Culture / 21 New Ibadan Kings Threaten To Dethrone Olubadan by CHOPUP411(m): 7:35am On Dec 12, 2017
21 new Ibadan kings threaten to recommend Olubadan’s removal

The 21 Ibadan kings, installed by the Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, on August 27, 2017, have issued a dethronement notice to the Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Saliu Adetunji.

The Olubadan and the Olubadan-in-Council fell out after the governor crowned them and some Baales in accordance with the report of the Justice Boade panel set up by Ajimobi to review the Olubadan Chieftaincy Declaration.

Olubadan’s Director, Media and Public Affairs, Adeola Oloko, told our correspondent that the palace had yet to receive any notice and that a response from the king would be communicated to the public at the appropriate time.

At a press conference addressed by the 21 kings at the Mapo Hall, Ibadan on Monday, the leader of the group, Oba Lekan Balogun, who is also the Otun Olubadan of Ibadan land, accused the Olubadan of taking unilateral decision on behalf of the ‘Olubadan-Kings-in-Council’ and inciting the people against the state government.

Among those who attended the conference were Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, Oba Abimbola Ajibola, Oba Eddy Oyewole, Oba Lateef Adebimpe, Oba Amidu Ajibade and Oba Kola Adegbola.

They said Olubadan’s action did not portray the true position of the relationship that existed between the council and the state government.

They also made reference to issues that led to a disagreement between the Olubadan-in-Council and the monarch.

Balogun said, “Olubadan-in-Council’s meetings are not conducted the way they are supposed to be. Oloris (Olubadan wives) were attending meetings with us and contributing, dictating, and attacking us. They (oloris) resorted to (raining) abuses and curses on the High Chiefs.

“The appointment of Baales and Mogajis is not in compliance with the proper rules and standards. Apart from these, a new Olubadan-in-Council is inside Popoyemoja palace consisting of Olubadan, the Oloris and the personal assistant to the Olubadan, who decide, from time to time who is to be Baale or Mogaji and will only send hearing notice of meeting and agenda to the real members of the Olubadan-in-Council on Saturday preceding the installation date on Monday.”

The group said their main objective was not to depose the Olubadan, but added that if the monarch failed to change his ways within 21 days, they would recommend his removal.

“The Olubadan has since after the inauguration of the beaded crown Obas in Ibadan cultivated himself to misbehave by engaging in acts to cause civil disorder by parading himself about with some unscrupulous Mogajis in Ibadan land, inciting people to rise up against the legitimate government of our amiable Governor of Oyo State, Abiola Ajimobi.

“This is a serious offence which can make us pass a vote of no confidence in him, after which we, as kingmakers that nominated and appointed him for confirmation and approval by the Executive Governor, will also call for his removal.

“We are by this conference, giving the king 21 days ultimatum to change his stand now and work for the improvement of Ibadan rather than disorderliness,” said the kings’ representative.

Crime / Herdsmen Attack Families In Cross River State by CHOPUP411(m): 6:50pm On Dec 07, 2017
NO fewer than 200 families have fled their homes at Mbiabong Ito community, in Ito South clan, Odukpani Local Government Area, Cross River State, following the invasion of the community by herdsmen. Vanguard learned that the herdsmen, who drove a large herd of cows into the community’s farmlands, were believed to have forcefully resisted attempts by the villagers to deny them access to land for grazing. An indigene, Effiong Asuquo, told Vanguard that as gunshots rent the air, late Tuesday evening, the villagers had to run into the bush when it became apparent that the herdsmen had more sophisticated weapons. “We had to hide inside the bush because the kind of guns the herdsmen were carrying were too sophisticated. To stay alive we had to scamper for safety and the best place was the bush,” he said. A police source, who confirmed the incident, said it was quite unfortunate because a lot of people were injured in the process of running to safety. His words: You have to understand that it will take a while before I can authoritatively give you accurate information on the number of casualties and current situation in the area. Getting to the area is a challenge as you will have to either travel to Akwa Ibom first before linking up the place through the river in Itu.” When contacted, police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Irene Ugbo confirmed the incident and said they were on top of the situation. “ We are aware of the matter and we are on top of the situation because there is no cause for alarm. No casualties have been recorded to the best of my knowledge and our men are already on ground as we speak,” she said.

Religion / Pope Seek Slight Change To The Lord’s Prayer by CHOPUP411(m): 4:05pm On Dec 07, 2017
Pope Francis has said the Roman Catholic Church should adopt a better translation of the phrase “Lead us not into temptation” in the “Our Father,” the best known prayer in Christianity.

“That is not a good translation,” the Pope said in a television interview on Wednesday night.

Francis said the Catholic Church in France had decided to use the phrase “Do not let us fall into temptation” as an alternative and indicated that it or something similar should be applied worldwide.

The prayer, also called “The Lord’s Prayer,” is part of Christian liturgical culture and memorised from childhood by hundreds of millions of Catholics.

It is a translation from the Latin vulgate, which was translated from ancient Greek, which was in turn translated from Aramaic, the language spoken by Jesus Christ.

HIT: BMW Z8 – The World Is Not Enough
One of those moments where you wince slightly at the galumphing product placement, but when the Z8 appeared in 1999’s The World Is Not Enough, at least the car was fit for Bond. In case you’ve forgotten, the Z8 was a svelte two-seat RWD roadster that BMW produced in the late Nineties until 2003 by a team led by Chris Bangle, with the exterior design by a certain Henrik Fisker (he of the Karma, DB9 and V8 Vantage).

It was a gorgeous retro-styled thing, and certainly had the go to match the show, powered as it was by the E39 M5’s V8 and good for 400bhp, 370lb ft of torque and a sprint time to 62mph of well under five seconds – enough to out-drag baddie Renard’s henchpersons.

In Secret Service Q spec, it apparently had titanium armour, a head-up display and “six beverage holders”, though Q’s assistant – played in this case by John Cleese – didn’t mention much else. He certainly seemed to forget the surface-to-air missile that Bond later uses to take down a helicopter, though the titanium armour didn’t do much to stop a second chopper using a dangly rotary chainsaw to cut the Z8 in half. Of all the cars that had to die, it had to be, well, not actually a Z8, but a replica Cobra clad with Z8 panels.

HIT: Aston Martin DB5 – Goldfinger
Probably the most famous Bond car of all, the DB5 first made a film appearance with Sean Connery in 1964’s Goldfinger – a grand mix of gentlemanly flash that suited the British Secret Service to a tee. Anyone who had the Corgi toy will remember the gadgets, too: machine guns behind the front indicators, three-way revolving numberplates, a bulletproof shield at the back (suspiciously like a big lump of lead) smokescreen maker, tyre-slashing spikes and ejector seat. Proper stuff.

It’s also apparently the fastest DB5 in existence, because when Pierce Brosnan’s Bond drives it in 1995’s GoldenEye, it manages to match a contemporary Ferrari F355 Spider on a twisty mountain road driven by the ever-amusingly named Xenia Onatopp. The DB5 was only launched three months prior to filming Goldfinger, but was rushed into service to replace the DB MkIII that Bond drove in the books – who knew it would become one of the most iconic vehicles in movie history?

HIT: Tuk-Tuk – Octopussy
Technically a Bajaj RE, but more commonly known as a tuktuk or auto rickshaw, the three-wheeled taxi commandeered by an eyebrow-morphing Roger Moore in Bond’s 13th film outing, Octopussy (1983), turned out to be a bit more than it seemed. The scene encompassed Bond winning a high-stakes backgammon game against an Afghan prince and then hooking up with local MI6 agent Vijay for a sharp exit. Our heroic duo are then pursued by said baddie Kamal Khan’s shotgun-wielding henchgoon Gobinda through a busy market in a similar-looking vehicle, inevitably leading to some classic Bondesque call-and-reply lines: Bond: “We’ve got company.” Vijay: “Don’t worry – this is a company car…” Vijay then hits the gas and manages a quite spectacular wheelie from a vehicle that should be putting out in the region of half a brake horsepower.

Seems like the Brits aren’t the only ones with a Q Branch, or access to sports bike engines. The resulting chase sequence through the streets of Udaipur in India is one of the those early Eighties tongue-in-cheek sequences that still manages to be both exciting and funny – though it doesn’t half feel dated now. Interestingly, Bajaj still makes the RE range, although the modern versions now include a 145cc two-stroke motor putting out a whopping 8.8bhp and featuring such luxuries as flush-fitting indicators that apparently “prevent water from seeping in”. They still look pretty much the same, though, so if you want to re-enact your Octopussy fantasies, you still can…

HIT: Honda ATC 90 – Diamonds Are Forever
It’s 1971 and Sean Connery’s sixth and final outing as the legendary spy, doing something that involved diamond smuggling, giant lasers and, of course, Ernst Stavro Blofeld and his penchant for fluffy lap cats. But the fact that Blofeld was creating extra Blofeld-alikes using extreme plastic surgery wasn’t the thing we were most interested in. It was the moon buggy chase scene when Bond was escaping from the Willard Whyte Space Labs compound (interestingly, a gypsum mine located just outside of LA), and the little Honda ATC Bond acquires from his pursuers in the film. Admit it – we were all more bothered about the Honda. Why? Well, the ATC or All-Terrain Cycle, was the first ATV, a booming market in recreation-obsessed America. First appearing in 1969, it featured three high-flotation balloon tyres, an 89cc four-stroke single-cylinder, 7bhp and more character than you could shake a Banana Splits theme tune at (though younger readers may struggle with that reference).

Basically, it was a life-sized toy that could be loaded into the boot of a large car – thank the Swivel-Lok handlebars for that – cost just $595 and came with the capacity to break an ankle at 400ft, thanks to chronic instability. The suspension consisted of the tyres themselves, often running extremely low pressures (according to legend, less than the average human foot) to cope with sand or mud, and quite how Bond managed to escape his own shadow on one of these defeats the laws of physics and contributes to the magic of cinema.

Interestingly, Bond even manages to look suave while piloting this weird little tricycle, even in a desert wearing a rather natty grey suit. Though we’d advise a helmet next time, James.

HIT: Lotus Esprit S1 – The Spy Who Loved Me
Another car made iconic by a Bond appearance, the white wedge first appeared in 1977’s The Spy Who Loved Me, featuring the late Sir Roger Moore. Invariably chased about by perennial villain Jaws – he of the stainless steel dentistry affectation – Bond’s Lotus was unique in that instead of letting water in, as many production Lotuses were prone to at the time, it was actually a fully working submarine with anti-aircraft missiles. It was called ‘Wet Nellie’ – a reference to ‘Little Nellie’ and was piloted by scuba divers as it wasn’t actually – shock – a submarine, but an S1 shell. The actual vehicle is now owned by Elon Musk – yep, that bloke who makes Teslas.

HIT: Aston Martin V8 Vantage – The Living Daylights
Another Aston for Mr Bond in 1987, this time a V8 Vantage in The Living Daylights, starring a new-to-the-role Timothy Dalton. The distinctive B-reg started off as a convertible Volante, but then appeared later ‘winterised’ by Q Branch, by the apparent fitting of an especially seamless hardtop, seeing as the numberplates were the same. Q also managed to include some extras during the mammoth weld-a-thon. Gadgets including a control panel under the centre armrest for the application of such wonders as wheel lasers, missiles – including a head-up targeting system displayed on the windscreen – outriggers, pop-out spiked tyres (now why hasn’t anyone actually invented that yet?), a rocket booster and, somewhat more prosaically, a police radio receiver. The car was also bulletproof, which is probably why it needed the rocket – if all that gear were real, it’d weigh somewhere in the region of 80 million tonnes.

