Saudi on my mind .. All the consultants in orthopaedic unit FMC makurdi have all left for saudi. That unit is completely shutdown . This is really not good for ordinary Nigerian. People will suffer and spend more money to get health care. Sad |
Angela Onwzoo Former President of the Nigerian Medical Association, Prof. Mike Ogirima, has blamed the mass exodus of workers in the health sector to other countries on poor pay by the Nigerian government. According to Ogirima, Saudi Arabia pays Nigerian professors of medicine between five to six million naira as monthly salary while the Federal Government pays their counterparts in the country the sum of N420, 000. Ogirima revealed that some of the professors are even paid up to seven million naira per month in Saudi Arabia while in Nigeria, the highest they are paid is less than N500,000 per month. The Professor of Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery stressed that the Federal Government is responsible for the massive brain drain in the health sector, lamenting that the situation is getting worse. Ogirima disclosed this during an exclusive interview with PUNCH HealthWise while speaking about the ongoing strike by doctors under the aegis of the National Association of Resident Doctors. He expressed concern over the government’s incessant failure to fulfil its part of the agreement reached with doctors as well as other labour unions. Ogirima said, “The strike is causing a lot of brain drain. We are losing our doctors. About two weeks ago, 150 doctors interested in practicing in the United Kingdom wrote their clinical exams. “I know many professors of my type that have secured employment with Saudi Arabia and they are paying them on the average, five million to six million naira per month. “But here in Nigeria, the Federal Government pays them the sum of N420, 000 per month. How will a professor survive with N420, 000 monthly, a professor of medicine? “There are great offers in Saudi Arabia and some of our professors are even paid up to seven million per month. “But we have chosen to be here; everybody can’t move. It is not that we are not as bright as those who have moved, but we have chosen to stay. There are so many reasons that hold some of us here.” Continuing, the former NMA president said, “There is a big problem in the health system. The problem is that the government cannot motivate the workforce. That is a failure on the government. The professionals that you have, you are playing with them. “You are paying legislatures huge hazard allowance per month and you are just giving doctors N5000. That is injustice in the system “For example, the plan by the Federal Government to place doctors in academia on Consolidated University Academic Salary Structure from the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure has caused a lot of problems in the health sector already. “That singular decision has caused a lot of senior doctors to move out of the country.” Recall that the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria had last week planned to go on strike from Monday over the Federal Government’s decision to place its members on the Consolidated University Academic Salary Structure from the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure. But the Federal Government had on Saturday moved to avert the planned strike by the MDCAN. The development followed a directive by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, to the National Salaries Income and Wages, to halt MDCAN’s placement on the Consolidated University Academic Salary Structure from the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure which was complied with on Saturday. The MDCAN comprised senior doctors, who are medical consultants that teach and guide the resident doctors in their professional operation towards becoming specialists and consultants in their area of specialisation. This is coming as the three-week-old industrial action embarked upon by the NARD has led to the shutdown of hospitals across the country. Speaking with PUNCH HealthWise over the impasse between NARD and the Federal Government, Prof. Ogirima pleaded with the striking doctors and their employer to negotiate and discuss how to resolve the ongoing issues of the resident doctors. He said, “They should try and narrow the gap, patients are suffering. The Federal Government has gone into agreement with the resident doctors and with other professionals. But how far has the government implemented such an agreement? The trust of the resident doctors in the Federal Government is no longer there. “The no-work-no-pay clause has been there; of course the resident doctors are prepared for that. It’s like you marched an animal to slaughter and you are expecting the animal at the abattoir to be scared of the knife again. “I think the minister should mellow down on the choice of words he is using. The resident doctors are mature enough and you can’t win a war by threatening. The minister should be more diplomatic in handling this issue.” NARD had on August 2 began a nationwide industrial action over unpaid salaries, benefits to families of members that lost their lives to the COVID-19 pandemic, poor hazard allowances, and failure to domesticate the Medical Residency Training Act 2017 in states, among others. https://healthwise.punchng.com/saudi-pays-nigerian-medicine-professors-n6m-monthly-salary-fg-pays-n420000-former-nma-boss/ |

