HealthWorld's First Human Head Transplant 'successfully' Carried Out by chuka85(op): 11:45pm On Sep 29, 2018
Italian neurosurgeon Sergio Canavero announced an experiment to reattach the head of a corpse to a body had been achieved as planned.
He said the test showed it was possible to reattach the spine, nerves, blood vessels, veins and skin from the head to the body.
The next step will be to carry out the procedure using a live, but brain dead, human being who has agreed to organ donation, before the first attempt at a living person with a functioning brain is made.

Dr Canavero, is dubbed Dr Frankenstein for his bid to be the first medic to carry out a full head transplant on a living human.
He claims eventually a successful head transplant will lead to "immortality" for those who can afford it and mega rich business "tycoons" whose bodies are failing will be queuing up to buy the procedure and fuse their age-old head onto the body of an athletic person in their 20s or 30s.

Professor Canavero, director of the Turin Advanced Neuromodulation Group, announced the success at a press conference in Vienna today.
The procedure was carried out by a team led by Dr Xiaoping Ren, who last year grafted a head onto the body of a monkey.
Mr Canavero promised a full report of the Harbin Medical University team's procedure and a timeframe for the live transplant within a few days.
He said: "For too long nature has dictated her rules to us.
"We're born, we grow, we age and we die. For millions of years humans has evolved and 110 billion humans have died in the process.
"That's genocide on a mass scale.
"We have entered an age where we will take our destiny back in our hands.
"it will change everything. It will change you at every level.
"The first human head transplant, in the human mode, has been realised.
"The surgery lasted 18 hours. The paper will be released in a few days.'
"Everyone said it was impossible, but the surgery was successful."
He said the next step of using a brain dead organ donor would pave the way for a real operation.

In 2015 Mr Canavero announced he had a volunteer for the first live operation.
He described how he would have just seconds to decapitate disabled volunteer Valery Spiridonov, 31, before attaching his "live" head to an able-bodied dead donor patients' body.
He said within minutes blood would be flowing between his brain and "new body" and the whole operation would be over in under an hour, but post surgery procedures could go on more than 24 hours.
Speaking about the corpse procedure today, he said: "And that is the final step for the formal head transplant for a medical condition which is imminent.
"It will be for a medical, neurological condition, not for life-extension.
"This is a medical condition for people who are suffering awfully so it isn't a joke."

There has been criticism from the medical world as a whole, amid claims the procedure on a corpse has negligible scientific or medical benefits.
Dr James Fildes, NHS principal research scientist at the University Hospital of South Manchester's Transplant Centre, said: 'Unless Canavero or Ren provide real evidence that they can perform a head, or more appropriately, a whole body transplant on a large animal that recovers sufficient function to improve quality of life, this entire project is morally wrong.
"Perhaps far more worryingly, this endeavour appears to revolve around immortality, but in each case a body is needed for the transplant, and therefore a human needs to die as part of the process.
Where does Canavero propose to get the donor body from if the goal is to tackle the laws of nature?

"Has Canavero considered how he will tackle acute rejection of the constituent parts of the head?
"What will rejection of the skin, muscles, eyes, and brain manifest as? I hope this is not just egotistical pseudoscience."
Dr Jan Schnupp, professor of neuroscience at the University of Oxford, added: "I find it inconceivable that ethics committees in any reputable research or clinical institutions would give a green light to living human head transplants in the foreseeable future.
"Indeed, attempting such a thing given the current state of the art would be nothing short of criminal."
Dr Hunt Batjer, president elect of the American Association for Neurological Surgeons, told CNN: "I would not wish this on anyone. I would not allow anyone to do it to me as there are a lot of things worse than death.'

"As a neuroscientist, I would really quite like the general public to be reassured that neither I nor any of my colleagues think that beheading people for extremely long shot experiments is acceptable. It is not."
Mr Canavero announced in September 2016, a'Frankenstein' like plan to reanimate human corpses in trials to test if it is possible to reconnect the spinal cord of a head to another body and then stimulate the nervous system with electrical pulses.
In an article for the Surgical Neurology International, Dr Canavero pointed to the Frankenstein story, where the monster was brought to life using corpses and electricity, and experiments in the 1800s on dead criminals.
In May this year, scientists carried out a head transplant on a rat.
They fixed the heads of smaller donor rats onto the bodies of larger ones, but the two headed-creatures survived for an average of just 36 hours.
However, it was managed without causing blood loss-related brain damage to the donor, said the team including Mr Canavero

