Vlad III, Prince of Wallachia (1431–1476/77), was a member of the House of Drăculești, a branch of the House of Basarab, also known, using his patronymic, as (Vlad) Drăculea or (Vlad) Dracula.

He was posthumously dubbed Vlad the Impaler (Romanian: Vlad Țepeș, pronounced [ˈvlad ˈt͡sepeʃ]), and was a three-time Voivode of Wallachia, ruling mainly from 1456 to 1462, the period of the incipient Ottoman conquest of the Balkans. His father, Vlad II Dracul, was a member of the Order of the Dragon, which was founded to protect Christianity in Eastern Europe. Vlad III is revered as a folk hero in Romania and Bulgaria for his protection of the Romanians and Bulgarians both north and south of the Danube. A significant number of Bulgarian common folk and remaining boyars (nobles) moved north of the Danube to Wallachia, recognized his leadership and settled there following his raids on the Ottomans.

As the cognomen "The Impaler" suggests, his practice of impaling his enemies is part of his historical reputation.[2] During his lifetime, his reputation for excessive cruelty spread abroad, to Germany and elsewhere in Europe. The name of the vampire Count Dracula in Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula was inspired by Vlad's patronymic and reputation.
During his life, Vlad wrote his name in Latin documents as Wladislaus Dragwlya, vaivoda partium Transalpinarum (1475).

His Romanian patronymic Dragwlya (or Dragkwlya)[3] Dragulea, Dragolea, Drăculea,[4][5] is a diminutive of the epithet Dracul carried by his father Vlad II, who in 1431 was inducted as a member of the Order of the Dragon, a chivalric order founded by Emperor Sigismund in 1408. Dracul is the Romanian definite form, the -ul being the suffixal definite article (deriving from Latin ille). The noun drac "dragon" itself continues Latin draco. In Modern Romanian, the word drac has adopted the meaning of "devil" (the term for "dragon" now being balaur or dragon). This has led to misinterpretations of Vlad's epithet as characterizing him as "devilish".

Vlad's nickname of Țepeș ("Impaler" identifies his favourite method of execution but was only attached to his name posthumously, in c. 1550. Before this, however, he was known as Kazıklı Bey (Impaler Lord) by the Ottoman Empire after their armies encountered his "forests" of impaled victims.

Husband accused of murdering wife claims she ran off to join ISIS

Police say Shapi Shakhshaev, 37, allegedly stabbed Fatima, 30, to death and then dismembered her body in their Moscow bathroom while their three children slept

A husband has been accused of murdering his wife - then trying to cover up her death by claiming she had run away to join ISIS.

Police say Shapi Shakhshaev, 37, allegedly stabbed Fatima, 30, to death and then dismembered her body in the bathroom while their three children slept in their beds.

He then told the cops in June that she had left Moscow with a female friend to go to Chechnya, which has a mainly Muslim population, and from there had travelled to Syria.

But after finding out from her worried family the couple were in the process of getting divorced and she was going to take the children, police searched the flat.

They uncovered the murder weapon and also traces of blood.

A police spokesman said: "We were suspicious because by all accounts she was devoted to her children and it's unlikely she would have left them with her husband even if she was leaving."

Fatima's family said she was unhappy that her husband spent too much time playing computer games and was convinced he had a lover.
He in turn had claimed she was a drug addict and they were always rowing.

Fatima's mother Raisa said: "He kept saying she was a drug addict, but it just wasn't true. Like his claim about ISIS, he was always talking rubbish. She wanted to get back to our family in Mahachkala in southern Russia, but she did not make it. He did not allow her to go.

"Poor kids. She left three kids. Two girls and a boy."

Shakhshaev is currently in custody awaiting trial.

UPDATED: A soldier from west Sweden says he was stabbed by two Isis fighters in the first attack by the extremist Islamist group on Swedish soil, but the region's chief police commissioner has told The Local there is no evidence to back up his claims.

The man, who is based with the Trängregementet unit in Skövde in west Sweden, told police that two men attacked him with a knife in the town of Skara in west Sweden last week after they spotted him wearing his army uniform in a convenience store and then followed him on a moped(motorbike).

