Kanu is the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and had been touring states to gain more support. In one of such tours, he met the policemen at a checkpoint who excitedly posed for photographs with him.

Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has declared that the force will not take it lightly with two of its officers who recently took photographs with Nnamdi Kanu.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that while reacting to the photographs that went viral days later, IGP Idris, who was in Lagos, said he was not happy with what happened that day. He also said the police would be tough in handling the issue as it was very bad for professional policemen to act the way the officers did on seeing Kanu.

Idris, who described Kanu as one troubling the unity of Nigeria, said the action of the policemen that day proved double loyalty He said the police force was being sanitized to meet the aspirations of the people.

He revealed that the police would create new 88 area commands to meet the level of insecurity in the country.

Celebrities / Don't Seal Your joystick Shut With A Jiftip Sticker During Sex, It's Risky. by Classicjadon(m): 2:27pm On Aug 03, 2017

A new product created in a "desperate attempt to avoid using condoms" involves men using a sticker to seal their urethras shut during sex.

The product, named "Jiftip", is a sticker that covers the urethra during sex, and is touted as a way to “Feel your partner, Feel Freedom, Feel Safe.”

Except it's not exactly safe.

While Jiftip may sound like a dream come true for those who don't like the way condoms feel during sex, many health professionals warn there is no evidence the product is effective in preventing STDs or pregnancy.

Jamin Brahmbhatt, a physician with Orlando Health, said users who visit Jiftip's website also have to dig to find the company's disclaimer that the product is "not intended or approved to prevent pregnancy or STI's." Whoops.

And the product's disclaimer gets even more alarming in the frequently asked question section:

"BUT WHAT ABOUT HERPES, HPV?" the company asks. "Jiftip only protects pleasure and convenience, not STI's or pregnancy." Bottom line: You're on your own, friends.

Brahmbhatt notes that the entire marketing campaign around the product is alarming.

“Consumers often get caught up in the hype and forget risk,” Brahmbhatt said. “Even in the product’s disclaimer, it says it will not prevent pregnancy or STDs, which is the only reason people wear condoms in the first place.”

The website notes that Jiftip, which comes in a three pack for $6, should only be used with the pull-out method, and that it's not recommended to ejaculate with the patch on during sex.

Brahmbhatt notes that those who do leave the patch on when they ejaculate may experience pain or irritation from the patch blocking the urethra while the man has "natural spasms that evacuate all the fluid." It's also possible that the adhesive could be an irritant for some with sensitive skin.

He said for those who are worried about STDs or pregnancy, the bottom line is condoms are the safest option.

"Condoms are tried and tested," he said. "They are an effective form of birth control and control against STDs. Condoms are not the enemy."

Celebrities / Anambra State Students Protest And Block Roads Over Police Money Extortion by Classicjadon(m): 1:35pm On Aug 03, 2017

Some 1000 students of the Nwafor Orizu College of Education Nsugbe, Anambra State, yesterday barricaded both lanes of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway over alleged extortion, intimidation and harassment by officials and agents of the state government.

The protesting students under the auspices of Joint Campus Committee (JCC), carried placards with various inscriptions, ‘Voice of student must be heard,’ ‘Students say no to intimidation,’ ‘Uju Akudo Must Go,’ ‘Commissioner for Transport Encouraging Touts,’ among others.

The students chanted solidarity songs, disrupted vehicular movement and businesses for several hours, insisting they would not vacate the road unless they were addressed by the state governor.

Daily trust learnt that it took a re-enforcement team led by Superintendent Willie Odumu from Police Headquarters to disperse the protesters after an unsuccessful attempt by a team led by Anthony Akpeyi, DPO of B-Division.

Speaking to newsmen, Chairman of JCC in Anambra, Betty Okoye, said the students could no longer condone the situation where agents who claimed to be working for government inflicted hardship on students. Okoye said the alleged agents of government frustrated the bus station designated for students’ shuttle park in Onitsha from functioning.

He said the students paid between N50 and N70 using the designated park but were being made to pay between N150 and N200 by illegal agents, and called on Governor Willie Obiano to stop the illegal agents from conniving with officials of government to cause hardship for students and give him bad image.

Addressing the protesters, the special adviser to the State governor on political matters, Chinedu Obidigwe, thanked them for conducting themselves peacefully and assured them that their request would reach the governor.