HealthBlind Woman Saved Her Life By Learning To Swim -- At 50 by chuka85(op): 11:11pm On Sep 29, 2018
Vivian Stancil never thought she'd become a swimmer, much less a competitive one with a wall full of medals.
"When I was younger, for a woman of color, swim was a taboo," the 71-year-old says poolside in Riverside, California.
Stancil's hazel eyes light up when she talks about what swimming means to her. "The water is my best friend."
Her mother died when she was just 7 years old. Her father, an alcoholic who had tuberculosis, also died. Stancil, the oldest of five children, had to grow up fast. "So here I was, taking care of a set of twin sisters and two brothers until the school found out I was supposed to be in school."
The siblings were separated -- sent to different foster homes. Stancil ended up living in three foster homes. "One foster parent didn't care for me because I was too dark. I had a difficult time."
At age 19, her sight began to fail because of a rare condition called retinitis pigmentosa, an inherited disorder that breaks down cells in the retina. The National Institutes of Health estimates that the disorder affects 1 in 4,000 people worldwide.
Each year, as she got older, Stancil's eyesight got worse.
"I don't see anything today."
Weight ballooned to 319 pounds
Despite those challenges, Stancil went to college, got a bachelor's degree and ended up teaching kindergarten in California's Riverside and Long Beach school districts for more than 20 years.
When she retired, her weight started to go up. At just 5 feet tall, Stancil ballooned to 319 pounds. She didn't exercise, was depressed and had no motivation: "I was always angry at somebody."
She and her husband, Turner, would eat out often with friends. They called themselves "The Eating Club."
Vivian Stancil has won more than 200 awards for swimming in the National Senior Games program.
"We knew every restaurant in this city," Stancil recalled. "We ate everything from fried chicken, ribs -- anything that we could think of, we ate."
By age 50, Stancil's health was critical. Her blood pressure was sky-high -- 200 over 100 -- and she had diabetes. Her doctor's words stunned her into action.
"He told me at 60 I was going to die, and I didn't want to die."
She told her friends how bad things were. They suggested that she swim, because "fat floats." None of her friends knew how to swim, but they knew that Stancil's options were limited: Her 319 pounds made even walking hard.
"They didn't want me to have a heart attack from running in the L.A. Marathon."
Taking the plunge
Stancil had never swum a day in her life. She found a coach and, at 50, took the plunge.
"When I first started swim lessons, I was just crying like a kid," Stancil recalled. "The coach was yelling, 'jump in, Vivian! I'm not going to let you drown.' I said, 'the water is too deep.' He said, 'you can't see no way.' "
That insult did it. "I got mad at him and jumped in, and I've been loving it since."
She learned to count how many strokes it takes to get to the wall. She also listens to how the water sounds when it hits the plastic lane lines. It sounds different near the wall, she says.

Stancil began to lose her sight at age 19 from a condition called retinitis pigmentosa.
It's 5 in the morning, the time Stancil and her coach like to train before the crowds hit the pool in Riverside.
Stancil's husband of nearly 40 years, a retired VA hospital administrator, walks her a few blocks to that pool three times a week.
Turner Stancil is pulling a wood cart full of his wife's supplies while she holds on to his arm. Inside the cart are a couple of large water bottles, a towel, a swim cap, goggles and flippers to strengthen her back kick.
From a size 24 to a size 12
Stancil knew that she had to change her eating, too. Her love for leafy green vegetables grew, and she started to cook more.
On the day CNN arrived, Stancil insisted that we eat brunch with her after the swim. She whipped up a batch of scrambled eggs mixed with broccoli, black beans, avocado and a few other veggies, with wheat toast.
Stancil used to weigh 319 pounds, had high blood pressure and diabetes. Then her doctor said she would die at 60 if she didn't change.
"Have you ever had 'Slap Yo Mama' seasoning?" she asked the crew as she sauteed.
Stancil has lost over 100 pounds: "I'm down from a size 24 to a 12." Her blood pressure is now 114 over 76, even lower than the standard recommendation of 120 over 80.
Competing in Senior Games
As she slimmed down, she quickly became competitive, taking part in the National Senior Games qualifiers in Long Beach. In 20 years, she has won 271 medals on the local and state level, despite having had two hip replacements.
"I'm hoping to win at the national level since my hips are taken care of," the swimmer said confidently.
Stancil started a foundation to provide free swimming lessons for the youth of Riverside, California.
Stancil has made a lot of friends along the way.
"Everybody is rooting for me," she said, beaming. "My fastest swim is freestyle. I love to challenge people."
Stancil's coach, Garret Shimko of the Riverside Aquatics Association, says that "for anyone who starts at that age where Vivian is right now is incredible."
"She's always like, 'what do I need to improve?' It keeps me honest too, you know, so I'm not slacking on her, either."
Giving back
Today, Stancil serves as a commissioner on two of Riverside's city boards: human relations and disabilities. She's also an ordained minister who even has a pulpit set up in her house. Next to it is a long dining table for fellowship.
She has two main goals in life: "To try and get older people to get off the couch. I don't care if you don't swim. You can walk; you can play tennis; you can play pickup ball; you can bowl -- do something in your life. And take somebody else with you."
Her second goal: to prevent adults and kids from drowning. She holds two swim clinics a year as part of her Vivian Stancil Olympian Foundation, which also helps seniors and youth participate in athletics.
"We're here for a purpose. We're not just here for ourselves. We're here to encourage one another."
Stancil points out seven people drowned in Riverside in August -- a particularly deadly month. This deeply disturbs her. Stancil's clinics focus on teaching people how to float by doing the "starfish." If you can at least float, you can survive.
An alarming new report from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention finds that 4,000 people drown in the United States each year. Among children ages 1 to 14, drowning is the second-leading cause of unintentional injury death after motor vehicle crashes.
Stancil demonstrates the starfish on a recent Saturday. Then, the kids try it.
The teacher, athlete and advocate looks like a kid herself as she takes to the water -- like a happy fish floating.

RomanceMan Proposes To Girlfriend At Her Father’s Grave Side (pix) by chuka85(op): 7:37am On Sep 29, 2018
A man whose girlfriend's dad died 2015, decided to propose to her at her father's grave side with a tear jerking letter asking for permission from the dead man to marry his daughter.

Justin and Meg met at university and their relationship developed organically. “We spent more and more time together. From the start, Justin always told me that he knew I was the one,”.

But when her dad was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in 2014, times were hard for the couple. “It was so rare that doctors have not found a cure yet. After my dad was diagnosed, Justin was always there for me whether it was a shoulder to cry on or someone to vent to. “At the time, I wasn’t the easiest person to get along with. I was confused, angry and in denial.

“After my dad passed away a year later, things were tough. My dad was my best friend and to him, I was truly his “little girl.” “Justin knew how much my dad meant to me and how difficult it is to experience the big moments in life without him.”

