This should normally be bad news as a lower dollar to naira exchange rate encourages massive importation thus encouraging consumerism.

But since we want all the borders opened and 1 dollar to one naira; let's embrace importation of everything from pencil to toothpick because no manufacturing sector can compete locally and internationally.

I wish the dollar stays high but local production be ramped up to meet national demand and some products with which we have high comparative advantage (ability to massively supply) should be banned.

I came to Uyo sometimes in May, 2017(3/5/2017) all the way from Abuja to buy oil from you. I bought 37 Kegs of Palm oil and paid you for that.
I sent you N237,600 via your account for more kegs of Palm oil. I never got the Palm oil or the money back even when I told you I needed to use the money to pay my rent. Again my Dad passed away in November 2017 and buried 15th December again, you promised and never gave me even if it were part of it to to use in burial preparation of my late Father as the first born.
In January, 2018 we spoke once again and you lamented crying about your predicaments, I reminded you that I took loan to go into this business as a second income stream for my family and that I will be paying the loan for a period of three years. Also that the palm oil I stored I am yet to find buyer for it. To this you responded that there is company is into soap making that you could help sell it for me, as you usually sold to them. You also said that they do not default in paying 2 week max, I will be paid. I told you the minimum I will sell my Palm oil for was N12,000 (which is still at a loss).
You told me not to discuss with them when they come as they are just logistic persons and don’t know about the business. Fortunately they came dressed in their uniform (Heal Mass Agrotech). They left with 34 kegs of palm oil (11/1/2018).
Two weeks later I called you, you said you were in a meeting seeking new opportunity and that you will call me later but you never did. You text me to send you the breakdown of you liability to me, which I did as thus;
N237,600 + N408,000 + N34000 = N679,600 (N34000, being the cost for 34 kegs as bought via you in Uyo).
I have confirmed from the Heal Mass Agrotech, that you have being fully paid plus interest, I don’t mind that you made interest on this deal. I just want my money.

In all spheres of our economy, we have fraudulent people. In 2015, I sold a car I bought 1.85 million for just 250k due to greed and fraudulent activities of my mechanic in Lagos. I paid money to a welder to work for me and he absconded with my money till date. I lost huge amount paid for land due to greed and fraudulent acts of a well known individuals. A pastor ran away with iPad I sold to him after send fake alert for over 4 years. I can go on relating but I will stop here. In all these narrations, the perpetrators are from the same ethnic group, I will never come to social media to condemn everyone from the ethnic group because you still have good people there. Let us join hand to condemn evil.

Good you discover this thread. Don't be overwhelmed by profits being booked by individuals at the moment. Use this time to educate yourself on the rudiments of stock trade/investment. After that, decide whether to be a trader or investors. Mind you US stock business is not get reach quick scheme. You can easily make money and easily lose money. Andrew Ogbeche, a former worker of the slain former Commissioner for Youths and Sports in Edo State, Mr Egbe Ediagbonya, has owned up on the role he played in the kidnap of his boss. Ogbeche, who worked as a labourer on Ediagbonya’s palm tree farm at Utese village, Okada area of the state, explained that he got N100,000 out of the N1m ransom paid for the victim’s release.

The ex-commissioner was reportedly kidnapped on May 16 and his decomposing body found 19 days later at a bush close to his farm. Following his murder, men of the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team launched a manhunt for the perpetrators, leading to Ogbeche’s arrest early July. City Round learnt Ogbeche conspired with one Paul and other accomplices at large to perpetrate the crime.

Police investigation revealed that the kidnappers had on May 3, sent a threat message to the deceased, announcing their intention to abduct him and daring him to involve security agencies. They made good their threat 13 days after when they ambushed him on his farm and demanded a ransom. After collecting N1m, they were said to have informed his family to pick up his corpse at a location.

“The kidnappers used the deceased’s mobile to demand a ransom and collected N1m. They later sent a text message to the family, asking them to pick his corpse somewhere. It took the family few days to locate the corpse in the bush.

“Through intelligence-led investigation, Andrew Ogbeche was arrested. He is the deceased’s former worker on his palm tree farm at Utese. The phone he used in sending threat messages to the deceased was recovered from him. Investigation is ongoing to arrest other suspects involved in the kidnapping and murder,” a police source said.

35 year old Ogbeche, who hails from Bewarre village in Ogoja Local Government Area of Cross River State, told City Round during the week that he was aware of his ex-boss’ kidnap but did not know about his murder. He stated that after the news of Ediagbonya’s death broke in the community, he tried to reach Paul on the phone to no avail.

Andrew said, “Since I graduated from the university, I have been having financial constraints. I used to work with the commissioner as a labourer on his palm tree farm and he paid me N10,000 per month. I used to clear the bush and help to pluck palm fruits. I worked with him for 2 months but he paid me only for one month. He promised to pay me later. While I was working for him, I had no plan to kidnap him. It was my friend, Paul, who visited me on the farm that brought the idea of kidnapping him.

“He told me my boss had a lot of money. I warned him not to try it. He kept visiting and threatened to kill me if I expose his secret. While he was visiting me on the farm, Paul had told my boss that he wanted to work with him. He became close to him and he trusted him.”

Ogbeche, who claimed to be the only child of his mother, said he consented to the crime for fear of throwing his mum into mourning. He added, “The day they kidnapped the man, Paul told me and I was scared. He gave me N100,000 but that time, I never knew they had killed him. It was later I saw one of my friends who told me that my boss is dead. I was devastated. I felt bad and I regret collecting the money.”

Really disturbing. No one is safe even from workers and domestic staff. No wonder some people are seriously considering emigration and acquisition of second passport. Will things change for the good? I seriously doubt. I regretted not migration at young age when my friends and school mates were jetting out. This is worst than stealing by employees you people earlier discussed.

Some people here raised the issue high exchange rate in favor of Dollar as the parallel/black market has continued to edge towards 500/$1. This should be great source of concern to all, if no radical economic measures are put in place, the fate of Naira will be same as some other currencies like Zimbabwe dollar, Lebanese lira, Venezuela Bolivar and other failed currencies. Naira going toward 1000/$1 means more and more people will lose hope in Naira as means of Exchange, leading to adoption of dollarization.

CBN as a matter of urgency needs to strengthen naira by curbing the activities of currency speculators and black market operators. Restoration of people confidence on naira will stop panic buying of dollars for the preservation of their savings/investment.