The V8 Vantage – the original, that is – was hailed in 1977 as ‘Britain’s first supercar’, thanks mainly to its impressive (for the time) 170mph top end. Indeed, it managed 60mph in just 5.3secs, pipping the Ferrari Daytona by a tenth, and did so swaddled in enough leather and veneer to sink a battleship. The motor was a 5.3-litre V8 fitted with high-performance cams, and though early cars used carbs, the ones used for The Living Daylights ran fuel injection. Serious Bond trivia comes from the fact that the ghetto blaster rocket launcher that Q fires in his lab in the film was actually operated off camera by the Prince of Wales during a visit, and in 1987 he ordered a Vantage Volante – presumably living out Bond fantasies. The Prince’s Vantage wasn’t stock, mind, and although it didn’t have a rocket, it did without the productions car’s wide arches, front air dam and side skirts – leading to a small run of 26 cars in ‘Prince of Wales’ spec that are now the most sought-after early Eighties Vantages.

HIT: Little Nellie – You Only Live Twice
Amid the dodgy make-up and dubious commentary on race relations, volcanos and ninjas, ‘Little Nellie’ starred as Connery’s secret weapon in 1967’s You Only Live Twice and was actually a real-life Wallis WA-116 Agile autogyro flown by its inventor, Wing Commander Ken Wallis. Basically a shrunken one-man helicopter, Nellie was powered by a 4.3-litre two-stroke engine, and measured just over 11ft, but still managed to pack a decent punch: a pair of machine guns, a pair of rocket launchers with seven rockets each, a sprinkling of air-to-air missiles, two flamethrowers, two smoke bomb things and a small swarm of parachute mines. All of which made her a bit of a flying armoury. Trivia buffs will note that she was actually named after Nellie Wallace – a British music hall star from the early 1900s, and the script for the movie was penned by none other than children’s author Roald Dahl, based on Ian Fleming’s original book.

HIT: Renault 11 TXE – A View To A Kill
Originally marketed by Renault from 1981 to 1988, the Renault 11 (the hatchbacked version of the saloon Renault 9) probably doesn’t seem like the ideal car for Bond, seeing as it’s got the kerb appeal of a brown velour sofa. But when it’s 1985 and you have to chase a very scary woman called May Day (Grace Jones) who has just paraglided from the Eiffel Tower in Paris, a commandeered Renault 11 taxi is apparently just the job. This is the car that became famous for its ability to keep going even after sustaining grievous injury: first the roof gets lopped off as Roger Moore’s Bond drives under a lorry, then the rear half of the car gets amputated when it gets hit by another vehicle. It’s not certain whether this is a genuine testament to the little Renault’s reliability under pressure or a sad indictment of French welding, but it made for entertaining telly. Proper stunts, though – all produced under the auspices of legendary stunt co-ordinator Rémy Julienne, even if it is a bit of a shame to find out that the half-car had little wheels hidden under the back bit…

HIT: Mercury Cougar XR7 – On Her Majesty’s Secret Service
Technically not his car, but that of George Lazenby’s Bond’s future wife, Tracy di Vicenzo (Diana Rigg), the Mercury Cougar XR7 Convertible in 1969’s On Her Majesty’s Secret Service was actually pretty hardcore. It was basically a rebodied Ford Mustang – Mercury’s take on the popular pony car – kitted out with a performance package, which included a ram air hood scoop, rally wheels and high-backed bucket seats, as well as a full gauge kit. In fact, Bond never actually revved up the 428 Cobra Jet Ram Air (conservatively estimated to make 335bhp – though 400bhp was probably nearer the mark), letting Tracy do all the helmsmithery.

Turns out she was pretty good, too, managing to heave an old-school muscle car around on snow, albeit on studded tyres – and enter a stock car race during the chase, eventually leaving her pursuers upside down and on fire. No gadgets or Q Branch help with that, either, just good old-fashioned skills. Bond is obviously impressed, because he ends up marrying her at the end of the film, but it doesn’t end well as she is assassinated by that pesky Blofeld…

HIT: Citroen 2CV – For Your Eyes Only
What it lacked in gadgets, the Citroen 2CV that starred in For Your Eyes Only in 1981 made up in pluck. As Roger Moore’s Bond attempts to escape baddies in more powerful Peugeot 504s with Melina Havelock (Carole Bouquet) in tow, the little yellow peril manages to stop bullets and drive down the side of mountains without breaking. Thank its supremely long-travel suspension for that. It also survives being inverted by Melina, and then thrown back onto its wheels by helpful bystanders, at which point Bond does his casual misogynistic trick of taking over the ‘proper’ driving. Which entails not only escaping, but virtually destroying the entire car (which had had some mods, but not for the benefit of Bond directly).

Stunt supremo Rémy Julienne decided that the standard 2CV’s 29bhp, 602cc twin wouldn’t cut the mustard for stunt duties, and replaced it with a more powerful 1,015cc flat-four from the Citroen GS, making a huge… 54bhp. It’s also one of the few Bond vehicles that spawned a real-life road-going special edition (like the Aston DB9 ‘007’ Edition) in the form of a Citroen 2CV in the same yellow paint with ‘007’ logos on the bonnet, bootlid and doors and stuck-on bulletholes. Tasteful.

MISS: Merchandise, DB9 GT 007 Edition
Ask film fans what 007 drives, and they’ll answer “Aston Martin”. The DB5’s iconic performance in Goldfinger and subsequent cameos has, despite the best efforts of Lotus and BMW, forever defined Bond as an Aston man.

What James Bond would never, ever drive is a run-out special. Hardly in keeping with the cutting-edge reputation of Q Branch, is it? And, likewise, the only way to make the impossibly gorgeous Aston Martin DB9 uncool is to drive one that deliberately references Bond. Anyway, the DB9 has never appeared on-screen in the Bond franchise. It’s like 007 breaking the fourth wall and winking. Totally out of character. Driving this car will not make you wittier, better at fighting or turn you into an irresistible lothario. It’s merchandise.

And that’s not the only time we’ve winced as Bond’s ice-cool name has been besmirched with ill-judged utterances, mistakes and poor car choices. Here are the other worst cringe-moment offenders.