The romantic decided that he would involve Gino, Meg’s dad, in arguably the biggest moment of her life. Knowing that Gino’s favorite animal was a flamingo, Justin bought a lovely solar-powered decoration for his grave so the couple could take it together one weekend.

They chose the date, September 7, and Meg says she felt her dad was with her after a ‘sign’ when arriving at the cemetery. Justin told Meg to open the letter and, as she read, she realised it was written from her boyfriend to her dad asking for his blessing to marry her.

The last line said: “I hope you are smiling down on us during this moment… the moment I ask your daughter to be my wife.” Meg slowly turned and realized Justin was down on one knee. The bride-to-be says it was the happiest moment of her life.

PoliticsFather Of Nine Die Trying To Rescue Harvested Cassava From Flood In Anambra(pix) by chuka85(op): 4:03pm On Sep 28, 2018
Chief Ojike Ajanwu, a father of nine children, is the latest victim swept away by flood in Obolo village in Ogwuanicha, Anambra State.
Ajanwu was said to have drowned in his attempt to evacuate his harvested cassava from his farm, on Thursday.
His death brought the number of deaths in the flood to four, Arinze Awogu, Chairman of Ogbaru Local Government Area, told NAN on Friday.
According to Awogu, the wife of the deceased, and her eight children — including a one-month-old baby — were at the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) centre in Ogwuaniocha.

He said: “The deceased left behind a young wife, Chinasa, who hails from Ossomala and nine children; the oldest of the children is 13 years old.
“Our hearts go out to the family, and we assure them of government’s support and sincere condolences. We shall inform the governor about the incident. We are still counting the number of deaths but as at it stood at four."
The council boss noted that the flood has not shown signs of receding, as the 16 communities in the area have been submerged by flood, stating that “It’s a real emergency".

"None of the 16 communities in Ogbaru is left out; the upland is congested; the IDPs camps are overstretched, so we are now moving them to Ihiala and Onitsha," he added.
“I do not know the basis for the impression that this flood is receding. For us down here in Ogbaru, we are still at the middle of this emergency, and flood level is still rising."

He, however, thanked the Anambra State government for its support and urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to do more to assist the victims.
Meanwhile, Walsom Ibarakumo, Coordinator of Enugu office of NEMA, said the agency had handed over relief materials to Anambra SEMA for distribution to affected persons.

Items so far handed over to Anambra SEMA were food and non-food items including 600 bags of rice; 300 bags of garri; 600 bags of cement; 200 cartons of Milo; 300 bags of beans; 1,000 cartons of detergent, and 300 cartons of tinned tomato paste.

PoliticsAisha Buhari: It's True My ADC Defrauded A Lot Of People by chuka85(op): 7:45am On Sep 26, 2018
Aisha Buhari, wife of the president, has denied the reports that she ordered the arrest of her aide-de-camp, CSP Sani Baban-Inna.
The ADC had been arrested and subsequently detained over allegations of fraud amounting to N2.5 billion.
A statement by Suleiman Haruna, Director of Information to Wife of the President, issued on Tuesday, however, debunked the claim that Aisha Buhari had a hand in the arrest of the ADC.
While acknowledging that the ADC did indeed use his position to defraud people, she insisted that his employers, the Nigeria Police Force, arrested him "to investigate allegations levelled against him".
The statement read: "The attention of wife of the President, Dr. Mrs. Aisha Muhammadu Buhari has been drawn to some media publications and releases purporting illegal detention of her Aide De Camp (ADC) over allegations of fraud.
"The story, as it pertains to her ADC, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Sani Baban-Inna, has it that he has been detained on the orders of Her Excellency for dropping her name and defrauding unsuspecting officials and associates. She wishes to use this opportunity to refute such allegation and to state that she has no hand in his arrest and detention.
"CSP Sani Baban-Inna has been her ADC since 2016 and has been associated with her ever since. To the utter dismay of Her Excellency, he has used the opportunity to defraud unsuspecting associates and officials as initial investigations have shown.
"The Nigeria Police Force, his employers, arrested him to investigate the allegations levelled against him, this, being within their jurisdiction.
"She therefore wishes to use this opportunity to inform the general public that she has never sent any of her staff to collect any favours on her behalf or on behalf of her children and will never do so. She is therefore imploring anyone that has been defrauded by Mr. Baban-Inna to get across to him to retrieve whatever he took from them. Mrs. Buhari wishes to reiterate that she will not condone fraudulent behaviour by any of her staff.
"She uses this opportunity to call on all those in positions of authority to rise above intimidation by their aides and deal with such attitudes as extortion by name-dropping, especially within the Presidency. As she always emphasises, this government was voted into office based on the trust and confidence of the people."