Education / The Engineers This Century by Classicjadon(m): 6:44am On Aug 01, 2017

We must also realise that we only have this small planet, Earth, with rapidly burgeoning population putting much pressure on limited non-renewable resources, and thus putting into jeopardy the welfare of future generations.

The world is not as simple as it once was. Global economic order, the Internet, they are all realties of the 21st Century. We are all interdependent, hence we need to work together collaboratively while also competing to be our best. Future engineers will need to work alongside people from around the world, in a variety of capacities. In order to do so, they must be well rounded; they must understand how to operate in a global world. They must understand and harness cultural nuances.

Issue 2: Ignoring local context
The second issue is that engineering education in Nigeria is almost completely divorced from the reality of students’ life experiences. Let me give an example: A Nigerian student, who grew up in the rural area, having been successful in the relevant exams, is admitted to study Mechanical Engineering, say at UNILAG. Having grown up in such an environment, water is fetched from the stream, cloth washing is done by hand using native soap, fields are cultivated using hoes and cutlasses, etc. Basically, he has accumulated years of experience in simple agrarian life.

Then, this student arrives at UNILAG. The first days in class, his professor begins the lesson by talking about designing automation of driverless cars. Why because that is what is making the news in the U.S. This poor student has never even seen the inside of an internal combustion engine. The student is left to imagine the unimaginable rather than building on what she is familiar with using her previous knowledge as a building block. This student is forced to learn everything from up-down rather than ground-up. He not only needs to grasp basic engineering concepts, he needs to imagine a context that is so foreign to him that you might as well be talking about the Mars!

This type of education ignores the students’ life journey and suddenly transposed into a different stratosphere. So much of the knowledge gained over the course of her life is now declared irrelevant, during his engineering training! That creates what we often refer to in mathematical modeling as a jump discontinuity. It would have been more effective to provide an opportunity for an open sharing of experiences, and then build a coherent value-adding knowledge. I would suggest that it is much more relevant than knowledge that is Western-centric!

Here is another example. When I was an Engineering student, many years ago, all my textbooks in Petroleum Engineering had one thing in common – they all focused on oil fields in Texas. This is because all of my textbooks came from the United States.

Now obviously, the issue of Western cultural dominance extends beyond Engineering and even beyond academics but to me, this is particularly outrageous. We do not need to look to Texas for examples of Petroleum fields; we do not even need to look elsewhere in Africa! After all, Nigeria is the number one producer of oil on the African continent, and has been for some time. Our students should be learning about our own Petroleum fields!

This type of training desensitizes students to their own local contexts. It, in effect, reduces the amount of stake they feel they have in Nigeria, divorcing them from the reality of their own country and people.

As the Vice Provost for Global Programmes, one of my mottos is “Think Globally, Act Locally.” If we do not find a way to educate our students about the issues relevant to Nigeria, we cannot expect them to act on those issues.

Issue 3: Job Expectations
The third issue I see in Engineering Education is the issue of job expectations. Most Nigerians attend engineering schools and expect that when they graduate, a multinational corporation would employ them, and enjoy good earnings for the rest of their working life.

While this view of the profession may have been true at one time, though certainly not for everyone, the present reality is much more complex, even in developed countries.

We no longer live in a “punch-in, punch-out” world. He/she should be thinking on how to create value by solving local problems and bringing such solutions to the market place, thereby creating jobs, rather seeking jobs! There are so many problems waiting to be solved. If engineers have solutions to any of these problems, there are people willing to pays for it.

In order to do this, engineers do not only need technical knowledge; they need a variety of skills, and the correct mindset, to succeed in the new Global Century. Life-long learning is needed to continuously re-tool for the ever-changing world.

With these issues briefly defined, now, it is time to suggest what can be done to fix it.

Educating Successful Engineers for the 21st Century.
Beyond merely understanding the technical dimension of the profession, which is, of course, a prerequisite for success 21st century engineers must be three-dimensional thinkers. This means that they must have: Technical competency, local contextualisation and global competency.

The problems facing Nigeria are intricately linked with the rest of the globe, and engineering students must understand this fact. To ensure that they do, some serious changes must be made to the way we train them to the way we teach them how to think.

So how do we go about training an engineer who thinks in these three dimensions? I would like to suggest a few steps:
Step 1: Integrate local knowledge
The first step is that teachers must be much more than just purveyors of contents. Today, the savvy student can source technical contents from a wide variety of sources just google it!

As I stated earlier, there seems to be a decoupling of the Nigerian students experiences from his/her engineering training. How can that be! It makes no sense to ignore the gifts, skills, talents, and knowledge that people have gathered over the course of their lives. To train a successful engineer, we must have a seamless integration between what they already experience and what they need to know! For example, while teaching gaming theory or probability, why not focus on the game of Ayo instead of baseball!

At Penn State, our University President, Eric Barron, uses an analogy that I would like to borrow here. You see, Penn State is a world-class research institution. We have some of the most renowned, world-class sought-after researchers in the entire world. Most of these researchers are happy to speak with students one-on-one, or provide them research opportunities. Nevertheless, many students who attend Penn State go through their entire academic career without taking advantage of all of the resources the university has to offer. They get up, they go to class, and then they return to their dorm room, do homework, pass exams and play video games or watch television.

Celebrities / Man Publicly Executed In Yemen For Raping, Murdering 3-year-old Girl. [photos] by Classicjadon(m): 6:58pm On Jul 31, 2017

A man convicted of raping and murdering a three-year-old girl was executed in the Yemeni capital Sanaa on Monday in front of hundreds of onlookers, witnesses said.

A policeman fired five bullets from an assault rifle into Muhammad al-Maghrabi, 41, as he lay with his hands handcuffed behind his back on a blanket on the ground in Sanaa’s Tahrir Square, after a judge read out the death sentence.

The execution drew an unusually large number of onlookers, some perched up telegraph poles and many watching from rooftops, because of the young age of the victim. Security was tight amid fears of a revenge attack on Mr. Maghrabi by armed tribesmen related to his victim.

The police truck transporting Mr. Maghrabi to the square was escorted by five police patrol vehicles. Yahya al-Matari, the father of the girl, told reporters after the execution that he felt as if he had been reborn. “This is the first day in my life,” he said. “I am relieved now.”

Celebrities / Check Out The Amount A Ghanaian Church And Pastor Charge For Sharp Miracles by Classicjadon(m): 2:44pm On Jul 28, 2017
Naija Newspapers gathered that a church in Ghana released what is assumed to be their 'price list' for what they termed 'special offering' for getting miracles. Like the popular saying 'wonders shall never end', this list from a Ghanaian church is nothing short of a thing to wonder about.

A social media user identified as @ozorchristian, shared a picture of a church's 'special offering' which he claims is from a Ghanaian church. According to the picture, the church offers as little as $240 (about N86,000) for a 24-hour miracle, and as much as $5,000, (N1.8m) for you to be elevated to a millionaire status.

Sharing the picture, @ozorchristian, wrote: "It seems some Ghanaian pastors and churches are learning fast from fake Nigerian pastors. Here is a list of amount to sow if you want sharp sharp miracle in this Ghanaian Church ...

Politics / Farmers/herdsmen Clashes Will Consume Nigeria, Northern Govs Warn by Classicjadon(m): 10:59am On Jul 28, 2017

Governors of the 19 Northern states of the federation have warned that if sentiments are not put aside, the persistent clashes between farmers and herdsmen will consume the region and the entire country.

The chairman of Northern Governor’s Forum and governor of Borno state, Kashim Shettima, who stated the governor’s position, also hinted that the region’s governors along traditional rulers will adopt a consensus position on restructuring at a crucial meeting in Kaduna.

Speaking during the forum’s meeting with the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar; Emirs and chiefs in Kaduna, Shettima warned ambitious politicians to always weigh the consequences of their words and actions and avoid playing to the gallery.

Warning against farmers-herders clashes, he said, “Another no less important issue on the front burner of national discourse, which by far impacts more on the socio-economic lives of the people of the North than the rest of the country is the continuing, and in some cases worsening, conflict between farmers and herdsmen.

“Although the struggle over grazing land is a recurring phenomenon in many African countries south of the Sahara, the case in Nigeria has come to assume a dangerous and worrisome dimension in terms of both its massive scale and widespread scope, and the ethno-religious colouration it has been so cynically given.