MISS: Product placement, Craig’s hired rep car
After all the consternation over a ‘blonde Bond’, and going to the trouble of creating a new, back-to-the start narrative for Daniel Craig, you’d have thought poor old craggy-face’s first moment in a car as 007 would’ve come in something more exotic than the then-new Mondeo. And thanks to Ford’s overlording product placement deal, Jags, Land Rovers and Volvos are suspiciously prevalent throughout.

MISS: Stunt fail, the flip-flopping Mustang
Two crews and two locations were used to shoot the most ambitious stunt in Diamonds Are Forever’s Vegas-based Mustang Mach 1 chase. Unfortunately, when it was stitched together, someone noticed the car drives into the alley on its right wheels, and reappears balanced on the left. Ah. A hilarious, unexplained in-car shot was inserted to show the Stang apparently rotating within the alley, rather than reshooting the trick.

MISS: Worst Lines, Rog vs Bros
Every 007 has had their share of corny lines, but Craig’s are subtle and Connery’s of the time. The worst has to be a toss-up between the late, great Sir Roger Moore’s “Just keeping the British end up, sir,” after being caught in the act in The Spy Who Loved Me, or Pierce Brosnan’s truly cringeworthy “I thought Christmas only came once a year” quip to a retching Denise Richards to end The World Is Not Enough.

MISS: The least Bond-like car, BMW’s Z3 footnote
There’s product placement (see the Avis Mondeo), then there’s pretending a car will have a starring role, then giving it a paltry two minutes on screen. GoldenEye’s Z3 purports to hide stinger missiles and a self-destruct system, yet we get glimpses of it bumbling along a dusty track, then it’s traded for a plane. Depressingly, BMW still gained a surge in Z3 deposits after the film’s 1996 release.

MISS: How to ruin a stunt with a barrel-roll slide whistle
Still considered one of the most difficult, iconic stunts in movie history, two noises totally ruined the incredible barrel-roll sequence in The Man with the Golden Gun. First, Roger Moore’s shocking “Ah sure am, boy” Southerner accent that’s worse than Brosnan’s British impression. The second? A CBeebies slide-whistle sound effect dubbed over the eye-popping moment his nicked AMC Hornet takes to the Thai sky.

MISS: Disappear and never return – the Aston ‘Vanish’
Frankly, we could’ve filled this page just using Die Another Day’s crimes. Madonna’s ear-gnashing title song, the ice palace, the face-shifting villains – it’s all utter rubbish. But beyond the giant space laser and Brosnan kite-surfing a tsunami, the most unbelievable offender is the adaptive camo Aston Vanquish, which seemingly disappears. You don’t need MythBusters to prove that’s implausible to the point of insulting. Stick to ejector seats, Q.

Mourinho: Martial will improve this season
August 19, 2017 |
Football News
Jose Mourinho has expressed his total faith in Anthony Martial and backed the Manchester United forward to become a better player throughout the season.

Martial was a revelation during his first campaign with the Reds, in 2015/16, when he scored 17 goals in 49 appearances. His second term was less successful on an individual basis, after scoring eight times in 42 games, but he did lift the FA Community Shield, EFL Cup and Europa League.

The 21-year-old completed his first pre-season training camp with United over the summer and that appears to be paying dividends on the pitch, following a number of impressive performances in friendlies and his excellent finish in last weekend’s 4-0 win over West Ham in the Premier League.

“I have faith in him,” Mourinho said of Martial. “Probably, the player I was looking at [in the transfer market] was not a pure winger, because I have pure wingers. The player I was looking for would allow me to play three at the back and do the wing-backs. As a pure attacking player, Martial is a good player.

“He is one of the players who will have a better season than last season. I look at my players and I am sure some will be better than they were last season, and Anthony is one of those, for sure.”

Mourinho has assembled a young squad and, like Martial, he expects them all to get better as time goes on. The experience of playing in the Champions League - some for the first time - will also benefit them.

“They’re all young,” Mourinho explained during his pre-match press conference. “Micki and Mata are close to their 30s. Romelu is 24, Lingard and Rashford are a good age and they’re all playing. They are also national team players with the chance to play international games.

“We are in the Champions League, so it is the first time for Rashford to play Champions League. Anthony had a bit with Monaco, Lingard had a few matches but not more than that. For Romelu, it is the first time. For them, the Champions league can be a great experience with their development.”