He described his alleged attackers as having long black beards and said they had spoken in broken Swedish, with one saying "you will be the first victim of IS in Sweden" before stabbing him in the stomach.

The soldier also reported hearing one of the alleged Isis fighters shouting "Allah" and "you will die you infidel bastard". He also showed police a hole in his T-shirt which he said had been made by the attackers and said that small wounds on his stomach were a result of the violence.

Isis (also known as IS or the Islamic State) is believed to have a growing presence in west Sweden, following reports that a number of Swedes have been recruited from the region and travelled to the Middle East to fight alongside the extremists.


But police told The Local on Wednesday that they had found no evidence to back up the victim's claims.

"Nobody can explain his story," said Thord Haraldsson, chief commissioner for serious crimes in the region.

"We spoke to a lot of people [in the area] and nobody can verify what he said happened

According to Sweden's Expressen tabloid, which first broke the story, one woman even said she had been sunbathing close to where the alleged attack took place, and did not spot anything suspicious taking place.

Medical experts who examined the man's clothes and stomach suggested that his wounds could have been self inflicted

Police decided to share the details of their preliminary investigation after the soldier started posting information about the alleged attack on social media, which they became concerned was whipping up an unsettling atmosphere, Expressen reported.

The newspaper added that officials from Sweden's Security Service Säpo, and the NOA (Sweden's national police force) were also involved in the case as well as regional police.

Sweden's military has launched a separate internal inquiry.

"We can't say much but the investigation is still ongoing to try and make the picture and find out what really happened," Caroline Karlsson, a press officer for the Swedish military, told The Local on Wednesday.

"We cannot give out any personal information about the man. We are offering him crisis support, so he does not have to be alone right now."

Meanwhile Haraldsson said that Swedes should not be unduly concerned about the possibility of attacks by Islamist extremists in Sweden.

"No, no, no...definitely not," he told The Local, adding that the case was "very strange, but not the strangest I have dealt with in my time.

A man who found 730,000 kronor ($85,812) on a path in Berga in southern Sweden has been told he can keep the cash, after nobody came forward to claim they had lost the money.
The lucky new owner of the banknotes discovered the cash inside a wrapped package which he spotted at the side of a road in an industrial area where he had gone for a stroll earlier this year.

He immediately took the cash to police in Helsingborg, the nearest city.

Under Swedish law, any lost property left unclaimed after three months can be returned to the person who handed it in and on Friday police said that the huge wad of notes had been given to the beady-eyed walker.

"We have given a sum of 730,000 kronor in bank notes to a middle-aged man. The bank notes are still valid and the entire amount is going to the person who found them. We are not taking a single kronor," police spokesperson Richard Glantz told Swedish newspaper Sydsvenskan.'

He described the case as "extremely unusual", adding that he had never before dealt with the chance discovery of such a large sum of money.

But the news comes just weeks after a separate case in which a woman who found 85,000 kronor ($9,742) in cash in a garbage room in Stockholm and handed it into police was allowed to keep the money – two and a half years after her discovery.

“She’s very pleased but of course she is quite upset that it took so long,” her lawyer Patric Lindblom told The Local.

“Normally if you bring lost property to the police you get it back after three months or the actual owner gets in touch with police,” he said.

Welsh expats Richard and Claire Rees have been living in the Swedish wilderness without water or electricity for three years, teaching survival skills to tourists. The couple tell The Local about their alternative lifestyle.
Living in the wilderness with no running water or electricity isn’t everyone’s idea of a perfect lifestyle.

But when Richard Rees moved to Sweden in 2011 from South Wales – along with his eight huskies – he was fulfilling a lifelong dream.

Going back to basics posed little problem for him. Before the move, he’d been running a bushcraft survival training business in Wales, where he also took people dog-sledding.

“The problem is that there’s hardly ever any snow in Wales,” he tells The Local. "So the huskies had to pull people around on a wheeled cart.”

Richard, aged 42, was already familiar with Sweden, having often visited his brother, who lived in Enköping - about an hour north of Stockholm.

But it was in the far north - in Jokkmokk, where he’d ended up conducting a few survival training courses - that he really fell in love with the country.