“I dare to say that unless we are ready to cast aside all sentiment-laden approaches to tackling this monstrous problem, it is capable of consuming the very social fabric of the North and even condemning the entire country to unwarranted destruction.

“It requires no knowledge of rocket science to discern that the future prosperity of the North in particular and Nigeria in general squarely rests on agriculture and the human resources and talent we can bring to bear on it”.

Shettima urged politicians to look into the future generation with the utmost sense of responsibility instead of cashing in on some immediate opportunities like the 2019 elections.

His words: “We, the political and traditional leaders of Northern Nigeria, are gathered here today against the backdrop of certain developments in Nigeria’s political landscape that we can only ignore to the detriment of the wellbeing of our people and the development of our region. We have witnessed in the last few months, all manner of political agitations, ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous.

“ While some arguably more moderate and mature voices have advocated for the scrapping of the 1999 Constitution and a return to the 1963 Republican Constitution with its own emphasis on regionalism, others have called for the practice of “true” or “fiscal” federalism.

“Yet another group is aggressively seeking to commit the nation to adopt the Report of the 2014 Constitutional Conference as the authoritative basis for discussing restructuring, while at the extreme end of the scale, we have the champions of a separatist agenda who are hell-bent on balkanizing the country. I shall in due course return to this restructuring palaver”.

The governor continued: “I now return to the currently trending matter of restructuring. It is common knowledge that following the recent upsurge in the clamor for restructuring and even secession, the Acting President held a series of meetings with all stakeholders from all sections of the country.

“It is also my expectation that at the end of this meeting today and, God willing, tomorrow’s meeting of the Governors, the Forum and our esteemed royal fathers will adopt a consensus position on restructuring of the country that will be reflective of the general overall interest of the people of Northern Nigeria and which will attract popular acceptance.

“It is of vital importance to arrive at such consensus position because it is crucial to dispel the erroneous impression created and disseminated by certain interests in this country that the North is opposed to restructuring.

“Secondly, it is important to do so not only to accommodate the mainstream of Northern public opinion, our primary constituency, but to also counter the specific versions of restructuring which generally seek to place the North in a position of strategic political and economic disadvantage, but portrayed as the only versions that can work for the nation.

“To do this, we need statesmen to chaperone the art of governance, not politicians; for we need to look at the coming generations not the coming elections. We need to look far into the future with the utmost sense of responsibility and not cash in on some immediate opportunities. We need to constantly weigh the consequences of our words and actions and avoid playing to the gallery”.

We Can’t Allow New Sambisas

– el-Rufai

On his part, Kaduna State governor, Malam Nasir el-Rufai, yesterday advised governors of the 19 Northern states and traditional rulers to outline views on the question of constitutional arrangements of the country.

el-Rufai, in his remarks at the meeting of the Northern governors’ forum held in Kaduna, said the region should point the way forward with specific proposals that strengthen the country while devolving powers to the states and local governments.

The governor averred that after the recent bitter experience, the leaders will not be forgiven if they allow the emergence of new Sambisas in the region that provide safe refuge for outlaws.

According to him, armed robbery, kidnapping and cattle rustling are headquartered in these ungoverned forest ranges.

He said, “Your excellencies, your royal highnesses, the challenges before us are immense. We commend the resilience of our communities in the North-East which have begun the process of recovery from the ravages of insurgency. But security remains a challenge across our states.

“The frequency and savagery of communal clashes in some of our states, and the prevalence of untoward phenomena such as rural banditry, cattle-rustling and kidnapping need to be tackled.

“The festering sores left by previous conflicts in which proper closure, accountability for crimes and reconciliation were not affected appear to be accelerating a descent into impunity and a situation in which many elites are too short-sighted to recognise the dangers of embroiling our communities in repeated cycles of violence.

“The message needs to go out to our communities that peace requires a determination to have peace, sustain peace and protect it. There is no humane alternative to choosing to resolve all differences by exclusively peaceful and legal means. Our region is the most diverse area in our vast country.

“It cannot afford the ghastly luxury of transforming differences in religion, language and culture into sources of conflict, death and destruction. Your Excellencies, Your Royal Highnesses, we need to challenge our elite to stop the commodification of difference and unite our peoples for development and prosperity”.

Politics / Buhari: I’ll Be Back Soon |SEE PROVE by Classicjadon(m): 7:18am On Jul 26, 2017

For the first time since he returned to London in May on medical vacation, President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday spoke on his health.

