Let me englighten you lets say the government wants to build a capital intensive project of 1b$ like a light rail which the construction would take probably 4 years.Dont you think it would be at a disservice to the nation if almost half of the budget is used for this purpose while leaving some more pressing aspects of development like education and co. So borrowing would actually give the government another source of capital which would be used for the project while the budget can be allocated for other things

President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, has revealed that the 9th Senate will approve President Muhammadu Buhari’s $29.9 billion loan request.

This is despite Lawan’s earlier caution to the Executive to minimise its planned borrowing.

The Senate President stated this in Abuja during a media parley.

He, however, pointed out that the various standing committees will carry out serious oversight functions and ensure that the money is not misappropriated by the various Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

Recall that in November 2016, then Senate President, Bukola Saraki turned down the same loan request from President Buhari.

According to Lawan, “The question of whether we will pass the loan request of the Executive arm of Government, yes, we will pass it.

“If we don’t have money and you have projects to build them, how will you provide infrastructure that you need?

“But one thing is that, we are going to be critical that every cent that is borrowed is tied to a project.

“These are projects that will have spillover effects on the economy and we will undertake our oversight so well to ensure that such funds are properly, prudently, economically and transparently are applied on those projects.”

Prof. Itse Sagay (SAN), Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC) on Wednesday said PUNCH newspaper has greatly embarrassed over its resolve to henceforth address President Muhammadu Buhari as a retired Major-General.

Speaking with Daily Independent, he said the newspaper has
finally, come out of hiding having pretended all this while as a secret mole of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In a titled “Buhari’s lawlessness: Our Stand”, PUNCH had stated that it will “henceforth prefix Buhari’s name with his rank as a military dictator in the 80s ‘Major General’ and refer to his administration as a regime until they purge themselves of their insufferable contempt for the rule of law.
The newspaper made the decision while making reference to DSS’ non-compliance to court orders on trial of Omoyele Sowore, publisher of SaharaReporters; invasion of courtroom and trial of Shiites’ leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky amongst others.

Speaking with our correspondent, Sagay said by its action, PUNCH has shown utter disrespect to not only President Muhammadu Buhari but the entire presidency and the sovereignty of Nigerians.

“That is disrespect and discourtesy promoted to the highest level. As far as I am concerned, PUNCH has come out of hiding. It has been operating as a mole against this government for a long time. But now, it has finally come out in its true colour”.

To say that a President that was elected by this country does not deserve to be addressed as President because you disagree with something; for me, that is the limit of disrespect not just to the President but the presidency and sovereignty of this country”.

“I think the PUNCH people have exposed themselves and they might as well declare themselves as a party organ of the PDP and stop pretending to have any objective attitude to public affairs. It is a shame and a great embarrassment to any decent-thinking Nigerian” he said.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President, Media and Publicity, Mr Garba Shehu, has said the social media can’t be left to operate without control.

A State House statement on Monday said Shehu spoke at the Kawararafa Media Award in Abuja on Sunday night.

He said, “The entire Kasuwan Magani saga that resulted in the death of more than 50 people was because someone posted misleading information on WhatsApp that went viral.


“All countries in the world are trying to make laws to check the excesses. Many countries are trying to control the situation. The Europeans have placed a new law that holds the companies responsible.

“In United Kingdom, the parliament has received a report on social media. There is youth addiction to it, just like cigarettes. Without any form of control, it has done harm to women, ethnic minorities, individuals, institutions and countries,’’ the statement by the Deputy Director, Information, Mr Atta Essa, quoted Shehu as saying.


He said that to demonstrate that the government was not against free speech, the Minister of Information and Culture, Mr Lai Mohammed, had repeatedly called for a meeting of stakeholders to agree on modalities for regulating the social media.

“The Federal Government is saying that stakeholders should come together and agree on regulation. We know that no matter how bad the situation is, it favours someone.

“Some have argued that our Constitution already has laws on libel, but the laws of the 60s never anticipated social media.


“No government has the right to muzzle freedom of speech. We don’t support the taking of lives as punishment. People insult others and share false information on social media. I hope that hate speech will be tackled so that Nigeria will be a sane place to live in,’’ he added.

He said the global trend required that a journalist should undergo training and licensing before reporting, adding that in the case of the social media, “with a phone, a tablet or laptop, anyone can reach millions, sometimes for good and other times with ulterior motives.’’