“It was the wild wilderness, the fauna and the cleanliness of the forests and all they had to offer that were the real draw for me,” he says. “I thought, this country is where I should have been born.”

Meanwhile, he’d asked his friend Claire, an activity organizer with a love of the outdoors, to look after the business in Wales.

But after deciding to move to Sweden, he realized that she might be more than a friend. They went out on a few dates and fell in love.

When Richard proposed soon afterwards, he gave her an axe and a knife – symbols of what he hoped would be their new life together.

“He thought they’d come in useful in the forest,” says Claire, 42. “I always said to him that I’m not one of those people who likes jewellery or ornaments.”

Together, the couple bought a dog-sledding business, which came with a further 19 huskies, and moved to a cabin in the resort of Huså - near the skiing area of Åre in the west of the country.

“For dog-sledding, it was the perfect environment because you don’t want people skiing when you’re out on tour,” Richard explains.

As it turned out, however, setting up a business in a foreign country proved to be harder than they’d anticipated.

“It was tough,” says Claire. “It’s a completely different culture and there are different ways of approaching people.”

“If you speak to somebody and ask a question that they don’t know the answer to, then they say they can’t help you. It’s not like in the UK, where people often say: ‘I know someone who can help you’. The philosophy is that it’s up to you to find out for yourself.”

After two years of highs and lows, their business, Wildspirit Bushcraft, is now doing well. Earlier this summer, the couple appeared on the British programme Escape to the Wild, broadcast on Channel 4, which profiles the lives of Britons who’ve escaped the rat race to start a simpler life.


“It was quite tough because the crew had to get their equipment up here every day by snow scooter. But it was nice because we were able to give work to local people,” says Richard.

As well as offering dog-sledding, he teaches foraging and bushcraft courses which can last anything from a few days to a few weeks, while Claire coordinates and organizes all the activities.

Skills taught in the courses include how to make a fire without matches or lighters, create clothing from reindeer skins and construct a rope from stinging nettles.

The couple insist that the skills they learn in the wild remain relevant even in today’s technology-driven world.

“People today are suppressed by technology," says Claire. "Technology is supposed to make you go forwards, but we see people who come here and can’t even solve a simple problem."

“When they come here and learn all these primitive skills, they go away with a new thirst.”

Of course, living in a cabin in the middle of nowhere, with no running water or electricity and lows of -27 degrees is not for everyone.

“For me, the worst thing is the cold,” says Claire. “We have a wood burner, so when the snow starts to melt Richard cuts down some trees.”

No one should expect gourmet meals.

“It’s survival food, so lots of tinned stuff,” explains Claire. “We never follow recipes - we just use whatever we happen to have in the cupboard.”

Their ‘fridge’ is a box under a trap-door in the floor of their cabin, while their water supply comes from a river about five minutes’ walk away.

“At the beginning of the winter, we have to hack a hole in the ice and then keep it open so we can get water for us and the dogs,” she says.

For now, the couple are focusing their energies on building up the business.

“If we moved, we’d probably go somewhere like Alaska. But at the moment, we have no plans to move. We love the wilderness in Sweden

Modesty and Lowering the Gaze

Part of the provision of maintaining the dignity and honour of men and women in Islam is in the regulation of the way they are regarded by each other. It is forbidden for the Muslim man to look at any woman with lustful intentions, except for his wife. The same is true for a Muslim woman with regard to other men.

Rather, the emphasis is on lowering the gaze away from members of the opposite sex at times when they are present, like in the streets or the market place. Allah (swt) says,

“Say to the believing men that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty, that will make for greater purity for them, and Allah is well acquainted with all that they do. And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty.” [TMQ 24:30-31]

Jarir ibn ‘Abdullah reported, “I asked Allah’s Messenger about the sudden glance (that is cast) on the face (of a non-mahram). He commanded me that I should turn away my eyes.” [Muslim]

This reflects the principle that the way that Muslim men and women view each other is completely different to the way of the West, where women are seen as sex objects, and respect of both men and women in this context is almost non-existent. Indeed, if it does exist at all, the criteria upon which it is based mainly concerns the superficial physical attributes. Allah (swt) says:

“And the believers, the men and women, are protecting friends of one another, they bid to honour and forbid dishonour, they perform the prayer, and they pay the alms, and they obey Allah and His Messenger. Upon them Allah will have mercy.” [TMQ 9:71]

Raziyya al-Din (1205 – October 13, 1240), throne name Jalâlat ud-Dîn Raziyâ (Perso-Arabic:جلاله الد دین رضیه), Hindi: जलालत उद-दीन रज़िया), usually referred to in history as Razia Sultan, was born in Budaun and was the Sultan of Delhi in India from 1236 to May 1240. Like some other Muslim princesses of the time, she was trained to lead armies and administer kingdoms if necessary. Razia Sultana was the only woman ruler of both the Sultanate and the Mughal period, although other women ruled from behind the scenes.Razia refused to be addressed as Sultana because it meant "wife or consort of a Sultan". She would answer only to the title "Sultan." In many people's[who?] opinions Razia had all the qualities of a great monarch.
Razia (also called Radiyya or Raziyya) succeeded her father Shams-ud-din Iltutmish to the Sultanate of Delhi in 1236. Iltutmish became the first sultan to appoint a woman as his successor when he designated his daughter Razia as his heir apparent. Razia was the first and last female ruler of Delhi Sultanate. (According to one source, Iltumish's eldest son had initially been groomed as his successor, but had died prematurely.) But the Muslim nobility had no intention of acceding to Iltutmish's appointment of a woman as heir, and after the sultan died on Wednesday 30 April 1236, Razia's brother, Rukn ud din Firuz, was elevated to the throne instead.

Ruknuddin's reign was short. With Iltutmish's widow Shah Turkaan for all practical purposes running the government, Ruknuddin abandoned himself to the pursuit of personal pleasure and debauchery, to the outrage of the citizenry. On November 9, 1236, both Ruknuddin and his mother Shah Turkaan were assassinated after only six months in power.

With reluctance, the nobility agreed to allow Razia to reign as Sultan of Delhi. She dressed like a man and sat in open durbar. She was an efficient ruler and possessed all the qualities of a Monarch[citation needed]. As a child and adolescent, Razia had little contact with the women of the harem, so she had not learnt the customary behavior of women in the Muslim society that she was born into. Even before she became Sultan, she was reportedly preoccupied with the affairs of state during her father's reign. As Sultan, Razia preferred a man's tunic and headdress; and contrary to custom, she would later show her face when she rode an elephant into battle at the head of her army.

A shrewd politician, Razia managed to keep the nobles in check, while enlisting the support of the army and the populace. Her greatest accomplishment on the political front was to manipulate rebel factions into opposing each other. At that point, Razia seemed destined to become one of the most powerful rulers of the Delhi Sultanate.

But Razia miscounted the consequences that a relationship with one of her advisers, Jamal-ud-Din Yaqut, an Abyssinian Siddi (Habshi) slave, would have for her reign. According to some accounts, Razia and Yaqut were lovers, other sources simply identify them as close confidants. In any case, before long she had aroused the jealousy of the Turkic nobility by the favoritism she displayed toward Yaqut, who was not a Turk, when she appointed him to be Superintendent of the Stables. Eventually, a childhood friend named Malik Altunia, the governor of Bhatinda, joined a rebellion by other provincial governors who refused to accept Razia's authority


A battle between Razia and Altunia ensued, with the result that Yaqut was killed and Razia taken prisoner. She was incarcerated in April, 1240 at Qila Mubarak at Bathinda. While in prison, Razia Sultan was allowed to go to Hajirattan mosque to offer prayers on Fridays in a special palki. She was released in August 1240. To escape death, Razia agreed to marry Altunia. Meanwhile, Razia's brother, Muizuddin Bahram Shah, had usurped the throne. After Altunia and Razia undertook to take back the sultanate from Bahram through battle, both Razia and her husband were defeated on the 24th of Rabi' al-awwal A.H. 638 (October 1240). They fled Delhi and reached Kaithal the next day, where their remaining forces abandoned them. They both fell into the hands of Jats and were robbed and killed on the 25th of Rabi' al-awwal A.H. 638, this date corresponds to October 13, 1240. Bahram, for his part, reigned from 1240 to 1242, but would be dethroned for incompetence.