He said he was “making good progress” and would soon “return to my duties”.

His message is contained in a letter to Guinean President Alpha Conde. In the letter, Buhari thanked Conde for last week’s nationwide prayers held in Guinea for his recovery and good health.

The July 24 letter, which was given to reporters in Abuja yesterday by presidential spokesman Femi Adesina, is a follow-up to President Buhari’s phone call to Conde, who is the Chairman of the Assemblies of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU).

The President wrote: “I thank you for your kind and thoughtful action in organising nationwide prayers for my good health. It is a gesture that I will forever cherish and treasure.

“Your Excellency will be pleased to hear that I am making good progress and as soon as doctors advise, I shall return to my duties and continue serving the Nigerian people who elected me and are daily praying for my recovery.”

In an earlier letter, President Buhari accepted his nomination as leader of the “2018 AU Theme on the Fight Against Corruption”. He was nominated by the African leaders at the 29th Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the AU in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on July 4.

Thanking Conde for his kind words and the nomination, the President wrote: “I wish to express my readiness to accept this new important role and to reiterate my commitment to contribute towards our collective efforts to strengthen good governance and development on the continent. I, therefore, look forward to working closely with you in the realisation of this objective.”

Also yesterday, Adesina and the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, explained why another set of governors will meet with the President in London today. With them at the briefing was the SSA on Media and Publicity to the Acting President, Mr Laolu Akande.

A delegation of party leaders and governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) met with the President at the Nigerian House in London on Sunday.

Adesina said: ”You know that on Sunday there was a major development about the health of Mr. President in which we had pictures from London and details from one of those who saw him, Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha.”

Shehu said the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) Chairman and Zamfara State Governor Abdulaziz Yari is the leader of the governors’ delegation.

”In the delegation are Governors Dave Umahi (Ebonyi), Umar Ganduje (Kano), Kassim Shettima (Borno), Samuel Ortom (Benue), Udom Emmanuel (Akwa Ibom) and Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo).

“They will leave by tonight (last night) and arrive in the United Kingdom (UK) early tomorrow (today). They will have a 3pm meeting tomorrow (today) with the president,” he said.

He said Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose, who has been vocal on the issue, was not part of the delegation becauase ”the selection was made by the governors’ forum and you will see that the delegation is headed by Governor Yari, who is chairman of that forum. So that question should go to the forum.”

On the need for another delegation after the APC delegation said the president was recuperating fast and would soon return home, Adesina said: “It should be the other way. Instead of being curious it should be the right time for the visit. When somebody has recovered or something or the other happened, it is in our culture for us to visit such a person.

“So, this is the right time because the news is that he is recovering and recovering well. I’m sure you are aware of the letter he just wrote to the African Union Chairman when he told him that he is making very good progress. So, this is the proper time for him to receive delegations rather than when he was indisposed,” he said.

He said ministers-designate would soon be sworn in.

Adesina insisted that he could not give a timeline on the President’s return. “The information at our disposal is that the President will return as soon as his doctors give him the go ahead.

“In terms of whether there will be a cabinet shake-up, the President is the head of the government and it is his prerogative, so nobody can speak for him on that.”

Asked why the President didn’t make a broadcast to Nigerians, Adesina said: “It is a question of what he prefers and this is what he prefers for now. He would rather receive that delegation and that is what is happening. If the President opts for address option, he will do it”.

Shehu added: “The visit is a goodwill visit and there is nothing more than that. I believe Nigerians in various positions have been yearning to go and meet the President at some point, this obviously was not permitted.

“But given the change in circumstances, you can see that is coming from London itself and from the President. As a cultural people, we visit people leaving hospital and I’m sure the President himself will be delighted to see people from the six geo-political zones coming to convey the goodwill of Nigerians”.

On why the President’s media team was not part of the delegation, Shehu said presidential cameraman Bayo Omoboriwo was on the trip “which is more important than me being there.

“They say a picture conveys more than a thousand words, Bayo will be there and I think it will be more beneficial to Nigerians than if the Special Adviser was on that trip without a cameraman,” he said, adding, “as to who is sponsoring, I don’t have any information on that.”