PoliticsINEC Is A Threat To 2019 Elections– Ike Ekweremadu by chuka85(op): 7:19am On Sep 26, 2018
Following the outcome of the Osun gubernatorial election, Embattled Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has described the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as the leading threat to the 2019 general elections.
Ekweremadu, who spoke in Abuja yesterday against the background of the Saturday’s governorship poll in Osun state which the electoral body declared inconclusive, said what transpired in Osun last weekend was a clear indication that INEC would be a clear threat to the February 2019 elections.
According to Ekweremadu, the fast-declining independence of the election management body as well as vote-buying syndrome and misuse of security agencies are identified major problems ahead of the 2019 general elections.
Ekweremadu while faulting INEC for declaring the Osun governorship election as inconclusive, said the commission was “descending into the arena”.
The deputy senate President made the remarks while receiving a joint high-level delegation of the International Republican Institute (IRI), and the National Democratic Institute (NDI), Washington DC, USA, which was on a preliminary visit to Nigeria ahead of its planned Joint International Elections Observer Mission during the 2019 general elections.
He said: “Prior to 2010 electoral reforms, INEC was barely independent. It was the 2010 Electoral Act and Constitution amendments that deepened the independence of the electoral body and strengthened the electoral system as evident in the 2011 and 2015 elections.
He noted that as the country heads towards 2019 poll, there have been a lot of challenges, particularly the challenges of implementing the existing laws; and this has retarded the country, instead of making progress.
“INEC needs to exercise the independence conferred on it by previous electoral reforms to be able to stand its ground, irrespective of whoever or whichever party that is in government, whether APC or PDP. It should not tend towards the government that is in power.
“Looking at Osun State, for instance, an election took place, somebody won from the results declared at the polling units, ward collation centres, local government collation centres, and the state collation centre.
But contrary to the provisions of our electoral laws, INEC has asked the people to go back and repeat some of the elections. That is completely unacceptable.
Ekweremadu stated that under the electoral legal regime, once results are declared, you cannot go back on it adding that it is only the tribunal that can order for election to be rerun, not the electoral commission.
He also stressed the issues of vote-buying and abuse of security agencies
“One of the greatest challenges we have is the issue of vote buying, which was not in existence before now. Vote-buying emerged because the electoral reforms have tried to block a number of loopholes that have helped people to rig elections in the past.
“We are hoping to handle the issue legislatively and probably make it one of the reasons you can challenge an election at the tribunal and also put stiff penalties to ensure that this is discouraged. We are also looking at ways of addressing the issue through technology,” Ekweremadu said.
While speaking on the deployment of soldiers for election duties, he submitted that “the deployment of security personnel has been a major challenge because what we have experienced in the past few years is that they are often partisan.
“There are so many allegations of intimidation of voters and provision of cover for those buying and selling votes”, Ekweremadu added.

HealthFungi To Solve World's Plastic Crisis by chuka85(op): 6:31am On Sep 14, 2018
Scientists believe they may have found an unlikely ally in the fight against plastic pollution -- fungi.
A report published by London's Kew Gardens claims to have found a fungus that can break down plastics "in weeks rather than years."
Experts say the fungus, known as Aspergillus tubingensis, which was found in Pakistan, is capable of eroding plastics such as polyester polyurethane, which is often used in refrigerator insulation and synthetic leather.
"This is incredibly exciting because it is such a big environmental challenge. If this can be the solution, that would be great," senior scientist Ilia Leitch told a news conference Tuesday.
"We are in the early days of research but I would hope to see the benefits of fungi that can eat plastic in five to 10 years."
The report, which involved 100 scientists from across 18 countries, found that 2,189 new species of fungi were found during 2017, while an estimated 2.2 million to 3.8 million species are yet to be described.
There have been growing calls to eliminate single-use plastics across the business world, with ocean plastic waste predicted to triple by 2050.
Plastic has been found to choke marine wildlife, and has also entered the ocean food chain -- exposing marine life to toxic chemicals that can end up in the food on our plates.
Around 150 million tons of plastic are already floating in our oceans -- with an additional eight million tons entering the water each year, according to the World Economic Forum. By 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in our oceans by weight if current rates of plastic dumping continue.
As well as potentially being deployed to tackle the plastic crisis, fungi are already contributing to biotechnology, medicine and food.
Scientists believe about 350 species of fungi are eaten as food, with the market for edible mushrooms estimated to be worth around £32.5 billion (about $42.3 billion) per year.
Fungi are used in a number of cheeses, alcohol, bread and UK meat substitute Quorn as well as medicines such as penicillin and statins.
"It has been a real eye-opener drilling into the data on the fungal kingdom," Kathy Willis, director of science at Kew, said in a statement.
She added: "Their ability to play both Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde roles within their environments is unparalleled. For example the fungal kingdom includes yeast, which been used for over 9,000 years to ferment food and drink, but also includes some of the most economically damaging pathogens threatening food security and natural ecosystems."

PoliticsSecretes Behind Nigerian Amalgamation That Will Shock You by chuka85(op): 11:58pm On Sep 12, 2018
Ahead of 14th September Biafra sit at home, these Shocking Questions is left unanswered.

Who signed the 1914 Amalgamation?
Nnamdi Azikiwe was born in 1904(was 10years old when the 1914 treaty was signed)
Obafemi Awolowo was born in 1909(was 5years old when the 1914 treaty was signed)
Abubakar Tafawa Balewa was born in 1912(was 2years old before it was signed)
Ahmadu Bello was born in 1910(was 4years old before it was signed)
Michael Okpara was born in 1920(the treaty has been signed 6years before he was born)
Who and who signed these papers on 1914 and called it amalgamation of the Northern Region and Southern Region, that we shall live together as one family without War, Marginalization, Conflict of interest and crisis?
These Nationalists I mentioned above are still sucking breast at the time of this agreement.
You can't mix Red Oil and Palm kernel Oil together to get a good result.
You can't play Jazz and Etigi or skelewu in the club house at the same time and expect a good dance.
Is it that we are learning how to spell Democracy in our country or the teacher does not know how to teach?
Our problems started in 1914 because we don't know who signed it and there names and there intentions for signing it.
If they so called imperialists white signed it in the midnight while we were sleeping, the cock has crown, we have brushed our teeth, and taken our bath. Our eyes have opened to look for the amalgamation treaty and do something about it.
No Northerner can sleep with his eyes closed in the Southern part of Nigeria and no Southerner can do the same in the North. Inter marriage is a Taboo.
After 100years we are still importing toothpicks, going abroad for medical checkup, our lucrative cash crops has gone to moribund, Education for all by the year 2050, Unemployment is a baptismal name for graduates, a police officer cannot boast of his work because of vestige of his salary, our Obasanjo Space Center and Satellite Office at Abuja can not trace the location of Sambisa Forest.
And I repeat it again, who and who signed this treaty.