Children as young as seven would be allowed to change their legal gender under a bill proposed by Norway’s government on Thursday, bringing it one of the lowest ages for transgender rights anywhere in the world.

“This is an important area where Norway has lagged far behind many other countries for many years,” Health Minister Bent Høie said as he announced the plan during the Oslo Pride festival. “Now we can be proud that we are implementing this law.”

According to the Norwegian Health Ministry, most European countries only allow citizens to change the gender assigned to them at birth after they turn 18.

However, Richard Köhler, of the Transgender Europe lobby group, told Reuters that the “gold standard” was to have no formal limit, as in Malta.

“Generally it is very good to allow very young transpersons to have their gender identity respected,” he said.

Until April this year, Norway insisted that those seeking to change their legal gender undergo surgery, a practice which transgender activists argued was a violation of human rights.

According to Høie, children between seven and 16 would need to consult with their parents before changing their legal gender, after which they would be able to decide for themselves, without the need for a psychiatric or medical evaluation.

They would then be able to reverse the decision to change gender at will.

“The proposal is historic in that it will no longer be the health service but the individual who decides if he or she has changed sex,” Hoie said in a statement on the plan.

An illegal immigrant attempted a novel way of trying to make it through into Spain unnoticed by hiding inside the bonnet of a car.

Spanish police discovered the 23-year-old squashed up against the car's engine when they opened the battered car's bonnet.

The plucky man had attempted to cross a chaotic land border between Morocco and Spain's north African enclave of Ceuta earlier today.

His head was pressed up against the hot engine and his legs were nestled around the windscreen washer.

The driver, a Moroccan 30-year-old, tried to flee after being stopped but was caught before managing to get back across the border.

The man he tried to smuggle across is understood to be from Guinea.

Last month a Moroccan teenager was stopped by police on the same border with an eight-year-old boy inside a suitcase.

Shocking images of Adou Ouattara curled into a ball inside the case went round the world.

Adou’s 43-year-old dad Ali was arrested an hour and a half later crossing the busy Tarajal border.

The youngster was taken into temporary care before being allowed to return to his mum Lucie who lives in Fuerteventura
in the Canary Islands.

His dad was released from custody after DNA tests proved Adou was his son but still faces being tried for human rights abuses against a foreign citizen.

He has claimed he was deceived by traffickers and had no idea the youngster would be smuggled across the border in a suitcase.

Adou and his wife, who live legally in Spain, had only been allowed to bring one of their four children into the country under strict rules on family regroupment.

The rest of their family had remained in their native Ivory Coast.

Tories plan to kick 30,000 nurses out of Britain because they weren't born here

David Cameron’s new immigration laws mean workers recruited from outside the EU since 2011 who earn less than £35,000 a year after six years will have to go home.

Up to 30,000 overseas nurses face the axe under barmy Tory immigration laws that will spark an NHS staffing crisis.

Non-EU staff on less than £35,000 after six years here are to be kicked out. The Royal College of Nursing said: “This will cause NHS chaos.”

Already buckling under the ­pressure of savage Tory cuts, the NHS faces further turmoil with the axing of 30,000 foreign nurses.

But critics warn it will leave hospitals with a critical shortage of nurses at a time when more and more will be needed to cope with an aging population and the devastating effects of social care cuts.

And it could also mean up to £180million spent recruiting foreigners only to kick them out six years later will be wasted.The Royal College of Nursing warned the move would put patient lives in danger and called on the Government to exempt nurses from the draconian new law.

Chief executive Dr Peter Carter said: “The immigration rules for health care workers will cause chaos for the NHS and other care services.

“At a time when demand is increasing, the UK is perversely making it harder to employ staff from overseas. Due to cuts to nurse training places, trusts are being forced into relying on overseas and temporary staff, just to provide safe levels. A cap on agency spending will make one of these options more difficult, and these ­immigration rules will limit the other. The UK will be sending away nurses who have contributed to the NHS for six years.

“Losing their skills and knowledge and then having to start the cycle again and recruit to replace them is completely illogical. The NHS has spent millions hiring nurses from overseas to provide safe staffing levels. These rules will mean money has been thrown down the drain. Trusts are being asked to provide safe staffing with both hands tied behind their backs.

“Without a change to these ­immigration rules the NHS will continue to pay millions to temporarily rent nurses from overseas.
“The only way for the UK to regain control over its own health service ­workforce is by training more nurses.”

Under previous immigration rules, there was no income threshold or time limit. The RCN ­estimates 90% of nurses hired by the NHS from outside Europe will not have hit £35,000 within six years. The cut-off date for the new rules was set at 2011, meaning the first batch of nurses earning less will be sent home in 2017.

It costs £6,000 to recruit a nurse from outside Europe. The RCN, which began its annual conference in Bournemouth yesterday, said it is not certain how many are currently working in Britain. But it warned that if recruitment continues to rise, the number of those hit by the ­immigration law could reach 29,755. And it will have cost the NHS £180million.

A Home Office spokesman said: “There are exemptions to the £35,000 threshold for occupations where the UK has a shortage. But the independent ­Migration Advisory Committee ­recommended against adding nurses to the list after taking evidence from groups including the Royal College of Nursing. Employers have had since 2011 to prepare for this.”
But Dr Carter sa id: “The RCN submitted detailed and ­unambiguous evidence. This was not heeded, despite the evidence of a serious shortage of nurses. We repeat our call to add nursing to the list.”

Staff nurse Sandeep Duggani says it was always his dream to work for the NHS.

That dream came true in 2011 – but under the new immigration rules, the dad of one faces being booted out in 2017.

Sandeep, 29, did a nursing degree in Belgaum, India, and gets £25,000 a year working in an intensive care unit.

But he said it would be impossible to increase his pay to £35,000 before the cut-off date.

Sandeep said: “It was always my dream when I came to this country – to work in the NHS.

“I look after very unwell patients. It’s really devastating for the patients’ families.

“I love my job because I look after the families, as well as the patients

“My father is really very proud that I work in the NHS, because in India, the NHS is very famous.”

He warned that, despite the new rules, NHS trusts are still recruiting nurses from India. He added: “I don’t think they realise they will have to leave their jobs after six years.”

Sandeep, who works in Kent, said: “It’s very sad. I have done all these training courses and now, after six years, I have to go back. But it’s not just me. There are thousands of nurses going to be affected by this.

“That will be a huge burden on the NHS.”

His wife Pratika, also a qualified nurse from India, is just starting her NHS career and would be hit by the new rules in 2021.

In the hospital where he works, he knows of at least a dozen nurses who also face being kicked out.

How much do foreign nurses get paid?

Most foreign nurses start on Band 5, which pays £21,692-£28,180
On Band 6, they earn between £26,041 and £34,876, so still miss the threshold.

Even on Band 7, they would have to be on the mid to high scale, as pay starts at £31,072.

Who's on the government shortage occupation list?

Nurses may not be on the list of shortage occupations, but ballet dancers, head chefs and nuclear waste managers are.

Despite there being clear evidence of a desperate lack of the vital ward staff, the ideology-driven Tories have declared there is no such thing and refuse to exempt them from the £35,000 salary threshold that would allow them to stay.

The new immigration rules on recruiting staff from outside the EU will affect nurses from countries such as Australia, America, China, India, the Philippines, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa.

Those wishing to stay after six years and who do not earn £35,000 a year will have to start applying for indefinite leave after five years. Nurses who arrived before 2011 are not affected by the new law. The exemption list also includes geoscientists, hospital radiology consultants, radiographers, paramedics, science teachers, children's social workers and visual effects animators.

The Home Office said: "We changed the settlement rules in 2011 to break the link between coming to work in the UK and staying here permanently."

I reported earlier this year there were 52,000 applicants for 21,205 student nurse places in 2014 alone.

The crisis the NHS faces could have been avoided had Westminster invested in training instead of cutting it. The result is that with a lack of homegrown nurses, chiefs have had to look abroad.

Foreign nurses make an enormous contribution but now those we have relied on for years face having to leave, which is unfair. The Government can still avoid chaos by adding nurses to the list of occupations exempt from its new immigration rules.

In the long term, it needs to radically rethink how it approaches staffing.