Politics / Federal Government Approves Tax Reduction For Telecom Firms - Adebayo Shittu by Classicjadon(m): 6:42am On Jul 26, 2017

The Federal Government on Tuesday said that it had resolved to reduce taxes payable by telecommunications operators in order to enable them to expand their services to the hinterland.

It stated this through the Minister of Communications, Mr. Adebayo Shittu, at the 2017 Information Communications Technology and Telecommunication Expo in Lagos, which was organised by the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The minister said that the expansion of telecom services to the hinterland would ensure that many more people, especially the underserved and unserved populace, had access to basic services.

In carrying out the government’s decision, Shittu said that the National Economic Council had approved a policy to harmonise Right of Ways charges payable by telecommunications companies on local, state and federal highways.

He said, “The policy, when it comes to fruition, will minimise the spaces occupied, burden on the roads and reduce taxes payable by the telecoms operators.

“As such, with the RoW challenges gone, operators can invest in last mile infrastructure, especially fibre, that will boost services.”

The minister added that the ministry would liaise with states and relevant stakeholders for the smooth implementation of the RoW project.

He also said that the ministry would continue to support the establishment of companies in the areas of hardware and software development by ensuring that they were protected through regulations or other means.

Shittu added, “We will assist them to grow. We have accepted that Nigeria must take the leadership role in Africa’s Information and Communications Technology ecosystem.

“We are amenable to Public-Private Partnership relationships to drive the ministry’s projects. We, therefore, assert that 2017 must be a year of action.”

The President, LCCI, Dr. Nike Akande, said there was no better time to harness the benefits of ICT than now “when the economy is in dire need of diversification.”

She added, “Today, virtually all sectors leverage ICT for optimal performance. This is evident in the financial services sector, where electronic banking is now the vogue.”

Education / Pic:new Report Reveals How School Children In Nigeria Are Being Taught To Smoke by Classicjadon(m): 3:39pm On Jul 24, 2017

A special report by freelance journalist Abang Mercy, has detailed how primary and secondary school children in Nigeria are getting taught how to smoke. She narrated various stories about individuals whose smoking journey began as children.

Abang tells the story of 14-year-old Musa, who began smoking at 9. According to Musa, tobacco products were conspicuously within reach- just at his school’s entrance.

He said: “I have today become a chain smoker, I can’t do without cigarette’s and same applies to most of us you see here “As many times as I try to stop smoking, it becomes more difficult.”

Another individual identified as 25-year-old Ahmed Isa who has now graduated to using drugs, disclosed that just like Musa, his journey with cigarettes also began in elementary school. As he reached for an empty bottle of cough syrup, Ahmed stated:

“To keep my spirit high, there’s simply nothing else to do; and here’s my fifth codeine bottle.” Further describing how his disastrous journey began, he stated: “It all started with the “mallams” shop next to the school premises where we (students) turned to for our tobacco needs.”

Now, Ahmed revealed that he and his friends take anything they find to feel ‘high’; including gasoline, correction fluid, rubber solution, aerosol, nail polish removers and kerosene. According to a hawker who sells in front of the L.E.A Kubwa II primary school in Bwari Area Council Abuja, the students come to buy biscuits during the day and at night, they come to buy cigarettes.

Umar Ado stated: “I don’t sell to them, but a lot of people do. At night these children want to behave more maturely and they feel smoking makes them look tough. “The people selling the cigarettes are a problem, but if you enter the school, like at the football field, you will see a lot of young boys smoking.

“People have taken these primary schools as places to smoke, especially the government ones that have a lot of space.” A female teacher at the same school who spoke on the condition of anonymity stated: “Well, we cannot stop them from going to buy the things they need.

“We have subjects like civil education that we use to teach the children about bad social behaviour, but our efforts stop at the school. We can’t control them when they leave. “We have been trying to dissuade all these bad boys from coming to smoke in the schools and spoiling the children, we even raised the fence and have been working to put a barbed wire, but these things take time.”

According to 2015 estimates from the World Health Organization (WHO), over 1.1billion people smoked tobacco. The report notes that it is almost impossible to find tuck-shops around schools in the nation’s capital, which do not sell cigarettes. Over 7 million people die each year from using tobacco.

Two children of the same parents aged 12 and six years old have been confirmed dead following heavy floods that swept them away in Okpoko, New Haven Layout in Ogbaru, Anambra State.

