I have always said it, and here I am repeating it — Nigeria cannot afford to have individuals from the same backgrounds as those implicated in the country’s insecurity challenges occupying sensitive security positions. The Americans are not as careless as the Nigerian government! The truth behind Nigeria’s insecurity is not far-fetched — Islam and Fulani are majorly fingered.

Why on earth does Nigeria have people from this same background – Fulani and Muslims as Defence Ministers and as the National Security Adviser? It is a misnomer! I personally have a soft spot for Malam Nuhu Ribadu — he is an upright man — but he also comes from that background. So, like Badaru and Matawalle, he may have to step aside.

This is the time for Nigeria to take its security architecture seriously — no room for sabotage!

This actually reminds me of a young Muslim couple I met some time ago in a hospital here in Lagos. Someone I knew—my tenant, actually—had just put to bed, and I went to visit her at the hospital. It was there that I met the young Muslim couple. The wife had also just been delivered of a baby that same day.

All of a sudden, I saw the husband holding the very fragile baby in his hands, reciting some Islamic verses while chewing something in his mouth and then passing that substance to the newborn in a mouth-to-mouth kiss! Just a few hours later, the baby developed a very high fever. The young couple was in a panic; the wife was already crying, and the husband was pacing aimlessly up and down—terrified.
Doctors were called in, and the baby was taken away for treatment.

I stood up and walked over to the man. I asked if he knew that he was responsible for the sudden high fever their newborn had developed. He was shocked and asked me how. I told him plainly: the mouth-to-mouth ritual he performed on the baby. I asked what exactly he had transferred from his own mouth into the baby’s mouth. He explained that it was Dabinu—dates—and that the practice was a "suna Anobi" — sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad. The baby could have died; thank God the doctors saved his life.

I therefore don’t blame these new parents.