South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit will not “authorise the formation of local governments” until the proposed visit of Founder of The Synagogue, Church of All Nations Prophet TB Joshua in January, a senior government official has asserted. The official, who spoke with Sudans Post, added that Mayardit would not agree to further actions on the contentious issue – even if the parties completed the requisite nomination process – until the planned visit of the prominent cleric in January. The official, who is involved in the power-sharing negotiations, explained: “The president does not intend to authorise the formation of states and local governments in 2020. TB Joshua will visit this country in January, and after this, the local governments will be formed.” It will not be Joshua’s first visit to South Sudan. The cleric was personally received by President during a visit to the East African nation in November 2019, where he led Mayardit and government officials in prayer for peace. “Time has come for us to put our differences behind us,” Joshua told the thousands of South Sudanese, who gathered to hear his message at the Presidential Palace in Juba. “This is the voice of God. Our leaders should overcome their division and agree to work together for the good of the country,” he insisted. “If I am a prophet, this will not go without fulfilment,” Joshua boldly declared, then leading the troubled nation in prayer for peace. In his comments that day, Mayardit said: “We have come a long distance searching for peace. Now that the man of God, Prophet TB Joshua, has come to South Sudan, I believe peace is at the corner.” Three months later, the historic peace agreement was signed, ending the civil war which ravaged the world’s youngest country since 2013 after a fall-out between Mayardit and Vice President Riek Machar. Last month, a letter sent by the President to the cleric, acknowledged the pastor’s role in bringing peace to the war-torn nation, surfaced online. “I would like thank you, humble servant of the Most High God, for the higher grace and anointing upon your life, and for your love and humility by coming on your prophetic and historic visit on 12th November 2019 when the nation was in a desperate situation after experiencing civil war violence for many years,” the president wrote. “The world organisations tried to negotiate peace but where human wisdom failed, God has the final answer. You prophesied that it shall be a new beginning for the nation and… now the nation is at peace,” he acknowledged. Prior to Joshua’s visit, multiple reconciliatory efforts had been made to restore peace in South Sudan, including a visit to Pope Francis in Vatican City where he famously kissed the feet of both leaders. https://thenationonlineng.net/south-sudan-stops-councils-formation-till-tb-joshuas-visit/amp/ |
https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-01295-8 Hopes rise for coronavirus drug remdesivir Despite conflicting studies, results from largest trial yet show the antiviral speeds up recovery, putting it on track to become a standard of care in the United States. An experimental drug — and one of the world’s best hopes for treating COVID-19 — could shorten the time to recovery from coronavirus infection, according to the largest and most rigorous clinical trial of the compound yet. The drug, called remdesivir, interferes with the replication of some viruses, including SARS-CoV-2, which is responsible for the current pandemic. On 29 April, Anthony Fauci, director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), announced that a clinical trial in more than 1,000 people had showed that those taking remdesivir recovered in 11 days on average, compared with 15 days for those on a placebo. “Although a 31% improvement doesn’t seem like a knockout 100%, it is a very important proof of concept,” Fauci said. “What it has proven is that a drug can block this virus.” There were also fewer deaths among trial participants who received the drug, he said, but that trend was not statistically significant. The shortened recovery time, however, was significant, and was enough of a benefit that investigators decided to stop the trial early, he said, to ensure that those participants who were receiving placebo could now access the drug. Fauci added that remdesivir would become a standard treatment for COVID-19. The news comes after weeks of data leaks and on a day of mixed results from clinical trials of the drug. The drug’s maker, Gilead Sciences of Foster City, California, announced on the same day that in its own trial, more than half of 400 participants with severe COVID-19 had recovered from their illness within two weeks of receiving treatment. But the study lacked a placebo-controlled arm, making the results difficult to interpret. Also on 29 April, a smaller trial run in China announced that it had found1 no benefits from remdesivir when compared with a placebo. But that trial was stopped early owing to difficulty in enrolling participants as the outbreak subsided in China. Nevertheless, onlookers are hopeful that the large NIAID trial provides the first glimmer of promise in a race to find a drug that works against the coronavirus, which has infected more than three million people worldwide. “There is a lot of focus on remdesivir because it’s potentially the best shot we have,” says virologist Stephen Griffin at the University of Leeds, UK. |

https://www.dailysabah.com/life/health/russia-says-it-developed-covid-19-treatment-based-on-anti-malaria-drug/amp Russia's Federal Biomedical Agency on Saturday said it has developed a drug for the treatment of COVID-19. The agency said its drug was based on mefloquine, which is used to prevent or treat malaria. The drug will allegedly provide effective treatment for COVID-19 patients with varying severity. According to the agency's statement, the drug prevents virus replication in cells and as a result, stops the inflammatory process caused by the virus. Veronika Skvortsova, the agency’s head, said Mefloquine has to be combined with antibiotics for the maximum effect, allowing an increase in the concentration of antiviral agents in blood plasma and lungs. This will ensure effective treatment of patients with various degrees of coronavirus infection, Skvortsova said. The agency said it was developing an effective and safe scheme for the prevention of coronavirus on the basis of mefloquine. The treatment was developed taking Chinese and French experience into account, it added. COVID-19 treatment, for now, focuses on relieving symptoms such as breathing assistance. Companies around the world are racing to develop vaccines. A few have launched early safety testing in humans, but experts say it could take a year or more to develop and test a vaccine. |

National President, ASUU, Nasir Issa- Fagge After five months and 10 days that the public universities have been shut due to the strike by the Academic Staff of Union of Universities, the Federal Government and the universities lecturers on Wednesday finally resolved to sign the 2013 Agreement. This is the review of the FGN-ASUU 2012 Memorandum of Understanding reached on the 2009 Agreement. Both parties, however, refused to give details of the agreement to journalists who witnessed the signing of the agreement. The meeting was almost aborted by the union but for the prompt intervention of some stakeholders. ASUU had on Tuesday vowed not to attend the meeting because there was no commitment and proper invitation from the government. The union had demanded the proof of payment of the N200bn universities infrastructure fund, non-victimisation clause, review of the Agreement in 2014 and that a representative of government, preferably the Attorney-General of the Federation sign the agreement as conditions to call-off the strike which began on July 1. Our correspondent, however, gathered that the union got three of its demands while it relinquished one to the government.http://www.punchng.com/news/at-last-fg-ASUU-sign-agreement-to-end-strike/ |
