The campus of the Osun state University (UNIOSUN) has been invaded by some officers and men of the Nigerian Air Force. The Punch reports that the officers attached to the Institute of Safety in Ipetu Ijesa, Osun state invaded the campus on Tuesday, May 23, in armored personnel carriers and other vehicles. The men reportedly stormed the institution armed with guns, cutlasses, daggers and clubs and other dangerous weapons. ATTENTION: Get all newspaper headlines here Naija Newspapers learnt that though the cause of their invasion is not yet known, some residents said the Air Force men came to arrest some students, who they claimed were involved in internet fraud, also known as Yahoo. Following the invasion, no fewer than 11 students and 2 workers were injured in the attack. The military men reportedly hit gun, cutlasses and sticks freely on anyone they came across. Confirming the attack on the institution, the dean, student affairs of UNIOSUN, Dr Adebimpe Adigun, said the situation was “bloody.” She said: “Six of our students are on bed in the hospital now, five are being treated on the bench now. Two members of staff were also wounded by these military men. “They did not fire a single shot, but they beat students and injured them. They also beat staff (members) and everybody. “They threatened to shoot me if I moved close to them. I knelt down and begged them, but they did not listen. “I called their commandant on the telephone to help talk to his boys. I think he did because they have left our campus now. “But we are yet to see some of our students who ran inside the bush to escape the attack.” However, the commandant of the air force, Air Commodore Jolasinmi, could not be reached for comments about the attack as his telephone indicated that it was out of coverage area. Meanwhile, a container load of arms has been intercepted by the Nigerian Customs Service at the Tin Can Island in Lagos, Premium Times reports. Ifeanyi Ubah, the managing director of Capital Oil and Gas Limited, has dragged the Department of State Service (DSS) to court over his arrest and detention by the Nigerian secret police. The Punch reports that Ubah’s lawyer Ifeoma Esom presented an ex parte application to Justice Mohammed Idris on Tuesday, May 9 and urged the judge to order the DSS to release Ubah. She said this is to prevent the security agency from forcing him to accept “whatever conditions they impose on him in exchange for his freedom.” After hearing the application, Justice Idris ordered the DSS to bring Ubah before him on May 12 with proof of why the businessman should not be released unconditionally. An affidavit filed by Secretary of Capital Oil and Gas Limited George Oranuba to support the ex parte application said the DSS arrested Ubah on account of allegations levelled against him by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria. Oranuba noted that the issue was already in the court but that did not stop the DSS and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the DSS still invited Ubah for questioning. He said Ubah had earlier been detained from March 24 to April 14, 2017 by the DSS over what the secret police called an act of “economic sabotage” involving an alleged diversion of petroleum products worth about N11bn. Oranuba said the agreement leading to the keeping of the petroleum product with Capital Oil, allowed “conversion and diversion of IT products by operators as long as the operator is prepared to re-deliver the products within seven days of demand by the owner of the product or to pay a penalty for non-re-delivery.” He added: “The agreement expressly states that any penalty due for non-re-delivery is to be treated as a debt and I verily believe that law enforcement agencies are not allowed to operate as debt collectors.” NAIJA NEWSPAPERS had earlier reported that Ubah described his arrest by the DSS as a complete attempt to blackmail him. The oil magnate said the claim by the DSS that he was involved in theft of petrol kept by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, in his tank farm in Lagos was a wrong accusation. The secret police on Friday May 5 picked up Ubah over his connection with the missing petroleum product, which was valued at over N11bn. After four years hiatus due to incessant Boko Haram attacks, Nigerian airline, Arik Arik begins operation to Maiduguri airport, Borno state. As sanity returns to the troubled North-East Nigeria, especially the worst hit states, like Borno state, commercial activities are also returning to the region. Arik airlines, which stopped operating in the heat of Boko Haram attacks on Maiduguri in 2013, has released a statement to announce the return of operation in the state. Arik announced the resumption of flights operations to Maiduguri via Abuja on May 9, 2017 citing the improvement in security situation of North East as the reason behind their resumption. The Cable is reporting that some aggrieved Nigerian soldiers, on Sunday, May 7, held hostage the deputy governor of Borno state Usman Durkwa at a military checkpoint in Yobe state. The incident occurred at Buni Gari town in Gujiba local government area of Yobe just as Durkwa was returning from Adamawa state. The Borno deputy governor had been to that state to attend the turbaning ceremony of his Adamawa counterpart Martins Babale that took place in Ganye local government area. NAIJA NEWSPAPERS gathered that Durkwa’s convoy reportedly ran into the military checkpoint but on seeing no soldier in sight tried to go through when the soldiers appeared and threatened to kill the deputy governor. According to the report, a policeman attached to the deputy governor’s office had tried to remove the barricade on the road when the soldiers jumped out of their hideouts and manhandled him. One of the soldiers reportedly hit the policeman on the head with his gun. Attempts by some security personnel in the deputy governor’s convoy to explain to the soldiers why the barricade was moved angered the soldiers the more and aggravated the situation. Eventually, Durkwa came down from his vehicle to speak with the soldiers who refused to accord him the respect due his position. A source said: “The soldiers took positions from different directions, aiming at the convoy, with the threat to open fire. “The soldiers pointed Ak47 riffle, anti-aircraft guns and one of them pointed a rocket propeller. “The deputy governor, having seen what was going on, after they had denied him access for about 15 minutes, came down from his vehicle to interfere, but instead of showing him respect, the soldiers became more lawlessness. “They said they don’t care about his office. They insulted and called him all sort of names. One of the soldiers, who pointed a gun at him, called him a bloody civilian and political thief. They said they won’t lose anything killing the deputy.” The source said the situation was brought under control after the intervention of a senior military official. The Army says it could not confirm the incident. “I don’t have that information. I am currently in Jos for a programme,” Kayode Ogunsanya, spokesman for the army in Yobe, said. Meanwhile, troops of 133 Special Forces Battalion of 707 Brigade, Makurdi, said they had rescued a retired police officer and 3 women allegedly abducted by bandits ad cattle rustlers in Niger. In a statement issued on Monday, May 8 in Makurdi, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations Major Olabisi Ayeni said the police officer, ASP Bahago Ibrahim, and the three women were abducted in Mangodo village in Niger.