HealthHow Obesity May Harm Memory And Learning by chuka85(op): 7:08am On Sep 11, 2018
Obesity can affect brainpower, and a study in mice may help explain how.
In the brains of obese mice, rogue immune cells chomp nerve cell connections that are important for learning and memory, scientists report September 10 in the Journal of Neuroscience. Drugs that stop this synapse destruction may ultimately prove useful for protecting the brain against the immune cell assault.
Like people, mice that eat lots of fat quickly pack on pounds. After 12 weeks of a high-fat diet, mice weighed almost 40 percent more than mice fed standard chow. These obese mice showed signs of diminished brainpower, neuroscientist Elizabeth Gould of Princeton University and colleagues found. Obese mice were worse at escaping mazes and remembering an object’s location than mice of a normal weight.
On nerve cells, microscopic knobs called dendritic spines receive signals. Compared with normal-sized mice, obese mice had fewer dendritic spines in several parts of the mice’s hippocampi, brain structures important for learning and memory.
The dendritic spine destruction comes from immune cells called microglia, the results suggest. In obese mice, higher numbers of active microglia lurked among these sparser nerve cell connections compared with mice of normal weights. When the researchers interfered with microglia in obese mice, dendritic spines were protected and the mice’s performance on thinking tests improved.
Figuring out ways to stop microglia’s damage might one day prove to protect against obesity-related brain trouble, a concern relevant to the estimated 650 million obese adults worldwide. Obese people are also at a higher risk of dementias such as Alzheimer’s, and some researchers suspect microglia may be a culprit in those brain diseases more generally.

Christianity EtcBirthday Of Virgin Mary: Why Do Catholics Celebrate It by chuka85(op): 5:03pm On Sep 08, 2018
Caring | Intercessory | Compassionate
Happy born day to our Mother Mary, Most Gracious. We implore her to intercede on our behalf. May we live our lives following her exemplary footsteps. We ask this through CHRIST our LORD....AMENNNNNN
Happy birthday Mary, MOTHER OF THE MOST HIGH!

Today, many may no longer realize its connection with December 8 — nine months before September— when we celebrate the solemnity of Her Immaculate Conception.
Historically, however, Mary’s birthday was already being celebrated by the Church even before the dogma of Her Immaculate Conception was declared in 1854 by Pope Pius IX.
Her birthday was already a longstanding tradition in the Byzantine Church.
It was only in the 7th century that it found its way to the western church and incorporated into the Church’s liturgical calendar. The Byzantine Church celebrates September 8 as the beginning of their liturgical year.
The Catholic Church, however, places Mary’s Divine Maternity at the beginning of the fiscal year.
Both are meant to underline Her motherly solicitude over all Her children.
Normally, the Church celebrates the dies natalis or “birth into heaven” to remember the saint’s death or martyrdom.
There are only two exceptions where the saint’s birthdays are celebrated: our Lady and St. John the Baptist.
This is because their birthdays are so intimately associated with Jesus’ birth. St. John the Baptist, was born to announce the coming of our Lord, while our Lady was born to bear God in Her womb and give birth to Him.
If John the Baptizer was born to market the Good News, Mary was born to deliver the Good News!
Both were born as instruments of salvation for mankind, but only one was going to deliver the Savior to us.

This is the reason why Mary’s birthday holds a very important role for Her sons and daughters in the Church.
Her birthday was not only the beginning of Her life, but it also bore the new hope in the birth of the One who will give men their rebirth by becoming God’s children.
Although it is not contained in Scriptures, tradition holds that Mary’s parents — saints Joachim and Anne — were not fertile.
God, however, gifted them with Mary, who would become the Ark of the New Covenant.
Likewise, St. John the Baptist’s parents — Zachary and Elizabeth — seemed to share the same lot as Mary’s parents.

In their persevering prayer, however, they had a son.
John would be the last of the Prophets and would finally point to Christ as the fulfillment of all the Old Testament prophecies.
The similarities between Mary and St. John’s births, I believe, are not a coincidence.
The fact that they are miraculously born of “infertile” parents seems to underline many wonderful truths about the value and purpose of life.
First, God is the author of life. He is the beginning and the end of all life.
We must therefore respect the natural origin, development and end of human life.
We must learn to trust and abandon ourselves to God’s providence.
Always for good reasons, He may allow some couples to be fertile and others to be infertile.
Second, every person who is born into this world has a very unique mission and is a blessing for humanity.
Although it is not given to everyone to have a special mission like our Lady or St. John, we each have something unique to offer before God.
We shouldn’t wait till we retire; we can start here and now, already offering ourselves to God and others in small but constant details of love and service.
Finally, because of the examples of our Lady and St. John, we are reminded that life is worth living and are spurred to live it fruitfully.
May Mary’s maternal presence in our life fill us with the joy and optimism, treasure our life-time of grace so that one day we may return it to God as a gift that has multiplied in its fruits.

