PoliticsJummai Alhassan Visits Makarfi In PDP Headquarters by Classicjadon(op): 9:59am On Jul 18, 2017
The Peoples Democratic Party has asked women to be ready to pay for nomination forms instead of waiting to be asked to pick them free by political parties.

It said this would enhance their participation and also earn them respect in politics.

The Chairman, National Caretaker Committee of the party, Ahmed Makarfi, stated this when he received the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Senator Jummai Alhassan, at the PDP headquarters in Abuja on Monday.

Makarfi said the PDP would support the enactment of a law in support of the gender parity in politics and participation in governance.

He said, “If it is in compliance with the law, everybody will comply, but if you leave it flexible, it is an escapist route. Forget about the nomination form, pay and get the ticket. Let us do the right thing.”

He also made a case for consideration of the women’s move to secure legislation backing the 35 per cent affirmative action on women participation in politics and government in the ongoing constitutional amendment process.

While praising the minister for her productivity, Makarfi said, “I am not very surprised that you are doing well because you were trained and brought up by the PDP.”

Earlier, the minister had asked political parties to adopt a policy of voluntary electoral party gender quota system as a means of guaranteeing more participation of the womenfolk in politics and governance.

She described the initiative as a deliberate strategy of earmarking constituencies solely for female candidates during an election.

Alhassan lamented that Nigeria remained one of the most backward and poor performing countries on the African continent, in the area of women’s political participation and leadership.

She said, “Although the Nigerian constitution guarantees equality for everyone in all spheres, women have not enjoyed this constitutional right. As a result, we have been overtaken by countries like Rwanda with 66 per cent women’s representation in parliament, South Africa with 40 per cent, Seychelles over 50 per cent, Ghana, 35 per cent and a large chunk of the other African countries with over 25 per cent.

“Unfortunately, Nigeria stands at less than six per cent, making the country, though the ‘Giant of Africa,’ a midget in comparison to others in this area.”

She begged the party leaders to join hands with women as various political parties commenced preparations for 2019 general elections.

Apart from seeking gender quota, the minister said women were demanding that the APC, the PDP and other political parties should make women’s wings within political parties to be part of the political party decision-making structures, formulate strategies for prevention of violence against women in elections.

Here are 10 summaries of the things that happened this Thursday morning on All Nigeria Newspapers

1. The Supreme Court of Nigeria, yesterday, laid to rest the protracted leadership tussle in the Peoples Democratic Party between the two factions led by Ali Modu Sheriff and Ahmed Markafi. The court sacked Sheriff as the chairman of the former ruling party and reinstated Markafi.

2. Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-rufai has affirmed that the ruling All Progressives Congress must perform at all levels or risk the anger of Nigerians.

El Rufai noted that the current federal government was credibly elected by people of this country in 2015, and has continued to enjoy unwavering support and solidarity all the way and the party can’t afford to disappoint them.

3. Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, has directed the Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, to immediately release N1.6 billion for 16 states ravaged by floods across the country.

The states are Ekiti, Osun, Akwa Ibom, Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Ebonyi, Enugu, Abia, Oyo, Lagos, Plateau, Sokoto, Edo and Bayelsa. Adesina said the money will help cushion the effects of the disaster on residents of the states.

4. The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has stated that restructuring of Nigeria can only be actualized through alteration and amendment of the 1999 Constitution.

Dogara, who made the disclosure at a public hearing organised by the House Ad hoc Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution at the National Assembly, also assured that the National Assembly will not “constitute a stumbling block” to the aspirations of Nigerians for genuine changes in the constitution.

5. Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has vowed to release recent pictures of President Muhammadu Buhari to prove he is critically ill.

According to him, if they (FG) go further and try to continue to deceive Nigerians, he will release about 11 damaging pictures anytime from now on the President’s health.

6. The Peoples Democratic Party, Kogi State chapter, has accused Governor Yahaya Bello of wasting the resources of the state on frivolous political jamboree.

The PDP, in a statement by its State Publicity Secretary, Bode Ogunmola, accused the governor of disregarding the laid down rules and procedures in carrying out government business.

7. The West African Examination Council (WAEC) will release the May/June 2017 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results by next week Wednesday.

The board said the results of the WASSCE for School Candidates, 2017 will be released by the Council, on or before Wednesday next week.

8. Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, has said that the country will be self sufficient in rice production by November, which he said will force a reduction in the price of the commodity

He frowned on what he called the people’s unbridled penchant and taste for foreign foods, most of which, he said, were not as healthy and nutritious as those produced locally.

9. Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has claimed that President Muhammadu Buhari’s health condition is “pathetic” and he will never return to govern the country.

Fani-Kayode, in a series of tweets posted on Thursday, also called on Acting President Yemi Osinbajo to stop lying, because “Nigerians have a right to know the truth.”

10. Popular American singer, songwriter and global Evangelist, Don Moen has debunked the rumours that went viral of his death on Social media on Wednesday.

The American worship leader who dispelled the death rumour in a tweet had posted a family photo of himself, his father, his own son and two of his grandchildren.

Celebrities[video]: Beef Is Over! Falz And 9ice Have Lunch Together by Classicjadon(op): 11:09am On Jul 04, 2017

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XdIZoRzs1k

Did you think there was a Falz vs 9ice beef?

Well, think again.

The two artistes were sort of boxed into a “beef situation” after FalztheBahdGuy aired an opinion about Nigerian musicians glorifying fraudsters with their music and 9ice came forward making counter comments as though Falz’s opinion were directed to him.

9ice even went as far as asking Falz to alert the EFCC if he could prove his lyrics praised fraud and fraudsters.

But Falz has just shared a video on his Instagram page where both artistes seemed chilled in a restaurant. 9ice shared the same video with the caption “Settled”:
