Travel / Re: UK Or Sweden by Cityboyy: 11:50am On Apr 12, 2021
Go to the Uk pls. You’ll integrate better in the Uk and can get a student job without language restrictions. The UK is also more fun and international student friendly. Sweden is boooring. The people are not so friendly and you’re more likely to face “in-your-face” racism, compared to Uk.
The only reason you’d want to consider Sweden is because it is under Schengen and you can travel to other Schengen countries without visa. But think about your future and everyday life. Don’t underestimate the struggle of learning a new language and being expected to speak like a native during your job search.

Ha! God works in mysterious ways.

They invited her for an “internship”. The purpose of internship is to gain experience. Haven’t you heard of people doing internships in Facebook and Google or Big companies? Dumb Nigerians. Always want to show themselves. Just congratulate her and go away

2/2 My partner and I started discussing on what I would study. We had prior discussions about my change of career, but no final decisions were made.

I approached Ty, after our conversations, I decided on Data Science.

I made my research and decided on DePaul University.

I was still working as a food delivery driver. I did it almost every day.

I would study from 8/9am to 2/3pm and then drive from 5pm to 1am on most days.

I would take my books in my car, whenever the orders were delaying from coming in from the delivery companies, I would read my book in my car.

Multiple times I would break down and cry bitterly, I would ask God why I had to suffer so much. I am a freaking graduate, a Second-class upper graduate, yet here I am delivering food to people in America.

I could easily apply for another job, but none of those would pay me the money I made from doing deliveries or give me the flexibility the job offered.

Most of the people I did deliveries with upgraded their cars, but I couldn't cause all my money went to tuition and bills. I hated that car, but wetin man go do?

My back and shoulders started hurting more than it used to (A prior domestic accident is responsible for the initial pain) due to long driving hours. My doctor said I had to slow down both on driving and the long hours I spent studying.

I did not have a life, if I wasn't studying, I was doing deliveries. To make sure I wasn't wasting money on unnecessary things, I learnt to make my own hair as your girl wanted to still slay.

See eh, not everyone will understand your journey and that’s fine. Certain ex friends would make silly jokes about how I was being too frugal. I got tired of explaining that I was sponsoring myself through school(not like they didn't know).

As part of my master’s completion requirement, I needed to do an analytical internship, take a class or complete a project.

I chose to do an internship. I dm-ed Ty to tell her all about it.I didn't think I was ready because I had only taken a few classes at the time. Ty said bullshit! Apply baby girl.

I started applying, omo rejection left, right and center. I finally got one, but it wasn't an analytical internship, it was a Machine learning internship.

I took it to harness my skills and went right back to searching for an analytical internship.

Facebook approached me for an internship, I was thrilled, I ran to Ty and told her. I think she was even more thrilled than I was. I have never met anyone who gets so happy at someone's success like Ty.

She helped prep me for the interview, unfortunately I didn't get it.

I reconnected with the younger sister of my childhood friend, she read about my Machine learning internship and reached out to me. We got talking and she promised to help me get a job.

Ha Amaka, a whole job, please na internship I want.

I had become very intentional about the friends I keep at this time, if you aren’t in tech or inspirational, I wasn't interested

Amaka helped me revamp my resume and posted it on different job sites. She also sent my resume to all the recruiters she had previously worked with. The interview calls started coming in, with a few rejections of cause.lol.

I got my first Data analyst job; I was so emotional. I did not know that was just the beginning.

A couple more interviews and I landed a Data Analytical Internship at a fortune 500 company and a Data management consultant role at a fortune 100 company.

All of this was happening at the same time, I was so overwhelmed. I even had to reschedule the Google interview I had.

I ran between Amaka, Ty and my partner. I didn't know which to accept or reject.

While still on that, my school sent me a nomination to join the Upsilon Pi Epsilon Honor society.

My life has changed so much in just 3 days. My younger sister called me a few days ago to congratulate me and I started crying.

I still cry from time to time because it still feels like a dream.

I have to get used to this, used to living the life I worked so hard for, living the life I dreamt of!

Your dreams are valid!

Travel / Nigerian Woman Living In US, Shares Her Success Story by Cityboyy: 1:33pm On Apr 11, 2021
1/2 I promised to share my journey once I get the chance, i broke it down into two different posts.

I have done all sorts of jobs to pay my bills and tuition. To give you context, my tuition is roughly $3500 for a 4-credit course and I need at least 52 credits to graduate.

