tell her father that she wants him to buy her a phone. Listen to the man's reaction. If the old man is not in tune with the latest gadgets going on in today's world, he might agree to get her one.

If the man agrees to buy her a phone thinking it's a Nokia 3310 she wants, tell her to tell him the price which is 50k. The man's reaction will most definitely startle you to laughter . He will definitely get angry at such demand and make his point clear that he can't afford to spend on such frivolity except he's dangote. He might even tell her to remember the humble background she's from.


What's the point of the test?

Why should she dump that kind of responsibility on a struggling guy like you, a responsibility that a mature and salary earner his afraid of bagging?

You will be stupid to foot such bill if you do not have huge savings in an account. Don't you even have a mother, a sister or a relative to lavish on? These are the people who will always remember you for such gesture, not some silly girl who thinks 50k grows on trees. That 50k might be bigger than the amount her father collects as pension from the government. Yet, she wants you to spend it on a phone that will run out of trend when the new model drops. With the rate of unemployment in the country, graduates are willing to kill to get a job that pays 30k. Yet, some undergraduate is spending way more than that just to impress a girl who is probably already eyeing another guy.

Try to apply wisdom in ever thing you do. Stop accepting responsibilities their fathers can't shoulder. The worst is that their demands are silly material things of no real value. Accepting such stupidity is one of the reasons why some guys never make it in life.


I know some female readers on this thread might be like... "lamentations of a broke dude".

Guess what? Your father is also a broke dude if you can't call him on phone to tell him to buy you a phone worth 50k.

I am feeling more like a devil right now,

I have a friend who owns a Business Hub where Technology startups are enhanced and built in the southern state.

Occasionally, he partners with Google to organized tech and entrepreneurial events and i am always one of the resource person, we are good friends and we share alot.

When i traveled down for one of the training, he showed me his girl, whom he also call his fiance.

One day he called me to say one of the mentee in the hub was going to represent him in an event in Lagos and that he would like her to stay in my place, and i gladly accepted.

The lady came and she was completely amazing, i took her shopping and we had massive fun, i liked her already and she stayed a little longer after the program before she left.

She became my friend and sees me too as a mentor, i advised her in areas of my specialties and helped her market her startup, she started visiting Lagos randomly because she now had me, so one day when she visited, she told me she is really in love with her mentor in the Hub, who is also the man that introduced her to me, i told her the mentor already have a fiance and she confirmed that she knows but just in love with him, we talked over it and we had a good laugh.

So last year when i went for the training, i did not see the Hub manager fiance, i asked him and he told me she is fine, i said are you sure because she is always here in your programs, what happened, the guy laughed and went away.

When he left, this lady who usually visits me in Lagos then told me, that they have broken up, that the lady was not good for her because she knows nothing about his business, the hub or help in anyway and so he had to let her go. we talked over it and i said shebi you are in love with him, isn't this the best time for you to go in lol. initially i took this as a play but when i returned from the training early this year, the lady called me and said she knows i can influence him to fall in love with her, i told her since he is single that i will see if my pranks can work.

I started talking to the guy about one of his mentee, how i like her and how good she is, he also confirmed she was good bla bla bla bla, i started talking to him about dating the girl, used different tricks, initially the guy was neutral and did not want to have anything to do with someone in his hub, to avoid disrespect et all, but i told him the girl is more matured than that etc. and ofcourse i asked the girl to shower him with respect, work smart, well and make him see reasons to fall in love.

Few weeks after we put all of these together, he asked her out and they started dating, I was so happy for them.

But trouble started when the old fiance of the guy came to me on facebook to chat, reporting the guy to me, that she knows he respects me alot and so she wants me to talk to him, and i asked what is the issue, she told me she has a child for him, a child they are bringing up together and that the child is less than 6 months old, that he was a good father until recently (the exact time he started dating this girl in the office) he has changed, and that he is now dating a girl in his office and that the girl has been robing it on her face, that the girl had the mind to come to their child dedication and flaunt her relationship with her fiance even though she still wears his ring and he still insist there is nothing to worry about.

I asked her, did you guys ever broke up and she said never, infact it was his idea to keep the child, they never had any issue in the relationship, and the reason she never showed up for the program last year was because her baby was so little she couldnt leave her alone in the house, i think the baby was a month old then.

At that point my head bursted, how could i be a party to those who will inflict pains and agony on another woman.

I never knew she had a girl for him or that they are still dating, this lady used my head and made me confused an innocent man, even though i do not understand why the guy never told me he now has a child.

I asked this other lady if she knew the fiance had a child and she said yes, that she did not want to tell me and that she doesn't care if she has a child or not, that the fiance did it out of wickedness to have a child for him so to block others from competing with her, i almost went mad at hearing her talk that way, i asked her to leave the couple alone to bring up their child that i will never be part of it but she said she cannot.

What do you think i can do to correct this mess i have created.

truth be told,come clean to all of them let them know why you did what you did and let them decide. Truth is also deadly as its bitter but is better to come clean than let your conscience torment you. Please next time if anyone tries to talk to you about relationship,just tell the person to do the right thing.