SportsMaradona To Coach A Second-division Side by chuka85(op): 10:49pm On Sep 07, 2018
Argentine legend Diego Maradona has been hired to coach Mexican second-division football club Dorados in his latest foray into management, the club announced Thursday.
Maradona’s colorful career has included stints coaching the Argentine national team and a series of clubs around the world, and he had just started a job as president of Belarus side Dinamo Brest in July.
But after parting ways with coach Francisco Ramirez Gamez, Dorados managed to convince 57-year-old Maradona to sign up for a spell in Mexico at the club known as “Big Fish”.
“Dorados of Sinaloa is pleased to announce Diego Armando Maradona is the new manager of the ‘Big Fish,'” the club said in a statement.
“Considered by many to be the best footballer of all time, Diego was known in his playing career for leading teams with guts and fight to carry them to successes that few believed possible,” it said.
The club wants Maradona to stay for the remainder of the 2018 season and all of next season, Dorados president Jorgealberto Hank Inzunza told ESPN.
“In my conversations with him, he’s been very excited to come coach here. Honestly, it was easier to convince him than I thought,” he said.
The club first confirmed rumors of Maradona’s hiring with a brief video posted online.
“Diego, welcome to the Big Fish!” said a message accompanying the video.
Dorados are currently in 13th place in their 15-team league.
– Drug cartel –
Located on Mexico’s Pacific coast, Sinaloa is home to several famous beach resorts and the drug cartel of the same name, founded by jailed kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.
Maradona himself is no stranger to drugs.
He was hit with two doping bans as a player and has publicly battled with drug addiction, alcoholism, and obesity.
His erratic behaviour in the stands at the World Cup in Russia led to him needing medical assistance after Argentina’s last-gasp win over Nigeria in Saint Petersburg.
Mexico was the scene of Maradona’s greatest triumph: leading Argentina to the 1986 World Cup title.
Two moments during that tournament neatly summed up what made him both controversial and great.
The first was his infamous “hand of God” goal in Argentina’s quarter-final against England, in which he punched the ball into the net for an ill-gotten goal.
The second, four minutes later, was a breathtaking dash in which he single-handedly beat the entire English defense to slot in what would go on to be voted “the goal of the century.”
But Maradona has sometimes had a touchy relationship with Mexico.
He infuriated Mexicans in June when he said the country did not deserve to host the 2026 World Cup, which it was awarded along with the United States and Canada.

PoliticsNigeria’s Former ICT Minister Omobola Johnson Joins International Organisation by chuka85(op): 10:25pm On Sep 07, 2018
Former ICT minister Omobola Johnson has joined the board of World Wide Web Foundation (Web Foundation for short).
The Web Foundation was established by world wide web inventor Sir Tim Berners-Lee in 2009 to advance the open web as a public good and a basic right.
This was announced in a statement by Alliance for Affordable Internet (A4AI), where Johnson had served as Honorary Chairperson for the past three years.

“As the second Honorary Chair of A4AI — a role she assumed on September 1, 2015 — Omobola has provided invaluable policy guidance and has led high-level advocacy efforts to drive down the cost of internet. In that time, both A4AI’s membership and its international profile have grown, and the Alliance has achieved important policy victories, including the adoption of the ‘1 for 2’ affordability target by Nigeria, Ghana, ECOWAS and the UN Broadband Commission,” A4A1 had said.

Johnson said on the development: “It has been a pleasure to work with A4AI since its inception and I am proud of what it has accomplished in its first five years. I look forward to continuing to advocate for its mission on the board of the Web Foundation.”

CelebritiesJohn Legend Says Kanye West Is Serious About Running For President. by chuka85(op): 10:05pm On Sep 07, 2018
Yes, Kanye West is serious about running for president, his friend John Legend said.
"He said it multiple times," Legend said in an interview on the Dan Wootton Interview podcast. "I think he's serious."
Legend said he guessed West might run as an independent candidate, although they hadn't had conversations about it. "He's never told me anything about what party," he said. He also said he thought West's political ambitions were inspired by President Donald Trump.
"He sees some aspects of himself in Trump and sees that Trump winning makes it feel like he could do it too," Legend said.
After West's public show of support for Trump in April, in which he tweeted a photo wearing a MAGA hat, Legend reached out and said he hoped West would reconsider aligning himself with the President. West tweeted out screenshots of their texts, which Legend said in the podcast interview "shocked" him.
West first said he would run for president at the 2015 VMAs. He ended his acceptance speech for the Video Vanguard Award by saying he would run in 2020, but has since pushed it back four years. In an interview with Power 92 Chicago last week, West said that if he ran, it wouldn't be until 2024, and he was confident he would win.
"If I decide to do it, it will be done," West said. "I'm not going to try."
West also said in that interview that he believes Trump has made people more aware of racism in America.
"People are like, 'Man, Trump's racist,' " he said. "If racism was a deal breaker we need to get out of America, period. He just shows you what it is. It's like the grass is cut low now."
If West were to run, he said during an interview in May with Charlamagne, he imagined his campaign would be "the Trump campaign and maybe the Bernie Sanders principles. That would be my mix."
West's would-be FLOTUS, wife Kim Kardashian West, was at the White House this week for a listening session on prison sentencing and clemency issues. She met with Trump in May to advocate for the release of Alice Marie Johnson, a nonviolent offender sentenced to life in prison. Johnson's sentence was commuted by Trump, and Kardashian West said she will continue to push for changes to the criminal justice system.
CNN asked about West in a poll conducted in May and the results suggest he'd have some work to do on his popularity. At the time, after his alignment with Trump, 23% of Americans had favorable and 53% had unfavorable opinions of him. His approval was higher among Trump supporters.

SportsU.S. OPEN: Federer Beaten: See Who Won Him by chuka85(op): 7:15am On Sep 04, 2018
Federer Stunned By 55th-ranked Millman in U.S. Open 4th Round
Roger Federer served poorly. Closed poorly, too. And now he's gone, beaten at the U.S. Open by an opponent ranked outside the top 50 for the first time in his career.