The rainfall which started on Friday night lasted till the early morning of Saturday, leading to heavy floods in the area.

The floods left several properties damaged in parts of Onitsha, Owelle Aja and Oduke in Obosi and Okpoko areas.

Church buildings, walls, vehicles and houses were also damaged as a result.

In Okpoko area, streets affected included Achina, Ojibe, Onyekwelu and Emenike.

Consoling Mr. and Mrs. John Obasi, parents of the deceased children, a chieftain of the Progressive People’s Alliance, Mr. Godwin Ezeemo, decried the lack of proper town planning and drainage system, which he said was responsible for regular flooding of the area.

He said floods had caused untold havoc in several parts of the state.

He called on both the state and federal governments to come to the aid of the displaced and affected families.

President-General of Okpoko community, Linus Ezenwamma, blamed the flooding on indiscriminate dumping of refuse, leading to blockage of drainage outlets .

Crime / Pic: Police Rescue Kidnapped 73-year-old Woman In Imo, Arrest Abductor by Classicjadon(m): 6:23pm On Jul 22, 2017

After spending five nights in the hands of her abductors, a 73-year-old woman simply identified as Eunice has been rescued by men of the Imo State Police Command. One of the alleged kidnappers was arrested.

A police source, who pleaded anonymity told Southern City News at the headquarters of the command in Owerri, shortly after the woman was rescued, that the septuagenarian was maltreated by her kidnappers throughout the period she was held captive.

According to the police officer, upon receipt of information of the abduction of the elderly woman, the State Commissioner of Police, Chris Ezike, swiftly dispatched the heads of three tactical units of the command that led the operation.

He said, “The old woman was rescued at about 10.50 this morning at an uncompleted building at Mbieri in the Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State. She was kept there for five nights without food and water. We were able to nab one of the kidnappers, while three of his accomplices fled.”

The kidnap victim, who spoke to our correspondent at the command headquarters, said that she was abducted on Saturday (July 15, 2017) in her house at Ogbor village in Ekwe-Dim, Isiala Mbano Local Government of the state by four young men in a white salon car.

The septuagenarian disclosed that her abductors took her to an uncompleted building in Mbaitoli LGA, where they later contacted her family and made a demand of N1.1m as the ransom for her freedom.

She said, “The four young men took me to an uncompleted building and told me that my children are very rich. They later called my husband, Sir Lambert Nwokoro, and asked him to bring N1.1m or he would not see me again.

“He pleaded with them that he could only afford N1m but they demanded that the sum must be complete.”

The visibly elated woman explained that they later called her husband that he had until 10pm on Wednesday to make the money available, adding that it was in the process that the police swooped on the kidnappers’ hideout and rescued her.

“They did not give me any food; they only gave me energy drink,” she said.

Confirming the breakthrough, the CP disclosed that though the woman had been rescued unhurt, his command would not rest on its oars until the fleeing three other abductors were nabbed.

Ezike said, “This is another result of our well thought-out whistle-blowing policy. The breakthrough was as a result of local intelligence. Immediately the information came, I dispatched three tactical units of the command, who rescued this mummy. We will continue to sensitise our people that crimes do not pay.”

He said one revolver pistol and 30 rounds of live ammunition were recovered from the suspect.

“There is no crime-free society and there is no upsurge in criminal activities in the state. But by projection, we expect that as we have entered the second half of the year, we will witness increased commercial activities and more deviant behaviours,” the CP added.

Politics / Truck Kills Shakiru Balogun, APC chairmanship Aspirant In Lagos by Classicjadon(m): 7:34am On Jul 22, 2017

Tragedy struck on the eve of local government council election in Lagos State as a PSP truck crushed a chairmanship aspirant of the Ikotun/Igando Local Council Development Area to death.

The deceased, Shakiru Balogun, aka SAB, was a former Chairman, National Union of Local Government Employees of the LCDA and a member of the All Progressives Congress. He couldn’t clinch the party’s ticket at the primaries.

Saturday PUNCH learnt that the aspirant was going to the council secretariat around 12pm on Friday when the driver of the PSP truck lost control of the truck and rammed it into Balogun’s Toyota 4runner at Okofili Bus Stop, LASU-Isheri Road.

An eyewitness, Fadeyi Daisi, said 52-year-old Balogun died on the spot.