Celebrities / I Cried Everyday When My Wife Left-emeka Ike by CHOPUP411(m): 12:28am On Aug 19, 2017
EMEKA IKE OPENS UP ON HIS CRASHED MARRIAGE Love never dies, I still love her and I don’t believe we are divorced I gave her opportunity to swallow me Pastor Chris Okotie could have helped but he failed I have moved on with my life— Emeka Ike is still finding it difficult to believe that he’s no longer married to his wife, Suzanne Emma. The unexpected happened earlier this year, when his 14-year-old marriage to Emma was dissolved by a Lagos Island Customary Court over alleged incessant battery. Emma had on July 13, 2015, approached the court to dissolve the marriage, accusing her former husband of physically and verbally abusing her throughout the duration of their marriage. But the star actor was not ready to let her go, as he pleaded with the court to reconcile them. Unfortunately, his plea yielded no results as the court finally dissolved their marriage on the grounds that it was beyond redemption. Since then, Emeka Ike has never been the same again. According to him, the most painful part of his life was watching the mother of his four children walk out of their marriage despite his plea to reconcile with her which fell on deaf ears. He shares his pains, his anguish and regrets, vowing, however, to unravel the circumstances that led to the crashing of the marriage. He also believes that his wife was used to blackmail him by those who want him dead. You took a long break from acting, what happened? I tried to restructure the man, Emeka Ike. Emeka Ike is a leader and as a leader, you need to appraise and reappraise your empire and achievements. So, I have been appraising my constituency and I am happy that we are moving forward. At a point, you relocated to Abuja from Lagos. What actually prompted your decision to move to Abuja? I felt that my life was seriously threatened in Lagos. I have said it before that I am going to arrest some people very soon. In fact, some people took advantage of the AGN crisis to threaten my life and all that will be sorted out very soon by the police. I relocated to Abuja to avoid a situation where I would be walking on the streets of Lagos and a criminal would gun me down. I used my discretion to stay away while I watched from afar what was happening in Lagos. That was why that woman (his ex wife) is no longer living with me. God knows I am not a wife beater. I didn’t touch her and my children testified to that in court. I don’t know what came over her and who used her to blackmail me. But all that will be unravelled soon. Are you saying that you never raised your hands on your ex wife? Have you watched that one movie, where the wife was saying “everything is alright between me and my husband. He takes care of me and provides all my needs”. That was the situation between my wife and I. If I didn’t know I would have blamed her sudden change of character on my enemies. I love her so much. Why would she blackmail me by claiming that I was always beating her up when I didn’t. To avoid the disturbing mess, I had to abandon my businesses and house in Lagos and find a new life in Abuja. Does it mean you were not prepared for the divorce? I wasn’t. I don’t even believe we are divorced and I cannot remarry again. I am a real Christian and Christians don’t divorce. I told the court that I’m not divorcing my wife but they went ahead and got an injunction against a High Court order. Why was she trying to walk out of her marriage? Who was advising her to divorce me? I must see to the end of this matter because they have put my children out there without a mother. She’s in pain wherever she is right now because I know they are dealing with her. I learnt that she was beaten black and blue by one wife snatcher sometime ago, beside Mobil Petrol Station on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. My own wife beaten up like a common criminal! I want to know what has gone wrong with my wife, I want to know the devil that is behind this. What is the extent of blackmail that brought her to this degrading level? The Inspector General of Police will be investigating into the matter very soon. While doing this, I have to stay away from Lagos because they could be after me. You accused Pastor Chris Okotie of Household of God Church International Ministries of being the brain behind your marital crisis. How did he come into the picture? The guy who is confusing my wife attends his church. He’s one of the elders of the church. It’s a church arrangement. When there is crisis in the family, a true man of God should invite both husband and wife with the aim of resolving their differences but Chris Okotie refused to pick my calls. Whenever I called him on the telephone, he usually avoided my calls. As a man of God, he was supposed to use his position to save our marriage. I didn’t chase my wife out of my house, I wanted Chris Okotie to advise her to return to her husband but he refused to pick my calls. He did not bother to find out what went wrong between us. While I am still alive, my wife was demanding that I should ‘will’ part of my property to her. She shut down a school I spent millions of naira to establish. Who was telling her to make such a demand? Where is she taking the property to? What happens to our children who will inherit my property? She was insisting on getting her own share of my property. At that point, I had to leave Lagos for Abuja because some people were strongly behind her and my life was no longer safe. But I’m coming back to Lagos soon. My house and property are still in Lagos. Nothing is hidden under the earth that cannot be unearthed someday. She blackmailed me for what I am not. You will feel sorry for a man whose wife was blackmailed to blackmail the entire family. Despite the pain she has caused you, you still declare your undying love for her? •Emeka Ike and ex-wife Love never dies. Real love doesn’t die, forget what we are talking about. The Bible says that “love covers multitude of sin.” She’s the mother of my children. She was nobody when I met her, she never knew her father. I built a house for her family in Lagos and also in Isoko. I trained her up to the master’s degree level. I gave her the exposure she needed in life. There are thousands of pretty girls who would want to marry me the first week we got divorced. But I am a gentleman, it is not about marriage for me now, it’s about doing the right thing. What is wrong with my woman? If it’s something we can redeem her from, we will still redeem her. Forget about marrying her again. I don’t need to marry again, but I need to know what was wrong with my wife. I need to know why she started blackmailing me. Can you welcome her back into your life if she returns to you? Accepting her back is not the problem, but let her confess and get herself back. I believe she’s under the influence of something. How did you feel watching her walk out of her marriage ? It’s the most painful part of my life. I cried for 24 hours every day for three to four years. I was just asking myself what is happening to me. You know, in blackmail, you will not know what is going on because somebody is playing the game. It was much later that I knew what was happening to me. I need to know the strength of these blackmailers because we have law in this country. And with the law, we will look at the issues pro-actively. Are your children missing their mother? They are not because they feel disappointed in her. She was their heroine. Her son was begging her, saying “mummy please come back because of me.” But she replied him; “I am going to marry another man and have other children.” If you can say that to your first son, it’s either you have a mental problem or you are not okay spiritually. She even said to the judge that she wanted to have other children after having four children. What is wrong with her? Her case beats my imagination. I have been blackmailed, undermined and I have been crushed. She closed down my school on the day I travelled, an investment that a student at St Nicholas was paying N385, 000, per session as school fees amounting to N880,000 every year. She went to the landlord and asked him to come and reclaim his property. Who is behind all these things? You cannot be unfair to me and get away with it, not when I’m still alive and seeking justice. I met her on the street and I saved her from the street. She told me she’s from a poor home and that she never met her father. I promised her that I would be her father and her lover. I gave her too much opportunity to swallow me. I have moved on with my life—Wife Meanwhile, when contacted,Emma said, “The marriage is over. I have moved on with my life. I am not willing to talk about it again. His actions have not shown that he’s remorseful.

Politics / Governor Ayade Is Giving Our Job To Chinese by CHOPUP411(m): 8:41am On Aug 18, 2017
Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River State hosted Chinese citizens the other week. They were representatives of one of the provinces in China. The visit had to do with an agreement signed by both parties. In the process, it was announced that the governor gave some jobs to his visitors. Giving jobs to foreigners isn’t the issue. Giving jobs that Nigerians could easily handle to foreigners is what I have a challenge with. The Cross River State governor signed out a job for a geological survey of his state to the Chinese. Is it that we don’t have geologists who can do this?

I was a secondary school student when I heard of a university course and profession called Geology for the first time. For the fascination it held for me, it was one of the courses I would have contemplated studying if I had been in the sciences. Incidentally, it was almost the same manner Political Science attracted me that I was attracted to Geology. There was this NYSC member in my school who taught us Government. He said he read a course called Political Science. So, I desired to read Political Science. Years later, he said to me that he had said I should not read Political Science but I did. I said it was because I loved the course. But Geology had fascinated me for a stranger reason.

One of my friends in secondary school had an elder brother who was a geologist. He gave us a ride in his car from school one day and that was how I met him for the first time. He was already practising, and was on his way to a site. How did he get me attracted to his profession? He was an avid reader of novels. The James Hardly Chase series, the African Writers Series (publishers of ‘Things Fall Apart’), Pacesetters etc. I was intrigued by a geologist who read novels. As a kid, I had always read every story book I could get. In primary school, I had read all the fiction work in Yoruba written by D.O. Fagunwa before I ever read the smallest English story book from cover to cover. I was taught how to read Yoruba in primary school. These days, it’s posh to not teach indigenous languages in ‘posh’ schools. In secondary school, I had continued this trend of reading everything and I persuaded my friend to bring his brother’s novels for me. I was faithful. He would bring it. I would read, return it, and he would bring another. If I didn’t complete the entire set of books under the African Writers Series and the James Hardly Chase series as of that time, I must be very close.

I recall this story on realising that the Cross River State governor gives our jobs to foreigners. The first thing that struck my mind was that Nigeria had been producing geologists for as long as it had been in existence. But when we have a job geologists can handle, we give it out. What has happened in Cross River State is another sample in a pattern, and I ask myself why we keep doing things the same way but expect a different result. What is so magical about geological mapping that the government has to import some exotic foreigners? I should think geological mapping is something any fresh graduate could handle, let alone eminent Nigerians who have distinguished themselves in this field.

Giving the job to such distinguished professionals isn’t where it stops. There are the younger Nigerian geologists and graduates in related fields who would have been brought on board to gain some field experience. This means funds are retained on our shores. If some technical equipment were needed for this job that we didn’t have, the Cross River State governor could have ordered for them. And if he wanted the guarantee that a white face (or other shades) must be involved, he could have had one Chinese brought it in an advisory capacity. But what we see in this case is that about nine Chinese were imported by the Cross Rivers State Government to handle geological mapping of the state. The number cannot stop there. Trust the Chinese. They would equally import chefs and gardeners, crediting the bill to the Cross River State Government’s account.

There are other angles to this matter. For instance, the question could be asked: Does it mean no geological survey of Cross River State has ever been carried out since its inception? I do not know this detail, but at least I’ve seen how some federal agencies regularly display mineral resources along with the names of the states where they’re obtained. The official claim is that there’s no state in Nigeria that doesn’t have certain quantities of mineral resources. Our officials make the same claim about other natural endowments with regard to what industry should be where, and the kind of agriculture that soil in different parts of the country can support. Also, I’m sure there’s a state agency in Cross River that has the same information. How do the federal and state agencies know what is where if nothing has been done before about geological mapping in Cross River State? What is new in the job that Ayade has contracted the Chinese to do? How much is he paying out in dollars at a time we mention recession?

These questions call attention to the harm we do ourselves as a nation, and it shocks that our leaders who should know lead in this. An agency in Abuja has the information that Ayade is paying to get. An agency in Cross River State also has the information. This meant our resources had been utilised in the past to get it. In the event, this latest contract amounts to duplication and a waste of scarce resources. Moreover, at these concerned agencies there are professionals who’re recruited and paid wages as civil servants to handle such issues. When they retire their huge pension is on our neck as a people to settle. Now that there’s a job for these civil servants to do to justify both their wages and pensions, the Cross River State governor is paying foreigners to do it.

This aspect brings up another angle about our culture of wasting resources. It’s about officials that we pay salaries in government agencies, but we don’t make them work for what they earn. In conversations, I point out that if a Nigerian sees houseflies having a carnival on the meat on the table of a meat seller in the market, there’s an official in a government agency who receives a salary to ensure that those carnivals don’t happen or that the meat seller is sanctioned, but he doesn’t do what he is paid to do. There are laws about the safety of food items and officials are paid to enforce but anyone could see how garri that Nigerians eat is exposed to houseflies and dust beside the road. I was surprised the other day when I saw Environmental Officers (from a federal agency that should enforce hygienic practices in the market place) defending their budget at the National Assembly. So they exist?

Recently, the European Union banned importation of Nigeria’s beans to Europe, insisting our beans contained chemicals that were too dangerous for human consumption. Note that the same is sold to Nigerians. I was at an event where the EU Ambassador to ECOWAS said banning Nigeria’s beans wasn’t just for the safety of European residents alone, but one measure to make our government realise that it’s feeding Nigerians with poison. Yet, there’s a federal ministry with a Quarantine Department (that should guarantee food that’s without poison), fully staffed with all manner of professionals and staff members who draw fantastic salaries and allowances.

On the whole, what has happened in Cross River State further calls attention to one of our leadership challenges – lack of commitment to wholistic approach to policies, how we run government. Our officials say they want to create jobs, but some of their actions are the direct opposite of what they proclaim. It’s baffling that at a time when everyone knows that buying Nigerian products and thereby create jobs are part of the solutions to our current economic challenges, giving jobs to foreigners is what many of our leaders are doing for reasons that only they can explain.

Religion / Still On RCCG Convention 2017 by CHOPUP411(m): 9:02am On Aug 16, 2017
RCCG 2017 Convention: Pastor Adeboye reveals secret wooden staff for miracles.

On Thursday, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), announced that the following day, Friday, would be a “special day” and urged people to fast till about 3pm for it. He also urged people who were planning to be at the Camp, along the Lagos-Ibadan highway to come early. Fridays at RCCG Conventions are noted for peak attendance and wonders.

Pastor Adeboye was right.

“I have never seen a thing like this all my life,” said a fair-complexioned lady of about 45 years old on Friday afternoon as she dangled her car key‎ unconsciously.

Like the reporter, as early as 4.30 p.m. for an event that would start at 8pm, she had to park her car near the entrance of the new Camp at Simawa, and walk several metres to the Arena, the 3-kilometre-by-three-kilometre auditorium, which was purposeful built for an envisaged crowd of that size. But it would seem that on a day like that the auditorium would still come under pressure.