Looking slow and tired on a sweltering night in Arthur Ashe Stadium, the No. 2-seeded Federer double-faulted 10 times, failed to convert a trio of set points and lost 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (3) in the fourth round to John Millman in a match that began Monday and concluded at nearly 1 a.m. on Tuesday.

It's only the second time in Federer's past 14 appearances at the U.S. Open that he's lost before the quarterfinals. He is, after all, a five-time champion at the tournament, part of his men's-record haul of 20 Grand Slam titles.

"I have so much respect for Roger and everything he's done for the game. He's been a hero of mine, and today he was definitely not at his best," Millman said, "but, you know, I'll take it."

So much for that highly anticipated matchup between Federer and 13-time major champion Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals. Instead, it'll be the 55th-ranked Millman, an Australian who had never made it past the third round at a Slam until last week, taking on No. 6 seed Djokovic.

Millman was adamant he would not be intimidated by Federer, and perhaps was helped by having spent time practicing together a few months ago ahead of the grass-court portion of this season.

Still, this was a stunner. Not simply because Federer lost — he entered the day 28-0 at the U.S. Open, and 127-1 in all Grand Slam matches, against foes below No. 50 in the ATP rankings — but how he lost. Start with this: Federer held two set points while serving for the second at 5-4, 40-15 and did not pull through. Millman knew that was the turning point.

"I felt like a bit of a deer in headlights to begin with, to be honest with you. The feet weren't moving. Roger had me on a string. He was manipulating me around the court," Millman said. "But I got out of a tough second set and really found my feet and started to be a little bit more aggressive."

Then Federer had a set point in the third at 6-5 in the tiebreaker, but again was stymied.

In the fourth set, he went up a break at 4-2, yelling "Come on!" and getting all of those rowdy spectators in their "RF" gear on their feet, prompting the chair umpire to repeatedly plead for silence. But Federer uncharacteristically got broken right back with a sloppy game, most egregiously when he slapped what should have been an easy putaway into the net.

And then there was his serve.

In the final tiebreaker, he double-faulted twice in a row.

The first obvious signs of trouble for Federer came far earlier, in the second game of the second set. He started that 15-minute struggle by missing 18 of his initial 20 first serves. While he eventually held there, he needed to save seven break points along the way. It was clear the 37-year-old Federer was not at his best.

Maybe the 75 percent humidity played a role. Millman's big rips on groundstrokes didn't help matters. As the unforced errors mounted — Federer would finish with 77, nearly three times as many as Millman's 28 — Federer's wife, Mirka, couldn't bear to look, placing her forehead on her hands in the guest box in the stands.

Federer hung his head at a changeover, a little black fan pointed right at his face, but nothing seemed to make him feel like himself.

Hours before, Djokovic left the court for a medical timeout — the second time during the tournament he's sought help from a doctor because of harsh weather — during what would become an otherwise straightforward 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 victory over 68th-ranked Joao Sousa of Portugal.

"I'm not 21 anymore. That was 10 years ago. I still don't feel old. But at the same time, there is a little biological clock that is not really working in your favor," Djokovic told the crowd afterward. "Sometimes, you just have to survive."

He reached the quarterfinals for an 11th consecutive appearance in New York as he bids for a third U.S. Open championship and 14th Grand Slam trophy.

The other quarterfinal on the bottom half of the draw will be a rematch of the 2014 U.S. Open final: No. 7 Marin Cilic against No. 21 Kei Nishikori.

Cilic, who beat Nishikori four years ago for his only major title, was a 7-6 (6), 6-2, 6-4 winner against No. 10 David Goffin, while Nishikori advanced by defeating Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3, 6-2, 7-5.

CelebritiesWhat Messi Said About Cristiano Ronaldo by chuka85(op): 6:46am On Sep 04, 2018
Barcelona star Lionel Messi said the Real Madrid become a weaker team after Cristiano Ronaldo's departure to Juventus.

Real Madrid lost their UEFA Super Cup against city rivals Atletico Madrid, but have won three games in a row to start their La Liga campaign.

"Real Madrid are one of the best teams in the world with a great squad (but) it's evident that the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo makes them less good and makes Juventus (one of the) clear favorites to win the Champions League," Messi told Catalunya Radio in a show broadcast on Monday.

"It surprised me. I didn't imagine him leaving Madrid or joining Juventus. There were a lot of teams that wanted him. It surprised me but he went to a very good team."

In early August Messi gave a speech in which he said Barca wanted to win the Champions League this year after the disappointment of being knocked out by AS Roma in the quarter-finals last season. The No.10 reaffirmed his desire to win the trophy Barcelona last lifted in 2015.

"It's time. We have had three years in a row being knocked out of the Champions League and are hurt further still from last season’s result in Rome," added Messi.

"We have a spectacular squad and we can fight for it. We lost chances to win it in the (Pep) Guardiola era against Inter (Milan) and Chelsea. We were better than them and we could not get to the final because of small details."

PoliticsChina To Carry Out Eight Major Initiatives With African Countries by chuka85(op): 5:21am On Sep 04, 2018
China will carry out eight major initiatives with African countries in the coming three years, guided by a closer China-Africa community of shared destiny in the new era, said Chinese President Xi Jinping in a keynote speech on Monday.

President Xi highlighted the country's action plan on promoting closer cooperation with African countries in the fields of industry, investment, trade, infrastructure, health, culture, environmental protection and security, in his speech at the opening ceremony of the opening ceremony of the 2018 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) held in Beijing.

China will establish the China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo in China. The country fully supports the goal of basically achieving food security before 2030 as proposed by African countries, and will provide 1 billion yuan (146.3 million US dollars) in emergency humanitarian aid to disaster-affected African countries.