He added, “The PSP driver fled the scene, but I don’t know if he was later arrested by the police. It was very tragic. The door of the sport utility vehicle was cut with a saw before emergency officials could extricate his body.”

A resident of Abu Taiwo Street, Afolabi Bus Stop, Akesan, where Balogun lived, Joshua Ogundipe, said the incident had thrown the community into mourning.

Ogundipe added, “He accepted defeat at the primaries in good faith. He was going to the office when the incident happened. He is survived by two wives and four children. He had been buried according to Islamic rite.”

Celebrities / Justin Bieber Banned From Performing In China 'bad Behaviour' by Classicjadon(m): 12:18pm On Jul 21, 2017

Beijing’s Municipal Bureau of Culture said “Bieber’s lifestyle overseas and his words and actions when he last performed in China had generated public dissatisfaction.

“Given efforts to purify the performing arts environment in China, it was not appropriate to bring in artists with bad behavior. We hope Justin Bieber will continue to improve his behavior as part of his growth, and become a singer truly loved by the public.”

Bieber performed in China in 2013 when media coverage centered on him stripping on stage in Beijing to reveal his bare torso, being carried up the steps of the Great Wall of China, and riding a segway, again shirtless, through the streets.

The 23 year old singer has become notorious for a string of indiscretions and scandals in recent years, shedding the clean-cut image he had when he burst onto the scene as a teenager.

Biber is currently on his third world tour, with Asian dates in Japan, India, Hong Kong, Philippines, Singapore and Indonesia.
Bieber’s official website does not show any scheduled tour dates in mainland China. But there appears to be some confusion about a possible stop in Shanghai.

The Canadian pop star is due to perform in Tokyo, Hong Kong and Singapore in September and October, according to his website but no Chinese dates have been announced.

Several big name musicians have been blocked from performing in China, including Lady Gaga, Bjork and Bon Jovi.

The Lagos State Government on Wednesday extended the restriction of movement across the State noting that it had been slightly expanded and will now be enforced between 7 am and 3pm onSaturday July 22, to allow for a smooth conduct of the Local Government elections and unhindered participation.

In a statement issued by the State’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, the Government also reiterated the call for a peaceful and orderly conduct by the electorate, on Saturday, as the dtate holds elections that will usher in new Chairmen and Councillors in the 20 Local Government and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) across the State.

According to the Commissioner, the State Government and security agencies will leave no stone unturned in ensuring a free and fair election, while ensuring safety of electoral officials and voters.

He also urged residents to be peaceful and orderly in casting and protecting their votes in their respective wards for Chairmen and councilors who are expected to drive development at the third tier of government.

Ayorinde explained that as the election that would bring on board a new set of public officers for the next four years at the local government level, the restriction of movement will allow the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) and the security agencies to distribute electoral materials in good time and ensure a seamless electoral process.

“The police and other security agencies have been maintaining law and order since the commencement of campaign by political parties. They are poised to ensure that the voting on Saturday is conducted smoothly without public disturbance,” he said.

He added that all political parties, candidates and their supporters as well as the general public are assured of safety throughout the period of voting and collation.

The Commissioner also thanked Lagosians for always being peace-loving, while urging them to perform their civic obligation by trooping out with their Permanent Voters Card (PVC) “to show their commitment to participatory democracy and the importance of development at the local government level.”

Science/Technology / These Are The Big Changes Coming To Google's Search App by Classicjadon(m): 6:17pm On Jul 19, 2017

Google's goal for the next update to its Search app for Android and iOS: Make it more personal.

The company outlined a major update to the app, which rolled out Wednesday in the U.S. and internationally over the next couple weeks.

At the core is a feed Google says will be smarter. Not only will it feature stories and other content based on your searches, but also considers what's trending near your location. The outcome sounds familiar to another, widely popular news feed on competitor Facebook.

For example, the feed might show the latest weather, followed by stories or videos based on search results.

Shashi Thakur, vice president of engineering at Google, says the update will make it easier to "discover, explore and stay connected to what matters to you—even when you don’t have a query in mind."

Users will soon have the option to "follow" search results, such as movies, sports teams or bands. An example featured by Google shows a user following the Netflix series Stranger Things after searching for details on its second season. But unlike Facebook, it's just based on your own queries — not your friends'.