Many people had considered exit challenges and parked along the road metres before the entrance.

By 5p.m, The Arena was almost packed to capacity.

It was to be a night of multiple highpoints ‎witnessed by Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, state governors, including Godwin Obaseki of Edo, Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom, Samuel Ortom of Benue and others top political office holders, top traditional leaders, and many other dignitaries who were actually participants rather than mere observers.

That an attendance and a population that large was kept safe without any incident was obviously one of the highpoints of the night – a miracle in itself.

With the completed sections of The Arena full to capacity, over three million people must have been there. Amazingly, the old auditorium at the Redemption Camp was almost full, even without the physical presence of Pastor Adeboye there. The auditorium seats three million people.

People also participated at viewing centres of the numerous RCCG parishes around the country, and in 194 other countries around the world.

Another highpoint of the “special day” of the praise singing and dancing, sermons and prayers was the call for “barren” women who had been blessed by God through prayers of the church to have babies in the last 20 months to take the children to the altar at the Arena for dedication.

From the reporter’s vantage front seat position, he tried to count the number of joyous women pouring in from his right; he counted over two thousand and gave up when the surge made it impossible.

People were also pouring in from all angles. In the end, an estimated pool of thousands of mothers had gathered at the altar, some of them shedding tears of joy.

The scene at the old auditorium, beamed on the screen, showed a similar pool. The same exercise was done at other viewing centres.

“I rejoice with you all because my father visited your wombs and gave you joy,” he said as he prayed for them.

Testimonies

In a church that doesn’t do image laundering, a count of the women was not taken. It would have been a waste of precious time anyway because of the numbers; same if attendance at such events should be counted.

The pace at such ceremonies does not also give room for the publicity of instant miracles, but it does allow people who have experienced God’s touch in the recent past to show appreciation to God in testimony-sharing ‎ sessions.

Yesterday, many families who had looked for the fruit of the womb, some for many years, gave testimony. Other testimonies came from a UK-resident whose vocal cord had been ripped mistakenly by doctors, who still wonder why he can speak; a female US citizen, who US doctors had declared mentally incapable of achieving high education because of an illness that afflicted her but had her mental capacity restored and now has a doctorate degree; many people with complicated diseases who had been cured among others.

The Sermons

Ahead of Pastor Adeboye, Rev Joe Olaiya, a popular evangelist had ministered on the futility of sinners trying to please or “buy God” with giving and sacrifices without begging for His mercy and salvation. When he did the altar call for sinners to seek God’s mercy, a large crowd of about the size of a football field responded at The Arena alone.

That was followed by a prayer session led by Pastor Mrs. Folu Adeboye for “nations and leaders at all level‎s.” She specifically prayed for the speedy recovery of President Buhari, as the church always does.

David Oyedepo

Bishop David Oyedepo, founder of Living Faith Church Worldwide, also known as Winners’ Chapel, ministered next. He stressed the importance of praise. He listed the power of praise as including the invitation of God’s presence and glory, which provides His favour, healing, access to revelation, breakthrough, and fresh oil.

IMG_20170813_093025
“Even if you have lost something precious, there is need to praise God because you didn’t lose everything,” he advised.

Pastor Adeboye

Pastor Adeboye, dressed in a green outfit, as his wife, took the pulpit next after songs from the Mass Choir of over a thousand members.

He also preached praise, showing why there is no excuse for one not to praise God. He said among every set of people, there are three subsets, comprising those who have lost battles in life, those still engaged in battles, and those who have won battles recently.
For all three groups, he said, there is need to praise God continuously‎ – the first set for hope and restoration; the second for God to fight their battles; and the third, who should not forget God and go partying because life is full of unending round of battles.

IMG_20170813_092924
As usual he also invited people to the altar for salvation.

The climax

He took the night to a climax when he called for special attention to announce a special prayer session.

Like the night before, he took time to prepare the congregation for what some people might deem childish.

He extolled the achievements of the founder of the church, the late Rev Joseph Akindayomi, recalling that although he was illiterate God had done many great things for the church through revelations He gave him.

Among them was the name of the church given an illiterate in English; that he would travel the world over, which he did before he died; and spread the church, which is now 195 countries and counting.

That said, he paused and let out what was a secret to many people: God had instructed Rev Akindayomi to make a short wooden staff to be blessed; and to be handed over to his successor.

Hmmmmmm, the congregation went quiet for more information about that; and when he lifted up the staff, people went wild with excitement.

Again, he called for attention and explained that the staff had been given to him years ago but God ordered that it should be used sparingly: he was going to use it at the Convention for three special prayers, including a prayer for God to make a way where there is no way. He would raise it‎ raise up, mention a prayer point and the congregation would pray.

The prayers done, he raised it up again to bless handkerchiefs – as he did and prayed, the congregation waved the handkerchiefs with shouts of “Halleluyah, halleluyah.”

“What a night!”‎ Many people were heard saying later as they streamed out of the Arena at about 2a.m on Saturday, forgetting what it had taken them to get to the venue, and the challenge of exiting the packed venue.

WOMEN in Iyede community, Isoko North local government area, Delta state, have shut that axis of the busy Ughelli – Asaba Road to traffic in an intensifying protest over the menace of herdsmen in the area. Iyede women shut Ughelli Asaba road over herdsmen menace The women, joined by the community youths and men at the background, set off for the mass action at dawn, denying vehicles access to and fro on that axis. “Our major pain are the deaths, rape and trauma being suffered by our mothers and young girls at the mercy of marauding herdsmen. If we can no longer go to our farms again because of herdsmen, on what do we now survive as poor farmers. “It is as much inciting that the government of the day does not even care about our plight. We will remain here. No car will past through Iyede till those who should care give assurance that the herdsmen are out of our lives. They are no more welcomed in our land”, one of the protesters screamed.