China will further promote infrastructure construction in Africa, enhancing cooperation in the fields of energy, transportation and telecommunications.

China will implement 50 projects on trade facilitation with African countries and establish 50 aid projects on green development and environmental protection.

In addition, China proposed actions to support Africa's social development, including providing social and vocational training for African youth, establishing China-Africa innovation cooperation centers and enhancing mutual exchange projects. China will also upgrade 50 medical and healthcare assistance projects in Africa.

Meanwhile, China plans to establish a China-Africa fund on peace and security cooperation as a way of jointly carrying out peacekeeping and maintaining stability.

In order to promote the smooth implementation of the eight initiatives, China will provide 60 billion US dollars' worth of financial support to Africa through government aid, financing and investment by financial institutions and enterprises.

The 60 billion US dollars will include 15 billion US dollars' worth of aid, interest-free loans and concessional loans, a credit line worth 20 billion US dollars, a 10-billion-US dollar special fund for China-Africa development, and a 5-billion-US dollar special fund for imports from Africa. Chinese companies will be encouraged to invest no less than 10 billion US dollars in Africa in the next three years.

Meanwhile, Africa's least developed countries, heavily indebted countries, landlocked developing countries and small island developing countries with diplomatic relations with China will be exempted from outstanding intergovernmental interest-free loan debts from the end of 2018.

SportsSee Why Messi Was Dropped From The List Nominated For FIFA Best Player Award by chuka85(op): 4:42am On Sep 04, 2018
Argentina and Barcelona forward Lionel Messi was left off the shortlist for FIFA's Player of the Year award for the first time in 12 years on Monday while Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric and Mohamed Salah were named as the three finalists.

Although Messi won the Spanish league title with Barca last season, the 31-year-old had an unhappy World Cup, missing a penalty against Iceland and scoring only once in four games as they were knocked out in the last 16.

Messi, who last failed to make the final three nominees in 2006, has won the award, in its various guises, five times and finished runner-up on another six occasions.

Ronaldo helped Real Madrid claim a third consecutive Champions League crown before securing a transfer to Juventus.

Midfielder Modric, also part of Madrid's Champions League triumph, finished as a runner-up with Croatia at the World Cup, winning the best player award at the tournament in Russia.

Egyptian forward Salah scored 44 goals for Liverpool last season, helping the English club reach the Champions League final where they were beaten by Real.

Hampered by injury, he made little impact at the World Cup as his country went out in the group stage.

Brazil's Kaka, in 2007, was the last player other than Ronaldo or Messi to win the award.

France's World Cup-winning captain Hugo Lloris is in contention for the goalkeeper of the year award, alongside Golden Glove winner Thibaut Courtois of Belgium and Denmark's Kasper Schmeichel.

Former Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane, France coach Didier Deschamps and Croatia's Zlatko Dalic were on the shortlist for the coach of the year award.

The women's player of the year award is between Olympique Lyonnais duo Ada Hegerberg and Dzsenifer Marozsan, who had an unbeaten league season and lifted the Women's Champions League, and Brazil's triumphant Copa America Femenina captain Marta.

The awards ceremony will take place in London on September 24.

PoliticsFlames Rip Through #liverpool's Famous Littlewoods Pools Building by chuka85(op): 7:08am On Sep 03, 2018
A huge blaze ripped through the iconic Littlewoods Pools Building in Liverpool this evening.

Flames could be seen for miles as thick smoke from the blaze at the old Art Deco building billowed across the city.

Nine fire engines surrounded the art deco structure with a high volume pump and firefighters entered using breathing apparatus.

Residents, who reported hearing loud bangs and crackling from the scene, spoke of their "devastation", with one person saying: "My favourite building, it's so sad."

The Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said it was first called to the fire at 7:52pm and firefighters were on the scene within four minutes.

An area of approximately 200mx100m was engulfed with flames from the first floor of the building upwards, according to a fire service spokesman.

By 10pm, almost half of the building was ablaze.

PoliticsWhat Airport Security Check Tray Can Cause To Your Health by chuka85(op): 6:32am On Sep 03, 2018
Airport security check trays risks to health, Finnish study.

Passengers should wash their hands quickly after going through the airport security checks. This is one of the recommendations based on a study by the supreme Finnish public health body, the Agency for Health and Wellbeing, into the conditions at the Helsinki international airport.

The investigation released on the weekend revealed that the plastic trays used for travelers to put gadgets and clothing in through the x-ray checking have a huge bacteria and virus load.

The toilets meanwhile got a clean bill. Samples from the upper covers of toilets, the flushing handle, and the door handle gave no indications of viruses. The fact that janitors pop into toilets regularly can be an explanation.

The highest risks were found in a children's play corner. A plastic dog pet featured two contagious viruses. Experts of the Health and Wellbeing Agency concluded that the particular dog may have made hundreds of kids sick.

The buttons of the card payment terminals in the airport pharmacy also offered a good collection of the ailments the customers of the pharmacy appear to have had.

The security check trays carried adeno, influenza A, rhino and corona OC43. The pet dog featured at least adeno and rhino.

The recommendation for travelers to wash hands quickly after the security check is not that easy to follow, at least in Helsinki. There are wash basins in toilets, but their availability is limited compared to the number of travelers. Many customers actually tend to go directly from the security checks to enjoy shopping and cafeteria.

Commenting on the results, the weekend business magazine Talouselama noted that avoiding touching the trays or boxes in the security checks would "require major acrobatics".

There was no immediate comment from the airport authority as to whether the wearing of thin gloves all through the screening process could be allowed. The security attendants meanwhile have protective gloves.