I even took 2 different classes separate from the 52 required credits because of my non-Computer Science background.

My first job was at a factory, I worked so freaking hard . I worked between 60-70 hours weekly @ $10/hr. As menial and stressful as that job was, I was so happy to have it.

I was saving for my tuition; I had not even started applying to schools at the time.

I worked there for about 3 months before I met someone who told me of a hotel cleaning job that paid $13/hr. Omo! I felt I had hammered, 3 whole extra dollars per hour. I immediately applied for the hotel job and quit the factory one.

I came back from work one day and the people (biologically related people) I lived with refused to open the door for me. I was paying rent and utility bills at this place, but they felt they could throw me out to teach me a lesson because we had a misunderstanding (gist for another day).
I called aunties I was close to so they would help me talk to them to let me take a few things but they refused to let me into the house.

I contemplated calling the police but changed my mind, I didn't want to get anyone into unnecessary trouble.

I sat outside that house till midnight, when it became obvious they would not let me in, I left.

A friend from my old factory job housed me for the night, her house was 1hour drive away from Chicago and 2 hours away by bus. The next morning, I was on the bus for 2 hours to my hotel job.

I did it for 3 days and got tired, I knew it wasn't sustainable. I talked to a friend from my hotel job (She lives in Chicago) and she agreed to house me till I found a house.

I aggressively started looking for a house as I didn't want to inconvenience my host. I was freaking scared as living by myself meant more bills, it meant that I wouldn't save as much for my masters. But what other choice is there, I resolved to work extra hours if need be.

I got a house within a week, signed the lease, and moved in. I didn't even care what the house looked like, I had roof over my head, so I was happy.

That hotel cleaning job bleeped up my body, my body didn't agree with all that bending, cleaning, and dusting. Yet I did the job diligently, so much that my manager offered to increase my pay to $15 when I wanted to quit.

I turned down the offered because my body couldn't take it any longer, plus I heard from someone that doing Door Dash(food delivery) paid much more.

I had resolved to try Door Dash, but I didn't have a car nor a driving license. I took some of the money I had saved for my tuition to buy a small old car. You should have seen me that day, I was so happy and proud of my car.

A friend taught me how to drive and in less than a month, I applied for my driving license and got it on my first attempt.

I decided to test run Door Dash to ensure it paid as much as I had heard. I was still working at the hotel then, after my 8-5 shift, I would do food delivery from 5/6-9. I did it for like a month and it indeed paid better than my cleaning job.

I quit the hotel cleaning job and focused on the food delivery. I started researching about other food delivery companies, I wanted to know if they paid more. I discovered Uber and Grubhub. I signed up for them and started alternating between the three different companies.

At this point , I had saved enough to start school, so I went back to all of Omotoyosi Ogunbanwo 's Data science posts I had saved.

That man wrote over 90 pages of information for free. What else do you want him to do for you? Did you pay for his ticket to Germany? Because he chose his mental health over anything else, you are cursing him. Be grateful for the information he gave you and move on. He does not owe you anything. Jesus Christ!

You don't have to modify your comment, you've already muddied the water, so no need. And all this says a lot about you and the kind of person you are. Next time just see my comment, mind your business and pass.

Modify what? How can I modify a comment you already quoted. You came here accusing the moderator of banning you without a just reason and acting like a victim. When you were indeed a troublemaker and were only interested in starting a fight here, even when people ignored you. You made rude comments which were deleted. Now you want to tell lies and play the victim like many others. Have a good day.

Could you believe Daniel Houston called me "a toxic person" just for disagreeing with him? You can verify it by checking previous pages. So dude just got what he bargained for and that he reacted very immaturely later was beyond annoying . Not to mention how the mod embarrassingly sided with the and also brutally clamped down hard on people who disagree with op, all in an effort to appease DJ Houston. Shameful

Ok now sweetie, we all saw what you did on this thread. You called his thread the most toxic and boring thread you ever read on NL. You accused him of telling fake stories. You attacked his personality and he never replied to you. Other people called you out. The moderator had to remove your comments because you were extremely rude on purpose. I never saw where the op replied to you. He only told someone not to give you attention and protect their energy. Let’s not do this. The proof is still up there! Honesty!