Nairaland / General / Flood Hit Two Communities In Kogi State by CHOPUP411(m): 12:04pm On Aug 15, 2017
Two communities in Kogi, Okudigbo and Odochala in Ibaji Local Government have been submerged by flood which also destroyed property. The increasing menace of flood has forced the Kogi government to declare a state of emergency on environment and decided to give priority to environmental issues. The state Deputy Governor, Mr Simon Achuba, unveiled the plan when he received a officials of Ecological Fund Office in the office of the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. The officials arrived in Lokoja for the assessment of the flood and erosion sites in Kogi. He said the government has also set aside the last Saturday of every month as environmental sanitation day to mobilise the citizens to clean their surroundings. “We are also very lucky to have someone in charge of the ministry of environment who is very effective and proactive in carrying out her duties. “We are very grateful to the Federal Government for taking up these issues and for giving us the needed support which the state deserves,” he said. Earlier, Mr Abdullazeez Umar, who spoke on behalf of the team, said that the exercise was approved by the Federal Executive Council, as part of efforts to tackle the ecological problems facing the country via the effective management, co-ordination, monitoring and implementation of programmes. The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Mrs Rosemary Osikoya, said that the ministry had earlier presented the ecological reports on 19 local government areas in the state to the team. She said the ministry had met with the team and catalogued 194 flood and erosion sites in the 19 local government areas with the help of some experts, which represented 50 per cent of the total areas that were supposed to be covered. She noted the state government last week organised a workshop on climate change and afforestation, which was attended by many stakeholders. Besides, Osikoya said that the government had reopened the state’s forest reserves, and launched tree planting for the 2017 afforestation campaign. She complained that aside the increase in traffic due to proximity of Kogi to Abuja, a river in Orokere-Amuro, has also changed its natural course, using the federal road as its flowing path and flooding some communities along its new route. “We are very excited that the state governor is paying adequate attention to those special environmental issues, which have drawn the attention of the Ecological Fund Office,’’ she said.

Speaking on a topic, “Jericho walls must fall down” at the ongoing 65th annual convention of the church, Pastor Adeboye went memory lane to relive the early life of the man described as the greatest African ambassador of the apostolic Christian faith to the world. Illustrating his point that when God proposes something great for some people, enemies will bring all manner of problem to block their way, pointing out that God knew that Idahosa was going to be a great evangelist and the devil also had a rough idea, so he put an obstruction on his way. According to him, “when late Archbishop Benson Idahosa was born, he was very sickly, so sickly that one day his mother said, since this boy was going to die, let him stop wasting my time. She dumped him on the dunghill. The mother went to check him on the second day to see if he had died, but the boy was alive. “The mother said stop troubling me. When the mother went there after third day, the boy was still alive without any food, so she brought him home and that boy became the great Archbishop Benson Idahosa.” He said, “there is something mighty that is within you that the devil is trying to prevent from happening but I can assure you that God will remove such wall of Jericho.” Continuing, Adeboye who abandoned his Ph.D in applied mathematics for the pulpit, also illustrated his message with initial financial challenges that confronted Bill Gates, a co-founder of Microsoft and an American business magnate, investor, author and philanthropist. Adeboye argued that as a student, Gates was thinking about computer, he had the idea but he had no money to bring the idea to fruition. He had to borrow money from his friend. “Can you imagine…”suppose Bill Gates died without the computer, can you imagine where the world would be today.” The General Overseer, noted for his humility, also used his life history to illustrate the point, saying “my mother was a very strong woman. God bless her memory. She had three daughters and a son and she told my daddy that was all. And when my mother said that’s all, that’s all and period. I was not born yet and she said that’s all. “Later, the only son she had died and she was advised to try again one more time, that she never could tell the baby might be a boy and that was how I was born….I know that God has a thousand ways whereas man has no one but one thing is clear, because I was born, that is why you are here today. “There is something great that God wants to do through you and whatever God has to remove so that you will reach that goal, He will remove them,” he said, giving one more illustration. “Several years ago, Pastor Kunle Ajayi (saxophonist and Director of Music at the Redeemed Christian Church of God) was dying, the mother thought she was going to lose him. I smiled and said she did not know who she gave birth to,” Adeboye said, emphasising the need for Christians to praise God at all times. “The only thing you need to do is to praise the One, Who is destiny maker. Moses was a song writer and a singer. David was an instrumentalist, singer and song writer, Hannah was also a song writer.” . According to him, there is something called destiny, and it simply means the purpose of God for your life. “God said to Jeremiah before I formed thee, I knew thee, I had already sanctified and ordained thee prophet to the nations. God is a builder and like every good builder, He builds according to plan, He does not begin to build until the plan is ready, before He formed you, before your father met your mother, God had a plan for your life and the good news is that the plan is a good one and not that of evil for you to fulfil your destiny. “God told Moses that His plan for his life was for him to bring Israelites out of Egypt to worship Him on a mountain. Concerning David, his destiny was that he was going to be king, God had planned it that he would be king. God told Joshua that His purpose for his destiny, is to take Israelites to the promised land and divide the land for them. “The wall of Jericho is that thing that stands between you and the fulfilment of your destiny, anything blocking your way to destiny is wall of Jericho. For example, Moses’ wall of Jericho was the Red Sea and that is why God breath on the Red Sea and it parted because God had spoken that Moses would bring His people to worship on the mountain. “On the part of David, as soon as he was anointed King, devil tried to stop his destiny. He sent a lion and bear which David killed and then he sent Goliath who wanted to get over the throne before David could get there. Goliath was the wall of Jericho for David. He wanted to block him from fulfilling his destiny but at the end of the day, David cut off the head of Goliath. “When Joshua got to Jericho and saw the big wall, he was confused but God instructed him on what to do and by the time Joshua followed the instruction, the wall of Jericho fell down,” Adeboye preached. According to him, “God knows the end from the beginning. He is aware of all that will happen to us in life. Therefore, do not be rattled by the tricks of the enemy. Before they built the wall of Jericho, God was around, He knew a day was coming when Joshua would pass through it. And so it is with you all”