@Justwise I have nothing against you and I commend the job you do here. But I believe in due process. Everybody should have a chance to a defense. You removed the op’s final message but you left the comments of other people who are expressing their disappointment in him. If someone comes to this thread and just reads the last few comments, they’d think he was indeed a terrible person. You did not give him a chance to say what he wanted to say and clear his name before he left. Was he always right? No. But let us stick to transparency and not prejudice.

I don't want to stress this over but since you quoted me, I'll respond. Check the first three pages, a Nlder - Ugorexi (not too sure it's correct) - explained his own side of racism as a resident in Germany but OP called him an ignorant African. Just like that!

I read it and I’ve followed this thread. Op did not call Ugoerico an ignorant African. Quote the exact comment. The only time he responded to the guy was when the guy came here to brag about his new car and traveling to Cologne for work etc and despise everybody. Go and read it again.

You can dislike Justwise for whatever reason but he's right when he agrees that people have the right to disagree with OP. Initially, he called someone an "ignorant African" because the person slightly disagreed with him regarding racism in Germany even though the person resides there. The belief that everyone will agree with you on a free-to-comment thread doesn't exist. As much as he produced great content, I never liked his attitude towards people who disagreed with him in a logical and coherent approach. Those who insulted or mocked him using Hitler-like posts should be condemned but the belief that only his comments should be revered doesn't hold. At best, move to the diary section.

Unless you are one of those people who believe in free speech, diversity and liberty yet against views different from yours.

The person lives in the US and said he has only visited Germany. He was also not disagreeing about racism in Germany. He was forcing us to believe that the US is not racist and Germany is more racist than US. He also went on a black lives matter rant. You could see that Justwise removed so many of the guy’s comments because he was being rude. Some of you need to be honest. You only choose what you want to see because of how you feel. I did not see you say anything about the people attacking the op including the one that called him Hitler?

The irony of this whole thing is that many of the people criticizing the op, will still come back to read this thread from time to time and take the information they need from it. But now they’ve turned their backs against him. Daniel hoston wherever you are God will continue to bless you. Just know that some of us are eternally thankful for the work you put into this thread for FREE. Anybody hoping to start a thread should learn from this. People will use you to get what they want and throw you away when you are no longer useful to them. Don’t let the praises fool you.

I have learnt enough Thai to get by on a day to day basis. People here love when you take the effort to learn their language, it makes life a lot easier for you. I would say I'm about a year away from fluency.

Biggest cultural shock will be the ladyboy phenomenon (basically transexuals), coming from Nigeria that was a complete shock to me that there were a lot of them around here. But then again they are accepted by the society and everyone just try to get along without judging each other.

The standard of living is pretty decent, here you don't have to go to the extreme to live comfortably coupled with a low cost of living.
I usually suggest if you are going to live comfortably you will need to rent a room in a condominium as opposed to regular apartments( trust me this is the safest choice for Nigerians as it's offers privacy and security). An average condominium will cost up to 8500 baht monthly (around 90,000 naira) included with internet (unlimited) and electricity bills. If you are a student you have the option of living on campus at a very low cost but you will probably have to share space with a roommate.

Feeding for a single man who can cook well and occasionally eat outside shouldn't be more than 25,000 naira monthly... Infact food here is the cheapest I have seen in the world.
Things like transportation are relatively cheap if you know how to navigate around town with the sky train, underground train, meter taxis, and buses.

The major job opportunity as a Nigerian will be teaching jobs. Many Nigerians are into buying of different goods at a cheaper price in Thailand and selling it anywhere in the world. If you have professional experience, you might be lucky to be employed by multinational companies stationed in Thailand. And lest I forget, athletes are highly respected here, so if you are good at any sport chances are you are two times better than any local option available in the sport.

Hmm interesting. I saw something about the lady boys on Instagram. Thailand seems to be popular for that

If we can just read through with open mind and not jump on the bandwagon of “he cannot take different opinion because people disagree with him” we will see that there is more to it. Why did Justwise have to hide many comments if they were just different opinions? Whether we like it or not there was a personal propaganda to chase the OP away. Some even opened a fake account just to attack the op. How can you call it disagreement when they are not offering any information, except to attack him? Same thing has happened on other travel threads. People hide behind different opinion to derail the thread and cause havoc until the op is frustrated. You can disagree without making it hateful. Why did someone have to call him Hitler? I’m just pained because I really enjoyed this thread as a ghost reader. Sigh
